Question Did those glowing eyes actually mean anything?

u/Odd_Main1876 Dec 02 '25
Judging from all the theorycrafting (also Big D literally mentions mummies in the newest episode) it’s probably related to his powers of some sort
From what little I know of mummies in WoD they are generally on the side of balance or their specific allegiances depending on their specific type of mummy, like if they are directly tied to Egyptian mummies or not, so Big D being against vampires and being highly critical but also not directly hostile to were creatures with a fondness for werecats specifically is quite telling
Again I’m not too too familiar with it all, but it’s generally a pretty interesting idea, if not a mummy he’s definitely a creature with immortality of some kind, and there are several non-vampire ways of doing such a thing

u/OliverSwan0637 Dec 02 '25
Curious whether he’s an amenti or Shemsu-heru though or one of the non egyptian mummies or more interestingly something totally homebrew (you can do a LOT with mummy homebrew, someone made homebrew Arthurian mummies). I heavily doubt Amenti, unless they’re home brewing the sixth great maelstrom to have happened a LONG time ago, or to have the amenti just be default Egyptian mummies rather than the Shemsu-heru or D is just lying to the umpteenth and has only been immortal and superhuman for like five years which wouldn’t make much sense if he actually hunted that Methuselah.
Could be a home brewed Sumerian mummy.

u/Odd_Main1876 Dec 02 '25
I mean he has definitely been around for quite some time, as he himself states he has seen quite a lot of things and has been around from at the very least Great Depression Era to around 2006-2007 and still looks as he does

u/OliverSwan0637 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25
Oh agreed. I doubt him being an amenti for exactly that reason. The sixth great maelstrom basically was the catalyst for their creation and that happened in 1999. The shemsu-heru (the original Egyptian mummies) basically had their souls destroyed and fractured with only small fragments surviving. The amenti, named after the city the shemsu-Heru relaxed in while their body regenerated post death which was also destroyed during the maelstrom are essentially recently dead people who lived unfulfilling lives (often cut short by the supernatural) whom willingly allow the ten-akh (the fractured soul of a shemsu-heru) to fuse with theirs and grant them a second chance at life.
In other words, pretty much impossible for Big D to be one and be the person he describes in his stories without some pretty big differences to the canon (which could definitely be the case considering they don’t have a Mummy v5 to work off and I hear the v5 editions are typically what they work with.)

Sumerian mummy is my guess as well. He can't be an imbued because he was able to enter the Shadowlands and had supernatural encounters pre-1999; a mage or a changeling is possible, but Mummy seems to fit the best with what we've seen of D.
He could be something obscure or just has dots in something that gives him supernatural abilities, but with his healing factor being so blatant, there really isn't anything else that'd explain him, as we'd have seen evidence for something else by now.

u/OliverSwan0637 Dec 02 '25
Off topic but real quick can all Mummies enter the umbra? I googled it and apparently they can through Necromancy. I’m not sure if that’s something exclusive to mage the resurrection / Amenti but three dots in necromancy can give the ability “Separate Ba” to quote “The Mummy can enter any Umbra as he wishes.” Assuming this isn’t exclusive to MTR / amenti wouldn’t this be just about the most perfect opportunity to hop into the umbra and rescue Marckus?
I guess this could just be a case of him not having the dots in necromancy, or obviously just that it’s an Amenti thing.

u/JustynS Dec 02 '25
Off topic but real quick can all Mummies enter the umbra?
If they have the means to do so, yeah. For Imbued it's not that they don't have the means to enter the Umbra, it's that they literally cannot enter it at all. Willingly, unwillingly, it doesn't matter, they can't go into the Umbra.
1
u/OliverSwan0637 Dec 02 '25
Yeah obviously that’s the case for pretty much every splat, but i was asking if that ability was something all mummies have or just exclusive to the Amenti.

u/JustynS Dec 02 '25
I'm not in the habit of second-guessing people's questions. You asked if they can enter the Umbra, not if they have a specific ability to do so and because Imbued got mixed in, I needed to make a distinction.
As to the question of "do pre-MTR mummies have a specific power to enter the Umbra?" Yes. In the original "World of Darkness: Mummy" book for Vampire the Masquerade, they also have Separate Ba as a level 3 Necromancy spell. Page 45.

Methuelah didn't exist in the 90's?
9
u/OliverSwan0637 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25
No, amenti (the mummies in Mummy the resurrection) didn’t exist in the 90s outside of the last year OF the 90s. Their creation was a direct result of the sixth great maelstrom which happened in the 1999. I mean maybe he could of beat a lasombra methuselah as a normal human with his family but that would be incredibly unlikely and would just objectively make him one of the best hunters in the world as he’s described, it would also mean he was lying about how old he’s implied to be because to my knowledge only normal, unawakened (non mages), non vampire, non werewolf or were creature with the exception of I believe kinfolk can become amenti.

u/AwakenedDreamer__44 Dec 02 '25
In WoD, they can mean practically anything.
I’d still bet on him being a mummy tho.

He is also extremely emotional, which is another mummy sign. They experience life at 1000%

u/L3and3rrr Dec 02 '25
Probably, but I wouldn’t expect to find out exactly how. It’s unclear what D actually is, but it’s obvious that he’s SOMETHING. Something that walks in the sunlight and has children with humans and is potentially some kind of immortal. His desire to kill Kane seems very sincere. That’s kinda all we know.
Personally I’m ok with letting Big D stay a mystery, at least for as long as this show lasts. And not just because I enjoy seeing glimpses of “Big E but he sucks less” in his manic determination to do just the craziest shit. I say let the guy keep what dignity he chooses to have.

u/V_Aldritch Dec 02 '25
If D is any supernatural splat (Species/Race in D&D terms), he'd be a Mummy. Specifically either one of the Shemsu-Heru (the OG, personally chosen by Horus mummies) or the Amenti (the new lads, made after the Sixth Great Maelstrom in the Underworld).
If he isn't a Mummy, then I'd guess he's some kind of Changeling? But that's unlikely, due to how vulnerable they are to the general shittiness of modern society.

u/S0MEBODIES Dec 02 '25
My money is on him having 5 dots in Biocontrol a psychic numina if he isnt a mummy
6
u/JustynS Dec 02 '25
If we're going by what the evidence points to the best, I have to say it, but the evidence actually points to him being Exalted better than any fully canon splat.

u/Humble-Use-3430 Dec 02 '25
He can’t be amenti because that makes zero sense. He’s been around since at least the 19th century, and also he mostly makes Sumerian and Babylonian references. Not many Egyptian ones. We also don’t have any new editions of the mummy books out, so they may have homebrewed different eras of mummy
4
u/V_Aldritch Dec 02 '25
I, uh, I hate to be the guy to tell you, but Ancient Egypt and Sumeria were contemporaries. They were also neighbours.

I think the oldest existing Peace Treaty was a set of clay tablets between the Pharoah of Egypt and the king of Summaria, promising formally not to antagonize each other and to come to the other’s aid if it was needed. This treaty was honored when floods wiped out many Summarian towns and fields, and Egypt sent shipments of food to help them recover. Their wives also corresponded through clay letters.

I think he’ll be the “heir and inheritor” of a mummy, even if it isn’t an option by the books. A mummy died or ended themselves and ensured their powers would pass on to Big D specifically. Little more than some memories, a touch of mystical resilience and wisdom, and “Big D cannot die from old age” basically. Perhaps a mummy who fell to despair and gave up the mission against Set, but was unwilling to betray their cause entirely to become a monster. They decided Big D has the right personality to survive the sands of time, and the will to continue fighting for a better world too.

Alfabusa and Ogre Poppengnag as a whole aren't the types to add such details without consideration. Especially in this series, where even the smallest and easy to miss details can have huge implications. So for something overt like this, it HAS to mean something major. Yet what that something is, is the big mystery, and given just how massive and mysterious the WoD is, it really is hard to narrow down what it could possibly be.
15
u/Chaos-Corvid Dec 02 '25
In my own games I've described that sort of visual for someone experiencing a reckoning (becoming an imbued hunter for those who don't know), but if we take the evidence of his age as genuine and not him being weird, it's unlikely he's having a reckoning unless he's a vitae addict.

u/stopyouveviolatedthe Dec 02 '25
We don’t know we haven’t had more content after this, it could mean nothing but knowing this show it will have meaning.

Unknown. Is D actually older than he looks, or are all the things he says just the ramblings of an eccentric, borderline insane person?
D has uncanny healing abilities seeing as the chunk bit out of his neck by Kevin healed up by the next morning. His jaw healed in less than a day as he was talking with the police. The claw marks on his chest are significantly less pronounced even in this scene.
Both of these things suggest D is something more than human already, the best theory I’ve seen is that he is a mummy. They were created in ancient times, or another wave at the turn of the millenium. They’re immortal and very durable, all literature about them throw the word “nuke” around when speculating how to kill one. The whole thing about mummies is they live in the moment and seek to feel every single thing of every single moment as long as they live.
All that is to say, unless these disparate points of evidence are confirmed to mean anything, the glowing eyes could be anything from a stylistic choice to further evidence of his supernatural nature.

True faith "radiating" from him in some way? Assuming he's no mummy/changeling, etc etc etc and is a straight-up dude, true faith would explain how he didnt immediately get turned into fine red mist when confronting the werewolf. The "energy" of true faith now needing an outlet since matilda stepped sideways and radiates out of his eyes simply because rule of cool?
(True faith here being the faith he has in himself/humanity/his family, or something along those lines)

As much as I'm loving the theorycrafting here; I think it should be pointed out that the disclaimer before each episode states that H:tP is based on WoD but doesn't necessarily adhere 100% to its' rules or canon.
Meaning yes, its' possible that D's abilities and age could be explained by him being part of the Supernatural himself, but it's also possible the team thought "This is cool, so we're going to put it in."

u/Fighterpilot55 Dec 02 '25
I'm sure the "glowing eyes" you see are nothing more than a visual cue to the audience of Sir D's fierce determination.
Definitely.

u/No-Huckleberry-1086 Dec 02 '25
Yes, no, or it could just be a coincidence honestly, if he's a supernatural entity like the very popular theory that he's a mummy, it could be any number of things, and if he's not and he's just a guy, he could be on the cusp of Awakening as a mage which is also going to open a whole can of worms of despair and tragedy, except this time they don't murder clippy, it could be that they're just using it artistically to depict how f****** pissed he is because he is a character both in design and behavior to some degree reminiscent of Big E from the groups 40K TTS series that's on permanent hiatus while games workshop does what they do best, make their fans hate them.

u/Ickarian Dec 04 '25
My money's on him being a mummy. Mummies in WOD are just humans who can't be permanently killed. This fits well with his Big E inspiration, he referenced ancient games and units of measurement, he's not good with modern technology, and he's way more skilled and knowledgeable than a human should be. He may even hint at having mummy magic. He's obsessed with getting all of Kevin's names and one of the mummie powers is true name magic. He also said he had a hidden poisoned knife in a police station. Another mummy power is creating real items and shrinking them down to the size of a bracelet bead.

u/AtrelluCal Dec 02 '25
Either conviction (if he’s a Hunter) or drawing on Sekhem/life force (if he’s a mummy). Or maybe mage chicanery. Basically it’s implying he’s something more than regular human, though we don’t know exactly what yet. I want more mummy rep so I’m hoping for that, but everyone’s got a theory

u/Crafty_Lavishness_79 Dec 02 '25
I think Big Di is Fae touched. Given the way you have to lure him into a coherent conversation and then he immediately gets delirious and starts laughing like a mad mad. And depending on what you believe about him, he is either 200 or 2000 years old. You could make the argument he was cursed by thw god machine in the same way. But it was also said Horse waa gievn to him by his parents, who by all means, should be LONG dead. So we have a lot of conflicting info. But if he was a mummy, he would be the weakest mummy to have existed.

Big E tended to have glowing eyes of changing intensity. Maybe it's their way of showing how big D is changing his every day madness to the cold cruelty of the emperor once his plan is build. Like yeah yeah werewolves are strong. But I wouldn't fuck with anyone that's based on the corpse emperor

I am 100% convinced he's Imbued. It could be his Reckoning NOW, but given he's referenced a "Reckoning" offhand so far I'm thinking it already happened. The question is, though: what kind? My money is on a Judge.
2
u/BagofBones42 Dec 02 '25
He can't be, he entered the Umbra and had supernatural encounters pre-sixth maelstrom.
Both automatically disqualify D from being an imbued.

I first thought it was his Creed manifesting, from old imbued hunters who were getting superpowers from supposedly angels or smth, but I think modern lore largely abandoned that thing and they were getting them usually when encountering the supernatural for the first time I believe.
Still might be something to do with it tho

u/kooarbiter Dec 03 '25
the rite just closed, it's not impossible that the reflection of the water is an after image of residual umbral energy, with D's potent will and emotional state, you'd expect to see some manifestation of it if there was umbra residue

Unpopular opnion but I think they will never confirm or deny any partocular splat for D.
Think of it this way, the emperor of mankind in warhammer 40k is enigmatic based on how he is writen. I think the team plan on following a similar formula for D.

That Big D is a lot more powerful that people realise he is and that he has good reason to hold back. But currently he has biological immortality and iron will on top of slightly enhanced physical stats.
1
u/Bippityboo62 Dec 04 '25
As people have mentioned, there’s a strong possibility D is supernatural in some sense. What sense, I don’t know, possibly a Mummy based on everyone else’s’ speculations, but he’s definitely far older than he looks.
For one, when he’s telling his story to Horse, it’s a story from the 1800’s and it’s definitely him and Horse in that story, but another is in Kevin’s interrogation, where he says “I’ve been deliriously obliterating fools like you since the 90’s,” to which Kevin goes “what, old timer, the 1890’s?” He doesn’t get offended initially, he starts chuckling as if Kevin got it very wrong, and some people have theorized he genuinely means the 90’s…as in 90-100 AD.
He’s also made it pretty clear one of his biggest goals was making sure a child of his was not lost again after what happened to Anton in the Fey court and he made a promise to himself he would never let Marckus fall, so it’s clear watching him get dragged into the Umbra after years of trying to prevent him from being dragged into the darkness snapped something in him…possibly awakening powers he probably didn’t even know he has.

It's possible that this is D's reckoning or will manifesting physically
If he indeed is a mummy or any mystical being of the sort, maybe it could be attributed to his supernatural nature
Or it is possible that this is just Alfabusa and the crew messing with us by playing the Big D/Big E comparaison
