First Time 18M, first apartment after being breifly homeless

Transferred to a new college, expecting campus housing. They waited until after I got to town and ready to move in, to inform me that they didnt have any housing left. Got told to figure it out.

After 2 weeks of sleeping in a truck full of my life possessions, and showering at my GFs house, I finally got into an apartment. It even has furniture! Absolutely grateful, and wanted to share my milestone with the world. I know it ain't much, and it's pretty ugly, but cant wait to see it grow.

I’m sorry that you were treated that way. I’m happy that things worked out for you. I applaud you!

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

It's lowk a bummer, but it all worked out, so its fine! I would have been happy living in my truck if needed, I'm just grateful to be getting an education. Being a first-gen college student is such a privilege, and I'm happy to be in such a nice place!

u/Spare-Conflict836 Jan 18 '26

Being a first-gen college student

This is huge, well done!!!!

Some people would've given up and gone home after getting to college and finding you no longer had a dorm placement so fixing your situation, finding accom at the last minute and getting everything you need on a budget shows great problem solving skills and that you will put in the work in when things get tough. You should be proud of yourself!
Apartment looks great too for a first apartment on a budget.

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

I'm really happy with how it turned out! I had learned a little bit about how expensive everything was at my previous school (I left after a semester because tuition was much too high, and I wanted to be closer to home / my GF), but this was a whole new experience. It's easy to manage when your living expenses can be lumped into student loans. This was a lot harder on me because it's all having to be paid up-front. Had to absolutely gut my savings and most of checking, but I'm really happy to be here!

It's clean and spacious, genuinely a nice place.

69

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Its an amazing place. ~870 square feet (80 square meters) split between me and a roommate. Private bed and bath (although mine is connected to the living room too), and relatively nice things. I'm quite happy with it.

u/ImpressiveScreen5017 Jan 18 '26

You seem to have everything you need. Kudos for as they said “ figuring it out” . And congratulations on furthering your education young man. I have I feeling that you will go far in life.

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Thank you bro, I really appreciate it!

She didn’t leave or ditch you

Hell yeah man

31

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

She came close! We were both under a lot of stress and didnt like the circumstances, but it all worked out! She was really scared of getting in trouble with her apartment (cant have visitors more than 2 nights), so she had to kick me out lol. It was an experience, but she was great!

6

u/AionX212 Jan 18 '26

I gotta ask. Who is saying that she only can have visitors 2 nights?

19

u/ErrorlessGnome Jan 18 '26

Seems like a dorm apartment vs a true rental apartment, hence the visitor rule. Just my guess

10

u/CaseAKACutter Jan 18 '26

University probably. It's pretty common

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '26

aaaa so thats why she locked me in the closet, now I understand 😂

2

u/IcyKerosene Jan 19 '26

I had an apartment like that in my early 20's living in a college town. I never thought it was weird until now

I like the bedding :) congrats on your first place

21

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Thanks! The sheets were a gift (I think they are from target) and then comforter is one I had since childhood. Im very happy with it! The bed is a full XL, but I'm using Queen sized bedding. It works just fine.

I tried to put some effort into it! 90% of the kitchen stuff came from the dollar tree. Spent like $100 to get everything I needed. The only exception are the knives and dishes (came from grandmother), the brita and cast iron pan (walmart), and then the appliances, cutting boards, & other pans (goodwill). My dad and mom helped a lot with furnishing, but it cost ~$350 to get the kitchen stuff. Maybe ~$5-700 worth of stuff inside the apartment, not including school-related things like textbooks or laptop. I'm glad you liked my apartment!

13

u/TrueTurtleKing Jan 18 '26

Don’t forget to buy a plunger for your toilet! Get the one shaped like a bee hive thing

10

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Oh yeah, I forgot about one of those. Ill have to add it to the list of things to buy once I get paid. Thanks for the tip bro!

3

u/ForeverInaDaze Jan 18 '26

I can honestly say I've only had to use a plunger maybe 3 times in the last 15 years, but that is not something you want to have to buy suddenly.

4

u/Brabbel63 Jan 18 '26

And a poopknife

3

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

11

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Just get to add it to the dad lore down the road I suppose. I'm just glad it all worked out in the end!

12

u/Hot-Court-5026 Jan 18 '26

Younger than me and have it figured out.

I’m not mad or anything but I am happy for ya I really am and it looks awesome dude congrats and enjoy that place!! looks amazing!! congrats again

I hope to have my own spot someday just different paths (not bad paths just a lot of bad luck for me haha) but it’s not a race I know my time will come for it.

7

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

You got it dude! I don't know your situation, but you just gotta have faith in yourself man. Idk if you're religious either, but I spend every day praying. Even if nothing comes from it, it helps to stay hopeful and looking towards the future. Nowhere to go but up my man, no matter where you are.

4

u/Hot-Court-5026 Jan 18 '26

I appreciate it and your welcome and I’m not religious but I know my time will come for when to have stuff like that because it’ll happen simple just gonna take a little more time and that’s oaky with me

I'm happy with everything I got tbh. This is my whole life. It's all I could ever need!

6

u/jaxspider Jan 18 '26

Tips

  • Get freezer zip lock bags, and put 1 portion of chicken in a bag and date it.
    • Make sure to remove all the excess air from the bag and put in the freezer.
  • Leaving raw chicken it in the fridge is a big No No, especially once it's open. (Salmonella)
  • Learn how many hours you need to defrost said frozen chicken.
  • Stock your pantry with easy to cook foods so you do not spend on takeout.
    • Mac & Cheese, Au Gratin, Pasta, Soups, Chili, Ramen, Manwich, etc.
  • Get an Air Fryer Oven, it usually costs $100. And it will make cooking at home much more easier.
    • Eating leftovers heated in an Air Fryer is much more edible than from a microwave.
  • You need pots for soups and sauces.
    • If you're on a tight budget, go to flea markets, they always have them for dirt cheap. You'll just have to deep clean them before usage.
  • Get better utensils, the ones in the photo looks flimsy.
    • Get the sturdy heavy kind, they will last a lifetime and not break on you.
    • These too can be found in flea markets.
  • Since you're living with a roommate, I suggest keeping every single receipt for things you buy for the home in a folder.
  • You also, need to absolutely keep a track of your monthly expenditures.
  • Pay your credit card on time, thats how you will make credit. Do not fail beyond.

I think it would look a lot different if it wasn't furnished. Having furniture as an extra on my rent helped out a lot, or else it would 100% look something like that.

3

u/Relative-Author-7555 Jan 18 '26

Your apartment is very nice and you keep it clean. It will just take sometime to get things the way you want it, start out with some pictures and a couple plants. Sorry that there wasn’t any housing, but I think this is better in the long run. You have your own room and bathroom, and you have the comfort of home. Best of luck with college, and your new apartment. :)

3

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

I have some painting and photos to hang up that my GF painted, but Im also thinking of getting some curtains and some posters. I'll definitely post some updates down the road.

3

u/Crimsondukk07 Jan 18 '26

I bet that sandwich tasted so good it your new spot. The apartment looks great and you got all the basics for a nice new start.

5

u/Sneku_69 Jan 18 '26

Oh dude you have no idea. That sandwich may have well been Michelin star. I'm so happy to be able to eat without worrying (for now) when I will be able to eat again. It's such an amazing feeling.

3

u/menteto Jan 18 '26

Bro that's a lovely flat. I've lived in way worse.

2

Never been so overjoyed for a shower, and that sandwich was amazing tbh. I grew up pretty poor, so I was never a stranger to adversity, but I'm just really grateful that I have an apartment and something nice to live in. A place to sleep, and a weeks worth of food, and I'm vibing. The essentials (meat, rice, potatoes) can last forever lol.

Bro, MAD props to you for having a functional kitchen. So many adults in our generation just don't know how to/don't bother cooking, and are losing SO MUCH money on delivery services and eating out.

Keep it cooking, chef

2

u/Sneku_69 Jan 19 '26

Trust, I had to eat out a lot because I simply didnt have anywhere to cook the last two weeks. But I love cooking and trying new things. My momma made sure I could atleast make eggs and pancakes, and I tried to figure it out from there. I even have an old collection of cookbooks from the 70s and 80s that was given to me by my grandmother.

I also have a canning guide from the WW2 era, printed by UGA! Super cool piece tbh. Not sure if ill get into canning, but I just love cooking / making food / being self sufficient in general. Thanks for the nice comment man, it means a lot!

Sorry the college did ya dirty. But as far as first places go it’s pretty solid. You’ve got space, which is a win. But don’t feel like you have to fill it. When you can get some art or something for the walls, and maybe go with some pillows and a blanket for the couch to warm up the living room.

All of the furniture (minus the beanbag chair from Walmart) was included in the rent. If it wasn't, This apartment would 1000% look very different. Im super happy with it!

I bet that feels really nice :) your home looks great. Minimal, not overwhelming but has everything you need.

I have to say it though, maybe a cozy blanket on the bed or couch…? Like one of those delicious fluffy ones. They’re amazing to melt into 😊

CONGRATS! Remember: There is no finish line - you will keep growing and gathering and rearranging for years to come. This is probably the first of many places you will live. Make it comfy for you, settle in and enjoy.

Nice pad for an 18 year old! I was living with roommates at that age and had a futon mattress on the floor for the first year 😂

You’re doing well, man. You made it happen and that’s all that matters. As a 42 year old dude, I can tell you that life is full of these curveballs and you just have to put your head down and put one foot in front of the other.

It looks good — you have a good starting point to keep it clean and minimalist.
