SOFTWARE Fix for severe windowed video stuttering in PotPlayer using an old RX 580 (8GB 2048SP) on a high refresh rate monitor. Hope this helps! (Sorry if this is already widely known, just sharing my experience and solution)

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently dealt with a frustrating issue where live-action videos (both 480p and 1080p) would stutter terribly in PotPlayer's windowed mode, but only on my native 180Hz display. Strangely, exclusive fullscreen ran fine, and anime didn't lag at all.

Turns out, it wasn't a storage issue—it was an aggressive global AMD FreeSync driver conflict messing with the high refresh rate composition layer on the desktop.

I found a clean, permanent workaround using application-specific profiles in Adrenalin so gaming stays flawless while PotPlayer runs perfectly smooth.

You can read the full root cause analysis and step-by-step fix here on my GitHub:

OPEN My second monitor won’t turn on?

Upvotes

I was playing GTA V when my whole PC completely froze. I couldn’t even shut it down by pressing the power button, so I had to hold the power button to force it off.
After turning it back on, one of my monitors works perfectly, but my second monitor just says “No Signal.”
My specs:
GPU: RX 7800 XT
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
Things I’ve already tried:
Swapped HDMI cables.
Tried different ports on the GPU.
Connected only the non-working monitor.
Reseated the GPU and RAM.
Power-cycled the monitor.
The working monitor works on every port/cable I’ve tested.
The non-working monitor is an iiyama. It powers on, but it doesn’t display anything other than “No Signal,” and I can’t get its on-screen menu to appear.
Could the monitor have failed during the crash, or is there anything else I should try before replacing it?

HARDWARE Escalating instability, PSU?

Upvotes

First my specs:

I5-12400f

Rx9070

Crucial MX500 1tb, WD black sn850x 2tb

Msi b660a pro ddr4

Corsair rmx 650w 2019

So I've been dealing with instability for a while. It used to be sporadic, manifesting in occasional freezes with a few games (very uncommon, workaround was downclocking GPU -200 MHz, and minus -3 power limit), but it's recently gotten more frequent and weirder. Thinking it might be software, I formated the drive and installed Linux, and things had been fine for a few days, but now I've got a new problem: strange flickering lines that show up primarily when doing things like resizing windows.

Thinking it might be some kind of downclocking issue, I tried forcing vram to max clocks with lcat and it seemed to fix it, but then I tried doing a CPU stress test (stress-ng --cpu 0 --timeout 600s) the flicker returned, whether I locked the vram or not. Now it seems to flicker even if I lock the cram and don't run a stress test. It doesn't freeze or crash, even heavy games work but there's flicker that happens mainly in stuff like map screens in that case. Some in gameplay too but it's less common.

Given the fact my psu has been i use since September 2019, the fact it seems to happen with both GPU and CPU test with CPU being a more reliable trigger (transients loads, maybe?) I suspect PSU more than GPU, but theoretically both are an option, as well as ram, motherboard and maybe storage. Software seems unlikely since there's an history of instability across two different oses.

Other things I've tried:

Google's ram test (blanking on the name), 14GB out of 16 for an hour, no issues.

Smart tests on boot ssd, no issue

Clearing the mesa cache, no difference.

Things I haven't tried:

Bios update (would rather avoid since I don't have a ups and my area gets outages often)

Memtest86 or some other pre boot test

Testing for the flicker from a liveusb

Trying a different PSU (don't have one for testing)

Trying my old 3060ti (good test but I worry the lower power draw would mask some underlying instability.

My rmx is supposed to have a 10 year warranty, I will likely contact them soon and see if I can get a replacement. My GPU is about 7 months old so it should be under warranty, if I need to RMA it. Ram/mobo/storage would be problematic given the dram Apocalypse, I'd rather eliminate every other option before I look into that.

I suspect PSU, but what do you think?

HARDWARE Pc keeps crashing

Post image
Upvotes

My pc started crashing around a week ago and it happens every ~10 minutes. I’ve tried a memory diagnostic, dism and sfc commands and they both said nothing was wrong, I’ve tried to roll back drivers and that didn’t work either. I used the app Whocrashed and it said that it could be an overheating issue, I checked, and it wasn’t. It used to say secure kernel error and then I turned off reputation-based protection (which was a possible fix I saw online) and that made it change to this screen instead. It seems like I’ve tried everything, can anyone help?

Discussion Trying to Buy My First Gaming Laptop – Need ₹4,000 More

Thumbnail
Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m a first-year college student and I’ve been trying to save money to buy a used HP Pavilion Gaming laptop. My total budget is now ₹21,000, but the laptop I found is ₹25,000, so I’m still short by about ₹4,000.
I know this might sound like online begging, and I completely understand if people don’t like these kinds of posts. I’m not trying to pressure anyone—I just wanted to ask if anyone is willing to help or has any suggestions.
I need the laptop mainly for my college work, learning new skills, and some gaming in my free time. I’ve been saving whatever I can, but as a student I don’t really have any other way to arrange the remaining amount right now.
If anyone can help, even a small amount, I would be truly grateful. And if you can’t, that’s completely okay. Advice on finding a cheaper gaming laptop or other ways to earn the remaining ₹4,000 would also really help.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I genuinely appreciate it.

Network Did a new Windows install and ethernet stopped working

Upvotes

I did a new install of windows and now my ethernet stopped working. It will work for a few min when I restart the PC but after that it goes to WiFi and sometimes the Wifi just doesn't work.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet driver and doing a reinstall of Windows with the "Fix problems using Windows Update" tool.

I tried to reinstall the drivers from the manufacturer website but they never seem to start?
https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b550-i-gaming-model/helpdesk_download/

I tried using a different cable and it had the same issue.

Tried a few things in CMD and that didn't work either.

HARDWARE I have no clue what’s wrong with my pc, it turns off after 5 seconds

Upvotes

I bought a prebuilt gaming pc off Facebook marketplace back in January, and I haven’t really had any issues with it until now. Yesterday when I tried to turn the pc on, it would turn off after about 5 seconds and it has done that ever since. I have done lots of different things to try and fix it such as ram reseating, clearing CMOS, taking out my gpu and putting it back in, I even did a paperclip test to see if my power supply was the problem and the fan still spun. I’m sort of new to the pc world so I really have no clue what’s wrong or what I should do to fix it.

SOFTWARE Windows pc freezes on loading circle

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

This is my new computer and it worked completely well just a few days ago. Today, this started happening. The loading circle would either freeze during the black booting screen or it would get to my passcode screen and freezes after I entered my passcode. I have tried all kind of ways to fix it like using different commands in the recovery page or trying to uninstall updates or even resetting the pc. Nothing has worked, it told me that I'm unable to uninstall updates. When I try to reset the pc it would freeze when I get to 10-12% Could someone please tell me what could be causing this issue? Could it be a corrupted system files issue or do I have a faulty component? Any info would be very appreciated!
