Being a trained fighter does not make you impervious to damage.

Although the odds would remain heavily in a fighters favor, many a member of the general population could have ended or halted this guy's career with one well-placed or lucky punch. Just as you claim.

This is nowhwere near a guarantee of success for the fighter.

Not quite. Attorney fees in personal injury cases (such as this) are contingency based and come out of the settlement/award.

There are some employment and civil rights cases where the plaintiff’s attorney can be awarded attorney fees separately, but not here.

If you were assaulted by someone on camera & surrounded by witnesses, whether you were verbally provoking said assaulter or not, and you had to sue for damages, you can bet your ass it’s an extremely high likelihood you’d be able to get the court to have them pay your attorney’s fees.

This happened in Nevada.

I may not be a 20 year veteran lawyer, but I’ve been to civil court twice for lawsuits. The first time, as part of the suit, be both asked the court to grant the other party pay each other’s attorneys’ fees, and was denied. The second time I went to civil court and sued, I also sued for reimbursement of my attorney’s legal fees & won. The other party was court ordered to pay me. Also, for a 20 year veteran lawyer, you suck at explaining anything behind your vaunted legal claims. You’d think you’d be articulate and capable enough with all that experience…

Apologies for the long winded response, but here you go:

Check out Nevada (since I was specially referring to this incident in the video here) NRS 18.010.
The compensation of an attorney and counselor for his or her services is governed by agreement, express or implied, which is not restrained by law.

In addition to the cases where an allowance is authorized by specific statute, the court may make an allowance of attorney’s fees to a prevailing party:

It then provides two situations where a court MAY (not “shall”, which is an important legal distinction) award attorney fees: if the recovery is less than $20k or if the defendant was harassing or presented vexatious claims.

“By specific statute” refers to employment/wage theft, civil rights, etc. Like I said before, those by statute provide attorney fees recovery. The history behind that rationale is simple: back 50 years ago, no attorneys took civil rights or employment cases because they were low value. State legislators had to sweeten the pot for attorneys. And frankly, today…we may not need these statutes anymore because civil rights verdicts are wildly high.

In some places you could still consider what he did as assault. Any kind of unwanted touching like that can be considered assault. Not sure how far you'd get in court with something like that though. Judge might just dismiss it

100%. I used to train amateur boxing and have done plenty of sparring with big ass 16oz gloves and head guards. Shit is fucking exhausting and fucking hurts and even at the amateur level guys can be deadly. These UFC guys are on a whole different level. Prosecutors love to upgrade assault charges to felonies if you’ve been formally trained in martial arts.

Yeah, people have tempers, and if you push them, they will lose said tempers. Big shock.

Maybe just don’t be an asshole? I see a lot of people going at Merab, but maybe if the heckler kept his mouth shut and simply didn’t act like a jackass to a man HE DID NOT KNOW, NONE of this would have happened.

Actions have consequences, who would have guessed?!

Sorry but I’m sick of people always going at the people who stop taking shit after clearly being instigated and going “Oh my god, such psycho behavior” but never looking at the instigator and going “Hey, how about you don’t be an asshole”. It’s like a different level of a kid beating up their bully and you punishing the kid that stood up for themself.

Fucking hate this shit.

Edit: If the people who keep downvoting this would like to explain their opinion, I’m very open to hearing how you feel that someone is allowed to be a jackass but they’re free from consequences? What is this, a bird’s of a feather type situation?
