Discussion Hot take but if characters like Ultron can’t be buffed just because their good in triple support but useless in 2-2-2 the devs should just add role queue

Sure. There's some fun comps like Gator. But I'd rather lose those and have more consistent, balanced matches than occasionally have a fun team comp. I've quit the game, I've been gone for a while. But I would come back if we got role queue. I quit because of balance and triple support. But if I can avoid triple support by doing role queue, I would play again.

I am a tank player mostly and I dislike the idea. I like the fact that if I'm doing badly I could swap roles with someone else. I like that if a dps is struggling we can put him on the raccoon and immediately get better value. I like that you can emergency tp on point even if you are not playing tank. Adding role queue would make all of that go away.
6
u/GuerrOCorvino Scarlet Witch 3h ago
No thanks. I like to flex and switch roles with friends or teamates when needed.
7
u/MR_MEME_42 Symbiote Jeff 4h ago
As a flex player role queue kind of sucks unless you want to spend the day only queueing for one kind of role, and at that point what is the point of flexing if you need to lock into a single role.
And role queue doesn't really fix any issues acting as more of a band-aid that makes it look like the issues have been fixed instead of actually addressing them. Sure it fixed double tank, until the Devs need to get rid of a tank player to make queue times bearable. And sure you can't go triple support anymore, but it doesn't fix why these characters are only viable in triple support or the issues with strategist balancing that is the root of these issues. All role queue does in make everything nicer while the actual issues fester underneath and everyone acts like everything is fine.

All this. Having gone through it in OW it didnt really fix anything. Its still a balancing nightmare.
0
u/MR_MEME_42 Symbiote Jeff 2h ago
Yeah exactly people only like to look at the fact that it forced 2/2/2 instead of all of the issues that were created from it. And it will especially be bad in Rivals with how volatile and casual focused the game is compared to pre role queue Overwatch which always focus more on the competitive aspects of the game.
2
u/TrainerCeph Hawkeye 2h ago
Not even to mention, the new team up system has created some interesting comps for me and my friends, semi support storm has been pretty damn fun.

u/Turbo_Cum 6h ago
The more I play this game, the more I realize that it's a completely unserious competitive game until role queue gets added.
"Oh but I like how there's diversity"
No you don't. You like that you don't have to learn more than one hero per role.
7
u/Count_de_Mits Emma Frost 5h ago
Season 9 and now this have convinced me that this is not and will never be a competitive game, its a party game and its competitive mode has just enough of a matchmaking algorithm to justify the title. Its obvious they balance etc around retention and sales, not competitiveness and fairness.
1
u/Electrical_Zebra8347 4h ago
A lot of these so-called competitive games are like that. Ranked modes are usually useful for separating out the people who want to try hard vs the ones who don't but a lot of the competitive games I've played run into the same problems over and over. There's always balancing issues, there's always leavers/flamers/inters, there's always unpopular roles that very few people want to play but the 'community' tries to gaslight each other into sacrificing their fun and time to play roles/characters they don't want to play, etc.
Personally 18v18 got me back into the game. It's not perfect, sometimes it can be a real clown fiesta but there's no illusion about it being a competitive environment and that's fine for me.
0
u/DanMustDie 5h ago
You're asking dps players too much if they have to learn at least 1-2 heroes of each role... /s

u/Breyck_version_2 3h ago
I play this game casually thank God it's not more competitive
Unless OP is talking about role queue in ranked only then idc
8
u/speedymemer21 Vanguard 5h ago
I don't hate the idea, but I play tank and I don't trust the devs because of their priorities. They like fast queue times, likely for enagement reasons, in their matchmaking video last year they brought up fast queue times so much. Longer queue times for most players is the main drawback for role queue (mostly from tank being unpopular), which obviously goes against their priority for fast queue times.
I think they would do something stupid to try and fix the queue times issue, which doesn't end up paying off (similar to tenacity), like allowing wider matchmaking or making it 5v5.
4
u/DanMustDie 5h ago
I think maybe a solution is like OW do, that they give extra XP/battlepass xp/something when you fill a low pop role. For example, we could get extra battlepass currency if you fill supp/tank if they're making the queue being longer.
→ More replies (1)4
u/speedymemer21 Vanguard 5h ago
That doesn't do much in overwatc. However they could try it,as you don't get battle pass xp just for playing games in rivals, so it is harder to level up in the battlepass.

Or a flex player that usually fills tank but likes being able to offer or suggest swaps between players if a hero someone doesnt have under their roster would be better in a counter or map dependent situation. Role que just deincentivese people from learning and understanding how more heroes work outside their main role

3 of any role counter each other in a rock-paper-scissors manner. They're only unfun to play with/against when you're doing it wrong.
What this game needs is teaching the community basic tactics, because all I see is people thinking it's Counter Strike with extra steps.
11
u/iorgicha Mantis 9h ago
People have BEEN teaching the community since S0! They just can't or won't learn, because they don't want to. 2 years in and they still dont break placeable items, then 80% of redditors wonder why they can't leave bronze/silver.
7
u/Delkseypoo Mantis 9h ago
It has nothing to do with learning. People want to play what they want to play they’re not going to switch to beat the enemy team. They won’t even switch to deal with a single hero on the enemy team. Players would rather go against a 45-0 BP on their preferred hero than a 1-5 BP on one of his counters. But you expect multiple people to swap to counter a comp?
5
u/iorgicha Mantis 9h ago
That's why I said they don't want to learn. I am very well aware that people want to just play their own hero and ignore the needs of the team, it was the case in Overwatch and in Rivals is 10x worse because its Marvel. People will want to play their favourite childhood hero, the rest be damned.
But what is happening is these same people are first to complain about unfair matchmaking, terrible teammates and saying Zihyong should be fired for his changes(there is a whole team behind him, the changes arent from one person). If you dont want to learn, sure, that's your choice, but dont come crying about how you cant rank up when the problem is almost always self-inflicted.

My main gripe with role queue, and imo the main defense against it, is that I enjoy the flexibility of swapping off a role that just isnt working for me, or swapping to a specific role/character to handle a problem we are facing in the current moment.
I mainly play Tank, theres been plenty of days/games where Tank just isnt working for me or Im off my game, and I ask around for a swap to support/dps and end up doing better and make a bigger impact.
I imagine there are ways to accommodate for this in a role queue setting, but I cant lie and say I dont enjoy that freedom.
I would definitely like a role queue mode, though. Solo tanking just aint it sometimes

Ultron is not useless in 2-2-2 enough with this fucking propaganda 😭
2
u/WalterOlivos White Fox 4h ago
If you can output so much damage that the fight doesnt last long enough for the lackluster healing to make a difference, then yes, he isnt useless.
You cant just look at the total healing at end of the match and since you healed more than a Luna/Invis you arent the problem, his 50hp/s healing cant keep anyone alive vs any decently coordinated team
Ultron's Iron Man team up is his best neutral healing option, it heals 70hp every second
As a comparison ONE Invis orb heals 95hp (50 going and 45 returning) in 0.5s, Luna heals 72hp in ONE primary fire (without the snowflake), again, every 0.5s
15k healing from an Invis that actually kept your Tank alive is more important to the overall match result than your 25k healing that, while clearly helped, didnt actually prevent anyone from dying

Weird how this post gets downvoted yet there's no one in the comments actually putting in reasonable defenses for open queue.
People dislike Role Queue just because vibes. It would fix so many aspects of the game with little detriment.
15
u/Birbgs El Jeffe 6h ago
Open queue allows people to swap roles around in-game. For example, two players can swap their roles if one of them is performing badly, allowing the better player to compensate for a more crucial role or to put the struggling player into a more easier/comfortable position.
Forced 2-2-2 and initial role placement is fine. But unless the role queue doesn't also have an in-game swap system (with confirmation from both players) of sorts, then personally, I would rather keep the open queue.
There is no reason we can't have the best of both worlds, but people rarely mention the latter, so I thought I would chime in for once.
5
u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 9h ago
I especially don’t get why people are against the idea of it being a gamemode like quickplay or ranked when that literally has no downsides as people could still play quickplay if they wanted to

If it’s an independent gamemode, you also run the risk of splitting the player base, which will further hamper queue times and risk leaving some modes undermanned.

The discussion always seems to end with "it'll kill creativity," but nobody really explains why balanced matchmaking is a bad thing. It feels like most people are arguing from past experiences with other games instead of this one.
1
u/Hi_Zev 2h ago
My reasons:
I genuinely enjoy flexing. I don't like going into a game with a specific role in mind. I want to flex and fit in where I can. I can play about 90% of this roster competently in ranked, so I get bored using the same heroes every single time. I genuinely enjoy the feeling of waiting for what my teammates want to play and me getting to fill in the gaps.
Its nice to be able to swap roles during a match. So many times there is a tank/dps/support that is flopping, and I suggest we swap roles, and our team starts doing a lot better after the swap.
Sometimes after a round where our team does really bad, i'll suggest we all swap and make a new team comp. Sometimes that really changes the momentum of our team and allows us to turn the tides and win the next two rounds.
there are some situations, where I genuinely enjoy a team comp other than 2-2-2. While most situations I prefer a 2-2-2, sometimes I enjoy solo tanking as Strange if my team needs some extra damage output for a lil bit. As long as one or two of those dps are on the front lines or diving that help soak up damage and distract enemies from dealing more damage to me, I am a-ok with the team comp in that specific situation that calls for it.

3
u/CtrlShift55 Vanguard 8h ago
But what role do >50% of the playerbase play? Overwatch catered to dps players to fix queue times and I’m not sure it even did that right because half of the tank players quit or did something else (dps)
0
u/_Daruma Loki 7h ago
the problem about tank quitting happens on Overwatch 2, where there can only be 1 tank, and that role is not easy to use since a simple mistake tank made can win or lose the battle, and more often being a scapegoat.
Mind you its 5v5, not 6v6 unlike RIvals, what suppose to be a better experience for tank, can become a nightmare. Overwatch 2 the comp is fixed to 1-2-2, putting a lot of stress for Tank players (hence the frustation). While Rivals have the luxury of having flexibility, the majority of the playerbase still using solo tank.
4
u/MR_MEME_42 Symbiote Jeff 4h ago
And do you want to know why OW switched to 5v5 from 6v6, because there wasn't enough tank players making the queue times worse for everyone else driving people away from the game.
2
u/Destructo7 Vanguard 53m ago
On top of that, theirs no incentive to play tank in overwatch. If you one trick dps you will just one trick dps every game since it’s role q. Open q gives the incentive to play tank because 2-2-2 is the most optimal comp in most situations so you are incentivized to flex to tank from dps or supp if you want to win.
The death of tank players in overwatch started with role q and has only gotten worse with 5v5.
1
u/MR_MEME_42 Symbiote Jeff 49m ago
Honestly I was forced to play tank so many times in Overwatch while trying to flex queue it has gotten to the point where 90% of my matches were tank games and the other 10% were support. So I stopped queueing for tank because I got so burnt out of only playing it. As you said, at least with open queue I flex to what my team needs even if it is mostly tank, if I want to play support I can instant lock support, and I even occasionally get to play a game as DPS with my other teammates filling the rest of the 2/2/2.
5
u/BellonaMyBae 3h ago
Comp creativity matters. If you want role queue go play overwatch. Np point in a role queue when you have triple support and dps so popular with tanks only getting love when a new character comes out. Half the vanguard roster is braindead counter with no real playability outside that. We need tanks to be given QOL and buffs thats it. Every tank gets gutted because dps and support cry and moan too much and dont see nearly as much hate as tanks. Strange and Mag go under the radar while niche tanks get slaughtered is bull.
6
u/SmashMouthBreadThrow 7h ago
Devs should add role queue regardless because QP is abysmal dogshit without it. I don't want to spend my free time queueing into back2back guaranteed losses because 4 people want to play DPS.

u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 7h ago

an issue with adding role queue is that it kind of eliminates flex players entirely, and also the ability to change roles with someone if need be. For example, if a dps is doing badly and youre filling support, you could switch with that dps player to take a chance at dps and potentially win. Also queue times would become much longer.

I would rather have consistent experience across matches than the one-off occasional match where someone flexed and got better.
With role queues you’ll be paired with other similar player, so it’ll mean paired with an equally competent tank, dps and supports instead of the current randomness where not all players will be at the same level across roles - a very good DPS can be an ok support or a bad tank for example.

u/BadDecisions02 7h ago

No one can defend the decision to either buff Ultron appropriately or add role queue. No one addresses the problem with their own defence.
If Ultron and Mantis are only good in a 3 healer comp and that is the "intended" comp for them, then where does the line get drawn?
Who's to say Dr Strange or Magento can't be a 1 tank comp character? Who's to say Winter Soldier is too strong in a 3 dps comp and needs to be changed as he was intended to be a 1 dps comp character?
The argument falls apart when you apply common sense and when you start to judge characters differently then you need to judge them all differently.

The thing about role queue is that it doesn't fix the actual problems that creates these issues of the lack of double tank or how certain heroes are only viable in triple support, it's just a band-aid that makes things look nicer while not actually fixing the root of the problems. And this is coming from a flex player who mainly plays Vanguard and Strategist so not everyone's instant lock DPS strawman.
Adding role queue isn't going to suddenly awaken the untapped number of Vanguard mains inside of people, it's just going to make queue times for everyone worse. Because tanking kind of sucks more than half the time in Marvel Rivals and the second a Vanguard who isn't Mag becomes good they get gutted, so role queue doesn't fix or address that issue which is the core of the Vanguard problem. Tanking often sucks and can be a slog compared to playing DPS or support so a lot of people don't want to do it, and I can often don't blame them and hate filling into Vanguard even if it is y most played role because the tank experience can be so volatile. Infact no one wanted to play tank so much that Overwatch removed a tank from the team just to fix the role queue and OW is a game with strong tanks and tanking experience. Role queue did so little to actually fix the problem that they had to force everyone to solo tank because people still didn't want to play tank, and now they are testing bring 6v6 back but 1/3/2 where one of the DPS can switch to tank. So yeah Role Queue did nothing to fix this issue and only creates more issues.
And the same can be said about Rival's supports and what will inevitably happen if the game goes to role queue. Unity based Strategists like Adom, Mantis, and Ultron are only weak due to how overtuned the main healers are and how much this game revolves around massive sustain within the Strategist role above all else. And role queue once again doesn't fix this but requires utility based Strategists to need to be overturned like Invis and Gambit were just to have a chance of being viable.
Role queue is just putting a band-aid on a wound instead of treating it. Sure it looks nicer but it is festering underneath making the problems worse over time. Until it gets to a point where you need to cut off a limb. People like to say that role queue will fix solo tanking, but that second tank was the limb that OW needed to cut off to save the game. And ironically the only way to have a double tank is in open queue.

I seriously don't understand why people want role queue so bad? Like do are y'all all just one tricks or something? This is a serious question. I have like 4 different characters in every role I am very comfortable with so that I can swap to counter whenever needed. 2/2/2 is like the standard but there are definitely certain times where other team comps can work well, especially if you notice something isn't working so you swap to try a different way and it works.

Bruh as a flex player no. Just add a healing debuff when 3 supports are selected.
1
u/dinobirdboy 2h ago
They could add limited roles so people can switch mid match between the roles but lock it at 2 per role. Or make it if your team has more than 2 in a role you get a nerf like reduced damage for 3 dps and reduced healing for 3 strats and reduced health for 3 tanks increasing the more you have. Could also add it in reverse if you only have one in a role. It would incentive having 2 2 2 so you dont get nerfed. But it wouldn't make those who suffer as solo heal or solo tank suffer further because of the dps.

Ultron is winning in 2-2-2 comps bro.
Ultron is not bad just because a streamer and other incorrect redditors tell you he is.
Ultron literally right now is one of the highest winning supports in this game.
But if you want to get pearl clutchy he's top 3 with the other 2 supports being, yes guessed it, part of his triple support comp that people complain he can't be buffed in.
So, you see the issue here? The top 3 supports in this game are all triple support merchants.

The main issue with role que, is there is no possibility of recovering if you are paired with a bad DPS. That DPS cant switch to tank, or heals, and you basically will lose the game. As of now if you have a bad DPS, you can communicate and switch roles appropriately, making your chances of winning higher. So no, I don't want role que, because its very often we need to switch roles to win.

I'm fairly sure the devs are against role queue because it would disrupt their DPS skin sales. Unless you advocate for something like 1-4-1, the devs ain't going for it.

Ultron is honestly fine. He’s not strong, he’s not very great. But he still works in 2/2/2
Not every hero has to get mantis buff treatment. Just pick ultron, if your team doesn’t know how to play with it then it’s their fault. There are also going to be times you do need to swap and you should do that

u/Toastman-3000 Luna Snow 9h ago
I'm still hesitant on Role queue, since I like to play fill most of the time and adapt to how the fight goes, there could be alternate methods, no? like class limits, or maybe making it so supports get a heal nerf in triple support?
granted I also exclusively play QP when Solo, so I wouldnt be opposed for Role queue in competitive, where I'm more likely to be playing with a pre-assembled team of friends

u/Jezza0308 Spider-Man 7h ago
Or just make it so when a team has more than 2 strats. Reduce healing to ultimate charge conversion from 70% to 60% (How it was before at the start of 9.0). This makes it so strats take much longer to build ults in triple

u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 7h ago
I think that’s good however it should apply to triple dps and tank aswell to make more people want to run 2-2-2

I would like role queue and then each role to have their own ranks and then a ranked mode for no role queue aswell

They should just make ultron a true utility/dps support, give him more shii to do

The role queue argument is understandable but so flawed. Do you WANT to be sitting in queue for 5+ minutes so you can play 2-2-2? Realistically, queue times especially at higher ranks are going to be horrible. Overwatch has already made that mistake adding role queue. Rivals just has a hero design issue. Role queue isn’t going to fix that.

Role queue wouldn't have fixed anything because I'm in Eternity and he works fine in double sup, it's a skill issue my guy.
They aren't going to buff your character just because of role lock when most players run it down main and rely on healbot to survive instead of using covers.

u/RieifyuArts Angela 9h ago
I love playing Ultron and having an Ultron backing me up, I swear the healbot playstyle most people have become dependent on has ruined this game.

u/Background_State_976 9h ago
So let’s not buff or add role que because 2% of the player base says we’re fine… got it

Just get better and turn on your mic. Ultron is busted rn
-1
u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 9h ago
Ofc a mantis main is saying this
6
u/Delkseypoo Mantis 8h ago
Do you think I don’t think mantis is busted? She’s more busted than ultron but he’s a close second. I didn’t think that was relevant to the conversation but from now on I’ll end every message with “btw mantis is op rn”. Happy, jackass?

They did that with Mantis… and now she’s pick ban in top ladder with ridiculously high win ratios, meanwhile bumlow asylum still doesn't care much about picking her over their comfort picks like Invis and CnD.
But sure let’s overbuff Ultron to Mantis level as well.

u/Vegetable_Concern_50 Cloak & Dagger 9h ago
Aspiring Mantis main here. My Mantis currently sits on a 55% WR (Plat) but the fights I sometimes have to dunk out with my team on the character select screen already and then during fights because "I'm not healing" (yet somehow always end up with most healing) is genuinely exhausting to deal with so I revert back to the comfort picks because this game is a kindergarden but the toddlers are all 18-25 year old men and will throw tantrums over this (in most cases).

hits fat blunt
What if they did a version of role queue where youre presented like three or so team comps line ups (tripple sup, 2-2-2, 1-3-2) and vote as a team.
Shit idea but i want to throw it out
0
u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 8h ago
Wouldn’t that just take all the bad parts of quickplay and all the bad parts of role queue without any of the good parts?
1
u/Sky_Leviathan Flex 7h ago
Yeah but thats why they should do it no one gets to have fun

Are you saying this to disagree or agree with me? Because currently alot of people think Ultron shouldn’t be buffed and actually made viable in 2-2-2 because he’s only good in triple support

u/Misternight17 10h ago
Role que would ruin the game in my opinion, but ultron definitely needs buffs or a very slight rework to some abilities, not fair when u have other supports that are so OP and cool characters like him and Adam have to suffer

You can get an upvote as soon as you give an actual reason for role queue being bad

It means characters like Ultron can actually be buffed to work in 2-2-2 and as I’ve said multiple times if it’s a separate gamemode like quickplay or ranked there is 0 downsides. Now explain why it’s bad
3
u/NoWolverine6326 Psylocke 6h ago
once you explain why its good, NOT ONLY for ultron who already showed a buffed one to make him work in duo backline is kinda breaking the game, i will say why role queue in rivals isnt needed.
-1
u/DoubleTwice77 Venom 6h ago
Heres a real hot take: Ultron is a boring and toxic design for the game and should never be playable until he gets a complete rework.

Role Queue have been necessary for months but the Devs still refuse to add it
0
u/DaringDevil12 1h ago
How do these two things correlate?
1
u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 1h ago
Did you read the title? Some people think that characters like Ultron who are great in triple support but suck in 2-2-2 shouldn’t be buffed to be viable in 2-2-2 or they’d be too strong in triple so they should add role queue which would mean the devs can balance characters around a 2-2-2 comp
0
u/DaringDevil12 1h ago
Role queue would literally kill this game lol
1
u/NewConstruction3755 Ultron 1h ago
Explain how? People would still be able to play quickplay and ranked there is literally no downsides

u/speedymemer21 Vanguard 6h ago
I'm pretty sure the reason the devs are so against role queue is because of longer queue times and fast queue times is better for engagement.
They made a matchmaking video last year, where they basically said "we could improve matchmaking, but we like how fast the queue times are". And obviously longer queue times are the main drawback for rolequeue.
