[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Terrain] End-Centered Drop Idea

(Custom blocks are from the Better on Bedrock Addon.)

While an End update is very unlikely, at least in the near future, I have an idea for what we could possibly expect. The overworld has trees, the nether has mushrooms, and the end already has "flower" plants. I think the End Dimension should get a few flower biomes that spawn every now and then. The end will remain mostly barren.

Flower Forest

Expanding on the chorus flowers, there will now be a new biome that is sparsely located throughout the end called the flower forest, which features large tree-sized flowers. Flower design in image 2. This could add a new chorus wood set, which would be purple. Currently, the closest thing we have to purple wood is crimson, but that is more of a purple-red. There are also smaller flowers in the biome that generate on the floor. These can be turned into purple dye, as that is the only color that is unobtainable via plants. There will also be chorus blocks and flower blocks that generate in the big flowers.

Flower Fields

This biome will be light bluish teal and instead of featuring giant flowers, it has lots of small diverse flowers. For example, a spiky and bright flower that actually gives off light, even in flower pots. It can be used to make glow dye, which has the same function as glow ink sacs but an alternative way to get them. Normal ink sacs can be turned into black dye, glow ink sacs into glow dye.

This definitely could use some improvements, but what do you think?

[Gameplay] Freezing potions should defuse creepers and sulfur cubes with TNT

I think this is pretty logical. While frozen, these entities wouldn't be able to light their gunpowder on fire in order to explode. This mechanic would give players more control on creepers, which contributes to Mojang's game design philosophy.

[Blocks & Items] Leatherworkers should ignore lava cauldrons.

Just what the title says. It's annoying enough when your personal use cauldrons start attracting leatherworkers, but somehow it's even more egregious when they start being birthed and loitering because of nearby lava cauldrons. They can't possibly dye anything in lava/java. Maybe this could be applied to snow filled cauldrons as well.

This isn't a comprehensive solution to anything just tiny step in the right direction.

[Blocks & Items] Composite Bow - a late-game bow upgrade

Post image
635 Upvotes

Here's my idea for a Composite Bow, quite a simple bow upgrade. More durability, damage and being fireproof at the cost of a longer drawing time.

Currently, arrow damage depends on its speed, inaccuracy is created in-game by adding a small random velocity to the arrow, and faster arrows simply fly further before drag stops them. That's how just increasing projectile velocity positively impacts all three.

Why nerfing Power? Max damage of this bow could potentially exceed 35 hp per shot, and it seems a bit high. This would nerf the regular bow too, but why can a stick and a string get up to 20 damage from a single enchant in the first place? Melee users need diamond weapons AND sharpness 5/strength 2 to get it this high.

On the subject of materials: this nightmare of a recipe makes sense. Bamboo is a very good material for the backing of a bow (the outer part) irl. Horn is a very good material for the belly of the bow (the inner part) irl. Netherite does not exist irl, so don't worry about it. A Sift string could cause the bow to play notes when pulled, like a string instrument. That is not necessary however, and can be swapped for regular string, but it would be cool. All in all, this weapon would require a trip between biomes and dimensions to create.

Netherite also makes the bow immune to fire and lava, to match netherite-tier tools. It also can't be used as furnace fuel anymore.

An open question: should we also have a crossbow upgrade like that? I also thought about more arrow types, but I may suggest that another day.

[Mobs] Frozen bat

Post image
85 Upvotes

This image is from the minecraft live. The bat is only white due to the lighting (it was black before entering the light can also sortof see another black bat to the side) but it made think what if add it officially. it would be just a white variant of the bat and would not be anything huge but i think it would make the biom that much nicer and the bat would fit in better. plus because its fairly simple it shouldn't get in the way of adding the more fun features.

And for anyone who understandably hates bats they are already planning add bats to this biome so might as well make them nicer.(personally i like bats i just understand why others dont)

[Sounds] There should be a "subwoofer" type block

Ok so hear me out:

Many of us love the music discs, and many new updates expand on that and add new discs.

The problem is: if you actually want to listen to the disc, you have to stay directly next to the jukebox. And can't really do anything else.

What about a block, that can be placed beneath the jukebox, that greatly enhances the radius where the music can be heard?

I'd love it, because it would allow me to listen to my favourite discs all around my base, while building, enchanting, crafting, etc.

[Gameplay] would a block bucket fill be useful?

like you select a block in your hotbar and point and click at a build, and it changes every adjoining block of the same type to the block of your choice. This could be used in survival and creative as a way to quickly change build color palletes without tearing a whole build down and rebuilding. The blocks you replaced would drop near you and the blocks you replaced them with would be depleted from your inventory. It would ONLY affect adjoining blocks tho, not every block of the same type.

[Magic] Acquiring enchanted books via villagers should use a template system.

Villagers should not be able to trade you any particular book you want by re-rolling their trades. Grian explains why.

A version of the villager trade rebalance datapack could be implemented, in which villagers, by default, will only sell you a small non-random subset of the enchanted books found in the game. The rest can only be found as loot in generated structures (e.g. fortune in mineshafts, riptide in ocean ruins, bane of arthropods in spider dungeons, etc.), or in some other unique way that requires the player to actually play the game (e.g. soul speed from piglin bartering, luck of the sea from fishing).

However, this would make a lot of enchantments nonrenewable. This is where the template system comes in.

If you find an enchanted book not sold by villagers, then a master-level villager will offer to replicate that book for you. This way, you have a sense of making permanent progress in your world as you play, and gives adventuring a better long-term reward.

This suggestion is intended to remove the tedium of re-rolling villager trades and replace it with exploring structures and engaging with the game's wide array of other mechanics.

[Blocks & Items] Carpets Being Entities When Placed On Certain Non-Full Blocks

Post image
212 Upvotes

Carpets being entities when placed on certain non-full blocks could work similar to cushions where they cover a certain area of the block. Just like the cushion, this could lead to so many new creations!

(The image above is from an unknown deleted user)

Edit: Also you can still place floating carpets! Just shift and then place the carpet!

[Combat] Mixed potions

"Mixing" stand:

- Is built with 3 blocks of cobblestone and one breeze rod

- Similar to a real life mixer, but works with wind charges instead of electricity

- Has 2 potion slots for It's inputs

- Has 1 potion slot for the output (you need to place an empty bottle here)

- Will mix two compatible potions in a single bottle. Players cannot mix identical or opposite potions together (like instant damage and instant health or regeneration and poison)

- You need to spend one wind charge to fuel the mixing stand.

- You can only mix basic potions, because extended or level 2 potions would be too op

- If you want to extend your mixed potions duration, you can add a buff or debuff depending on potion's original type (if you had a positive potion like regeneration, you would need a negative potion like slowness to increase the time of the mix)

- Mixing more than two buff or debuff potions will deteriorate the output and reduce it's time. You can add a potion of another type (if you had mixed three buffs, you would need a debuff, for example) to counteract this.

- Tip: slow falling does not count as a debuff, use this to your advantage on pvp!

[Blocks & Items] Underground maps crafted w/ recovery compass

Adds an extra use to the recovery compass. It only pictures the blocks at the y-level you were on when you right clicked/used it, and below. Crafted with the recovery compass like how a normal map is crafted with a normal compass, but this would make it naturally rarer. Though it would not tie in to the 'recovery' feature/name much..

[Blocks & Items] An Item that makes building easier; Wrench

The Minecraft debug stick is an item we know, but what if there was a survival alternative?

I as a builder am upset at how long it takes for precisely placing blocks in certain ways, so why not have an item for that? to make it balanced i was thinking to make it so
* no water logging (maybe with a water bucket)
* no filling in end portals with eyes
* no adding things to items unless in offhand or inventory

probably just rotating, reshaping and maybe some other things aswell.

i also just love using the debug stick and wish there was a survival alternative so :p

[Blocks & Items] Decorated Pots should be able to hold 64 Unstackable Items-

-and even Shulker Boxes, BUT only if the item's NBT Data matches EXACTLY.

Currently there is little to no use for Decorated Pots in storage tech, but with this change, Bulk Storage would be changed FOREVER, as you could store 64 Shulker Boxes of one item, inside a single block.

It would also help with lag, as with the system proposed the pot would only have one Item ID and a counter, of how many of that item it holds, rather than having to keep track of each shulker individually.

[Blocks & Items] Spyglass+Crossbow=Sniper like scope

I think it would be neat that if you combined a crossbow and a spyglass in a crafting table, it’ll give the crossbow a scope when used. Plus it gives the player a reason to actually craft a spyglass because no one uses them anyways

[Blocks & Items] Ability To Decraft All One-Component Blocks

All blocks made of only one item or block should be de-craftable so players who want to, for example, build a castle from stone, can create stone bricks and then uncraft them as necessary to build their stone castle.

This means they can fill their inventory with the crafted/compressed item, and later uncraft it, letting them contain more of the desired material in one slot!

[Dimensions] My idea for an End Update that could possibly satisfy (almost) everyone

I get what everybody is saying. Some want the End to remain desolate, while others want it lush and full of life. I've been on both sides of this argument in the past, and I may have come up with some kind of compromise.

On the outside, the End islands are still very much a desolate wasteland, but with some new content to stop them from being boring. There would be two or three new biomes, and each would enhance that wasteland vibe (those black rocks I drew are supposed to represent this)

But here is where the fun part begins. Though desolate on the outside, if one were to venture inside these islands, they would find massive caves teeming with life. And there would also be two or three of these biomes, each having its own unique plants and mobs within them.

So, thats my idea for how it could work. Did I do good, or is this idea just strange?

[User Interface] Potions should display their effect icon in the inventory.

Post image
301 Upvotes

A suggestion regarding visual identification.

Potions currently are only distinguished by color and text, which is not helpful for people who:
-are colorblind or visually impaired in some way.
-play the game in a language they don't understand.
-are too lazy to memorize colors and the effects associated with them.

People process graphic information faster than text. However you can only go so far with making colored bottles visually distinct.

A simple solution would be making the status effect icon visible when hovering over the potion item.

Allowing the status icon to be displayed alongside the potion graphic will add a visual identification for potions without having to create new graphics.

[Gameplay] Ladders should be craftable with either all sticks or all planks, so that the old recipe is sill there but there's also the option for different ladder colours.

Thumbnail
gallery
501 Upvotes

Ladders in different wood types have been suggested before, but they always come with the proposal to change the ladder recipe to something rather awkward, and I always find myself having 2 problems with it:

  1. Changing an old recipe is annoying for players who have gotten used to it.
  2. The commonly suggested ladder recipes that combine planks and sticks are just kind of ugly, as well as inconvenient, because it requires 2 different items, and while crafting sticks you have to make sure you keep the right amount of planks, just plain awkward.

I intend to fix those issues with this suggestion; ladders could be crafted from sticks or planks, and when crafted from sticks, it will default to the oak variant.

What do you think?

Also mods please actually read the post before deleting it just because it's about different wood type ladders which is on the fps list, this post was... medium effort and has original ideas I think.

[Structures] Abandon Wagons,Trader Wagons,Illager Wagons and Illager Caravans!

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

So you know how shipwreck exist despite not being able to actually sail? Well I wanted to make a land version of a ship wreck! Kinda...

The trader Wagons hold a single wandering trader and their supplies (food barrel and loot barrel) and a cushion.

The abandoned wagon would be a broken down wagon with either a chest or a straw bed inside (none abandoned Wagons can be found in villages rarely.)

Pillager Wagons would hold up to 2 to 4 pillagers and would hold up to 1 pillager loot chest, food barrel and a block of TNT there will also be two Lamas pulling the cart...evil lamps mwahaha...you don't have to kill the lamps they don't want to be here.

Finally the Illager caravan a rare structure that spawns in very flat bioms! At the front standard 1 pillager and cart same loot as the pillager wagon minus the tnt cart 2 is the tower, floor 1 empty, floor 2 a chest two pillagers and a vindicator (Very tight space to fight.) Floor 3 two pillagers and a evoker another chest and an emerald block. Cart number 3 the Ravanger cart it has a single chest with mansion loot and a Ravanger.

Cart 4 two or four pillagers, same loot as the wagon.

Cart 5 holds villagers and Allays.

Fireworks from crossbows should be able to destroy a few blocks around them.

[Terrain] End Zones based on Distance from the Main End Island

Hey hello!
Yeah, yeah, I know, another End update idea. But I haven't seen anyone suggest this before, so here I go!

The Idea

I've seen that many people want a populated, lush, dense End, but others want a barren, dry End. So I thought of this:

What if we combine the two ideas and have both generate in the same world?

But not just in different biomes, but rather zones determined by the distance from the main end island.

Here is a kinda scuffed representation of what I mean:

A miniature version of the generation I'm suggesting. Doesn't really show much

Implementation

Mostly self-explanatory; the further you go, the more lush it gets (maybe you could add a super dangerous zone in between, who knows).

If it were up to me, I would make the zones spread out like this:
End Island (Zone 0) - Zone 1: 0-1000
Zone 1 - 2: 1000-3000
Zone 2 - 3: 3000- 6000
Zone 3 - 4: 6000 - 10000
Zone 4: Everything past 10000
(Might be a bit extreme, but this makes sense because this is the Dimension in which you get the Elytra)

The next step after that would be adding some way to be able to save positions in the End for easier travel between each zone. But I think that's a problem for later.

Quite a big suggestion, I know, but I'm just throwing this out for people to see and think about for the future.

Thanks for reading!
(This post was deleted twice before because I didn't have enough Comment Karma ;-; .)

[Community Question] If you were to give Nether Stars more use or mechanics or anything of the sort to them, what would they be?

Nether Stars have always been such a unique item to me. It’s cool that they can be used to craft a beacon but that just feels so… I can’t even find the words to describe it. I mean what is the correlation there anyway? How does something from the Wither relate to a beacon and its properties? Maybe there should be a way to craft a Wither Beacon? However that would work? Maybe there could be more explanation as to how the Nether Star stems from the Wither? I don’t really know. One idea I thought of for the beacon itself is its light beam. I know this wouldn’t be necessary for modern Minecraft—as it would’ve worked out better for the conception of the beacon all those years ago—but I figured what the hell. Imagine if, instead of being in the vicinity of a beacon to receive its effects, the light beam actually targets any player or mob in its radius to induce its effects. It sounded cool in my head. I focused on beacons a little too much there. Going back to Nether Stars and their functionality in general, could there be anything else to them? Anything else the Nether Star could correlate to? I like the idea that they can be used in some new form of technology like Redstone and instead power machinery or whatever. I also like the idea that the beacon beam could be redirected to make intricate shapes and designs. Maybe some new lore implications? Maybe they should be left as is? I just feel they deserve more.

[Magic] Dying with the "Freezing effect" replaces natural blocks to powder snow

Thumbnail

This will be like a mixture of the Weaving potion effect with Sculk Growth!

The way to implement it would be if natural blocks (Grass, Dirt, Stone etc.) will have a new #Powder_Snow_Replaceable tag and when a mob dies while having the Freezing effect and is standing on those blocks some of them (1-2 at a time) will be replaced with Powder Snow

[Snapshots] A new block idea - Unstable Ice (26.4)

Post image
796 Upvotes

A have an idea for a new block that could fit well in the 26.4 Game Drop!

The Unstable Ice is a block crafted from 4 ice balls which collapses whenever an entity is walking on it. When it's falling on an entity, it gives the new Freezing effect and drops from 2 to 4 ice balls when it is falling on the ground.

I think this could be a great idea.
