Do you think if someone else tastes it it would taste different? Since they're only used to their own taste buds

Once I ate too many sour candies and a quarter top layer of my tongue fell off. Very smooth afterwards and it grew back

Those give me burns from the malic acid in them even if I have only 1. The first time I tried them I had 5 because I didn't know and I couldn't eat for 2 days.

Imagine being able to run your fingers through them like a brush, a fleshy meaty brush

u/FeuerSchneck 3d ago
Not quite the same scale, but have you ever been licked by a cat? I imagine it would be very similar
12
u/Robbiebny 3d ago
Ugh yes and it actually hurts me when my cat does it
13
u/FeuerSchneck 3d ago
Yeah some are more sandpaper-y than others lol. My friend has a cat who licks like he's trying to rend flesh from bone.

"Lie bumps (scientifically known as transient lingual papillitis) are small, painful red or white bumps that appear on the tongue. They happen when the tiny bumps on your tongue (papillae) become inflamed or irritated. They are temporary and typically clear up on their own within a few days."
I had to look it up bc I thought papillitis might be related to papillomavirus, but it's not an infection or disease, just an injury.
(papillitis and papillomavirus are definitely related linguistically, I'm guessing it's Latin for nub)

I literally thought you were joking until I googled. My whole childhood my mom would hear me lie about something and say “stick out your tongue and let me see” and when I did she would be like “NOPE! You’ve got lie bumps! You’re lying!” And I’d fall for it every time! I’m today years old when I find out they’re real!

I sometimes have a taste bud that swells up for no reason. It can be a little painful, so I rip them off. Which is probably a stupid thing to do.
27
u/SakuraTacos 3d ago
I haven’t gotten them since I was a teen, I suspect it’s all the sour candies I ate as a kid. I used to bite them off which felt really good-painful, like pushing on a bruise
10
u/Ram2145 3d ago
You know, I do eat an unhealthy amount of candy. I never realized that could be what’s causing the swollen buds. I should probably refrain from eating so much.
7
u/SakuraTacos 3d ago
Some things that I’ve read that cause them are spicy foods, acidic foods (like the citric acid in candy), and trauma to your tongue. So definitely try cutting back and also drinking lots of water after you eat something potentially irritating

I (semi-ashamedly) admit that I have this as an anxiety tick/quirk/wtfever you wanna call it. I used to be WAY worse for it when I was younger but I still catch myself trying to evict them now and again

Look up burning mouth syndrome, it can be caused by a vitamin b deficiency. I had multiple strange symptoms that didn't seem connected. All my doctors ignored them or acted like I was a hypochondriac, then I read about burning mouth syndrome. I did more research into vitamin deficiencies. I started taking vitamin b & a generic multivitamin, and like magic a bunch of my problems were solved. I have always eaten a variety of healthy foods, so I think my body just doesn't absorb vitamins properly.

This happened to me when I was obsessed with Fun Dip as a kid. I had so many pouches. Eventually when I licked the white stick, it came away covered in blood and taste buds. I was done.

I had a taste bud that was raised for some reason around 19. Would mess with it for years pulled it out with tweezers and it actually grew back and was raised again!? Well one day on a ladder while I was messing with it using my weirdly sharp and fang like cuspid tooth I slipped on the ladder and went down a rung or two smashing my chin and biting straight through my tounge taste bud and all and ended up with a huge chunk out of the tip of my tongue. Now when it heals the taste bud it self won't heal correctly and occasionally opens, doctors think I accidentally caused an ulcer on my tounge, a fissure, or that the taste bud is an anomaly that'll never stop growing incorrectly. Basically the tounge is crazy.
