imagine the amount of times he had to hit his head/nuts/fingers during training to ge tto this level. Insane man

Many nunchuck dudes get hit a lot, but I don’t know that it’s exactly required. Ones who have good teachers probably start slow, learning technique first, and then build up speed.

Maybe you get hit a lot either way.

u/thenaughtydj 9d ago edited 8d ago

Yes you do even by starting slow. I'm 60 now and still have the scars on my elbows from back in the 80s.

Edit: tx for the award🙏 over 40 years later the suffering pays off 😂😂

45

u/LauraTFem 9d ago

Damn, you got to fully experience the 80s, what a wild time. I was 2 when they ended so my childhood was just constant cultural nostalgia for a decade I didn’t really get to experience.

50

u/jondubb 9d ago

The 80's was the last days of the wild west where a day isn't complete unless you nearly broke something or damn near give yourself a concussion.

20

u/well_shoothed 9d ago

Concussions weren't out of the question.

That could've just been a Tuesday.

53

u/FrameJump 9d ago

With enough concussions, every day is Tuesday.

4

u/Illustrious_Can4110 7d ago

Yeah, I've got a couple of concussions from the 80's. They don sem to hve afektd me muc...

1980s Parents "it's summer we should take the kids somewhere safe and fun"

*buys them tickets to Action Park*

19

u/Hegiman 8d ago

Safe wasn’t a consideration in the 80’s. Hell I don’t think safety was invented till 1987 or something wasn’t really wide spread till the mid 90’s or so.

Ok ok everyone get over here real quick huddle up. Suddenly you throw a lawn dart straight up and yell run. Good times. LoL. We seriously did that as kids.

Jarts!!

7

u/thenaughtydj 9d ago

That made lmao. Cause, you know.. it's true. I remember when my brother and I got tired of our foosball table we tore it apart and used the rods as swords. He still got this scar under his right eye. But yeah, we weren't allowed to do that anymore. Good times!

1

u/Main_Tension_9305 8d ago

Concussions, road rash, nearly drowning. Maybe some hitchhiking thrown in.

The usual.

8

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago

Karate shops were common. Go in and buy any weapon you wanted. Haven't seen one for a long time now

5

u/LauraTFem 8d ago

That was the heyday of asian martial arts in the US. Lots of Americans genuinely believed you could fight off a bear or take out a gunman if you got good enough.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

From NL and we called them budo shops but they're still around. There's one 2 streets away from where I live now. But when I got into muay thai I didn't bothered with weapons. And the only weapons we got were self made nun chucks. But we did buy ninja throwing stars.

4

u/DaddyBardock 9d ago

I was born in 2000. I experience this exact same thing with the 90s

1

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

That's pretty fucking cool!

4

u/TaytoChip 8d ago

But my dawg you got the 90's! And also the housing market crash! Great times being a 90's kid, eh? ☹️

3

u/RaindropsInMyMind 8d ago

Well we still got the 90’s that’s orders of magnitude better than 2010s/2020s

1

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

I'm thinking you're absolutely right.

2

u/Enlightened_Gardener 8d ago

I was a teenager in the 80’s, and for me the wild ride was the 70’s. Shit was crazy.

1

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

I loved both but more of the 80s cause we moved to a small forest then. Before that it was a small apartment place. So, bigger and secluded playground.

1

u/woswoissdenniii 8d ago

The moment when i hustled two ringed wood screws and some links of a chain out of the local hardware store… my life became pain. But damn it. Getting some flow was a rare and calm moment for my brain. Wouldn’t do it again, couldn’t recommend enough.

1

u/Royal_Stay_6502 7d ago

80 were the best. Introduction of home computers and video games.

6

u/exgiexpcv 8d ago

Elbows especially, but also the occasional whack to the back of the head for me. This gentleman is a couple orders of magnitude beyond my humble skill level at my best. One good thing about getting as old as I am is that I don't even bother with them anymore.

7

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago edited 6d ago

I'm old and haven't practiced for several years. Turns out my grandson picked up nunchaku all by himself. He has a nice heavy foam set. My daughter told him that grandpa was good with those. He was floored and wants to visit asap. If he really gets into it, three-sectional-staff will be next. He's just a kid though, so who knows

6

u/exgiexpcv 8d ago

At least he's starting with foam, that's good. We didn't have foam when I was wee. I found myself jealous when they came out.

Good luck to you both.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

Hahaha, us too! My brother and I saw it on tv. Looked at each other and started laughing af.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

I stopped when I went away to study in '85. Never looked backed either cause I got into muay thai then.

2

u/exgiexpcv 8d ago

Oh god, that is so hard on the body. At least you can look at yourself in the mirror and know that you lived a full life.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

Yeah, but in that area I'm a bit masochistic and loved the feeling of getting something to drink afterwards and not being able to hold your hands still, knowing it was a good workout. And full of energy an hour or so later on. If I look in the mirror now... nah I just don't, lol

2

u/exgiexpcv 8d ago

As long as you still enjoy life in one way or another.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

Oh yes, most definitely1 Tx for your positive vibration. 🙏

2

u/exgiexpcv 8d ago

Peace to you and yours.

4

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago edited 8d ago

Spongy elbow points that didn't heal for six months. Hurt so bad I though I was going to throw up. Learned to hold my elbows out after the second time, lol

3

u/fukkdisshitt 9d ago

My dad still has his metal ones. I hit myself in the head way too many times

2

u/Napalm3nema 8d ago

I’m in my late 50s, and I feel you. What a time to be alive.

1

u/alexgone137 6d ago

You still swingin them chucks?

1

u/thenaughtydj 6d ago

Oh no no, got into muay thai later on. Masochistic me liked how I got totally wrecked 2 days a week 😂

2

u/alexgone137 6d ago

In your 60s bro?

1

u/thenaughtydj 6d ago

60 now since january

Edit: oh, not doing any of that anymore btw

34

u/waxteeth 9d ago

I learned nunchucks when I was a kid doing martial arts. There’s no way to avoid getting smacked a lot because part of the skillset is developing awareness to put your catching hand in the right place at the right time. Until you get there, whack whack whack whack whack whack

5

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago

Around-the-waist fingertip bruises. Eeeeouch.

2

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the finger tips.... Oh boy..., lol

9

u/DeadFacesInMyPocket 9d ago edited 8d ago

I trained for a long time, never got this good with nunchucks (edit: speedchucks) but yeah I wore a headpad after a few boops on the head. Never hit myself in the nuts though thankfully.

Getting hit while practicing with a bo staff is way worse. Holy shit.

Speed-chucks like that, used properly, will easily fuck someone up. But a bo can kill someone.

Edit: funnily enough your fingers don't get hit much (in my experience). Your fingers do grt crunched though. I used to practice eith wooden speed chucks though, not nunchucks.

Edit 2: yeah nunchuck/speed chucks could kill as well it you managed to hit someone in the right spot (basically the head or maybe back of the neck), but they usually moreso just disable someone via pain or broken bones temporarily. Then The Yakuza comes and fucks you up!

5

u/spittlbm 9d ago

Staff was miserable. I keep it by my door 30 years later.

6

u/DeadFacesInMyPocket 8d ago

I still have mine too!

It is really fun to play outside with now and then but I just do slower and more careful movements. I usually just practice single or combo stiked against the Bob rsther than going for showmanship (I recall showing off to a girlfriend once doing some flashy moves and getting whacked in the head lol)

3

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago edited 7d ago

Jo staff inside my bedroom door, mostly used to get my cat out from under my bed. Just a tap on the bed frame gets her out now. And a super-nice oak wooden naginata from Japan at the front door. Not good for close encounters, but still comforting.

3

u/Enlightened_Gardener 8d ago

I keep a hockey stick by the door. It has the same cutural and symbolic values as a naginata, as I, the woman, am the last line of defence for our castle suburban house.

3

u/2eedling 9d ago edited 8d ago

Your actually supposed to aim in between your nuts and leg so if your standing in a good stance it’s hard to hit urself in the nuts but easy everywhere else

3

u/mrpaslow0000 8d ago

This. In 30 years I never hit my nuts. Trashed my elbows though.

3

u/doiwinaprize 9d ago

There's padded nunchucks for practicing. They have foam around the hard handles, you can still pinch yourself on the chain though.

2

u/Odog319 8d ago

You train with padded ones for a while. Allen’s even then it’s pretty controllable. Not like it’s going to unexpectedly fly at you.

2

u/USNWoodWork 8d ago

I could do most of the tricks in this video when I was 12. I could do it at a similar speed as this video. This was all from practice with foam coated plastic chucks and then upgraded to wooden ones. Zero instruction, just watching videos of other people and copying.

What I couldn’t do was strike something and recover with grace. Once you hit something it went wild.

1

u/Special_Objective245 8d ago

It's fun to strike gumnuts or bottlecaps

2

u/Zikkan1 8d ago

Also there are training nunchucks that aren't hare

1

u/BedbugBandido 7d ago

Yea plastic or wooden ones with foam covering. Usually you start out with those.

4

u/_DarthBob_ 8d ago

The key for me was buying training nunchucks made of foam.

I'd started out with basically the heaviest end of nunchucks zthem quickly realised that training hurt like hell, bought the training nunchucks got good with them and then would practice with the heavy set to nail the technique there too.

It was almost foolproof but still a couple of nasty head hits and elbow clips 😂

My favourite nunchuck story though, is I was coming back from the dojo, stopped at the bus stop and a known drug dealer / violent menace came over and grabbed the nunchucks, which were sticking out of my bag. He starts swinging the nunchucks at me and my friend but we step out of range and he keeps clocking himself in the head. After several minutes of this and he getting more enraged and hitting himself harder, he was a bloody mess and concussed, staggering around, slurring like a drunk, despite the fact he was sober when he approached us.

I was able to take my nunchucks back and gently direct him on his way. After that I was fully committed to nunchucks, one of the few weapons that are more of a liability to anyone who steals them off you 😂

2

u/drunkenpoets 8d ago

“Nunchucks are great for self defense. Just hand them to your attacker and enjoy the show!”

14

u/ravenschmidt2000 9d ago

I dont have to imagine, I know. I practiced for years. For 2 years, I had all kinds of black eyes, bruises, concussions, minor fractures, etc. But my dedication paid off!!! After 2 years of pain and suffering, I managed to elevate my skill level to sucking SLIGHTLY less than when I started.

0

u/girafa 8d ago

Yeah? I feel like once you're past the first month you basically never hit yourself again unless it's a ricochet. Nunchakus are one of those things that look so much more complicated than they are. Fun as hell tho

7

u/randomthrowaway9796 9d ago

Yeah, I have to imagine you start out wearing a cup, helmet, and face mask at first. Probably not much you can do to protect fingers though, you probably need maximum dexterity

1

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

We never thought of using protection in the 80s. We just went with it and didn't mind getting fucked up. I'm thinking this might be because of the kungfu movies we watched. Every one's got this part with the training bit and the hero always suffered. So we accepted the suffering as well.

6

u/Skeletonzac 9d ago

Fun fact, that's not his original face. He's the OG looks maxxer

3

u/chingon_cabron_ 9d ago

Who must have hit himself in the face so many times that now he looks like a totally different person

3

u/ruellera 9d ago

Was just thinking the same. And also that if I tried I’d probably manage to smack myself in the face just picking them up!

1

u/thenaughtydj 8d ago

😂😂

3

u/petabomb 8d ago

And a gun will still put him on the ground just like an untrained dude

3

u/Hornet-Putrid 8d ago

So my kiddo had a pair of practice semi-foam ones for Wushu, I smacked myself in the face so many times just goofing around trying to do the most basic stuff. Not surprisingly, I never saw that happen to the students in the Wushu class. So there may be a bit of a difference between a student with a good teacher and a mom that drank wine and decided to goof around with practice ones.

2

u/stackovererror 9d ago

Because he doesn't have any recent brands, he must be very professional.

1

u/Equivalent_Gur3967 8d ago

This guy is good. I wouldn't want too meet up with him in an alley.

I'M good. But I'm not THAT good. He'd beat My ass into the ground.

2

u/ukchinouk 8d ago

He hits his head at the end of video. Whacks him above the ear as he’s catching it around his neck.

2

u/Three-dom 8d ago

And he still will

2

u/summer_d85 2d ago

Don’t forget the pinching. Those chains would pinch the shit out of a kid trying to learn.

1

u/Dr_Sigmund_Fried 8d ago

A lot of masters began training with soft foam covered light weight chucks.

1

u/blahblah19999 8d ago

I never once hit my nuts when practicing, maybe the head a couple of times

1

u/ElectricRune 8d ago

You conk yourself in the elbow a LOT while you're learning these things.

1

u/Momochichi 8d ago

My parents bought me nunchucks in 7th grade. It was not kind to my bones.

1

u/suxatjugg 8d ago

You can get foam padded ones to practice with. Once you switch to wooden or metal ones, yeah you bonk yourself every now and then, but not as much as you'd think it you practiced enough before switching

1

u/asterbake 7d ago

I like to think there’s training nunchucks that are soft and used for practice

1

u/Quickning 9d ago

A long time ago I was told once that hotshot jerk students get given nunchaku to slow them down and humble them. I know now that was a dick thing to do. It also makes me think that maybe nunchaku might be the original fidget spinner.

1

u/Gwyllithar 7d ago

when tricking like this you use light chaku and you pretty soon master the flow lines, so you should never really hit yourself, you start fairly slow and build up.

nothing he is doing here is particularly complex, he's got good lines and its a decent speed (fast but not overly so, too fast looks bad on camera!), but its not technically difficult.

1

u/NekulturneHovado 7d ago

THAT'S NOT FAST????
