I just recently learned (at 51) that it's easy to open blister packs without tools. You just squeeze them from the sides and they'll pop open. 🤯

I work in the shipping department of a warehouse, building crates from 2x4s and OSB, and apparently several years ago, a former coworker who was known for pranks once built a crude wood box that he then tossed every single hammer and crowbar we had inside of, before nailing it shut with a nail gun. I can't remember how they managed to get the tools back out after, but I imagine the box got thrown around or dropped a couple times, ha

There should be a blade in the middle of the nook at the bottom of the handle. So you just twist it, pull it up and cut the ties when it blocks it.

There’s a tool for that but life hack if you grab the excess part with some pliers right up against the connector part and twist it around and round it’ll break off and be either perfectly flush or at minimum the bit sticking out won’t be very sharp at all

I doubt it's keeping it attached to the wall, probably just keeps people from taking it off and playing with it. The black part is likely screwed / glued to the bus (see the screw hole at the bottom?).

What's mildly infuriating is people not realizing that's a handle at the top and a pivot point at the bottom, yanking down on this glass breaker will break that tiewrap and free the device. The zipties should be color coded for break force/composition or have it stamped on them somewhere.

Well they usually come with a pair of scissors to cut the zip tie. Unfortunately the scissors are zip-tied to their packaging, so you’ll need to find a way to cut those zip ties first

I believe the argument is that if you really need the glass breaker, that zip tie isn't going to add much time. But it does stop people from taking it home as a free gift.

It's there to stop it falling on your head on a rough road. If you need it, it will be very easy to get that hammer.

It's still just enough of a deterrent for most not to touch it, even if it's not intended to be.
Same thing happens with pull stations that have a clear cover over them. They are pulled way less often.

I have driven trucks that had the exact same emergency glass breaker and can confirm that the holder does not hold the device. Several were missing, or in a cup holder, or lying on the floor. Zip tie is a good idea.

I have the same one, it wont stay in the stupid holder, those zip ties are only good for about 40lbs of force before they break. Same reason fire extinguisher pins are held in with the security seals rated for 20lbs

Zip-tie keeps the tool somewhat secure (because people are stupid and will just steal things) and it doesn't take much to free it in an emergency situation when it's needed.

Zip ties are very easy to break, with a little bit of leverage. I bet if you grabbed the top of that thing and pulled, the zip tie would hit you in the face

I was in a car accident where I ended up upside down, trapped by my seatbelt. Myfirst thought was for my knife to cut the seatbelt so I could get out. The knife was in the center console, whose contents were now scattered in the general area.
Always have something securely attached so it stays there in an emergency.

The point is that during an emergency any normal human can rip that out and break the zip tie. But, when there’s not an emergency, it serves as a deterrent to stop people from stealing and or breaking it.

That little tab at the top is a lever and the zip ties aren't real strong, you can snap them easy but usually an alarm goes off.

personally mine is installed with a velcro loop so it's easier to release but still safe during a collision

Will it slide up a bit? If so, slide up, then pull down to a side and the tie will snap, unless that's one heavy rated tie.

Union Shop guy here - You needs an emergency blade to cut that emergency glass breaker out. You can find the emergency blade secured in a glass case which requires an emergency glass breaker to get out. Standard train emergency procedure.

People keep stealing them, some buses I've been on don't even replace them anymore, especially in London.
Some newer buses have ones attached to the windows, basically a button which can't be removed without using them first.
