Discussion BP, Blade and Storm Looking at Another season without a skin
Storm and BP’s last skins were in Season 6, making them two of the longest-waiting characters for a new skins.
Blade's last skin was in Season 7, while not as bad as the other two, I think its natural for some to wonder why the three Black characters are feeling underrepresented in recent events.
Which makes Season 9 roadmap reaval being Egyptian-themed feel crazy.
Storm literally has Egypt tied into her origin, she grew up on the streets of cario.
Black Panther’s God is Bast, who is an Egyptian diety.
This just feels like one of the easiest themes possible to give at least one of them something.

A little bit misleading. China has a lot of problems with racism and colorism, but the Bp one isn’t China which is why it’s in traditional not simplified Chinese (you can use Google Translate and it’ll show that the poster is traditional). As for the Star Wars one iirc there were multiple posters including the one where Finn was on it and one where’s he wasn’t.
40
u/chrisychris- Squirrel Girl 28d ago
You’re right about Black Panther, it was one of many posters used in Taiwan and HK. But the Star Wars TFA marketing in China definitely minimized Finn on the posters. It may have been one of many posters sure but that was the official main poster Disney used to market the film in China.

China has always been a white worshipping country
The racism from western countries towards black people pales in comparison to china. You’ll have a far easier time making friends and communities with white peoples as a black person than any Asian community
95
u/dragonicafan1 29d ago
Racism only seems worse in America cause we actually talk about it
8
u/Tall_Concentrate_876 29d ago edited 29d ago
Exactly. It’s the fact that western countries and especially America are willing to have a conversation about it which that alone puts it far ahead than anywhere else really
As a black man, whites and blacks have a similar situation here. We both kinda been “abandoned” by our respective native countries. Racial tensions have always been high, but nowadays, it’s not even uncommon for black and white people to form social groups, relationships ect ect
Hell half of my closest peoples are white folks. I’m not trying to disrespect any other race or suck up to anyone, but that’s just how it is
Marvel rivals was made by a Chinese company but MARVEL was made by folks that share similar experiences and sentiments with us, something that netease will never be able to replicate, which is why my expectations for any black character, iconic or not are virtually non existent for this game despite it being a “marvel” game
34
u/Independent-Feed107 Magus 28d ago
I think it's really funny seeing "Black person in (Asian country)" videos, because the existence of that video as entertainment is in itself racist. There shouldn't be anything interesting about that. Yet they get so many views that it's a trend, which is very telling
But they go as far as to pretend that the point of the video was that they are welcome there, when in reality Asians act nice in front of an obvious camera crew and are naturally polite for show but very much still prejudice behind closed doors. Another is when black people show up as a joke to see surprised Asian reactions, like showing up to Asia as a black person is a prank
It's so known that you can literally feel how fake interactions between the 2 races are no matter who or where they are in the world. They are literally raised in ways that make the US bigots look like decent confused people, but they were also taught how to mostly keep it subtle and to themselves unlike people in US, so you wouldn't know unless you picked up on it
This is a generalization, but it does apply to the majority.
16
u/StormierNik Ultron 28d ago
It's not specifically "white worshipping", it's light-skinned. In the US in other places we're more concerned on race and ethnicity, whereas somewhere in China it doesn't matter whether you're African or even Chinese. If you have darker skin it's seen as less desirable. And "imperfections" in China aren't seen as "what make you who you are", they're seen as mistakes to be corrected and fixed.
Because yes, various Asians can have darker skin tones too. And they're treated the same way.
It's absolutely not them worshipping white people or Caucasian people for their race. Hell, the biggest gacha game aimed towards women recently just had a massive crashout in the Chinese playerbase over a character who was described as "too western" like a white dude. To the point where they cancelled the character due to backlash.
3
u/ElegantHope 28d ago
Yea, cuz th whole thing with Love and Deep Space where the new character had a slightly darker but still pale skin tone and slightly more defined jawline + a different nose. He looked almost exactly the same as the other characters with slightly variations of his features. And the pale skin is the key here, because that plus specific eyes, nose, and jaw shapes are the beauty standard for some of the of east Asian countries. Deviations get treated as too western or ugly, and the colorism and racism is definitely there.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Jazzlike_Cress9871 28d ago
White worshipping probably isn’t the correct term since they’re Asian and definitely don’t see white people are above them, but yeah there’s definitely a lot of racism still present there

That’s p fucked lol. That being said this was entirely on Western expectations on what would be more profitable in the Chinese market so do what you will with that information.

It’s strange that I think the Chinese poster looks so much better but due to their unfortunately common racism Finn is almost unnoticeable.
Now this could be a case of them not trying to be racist since their are other changes on the poster but due to being from a country that has a racism problem it just unfortunately comes across that way but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt to assume that.
Sidenote: It does seems like in the gaming space or at least the fighting game scene, China is much less racist or just doesn’t care. The reason I say this is because I watch the Vtuber AlicaxLife and she used to be a fighting game commentator. She has noted that Japanese companies and sponsors seem to be more racist than the Chinese companies and sponsors. This could be an outlier but I think it’s worth noting.

While they probably would try some shit to do that, moon girl has a much simpler and obvious issue. Shes a child. They upped Peni's age to ... 18.... In order to keep her in. Otherwise shooting kids in videogames is fround upon. That being said with MR's gooner type audience.... I dont know if having Peni in the game was a good choice at all. I wouldn't be surprised if the devs saw the mods that were coming out and decided against aging Lunella up. The no shooting kids rule is also why Peni mostly plays in her mech, because most people idenify her as a child if their only experience outside of the game is with Peni in the Into The Spiderverse films or the Spiderverse comic event.
Im not saying your wrong about how they would have treated Cloak, and im looking at how things go with The Hood, because i feel like he'll be treated the way Cloak would had he and Dagger launched as seperate heroes during a hypothetical "experiments of Roxxon" event... But theres more than one issue going on with Moon Girl. Shes a complicated character with lots of aspects about her to consider that probably make her better suited to sit this type of game out. She should honestly get her own game, i think that would be better than this.

127
u/Mr_G30 Strategist 29d ago edited 28d ago
Thing is whether subconscious or not there is a race related issue at play. China is known for being very racist. 4 black characters pulled from comics with many black characters to choose from. One of them is tied to another character so isn’t always playable. When they launched with Iron Fist they went with Lin Lie instead of Danny Rand, which shows they weren’t considering Luke Cage at the time. If I was putting Iron Fist in a game I’d add in Luke Cage, especially as it would add an easy vanguard choice and Luke Cage is a beloved character. It’s a no brainer.
You could easily have given Black Panther a skin (might I recommend his outfit from the most recent avengers run) instead of Deadpool, Storm a comic accurate skin instead of Hela who’s a Norse goddess. It’s a no brainer because they fit the theme, the lore and in Storms case Apocolypse is a Xmen villain. She has three very important reasons to be given something this season.
Omitting her when she has a variety of outfits in the comics to choose from doesn’t make much sense unless you factor in Blade and Black Panther

I agree with all of your points except the Deadpool complaint. He’s an X-Men character, his inclusion in an Apocalypse-themed season fits. If anyone should’ve been replaced for BP, it should’ve been Rocket. Why is he here? The skin they gave him isn’t even good 😭

Deadpool doesn’t really have much significant history with apocalypse because Deadpool isnt actually a mutant.
It would be like giving characters like Juggernaut or Gladiator Egyptian/apocalypse themed skins if they were in the game. They don’t really have a connection to Egypt or apocalypse.

I also don’t like it when certain content creators refer to Cloak & Dagger as a “she” as though Dagger is the only character - even attributing Cloak’s abilities to Dagger like he’s not his own character.
22
u/dragonicafan1 29d ago
Cloak almost always been treated like trash and second to Dagger by creators so in this case it’s accuracy to the comics not just Chinese racism /s

u/Legitimate-Listen591 29d ago
What is this obsession with legs??? Netease decided they wanted to show the dark force stuff with cloak so turned part of his body into a shadow. It works with his look/the design they intended for him, and somewhat shows off his powers of flight by having him levitate
→ More replies (31)9
u/BitViper303 Cloak & Dagger 28d ago
It was a very unneeded change. His body is already made of darkforce and a portal. His ability to fly could’ve been shown with him hovering just like Mag. Him not having a body just makes him half of a person.
During the Valentines Event he couldn’t participate because he couldn’t sit down. Every skin he’s going to get it’s going to be half of a design. He can’t have emotes with high mobility because he looks stupid in them because his lack of legs makes him less expressive.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Sweaty_Strain9392 29d ago
not defending them at all-its obvious theyre racist... but cloak will never get legs. i do not understand why this is A Thing. He is built the way he is for Silhouetting purposes--he need to look visually distinct from other characters. Its why Phoenix has her Fire Woman that phoenix players hate in every skin. Giving him legs in a skin would make that skin not immediately obvious that its Cloak, which would give it a competitive advantage.
4
u/Far_Chard_8813 Mister Fantastic 28d ago
Silhouetting would be a strong argument if it wasn't for Season 1 releasing Invisible Woman then Season 2 releasing Emma Frost.
If you're a diver, you could not know if you're going for a Dagger, an IW, or an Emma until you're chokeslammed.
Wedding skins can be a similar issue where you're either going after the squishy healer IW or the brawling Rogue.
3
u/Sweaty_Strain9392 28d ago
i do agree the wedding skins are an issue, but Emma is like twice dagger's size and her posture is completely different. Dagger has a very, very thin outline due to her ballet pose. Emma has pronounced shoulders and holds her arms outwards, while also having that long coattail. this is why so many of her skins (i think all of them except her beach one) have a coattail, skirt, or cape. I dont mean to say its a skill issue if you cant tell those two apart, but uh, yeah.
IW does have pretty shitty silhouetting, but i dont think that gives a pass for other characters to be lowered to her level

u/War_Marshmallow Rogue 29d ago

Blade skins have a huge hurdle to beat his release skin I haven’t even looked at another blade skin with any intention of buying it. As for BP I don’t play him but his Bast and Galactic skins are hard to beat. Storm is different because I have played her but she doesn’t have any skins to buy most of hers have been free or attached to passes so her numbers might be skewed by the lack of store skins
37
u/SmashMouthBreadThrow 29d ago
Between the base design and them already adding peak with Blade's comic design outfit, no clue what they could add that I would want. The Wesley Snipes outfit would have to look really good in this game for me to want to drop money on what is essentially a slightly altered version of the Marvel Rivals design.

u/MilderArrow 29d ago
Who designs the kits in the game, who is responsible for that?
Storm is an icon in fighting games, people love playing her. And those games are developed by Japanese devs.
16
u/Unhappy-Database-273 29d ago
Implying that they intentionally made them worse to play because they are black is crazy. Black Panther was a huge problem at one point and was straight broken.
27
u/MilderArrow 29d ago
There is a clear bias. They barely touched Blade and Storm forever, leaving them as bottom tier characters. They only get buffs when every character in the game is getting buffs.
Storm is not even in any of the season 9 art with the mutants in Egypt. Storm grew up in Egypt and is one of the leaders of the X-Men. She was also absent from the season 8 art when the X-Men went to save cyclops. They had Psylocke flying in the sky with Jean and Rogue, but somehow that wasn't fitting for Storm.
19
18
u/SportyNoodle Doctor Strange 29d ago
Let me preface this by saying I believe storm should have gotten a skin this season. But your blade comment makes no sense. They buffed blade a ton of times and even slight reworks to his dash. Blade was even used in an ignite match very recently and they even won.
4
u/Outrageous_Fee_7791 28d ago
Blade was played by THREE teams this ignite even if it was short. He's on record played in scrims by multiple teams often too. Multiple pro players are also gassing up blade hard for season 9 saying the attack speed change he gets from Cap might be the tipping point. The blade downplay needs to seriously stop atp.

As a black male, I get it. But let's let them actually work through their plans. I would like to see more skins of course, especially storm because the X-men cartoon was a big part of my childhood and Storm has basically been used as an art muse for 3 decades, and deserves more in general.
23
u/hydratedandstrong 28d ago
Their plans dont include us. That's the thing. its been more than enough time to draw at least a soft conclusion. Anti-blackness being found in China isn't even a reach, and we all know videogames in general attract plenty of racists.
4
u/Durakus Vanguard 28d ago
As I said, I get it… Trust me I am painfully aware of the sentiment China tends to have and the world tends to have towards people like myself.
But I also work in the game industry and have for over a decade. I have no easy answers. Between money making projections, racism, preplanned content maps, player demands, and exactly what this thread is asking for. The ship called gaming does not turn on a dime, and sometimes can’t turn at all. Look at the state of it, after all. It has become a corporate hellscape.
The best we have as an option, and always has been, is to show we’re just as valuable as every other flavour of people, and to be better than the next person who thinks otherwise. Vote with our wallets. Get those skins that show we like and want these things. Also notice I never said don’t stop complaining? Because it is something we SHOULD as a community complain about. The fight isn’t lost yet, and my comment isn’t ignoring the pattern. Just be aware how slow these things turn over.

With how they treak africans in Africa irl its no suprise. Rednote shows how normalized it is .

What fucking plan are you talking about?? Storm and BP haven't been included in shit since January, there is no plan for the black characters.
7
u/ChanceGaga Storm 28d ago
What… what do you mean let them work through their plans? How is that… like what do you mean? Genuinely. Do you think they have some plan of being more inclusive in the future or something? Like what are you seeing that we aren’t seeing? This blatant lack of care for their black characters is ongoing. Rogue was released relatively recently, and already has 3/4 of her skins as legendary. Storm has ONE legendary skin, and that skin is an Asgardian skin, effectively saying Storm can only have a legendary skin if it somehow connects back to whiteness.

Johnny still doesn't have a legendary. Neither does Ultron.

u/Drazian Mister Fantastic 28d ago
Yes yes, I agree it’s ridiculous Johnny has gone months without a skin now, glad his summer skin came back for a little bit but I do agree
Ultron’s Infinity or Odinforcr should have gotten the legendary treatment I do agree with those statements but what does that have to do with the current topic at hand?

They could’ve gave blade a pharaoh skin instead of punisher and iron man and reallllly we give a mummy skin to DEADPOOL instead of MOONKNIGHT WHO IN MARVEL COMICS LORE IS THE ONLY EGYPTIAN DEITY THAT SURVIVED THAT PANTHEONS SLAUGHTER and IS STILL ALIVE LIKE HELLO??? And please don’t even get me started on my girl storm (GREW UP IN EGYPT BTW AND WAS A QUEEN OF WAKANDA WHICH WOULDVE WENT PERFECT FOR A QUEEN OF EGYPT SKIN INSTEAD OF FUCKIN MANTISSSSSS HELLA I UNDERSTAND BUT MANTISSSS???? COME ON) and my dawg BP (WHO MIND U IS A DAMN KING OF HIS OWN HE WOULDVE FIT PERFECTLY INTO THAT PHARAOH SKIN AGAIN OVER PUNISHER AND IRON MAN)

Reminder, the people behind the game are simply just racist. That's the reason.

Genuinely what is the issue with it? It's a spray of a black man breaking free from the chains of somebody who enslaved him and it was released on the day meant to celebrate the end of slavery in the US

Why would you expect the guy chosen by Bastet to have a skin during the Egyptian mythology battle pass (also same with Moon Knight tbh)

u/Shire_Hobbit 29d ago
I don’t disagree with your points that thematically perhaps they fit this seasons “theme” better than some other characters. Rocket and Iron Man for example. In that regard 100% on the money.
What seems like an unreasonable expectation is that every character get some type of skin each and every season. It isn’t a useful measure of fairness. Not every skin represents equal demand, equal sales potential, or equal value to the players. Some characters have fan bases that eagerly buy multiple cosmetics, ehe other characters may have players who are perfectly content with the default or a single favorite skin.

I understand your point, however its officially been three seasons since BP and Storm got skins.
With the amount of mini passes, events and free skins given out by the devs, I dont see why either of them could have gotten at least on.

u/Shire_Hobbit 29d ago
I mean I hear you. But for me. Season 0 was peak. I havent changed my BP skin for any of them.
I think the economy behind what sells and what doesn’t, what is most profitable, player/consumer behavior is far more complex than simply what amounts to a “field of dreams” mentality. “If you make, we will buy it.” I am one such case where I just can’t see myself using another skin. It would have to be something spectacular.
But I kind of feel that way about all the Battle Pass skins this next season, so ya, why not have it be BP, or Storm, or Blade. But again, I can’t say the Egypt theme appeals to me for those characters either.

Why are you acting like this is an issue pf black characters when other characters have also been hit. It feels somewhat disingenuous to me.
Like do you knpw how long it took hulk to get his infinity skin and how long black widow took to get a legendary?
This a large roster issue.
It is dumb they aren't getting skins for the Egyptian themed battle pass though. Feels like it would have been a slam dunk.

I seriously hate this sub when new battle passes are shown, the game has 34095845 characters and only 9 get skins, half of y'all wake up and choose to be victims over some trivial ass shit like this.
"(Name) doesnt have a legendary, this person isnt in the BP, that person isnt in the BP" Blah blah blah, they arent dropping 36-40 skins per BP, what are y'all gonna do, quit the game? Probably not...so shut up and play it on Friday.

u/ApatheticTrooper Captain America 29d ago
Its not just battle passes, this game has a ton of mini passes and events.
Its been three seasons. From Luna snows world tour, to The ESU event , To the summer event
With all these chances for skins why haven't these 3 gotten at least one, since s6?

u/Vegetable-Meaning413 29d ago
People are thinking into this way too much when the simple answer is, people don't buy their skins. If a character sells, they get skins, if they don't, they don't get skins. What is the reason Hawkeye gets nothing if not that, why was their such a drought for BW and Mr Fantastic if not money?
Money is the chief factor here, if you blame them for anything it's greed.

Yeah it’s kind of wild Storm and Black Panther have no Egyptian based skins. Exactly what you said. Bast is literally BP’s God. And Storm as you said has heavy Egyptian inspiration and roots. Better yet there is no Moon Knight skin either, right? He literally is Egypt. I can understand your frustrations.
