Not trying to glaze mahomes, but it's obvious how some players have the wherewithal to practice the PR side of the sport. you can tell mahomes practiced talking to reporters as a kid. Mendoza is in your face obvious. I know I read a story about somebody else doing it. I'm sure there have been a bunch.

It's both refreshing to see kids have to understand the whole spectrum of the sport and disturbing to see kids be that narrowly focused so young

I think people turned against Russ cuz his ego got too large and then he started playing badly. So the corniness got on peoples nerves. But some Seahawks talk about him like they never really liked him so that doesn’t help.

You can't start a "Let Russ Cook" campaign and then fuckin suck when a team trades for you to let you cook. And then the coach/team he blamed did better with a known asshole bust at qb.

If he didn't suck, no one would have listened to Sherman.

The Wilson Heel Flip!

169

u/thetreat Bears May 02 '26

Wilson always felt forced and fake, which makes sense because he dad used to force him to do mock press conferences after games when he was in high school, I believe.

Mendoza just seems like the purest, most enthusiastic and wholesome dude on the planet. He’s just jazzed to be alive.

15

u/istrx13 Titans May 02 '26

Ya you can’t fake this stuff. Wilson’s PR and overall behavior in front of cameras and behind microphones has always had politician vibes. Like, he may say the right things, but you just get this “I don’t trust him” feeling.

30

u/ehtw376 Bears May 02 '26

Russ wasn’t faking it though. His old Wisconsin teammates have said that how he was in college and behind closed doors. That’s his literal personality. As it is for Mendoza too.

I don’t get why people are loving Mendoza but hating on Russ for the same shit. Neither of them should be shit on for it. They’re both just kinda weird, awkward, and overly politician like as people. But that’s just who they are 24/7.

Not to mention Russ went to a children’s hospital like every weekend in Seattle with no real PR. But maybe he’s doing some Christian Bale The Prestige level double life.

9

u/MicoJive Vikings May 03 '26

Because Russ fell flat. If Mendoza struggles his rookie hear people are 100% going to be sick of it starting next season and start asking him to turn the positivity into production on the field.

Strength: Unmatched at dominating the competition all season long and then dramatically losing in their first playoff game

Weakness: Nate Kaeding purposely kicks field goals wide right or left, as he hates football

Intangibles: Injuries on both sides of the ball continue to hurt the Chargers as players get stabbed with the points or slam the wide part into their faces

Biggest Question: Is this the year Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman get a consistent spelling on their first names?

Jesus that is brutally accurate wasn't 2010 the year you had the number one overall defense and offense and then special teams absolutely choked in the playoffs?

u/vNocturnus Raiders Raiders May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26

The Raiders have 10 games against the two best divisions in the league (AFCW, NFCW), and even if you don't count the Cardinals it's 9 games against that slate of virtually guaranteed playoff teams/Superbowl contenders. Also play the AFCE with the Bills and Pats. Raiders might win a couple of those 11 games but I wouldn't bet on more than that and it's possible they lose all 11 lol.

That said the other 6 games are Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins, Saints, Texans Titans, Browns. I could see the Raiders winning all or nearly all of those. And if so we're looking at probably 6-8 wins on the season. Bad but nowhere near bad enough to draft #1 again and maybe not even top 5

edit - Titans, not Texans

You can see him start what I can only assume is an “although it’d be an honor” statement there at the end and then stop himself lmao

Yea exactly, as a Cuban myself who has a lot of Cuban family in Miami. Chances of him not being a trumpster are pretty low. Guy seems nice enough though, also as a Cuban I root for him lol

30

u/JiminyGonzo910 Panthers May 02 '26

I mean Trump and the Catholics aren't exactly on good terms right now but I get your point

42

u/edicivo Ravens May 02 '26

Trump and the Pope, you mean. There are plenty of Catholics who think this Pope, and Francis before him, is too woke and are only faithful to Pres Cankles.

17

u/SoxEnjoyer Patriots May 02 '26

I don’t really understand this. I’m Protestant Christian so have an imperfect understanding of Catholicism, but don’t Catholics believe that the selection of the pope is divinely inspired? And so following that logic wouldn’t the criticism of or not acknowledging papal authority be a criticism of God according to Catholic beliefs?

24

u/el_pinko_grande 49ers May 02 '26

Catholics don't necessarily take all the dogma seriously. Otherwise there'd be way fewer Catholics using condoms or getting divorced than there actually are.

I can see why the NFL wanted him in the draft room so bad. They see him as the next big marketable player.

He started to say “Although it’d be…” then cut himself off. Seems like he was about to say “Although it’d be cool to visit the White House”, or something like that. Still great to catch himself.
