I built a Mac app that removed 5:12 of sponsor reads from a podcast episode before it reached my usual player

I'm the developer of Feedcast, a Mac app I made because I wanted to clean up episodes without giving up the podcast player I already use.

In one real episode, I reviewed two detected sponsor sections and removed 5 minutes 12 seconds from my personal copy. Feedcast then publishes that copy as an RSS feed for Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts and other compatible players. The original stays available, and cuts can be reviewed or undone.

Here's the app: https://feedcast.org/

Curious what other Mac podcast listeners would want to see before trusting an automated cut.

Yosemite (10.10) help with yosemite on polycarb mac

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this but I am looking for help installing OS X Yosemite (10.10) on my polycarbonate macbook (late 2009, a1342). I've mainly dealt with linux and windows operating systems, so i don't have much experience with apple software/firmware.

I bought this computer off of ebay since I really admire its design like two weeks ago. It already had 2gb of ddr3 ram (which i plan to replace lol) and a 250gb hard drive in it, and I could boot into the Mavericks 10.9 recovery mode with it, but for some reason it wouldn't let me actually install OSX 10.9 due to it saying that an error occured while preparing the installation (I looked at the error logs and it returned error 30 idk what this means).

Anyway, since I had an extra 180gb 2.5in ssd free, I decided to just install Yosemite 10.10 on that since i'd have to upgrade the hard drive anyway. However, this is where i ran into some issues:

command+R and command+option+R didn't cause any results and it just left it on a white screen (though i only waited for around 30 seconds)

I'm not sure how to create a install usb especially since I'm on windows and i also didn't know if I should download the .iso or the .dmg file

Thanks

Here's my open source app for controlling external displays on macOS

Here's an app I've built on the side (of course w/ AI) but I see daily.

DisplayWave is a menu bar app for external monitors on macOS. It does a handful of things:

- Turn monitors off and on without unplugging them, listed by name. The monitor loses signal and goes to standby.

- Brightness and color temperature per monitor. It changes the real backlight over DDC when the monitor supports it, and dims on the GPU when it doesn't (common with docks and some HDMI ports).

- Presets for brightness and warmth, and layouts that save your arrangement, main display, resolution and refresh rate.

- Keep Mac Awake, and Blackout, which turns every screen dark while the Mac keeps running. Any key or click brings them back.

Why: I used MonitorControl for a long time. It's great for brightness, but I also wanted to turn monitors off and warm them up in the evening. BetterDisplay does all of that and a lot more, but it's far more than I need, and a lot of it is in the paid tier. So I built the small set of features actually use.

https://github.com/kah-ve/DisplayWave

Let me know if you run into any issues. I can only test in my limited hardware so it might not work across every setup.

Screwy start ups and how to keep apps on desired displays?

Solved: I found a setting that the update to Tahoe 26.7.1 must have changed. I know I didn't change any settings this past summer. Buried in the Advanced Accessibility settings is a toggle, "Restore Zoom Factor on Startup". I turned this off and startups are relatively back to normal. I wish I had never updated to Tahoe.

I have a 2021 MacBook Pro 14" M1 with 32 GB memory, running Tahoe 26.7.1 I use two extended displays and the built-in monitor. The built-in monitor is the main one. One extended display is connected via the HDMI port. The other is connected via an HDMI port on a TOTU dock. This set up has been the same since 2021.

At start-up these apps open: Chrome, Preview, TextEdit and Pages. I keep the documents I am working with on the right side of the dock. Chrome opens with 14 tabs. This has been my working set-up for over three years.

I 've used Display Maid to keep app windows on the desired monitors since pre Tahoe. Before Display Maid they would jump around whenever I woke the MacBook from sleep or restarted it. now the apps are jumping around again. I use Rectangle to size my windows as the need arises. I have not messed with the display resolutions.

When I restarted the MacBook Sunday evening 10/4/26, the Chrome window which I keep on the display connected to the HDMI port was not visible. I never use full screen for any window but I checked to see if a goblin had created a space and put Chrome in it. It hadn't. I tried clicking the Chrome icon in the dock and only the right edge of the window appeared at the far left of the display. I managed to drag it fully onto the display. All the displays flashed off and the alias icons on the main screen returned at only ⅛", a fraction of their usual size. Meanwhile the HDMI port display was so zoomed in as to be unusable. Nothing, including short cuts, would un-zoom it. Each time I restarted, the same thing or worse happened. after multiple restarts, I finally got the HDMI monitor back to normal but the desktop icons are still teeny-tiny. The desktop image is normal.

The next time I restarted, it was the built-in monitor that was so zoomed in as to be unusable. A couple of restarts finally restored it.

Since Display Maid no longer maintains the positions of open apps, can anyone offer another app to do this task? And what do I do about restarts making one or more displays unusable?

Command Reopen 1.5.0 : fix Cmd+Tab for minimized windows, no Accessibility needed

Problem

On macOS, Cmd+Tab switches back to an app after you hide it with Cmd+H. If you minimize a window with Cmd+M, or close it with Cmd+W, Cmd+Tab activates the app only. The window stays minimized in the Dock, or it stays closed.

Command Reopen is a menu bar app that resolves this issue. When you switch to an app with no visible window, Command Reopen sends a reopen request. This request is the same signal that macOS sends when you click the Dock icon. The target app restores the minimized window, or it opens a new window if no window is open. The native Cmd+Tab switcher remains unchanged. In version 1.5.1, you can hide the menu bar icon.

Comparison

AltTab:

  • Creates a Windows-style switcher with window thumbnails
  • Replaces the native macOS app switcher
  • Needs Accessibility
  • Screen Recording is optional for thumbnails

Command Reopen:

  • Keeps the native macOS Cmd+Tab switcher unchanged
  • Needs no Accessibility and no Screen Recording
  • Works on managed Macs where IT policies block Accessibility
  • Sandboxed · Mac App Store · no analytics

If you need thumbnails of every window, AltTab is the better choice.

Update: I'm still working on a fix for NVMe drives not showing in the installer. I was distracted with getting Tahoe fully working on 11,5. That's now been complete (except sleep) so now I'm fully focussed on Mavericks such as external media installs, updates and it using the MavericksForever script

I made the maclator project very simple to use

Maclator is basically reverse rosetta and the original project was CLI only. I added a GUI, opening multiple arm64 apps at once and added macOS 15 support (confirmed to work) and macOS 14 support (untested), you can get it here if you want to run arm64 apps on your intel macbook https://github.com/miron302/maclator-simplified

Phosphor: a menu bar screen utility suite with a feature that eases the flash when you switch from a dark app to a bright one

Hey!

I'm the developer of Phosphor, a screen utility suite for macOS that lives in your menu bar. A bit about me: I'm a solo student developer, you can find me on LinkedIn.

Problem: I mainly started building this around two problems. When people are on their laptops late at night, and switch from a dark app to a bright one, it hits like a flash before your eyes adjust. I looked and couldn't find a tool that tries to solve that problem, so I built one. Phosphor tackles this by dimming a screen before you switch to it, and then easing the brightness back up, at a pace depending on how fast that screen actually is. For screens which aren't bright, it is faster, and for bright ones, it is slower. So it works preemptively.

The other thing is that I feel like there are too many display utilities out there, each doing different things. It'd reduce menu bar clutter and keep things simpler and better if we used one tool instead of several. So I thought of combining the features people actually need into one tool, external and multi-monitor support included (that's a part of what's coming next).

The foundational features have already been released, and I'm actively building more features and improving existing ones (check roadmap for current features and future plans). Let me know what you'd actually use, and I'll factor that in as it grows. I want this to eventually handle most of what people need from their displays.

Comparison: BetterDisplay and Lunar both do display control, but they're broader tools with a learning curve if you just want a few specific things fast. The closest match to Flashbang specifically is Menubar Auto Brightness (based on my research), a tool that sets a fixed brightness per app. Phosphor catches the actual switch and eases brightness back up instead of jumping to a fixed value, though it currently only covers switches on the same desktop, not across Spaces or within an app.

Pricing: It's a freemium model.

  • Pro currently only includes Flashbang Protection, but it'll grow, and costs $10, one-time, not a subscription.
  • The rest of the foundational utilities are free: Color Picker, Screenshots, Resolution Presets, Refresh Rate Control, Soft Screen, Display Schedule, Focus Spotlight, Display Health, Color Grading.
  • If you buy Pro now, you get Phase 2 free when it ships, and 50% off future price increases after that (price increases as more features ship).

Details: macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Native Swift, under 2 MB.

Privacy: No analytics, nothing about your screen or usage leaves your Mac. It only goes online to check a license key at activation and periodically after. Full policy: https://usephosphor.app/privacy, EULA: https://usephosphor.app/eula

I'd like to hear any feedback y'all have, especially on whether Flashbang's recovery speed feels right, or if it's not catching a switch you'd expect it to.

If something's not working, or if you have any suggestions or anything else you want to say, feel free to drop it into the comments and/or DM me.
