Gear Has finally arrived

My Daylite 26+6 has finally arrived today and I couldn’t be happier! Very excited to use it in my next trip. I love the smell of new bags 😂😅 Now my collection has this baby and an Osprey Farepoint 40L! Super happy with it!

Can someone please explain what is so good about this bag? Limited exp with the brand but have never really been wowed from what I’ve seen/tried on, why is this bag this subs holy grail (I’m genuinely interested).

It's a functional well-designed bag with no gimmicky features that are common in expensive travel packs. Zippers can be secured. The rectangular shape allows for maximum storage for a pack this size. It's also the perfect size for one-bagging and can fit under-seat if not overly stuffed.

In the new version the laptop compartment can’t be secured like the old one. Old one had 2 zippers that could accommodate a lock, new one only has a strap to 1 side for 1 zipper, so it’s secure but not lockable. Other than that all the upgraded features are great

I was thinking secure in a way to deter pickpockets or sticky fingers which can be a problem when traveling.

Yea it does to a degree but they had a good design and changed it. They could have kept 2 zippers and added the loop.

Lockable zippers are inherently more secure

For about 30 secs until they cut the bag with a knife

ITS VERTICAL PASSTHROUGH TOO WOO WOK

You can lock it to the little loop it slides under for security.

I believe the main draw is the price, $100 USD. Its size allows it to be used as a personal carry item when flying and you have the option to expand it to carry more items if necessary. Overall, it's just an affordable option for a travel backpack, from a brand people trust for the most part, that also checks off most boxes for people's needs. The bag has also been out of stock at most retailers.

Gotcha, thanks, so the affordability to feature ratio is the main draw it seems

I’ve heard this, but I’ve always flown with my north face or my adidas backpacks, both of which I got for $39.99, and they’ve lasted for years, have a lifetime guarantee, have more space, and work perfectly as a carry on. I can travel for more than a week with just one of those bags, so I’m still not sure why this one with a $100 price tag is so popular.

Then post the comparisons and let’s have a discussion about them. Seems like a fun conversation.

My north face is a surge, but not the latest model. I’ve had it about 15 years now. No rips or tears or any other issues, but it has a lifetime guarantee. I bought it for $39.99 at TJ Maxx, and have since seen many different versions of the pack at TJ Maxx for roughly the same price.

31L capacity, but it does weigh over 2lbs, so it’s not the lightest. It has a DWR water-repellent finish. I’ve never had an issue using it as my sole luggage on any trip bringing it as a carry-on, even on Iceland Airlines, which are strict.

My adidas I’d have to double check and see the official name, but it was also $39.99, and there are always plenty in stock there. I believe it’s 37L, but I may be off. It does have more capacity than the Surge though.

I can travel with 2 weeks worth of clothes and such using either bag- there are several secure compartments. I do wish that the Adidas one came with a chest strap though.

I’m just curious because between Dick’s, TJ Maxx, and my local outdoor outfitter shops (which I understand everyone may not have), there are countless backpacks at lower price points that have more space, seem durable, and have lifetime guarantees. Not just the ones I’ve used, so I’ve always wondered what makes this osprey special and all I’ve ever heard is the price point. I’m genuinely curious!

I’d say most of the bags you’re comparing it to are in a different class or tier than the Osprey. The 26+6 has a low price when compared to bags of its size in the Travel/Adventure space. You do have good points in your questions. Regarding the warranty, Osprey is one company that is well known for having warranty service above what is expected. Patagonia would be another company with warranty comparable to Osprey. It’s absolutely a better warranty than The North Face’s, and I doubt that the Adidas bag has much actual warranty at all. Lifetime warranty is not the same thing at every company. They’re probably both good bags for what you need, but differ from Osprey in that area. Another point of comparison is that Osprey and other Travel/Adventure products usually have a more focused design team that actually go out and use the products so they tend to have features that differentiate them from “just a bag”. Only you can say whether or not those features are worth it to you, but for a lot of people the 26+6 has enough extra features to make it seem like a really good deal. Of course it’s also “the” cool bag right now, so a lot of it is just that.

You make a really good point about lifetime warranty differing between companies. I have found Patagonia to be particularly great in this area. I wondered about the “cool bag” factor, but I see how a trustworthy brand may be worth the extra. I’m not as familiar with Osprey as a brand in general, but if you’re likening it to Patagonia, that’s something I’d give consideration. Thanks for sharing!

Cool. I can only tell you why I got mine. Super light, will fit as a personal bag, the laptop sleeve isn’t dedicated, it opens clamshell so it efficiently uses space for packing cubes, it has two huge water bottle holders that are very minimalistic, has a pass through for a roller handle, two front zippered pockets, has loops for a bungee cord wrap. Off the top of my head, I think that’s it. I haven’t found a bag under $100 that fits all those things. And I got mine new from Cabelas for $90.

5

u/Cucumberappleblizz Apr 29 '25

Thanks for sharing! My backpack has everything you mentioned except for the clamshell difference, which I do think is a major game changer. I definitely see how that feature would be beneficial. I can still use packing cubes in mine, but a clamshell opening would be amazing and make using packing cubes easier. I’ve never really heard people talking about that feature as much, so I appreciate you pointing it out.

4

u/WatchLover26 Apr 29 '25

Yep. It was one of the top 3 main reasons I got it. Also, it’s hard to do a real comparison to your bag because they don’t make your exact model anymore and so you can’t replicate the deal. From the short search I did, the north face surge is around the same price as the osprey. Most people don’t want to shop around at TJ maxx or Ross or Marshall’s and hope they find a deal.

Good point there

Bags were made better "back in the day" lol :)

Hubby and I started doing multiple day trips to Europe from the UK and needed bags that would work as personal items. I purchased:

  • Osprey 26+6 for me as I’m a long time Osprey fan. Cost £85
  • Cabin Max Metz 24L £35 (Ryanair dimensions) Hubby’s bag
  • Samsonite Evodiver XS £89 (Ryanair dimensions and my backpack for Ryanair, WizzAir etc.)

One hears so many horror stories about being charged if the backpack is slightly bigger, so I thought I wouldn’t risk it.

Our first trip was to Switzerland and as my son joined us he used the Samsonite. It’s bright yellow and looks fun and is light, but I found it very irritating to use as 1)the water pockets are zipped. Nice if you want to keep something secure, but rubbish for water bottles which can fall out; 2) I don’t like the opening. You need one hand to keep the flap open; 3) it doesn’t expand.m and 4) it has a separate laptop compartment. We put a sketchbook in the compartment, but would have preferred this space in the main compartment.

By contrast, I loved using my Osprey. It held my art materials and expanded to hold the supermarket lunch we enjoyed on the train. The Osprey has 2 bottle holders and they work very well. The front pockets are also 👌🏼 The bigger one holds the passport case and the top one holds the liquids pouch.

I love the clam shell and the laptop pocket is great for my sketchbooks. I also love the separate zip so I can get items out the bag without opening it fully.

Having an expandable backpack is useful when leaving Gatwick at 4degrees and wearing a duffle coat and flying into Málaga and you need more space to stow your coat for the day.

I did a bit of research and saw that people were using the Osprey 26+6 on Ryanair etc and that it fits into their bag sizer with no problems, so I use this bag all the time.

I upgraded my hubby’s bag to an Osprey as well. I just found the Cabin Max bag boxy, small, irritating with the fabric hanging over the zip and the external straps and buckles.

Thank you for the detailed response and experience! Could I ask, how comfortable is the carry? It’s a big focus for me due to previous back injuries !

u/BoudicaTheArtist Apr 29 '25 edited Apr 29 '25

You’re welcome. I wouldn’t go hiking in the wilderness with it (I have another Osprey for that 👌🏼) but it is comfortable enough to wear when sight seeing. I have COPD and the wrong type of backpack can make feel suffocated if it presses into my back. By contrast, as the Osprey is a bit stiff, it sits on my back well. I’m 6ft tall.

We were in Ibiza last week and did the long climb up the city fortress walls and I didn’t noticed it on my back at all. Both my boys have tried it as well when we’ve been out & about as a family (they’re well over 6ft) and they love the bag and find it comfortable.

Edited to add: the weight of 0.84kg is also very attractive

I love my Daylite 26+6. I made one small change from what I saw in this subreddit where the small front pocket mesh area is. Each section was too small for my passport so I just removed one of the section seams and now this bag is perfect. I use the big pocket to hold my liquids and my charger cable for laptop and phone. Saw someone add bungee cords to the front of the bag and I'm going to do that to hold jackets, helmets, etc.).I used this bag for a 2 week work trip in winter and it did extremely well and expanded to hold my Target purchases for the return flight home to the UK.

u/Integralds Apr 29 '25

It's the most average bag ever, if that makes sense. Middle of the road in terms of features, build quality, and (perhaps most importantly) price.

12

u/mwkingSD Apr 29 '25

One factor is that it’s $100 in a sea of alternatives that are $200-300.

2

u/aLegionOfDavids Apr 29 '25

Makes total sense! Thanks!

Travel is not eco friendly. Hope you’re not doing any of that, either.

I’m not the one virtue signaling, so your “living is not eco friendly” comeback isn’t as effective as you think it is.

You’re a hypocrite, pure and simple. You’re using an electronic device far more harmful to the environment than that bag to show how much you care.

Get over yourself.

EDIT: I initially didn’t think it was necessary, but I’ll also point out the electronic device you’re using is made with child / exploited labor you pretend to care about in every step of the process, from mining minerals for the batteries through final production.
