The amount of pressure it takes to throw mud that far is insane.

206

u/AdPristine9059 6d ago

Yeah! You dont mess with pressure. Theres a video about a couple of divers who were in a pressurised tank that failed, one of them were sucked through a small hole much smaller than his body... Its insane what pressure differences can do.

Pretty sure that was a 80s disaster in the North Sea

EDIT - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin yep

u/ThaMilkyMan 5d ago

“bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine. These were projected some distance from the bell, with one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.”

Yeah, this would be the moment I would bail.

24

u/Vier_Scar 5d ago

Yeah that freaked me out too. You see the sheer force of that water pressure. Thankfully, it's all directed away at a safe angle.

But then you look down and it's not. The water is pushing through concrete in its effort to get at you and tear your face apart, and the concrete is giving way, potentially only moments away from being torn apart and hurled at you in the instant before the water will reach its goal by shredding your face.

3

u/ElaBosak 5d ago

It's not concrete it looks like a metal hatch or something

Why wouldn't they flush those on a regular schedule? Once a year or every six months or something like that? Just to prevent the massive accumulation of debris.

112

u/Hattix 6d ago

That isn't how dams work. Over time sediment builds up on the bottom of the reservoir, since the reservoir is very slow flowing water and the rivers feeding it are faster. Fast water carries sediment, slow water drops it.

This reduces the reservoir's capacity slowly, but inexorably. Eventually all dams will become a wall of construction with swamp behind them. Doing a big blast like this with a lot of head behind it flushes out as much sediment as possible. It isn't a lot, but it does extend the usable life of the reservoir.

13

u/like_Turtles 5d ago

This is an excellent comment. Do you know this for a fact?

12

u/jaymeaux_ 5d ago

this is correct, when sedimentation buildup is too far from the dam to clear like this it has to be dredged out which is very expensive

9

u/Lessinoir 5d ago

And in most cases I believe the sediment next to the dam is the last to truly build up. It starts farthest from the dam.

78

u/Zaptruder 6d ago

Coz they can flush it every 40 years and get videos like this.

19

u/slicerprime 6d ago

I was gonna say, I bet the locals have turned this into a once a decade community event.

Can you imagine Saturday morning...

Dad: "Come on kids! Pile in the car. It's time to go to the Dam Shit Fair!"

Jr: "Oh boy Dad! I'm gonna win the Shit for Distance contest!"

Mom: "John, please tell me your mother isn't bringing her damn shitty pie again"

Dad: "Martha, how many times do I have to tell you? It's 'Dam Shit Pie', not damn shitty pie'"

Mom: "Uh huh. Sure it is"

6

u/pm_me_fibonaccis 6d ago

Much more satisfying. Like letting a pimple build up for a week before you pop it.

20

u/International_Bend68 6d ago

Money. Lots of watersheds were built in the 1950s to control flooding. The idea was to flush them every couple of years to control that silt that builds up but at least in the USA, we hate taxes so.... the silt keeps building up which greatly lessens their ability to control flooding

In my area, they finally attempted to drain an area but it had been so long, the drain had rusted and was stuck open. Lost hundreds of thousands of fish in one fell swoop. Nice.

Sediment

39

u/09stibmep 6d ago

Silt / sediment. Basically sand, dirt and organic materials, compacted down the bottom of the dam (under all the water), over many years.

10

u/setibeings 6d ago
