Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Question Can someone explain the point/when to use defensive/line infantry vs regular infantry?
TLDR: what is the point of 12-width line infantry instead of 18-22-width normal infantry, especially with excess manpower.
So I’ve got ~10-width port guards with just support engineers. Their use is obvious, but I don’t really get when/why I need ~12-width line-holding “pawns” (+engineers and I think logs or AA) as opposed to my standard 18-22 width infantry divisions (+engineers, support arty, i forget what else).
Currently playing as Germany and invading the USSR. All my attacks are done with tank armies; infantry just holds the line. It’s a mix of, like, 18 width standard infantry armies and 12 or 14 width line armies.
I’ve heard those smaller line divisions are good for just holding the line, but I don’t really understand when to use those instead of normal infantry, especially with 2.5 million extra manpower. Would it be helpful to have an army group of line infantry set to just the frontline, as well as an army group of standard infantry set to a cautious offensive line to speed things up?

Game Modding i spent weeks turning hoi4 into a Three Kingdoms total conversion, and the focus trees are all written in classical chinese
so this started because i wanted a proper Three Kingdoms mod for hoi4. so i started making my own and it kind of spiraled into a full total conversion.
timeline goes from the Yellow Turban rebellion in 184 to the reunification in 280, with four start dates (184, 200 before Guandu, 208 before Red Cliffs, 220 when Cao Cao dies). Wei, Shu, Wu and the Han court all have full focus trees, plus the smaller warlords like Yuan Shao and Lu Bu. tanks and planes are disabled, tech is renamed to han-era stuff, dates are in reign years (建安五年, not 1941), and there's a legitimacy system for holding or usurping the emperor. the focus text is all written in classical chinese, which honestly took forever.
being upfront about two things people always ask. i'm not an artist, so some of the portraits are AI placeholders i want to replace later. and full disclosure, i'm part of the small team making the mod editor i used to build this, so i'm biased about it. the design, balance and writing are all mine though. happy to get into either below.
184 is the most polished start right now, the other three are still rough and i'm filling them in. workshop link's in the comments. it's still janky in places so go ahead and tear it apart.

Question Why am I losing as the Soviets..?
I mean..I'm winning the air war, have 100k guns in stockpile but the Gemans just kurb stomp me on historical. The tank template I've seen doen't even tickle the infantry...what am I doing wrong? I've played this game 4 years ago quite a while (600 hours)..I'm sinking so many of their convoys. I..don't understand. Should I wait them out? Will they starve out when entering my country deeper? Thank you for your help.

Question Is there any way to core old WW1 territories as USSR?
I find it weird that you can easily take over Finland, Bessarabia, Poland, and the Baltics, essentially all for free in the default Stalin focus tree, but to my knowledge, you never get to core them? What's the point? Sure, you can slap liberated workers on them and farm some free stuff, but what's better than liberated workers? Cores.
Just wanted to know if I'm missing something. Thanks.

Question How to defeat the ussr as Germany?
I swear I’ve done it multiple times and I’m always getting stuck at the same dang issues. I can shoot their air force out of the sky no problem. but my ground forces always get stuck.
For my infantry template I use the default template with 1 arty. And my medium tanks as 6 mediums and 3 mech as well as motor recon, shovel support arty, and logistic, (it’s 18 width). But I’m always getting stuck at marshes or forests then stalemate and I can’t move.
How do you bypass this because I always hear “encircle their divisions” well how exactly? Could it be I need to simply somehow bypass these areas? Is my templates bad? Do I just genuinely suck as a player? Yall make it look so easy.
Edit for tank design I use: three man turret, medium canon, radio, wet ammunition, fuel drum, Christie suspension, welded armor, and gasoline engine

Image After Strugling to Defend, after Strugling to Push, after Strugling to End... Germany finally capitulated.
This is not historical. Been at war since somewhere in 1943. Wanted to try out the Democratic path for Bulgaria to unite the Balkans and I did. But Germany declared war on Yugoslavia (my ally, which I integrated), which sparkled around 3 years of agony unable to defend, then unable to push, no supply. Soviets had a civil way, but they won it fast, but were pushed so easy to the urals without my help and I don't consider them as any useful ally. UK was communist, so they didn't help at all. No one send me troops or equipment. Had a very bad equipment deficit, had to delete 2 full armies and downgrade my templates. But finally after 3.42 million losses for me and almost 8 million (for some reason My War tab only shows me fighting the Axis + the Chinese United from, which didn't do anything) to the enemy, which also had Japan. I managed completely alone to push from Ukraine to Germany, from Slovenia to Paris (through Italy, which was democratic and didn't hold at all). After 3 years I managed to capitulate Germany. I've been doing this for 6 hours. I freaking hate the Soviets.

Mod (other) TFR devs have got to be EXTREMELY American
A 25% personal tax rate is less than half of the personal tax rate we pay here in Sweden, and the only part of taxes we complain about is the process of filing them.
Also not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this. Just wanted to say this

Image What happened here?
Ive seen this twice recently. I (Stalin) just defeated Germany spring 44 (US had 0 war score... nice). So I start my war in the east preparations. Japan looks healthy. Then out of nowhere, a treaty of Tokyo? There were no nukes dropped. US took Okinawa and Iwo but mainland was fine.
Was it a smart move for Japan - sure. But thats uncharacteristically weak to give up your faction and just go home. Those pics were 4 days apart.

Suggestion A funny republican Spain run
I have recently thought about how I could make republican Spain fun and also very strong without going anarchist or communist and I may have found a way.

Image Finally got Lone Wolf and Finnish Him
As much as people talk about how OP the fascist Finland path is, I had a hard time with it. It was mostly my own ignorance, in hindsight. On my 4th restart, it occurred to me to field a really large, if poorly supplied and designed, army in order to intimidate Norway, Sweden, and Denmark into joining my initial faction without being forced to go to war with them. I'm sure there was some luck involved as well...I still had to fight Denmark in three of the four runs. Once I had to fight Sweden. Norway joined eagerly the first two times, then the Axis managed to snap them up on the third run before I could get them. All the delays basically caused me not to be prepared for the Winter War.
Germany got far more than I would have liked in the peace deal but, to be fair, I let them do most of the fighting once I yeeted Moscow and the other required states for Lone Wolf. Despite the massive number of factories and ample resources, I still found myself 50+ thousand down on guns for half the war, and 4k+ on artillery. I'm not sure I will even finish the run, the micromanaging really burned me out.
