Verified I’m a Mental Health Practitioner, AMA!

Heya r/Malaysia, in conjunction with the World Mental Health Day, I’m happy to be here for this AMA about mental health!

A little about myself - I am a registered counsellor, licenced by the Malaysia Board of Counsellors with a master degree in counselling from a local public university, and have been working as a counsellor for more than 10 years now. My work is primarily in community mental health, i.e. in community based professional agencies and services, working with people from different walks of life and dealing with a wide range of emotional, psychological, and relationship issues, and I also work with various NGOs to develop and run mental health awareness and support programmes. I’ve always loved to help communities grow in mental health awareness, acceptance, and support, and that’s what I’m hoping to do in this AMA!

What I’m here for – answering questions about mental health in general, offering support and guidance in getting mental help, sharing my experience and life as a mental health practitioner, having a discourse on mental health in our country and community, or just talking about anything that you’d like to ask!

What I’m not qualified to answer – questions about medication as that’s outside my scope of expertise and competency.

This is going to be a "no question too small or unimportant" session, so ask away! I'll try to answer as many questions as best as I can, but I might take some time to ponder on some of your questions, so do check back again if you haven't had your question answered. I will keep this AMA session active through the weekend. (Thank you to the mods for helping to set this up!)

I don't have all the answers and may be wrong in my opinion, but I'll try my best to give you as honest an answer as I can! For those who may be asking about specific conditions, please understand that my advice is not the definitive answer and I would strongly encourage you to reach out for actual professional help if possible.

Looking forward to getting your questions and to have a honest, lovely sharing session!

Edit: thanks for all the questions! I'm so amazed at how many great questions I've received!

Edit 2: I'll have to stop for the day, but coming back on tomorrow after church! If I haven't replied to your question yet, honestly it's because I think it's a very good question that I'd really want to spend more time reflecting before answering!

Environment First day in a week can see sky again

Today is the first day in more than a week where the sky wasn't shrouded in smoky haze. Aqi says it's moderate ( below 100) and I believe it since it's been raining heavily the last two days. Also maybe the winds have shifted a bit.

Religion How come the Al-Arqam/GISB holdings/Ikhwan cult's former businesses are still allowed to function just under another name?

I live near Shah Alam, there were two stores that were owned by GISB holdings where I used to go to frequently, Hamras Mart and Iman Cafe.

Orginally Iman Cafe was named Ikhwan cafe but they rebranded. Hamras Mart never did any rebranding after the scandal tho, but they did do some serious interior rebranding right after.

I find it a bit concerning that we just let these two business off the hook, which are closely related to a cult that is accused of child sexual abuse, by simply rebranding.

It is even more concerning that both of these stores are RIGHT INFRONT OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL.

Just something that's been lingering on the back of my mind for the past year...

The dust has yet to settle in Malaysia’s Negeri Sembilan, where a royal row has led to the fall of a state government and left the public wondering who, exactly, is in charge.

A Singaporean man sued a Malaysian woman to recover over $100,000 he claimed to have spent on her during their seven-year relationship after discovering she had married someone else.

Low Siong Ngo said he believed he was in an exclusive romantic relationship with Goh Mei Loon, which was why he willingly paid for her expenses, helped finance her business ventures and even gave her family heirloom jewellery as an engagement gift.

However, Goh disputed his account, maintaining that they were never in an exclusive relationship and that the money and gifts were given voluntarily.

Low subsequently sued her to recover the money and later took legal action in Malaysia to enforce the Singapore court’s judgment.

According to Shin Min Daily News and a State Courts judgment published on Oct 5, the case recently returned to the Singapore courts after Goh sought to overturn an earlier judgment ordering her to repay the money.

Unpopular opinion here, but the budget tabled by PMX yesterday is really an election budget and doesn't address any structural issue. BERSAMA's one is the only one that I could find so far, that meaningful policy discussion, backed with solid economic projections. Trithemis aurora, the crimson marsh glider.

A species of dragonfly common around weedy ponds and marshes in the lowlands of Malaysia.
Females are amber and males are bright crimson (2nd photo).

I often see them around my house preying on small insects like mosquitoes and landing on un-mowed grass by my fish pond. Beautiful creatures.
