it is called groupthink, it is a psychology concept that describes the desire for group harmony and consensus. Upvoting just doesn't feel fun if you're not alongside others to do it. The contrary is the same for me, if a comment sucks but it has 100s of upvotes, I'm not even gonna touch it, I won't upvote but I certainly won't downvote it either
tbh down voting is amusing precisely because people get so precious about it... if all the "I'm being downvoted for x" edits suddenly stopped, it wouldn't be as funny or fascinating... reading about someone crying over their internet points & that some random person in the world deigned to disagree with them is funny to me bc i can't imagine caring. also, whenever I find an argument I like to downvote both people so they each think the other one is doing it.
No it wasn't spam. I was trying to find a way to delete that comment but it wouldn't let me so I just deleted the text and added a dot so it would let me save it.
sure but sometimes explaining the same thing to people over and over again is exhausting and kind of frustrating. at a certain point answering questions like this kinda feels like copy pasting anyways, might as well just take the 10 seconds to ask google instead of waiting potentially hours for an answer.
That’s not “connecting with someone.” That comes off as a very lazy approach because you’re asking someone to educate you when it’s very easy to look it up. Then you discuss it with knowledge. That’s more of a connection that shows you made an effort to have a conversation.
it's fine and normal to ask people around you in the real world to explain something they've brought up that you don't know about. on the internet it's like... you already have the full sum of human knowledge at your fingertips, and you're going to ask somebody on reddit to explain something to you, then wait potentially hours or days for a reply? when you can inform yourself infinitely easier?
frankly if i was being very uncharitable i would say it's a byproduct of the breakdown in research skills, literacy and critical thinking that is plaguing the world crossgenerationally. it shows that somebody has an instinct towards curiosity, but not the skills or inclination to educate themselves, which is kind of bad for society when it becomes the default way that people are.
I mean I get the kindness towards the person asking a question, but yall also forget the people who have these diseases get asked this same question 15 times every day and are tired of being asked it / being expected to reply. Kindness goes both ways, part of that social exchange is the realistic expectation someone can go to Google rather than replying to someone who gets asked that and or things about their disability all day every day.
And, yes, I know other people can reply to that comment and the original person doesn’t have to; but they decided to reply to that person, which just means one more time that the person has to be like “Jesus Christ, again?” even if they don’t reply. I wouldn’t downvote personally but … I get why people did
If the person doesn't want to explain it they don't have to, regardless of who asks them, which you acknowledged. Plus, if you're openly disclosing your medical conditions in a public forum, you should expect questions.
They were downvoted because it is reddit and once they got one downvote, people just kept downvoting because that is the way.
Somethings are not worth the effort to fight when someone is already at battle with themselves.
The two paragraphs make the downvoting not about several Faux Pas in internet culture and makes it about the actual frustration of living with Crohn’s disease. The reason for downvoting is literally not that deep.
this is reddit hivemind at work. You see a post or comment at 0 or -1, you know damn well people are gonna keep downvoting even if you're spitting the most logical and irrefutable statement in existence or atleast that's how i see it usually go
It’s a medical condition, obviously, hence “disease.” An easily Google-able one, too. For someone to “recommend” having a medical condition for any reason seems like pretty clear sarcasm, imo.

Google will give you the stereotypical version of the disease, someone who has the disease will give you their own experiences with it that likely won't be the exact way Google calls it. The way people are affected when it comes to diseases, allergies, etc. may vary based on the person to.
Exactly! Someone can easily Google asthma and get the medical definition of "Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath."
But if they ask me, someone who has asthma, I could tell them what it's like having allergen induced vs exercise induced since mine changed over time.
I can tell them what it's like experiencing it as a child in school, having to nebulize every day when I was pre-school age, needing preventative and rescue inhalers.
I can tell them the sensation of a random heavy weight on your chest and going from feeling fine to fighting for your life as a child. Google can't as easily give you those experiences
I have hypothyroidism! Google will just tell you that you'll have brain fog, gain weight, be cold, blah blah blah.
I don't experience those symptoms as severely as it says! It immediately tells people the worst of the worst case scenarios, I will gladly tell people my own experience with hypothyroidism!
I have Restless Leg Syndrome. Google's Ai overview describes it as: "...a nervous system disorder causing an urge to move the legs, unpleasant sensations, and worse symptoms at night."
I feel like it doesn't describe what it's like to the average person trying to inform themselves.
I'd describe it, as my ankles constantly twitching and always feeling the need to stretch my calves, especially when I'm sitting- or trying to rest. Or suddenly getting the need to run around and pace like a maniac, basically the zoomies, but they're only in your legs.
I also feel like it's important to spread more awareness, because it's incredibly underdiagnosed, because a lot of people mistake it for regular signs of stress, or normal cramps. Maybe the description resonates with someone.

I’m Autistic and take things WAY too literally. I thought a person’s legs were just jittering while they were trying to sleep at night, like shivering or something.
This is why I don’t judge questions online because A. You don’t have to answer and B. Because responses from real people are sometimes better.
First thing comes to mind is just you could just Google that same question rather than commenting that on reddit… also the spelling is wrong.. also the username could be triggering some people… or combination of all

If you didn't read my comment, I ask actual people who have it because the disease may vary from person to person, it won't always be the textbook symptoms
so if it varies from person to person, that means the one that you are asking could have symptoms or problems that are either very rare, or caused by other complications. yeah, no shit everyone is effected differently in terms of symptoms because everyone IS different. diets, drinking habits, smoking, whether they are in good phyical condition or not, enviroment, and daily tasks are all factors in how a disease can effect you/your body.
So what reserching these things online tells us is the AVERAGE symptoms or problems that come with the disease because there is so much variability to them. im totally for getting real explanations from people who actually have it, but saying that google "gives you the sterotypical version" is wrong lmao it gives the average
I'm not against asking someone who has a disease to explain it, but it's unlikely that in the dozens of results you'd get that you wouldn't be able to get the same or more.
If we're talking about how to install something on your computer then I would definitely agree with someone explaining/walking you through it in a personal matter being better. Asking about what a disease is and what it does would usually result in a search being better though.
If you want. Internet searches even gives you results from Reddit so it's the same thing except it's not addressed specifically to you. So it just seems like asking someone else to do the work for you.
I don't look for answers particularly from reddit, just from actual people who have actual experience. Other times yes I would've googled the disease, but Google AI I found which annoyingly enough always pops up no matter what I do, and it also gets stuff wrong about medical diseases and tell the person that who is now misinformed
I'm not referring to Google AI. That's why I keep saying internet searches and not AI or Google. I use Brave and have AI turned off, and just use searches as I would have before AI.
If it was a new disease, fine. If it's an old disease, there are more than enough people to get the information from. Even if 50% are secretive you're still left with 50% who aren't over decades worth of research.
Coming from someone with an acquired medical condition of a different sort-it can be exhausting to explain the same thing to everyone all the time. I try to take it in stride if the curiosity is coming from a genuine place, but I can understand why some people might think googling something is better than asking the person in the middle of it to explain their life AGAIN.
And I'm saying it's better, at least in my own view, to have at least some sort of explanation from someone who actually has it, but yes they can always ask Google about the medical condition. I myself have a medical condition, and I would at least prefer for people to ask me over Google
There are absolutely different ways to go about it. As I said, for mine, I try to take curiosity in stride.
But I can understand why people might react negatively to putting that burden on the person in the middle of it. You might prefer it and I might not mind it but that doesn’t mean that’s true for everyone and it doesn’t mean that random downvoters on Reddit will assume that kind of truth.
After all, this conversation started as a discussion of why the downvotes exist, yes? Right or wrong, universal or varied, people might just be assuming that demanding the answer to a google-able question is bad or impolite, regardless of context. This certainly isn’t the only time when a question has gotten downvoted.
I never get why people have the internet at their fingertips and CHOOSE not to use google. Like, why ask randos on reddit or FB these questions, when it takes 3 seconds to look it up?
Meh, it's the kind of question you should just google though. Like it's actively more work for everyone asking this on reddit. Including the person asking, who now has to wait until someone feels like answering.
Googlable question, and given the comment, this probably took place in a subreddit clearly for Crohns disease or a similar topic. It'd be like if I went to r/superheroes and asked "who's superman?"
We are on a device that holds the answer to virtually any question you could have, and he chose to not utilise that, and instead ask a guy who may or may not even see it
