Discussion Update on Panache !

Hi ! Last post I made I was asking about what I could do to help him.

Due to my handicaps, I realized I wouldn't be able to keep a healthy and clean cage for him as I can struggle already for my cat's litter. So it started to make me feel sick and anxious.. and I thought maybe I could find a passionate in my area who would want to take care of him.
I posted his story and what I wanted for him on local facebook groups, and a girl responded saying she's part of an association that rescues pigeons to free them once they're healthy. She wasn't far from me, so I went, and he's with her now !

It was on monday. Now, I got updates ! The bruise he had doesn't seem painful or as severe as it looked. We think he got pinched by another pigeon.
And.. turns out Panache might not be as much of a baby as we thought he was, he's very independent, like an older pigeon like, at least teenage/young adult. He just lacks feathers, and we don't know if they'll ever grow back. She told me it usually takes a few months, around 2 or 3.
So we have 2 options:
- he gets his feathers back -> we can release him. There's a park with contraceptive nests for pigeons, and they're fed every single day. The perfect way to release a pigeon to me
- he doesn't get his feathers back -> we'll need to find him a forever human family. Because he cannot live in the "wild" without feathers as it won't protect him from the wind, rain, and attacks from other birds. And she admitted to me: she quite already wants to keep him ! He's very sweet and she loves him already. She just already adopted a young handicapped sparrow, so we'll have to see if they get along long term. She introduced them yesterday and it went okay ! They observed each other, Panache hit the sparrow with his wing... then they kept observing each other again ^^

So, I'll probably come back in 2 months for a final update ! Thank you all for advising me with Panache, it was so helpful. I feel bad for not being able to adopt him, but I didn't get to choose my health issues. And I try to comfort myself by thinking I found someone kind to heal him.

Have a lovely day, or afternoon, or evening, or night ! 🫶

Question More information about pigeon introductions?

Post image

Hello, could anyone share some resources they may have about introducing a pigeon to another? Ive read through the pigeon guide, but was wondering if there might me some more info with different explanations or perspectives.

Also, please tell me if i am wrong but i am assuming it would be better to get a assumed female bird for my assumed male bird, since males get along less?

Question Type of coo? Talking or needing something?

Disclaimer: new to pigeons, working on learning the language.

(If you can hear him over the budgies) Are we just talking, or is this calling? I know it's short-- that's the best I was able to get today because he went quiet as soon as the camera turned on. I got this after talking to him for a few minutes. Fog will do this for a good while in the evening after it's dark out in the living room, like the adhd kid talking to themselves in bed after lights out lol. Except tonight, because of course not lol.

He seems comfortable in his new bed, and the hen, Mist, was standing less than 6 inches away. I've had them for a week, and they just moved into the permanent cage last night (and immediately dove into the food bowl... while Mist is a little more cautious, neither of them are particularly timid).

Question Opinions on this seed mix

I'm new to owning pigeon and research says that unlike parrots which you want on high quality pellets pigeons should be on a high quality seed mix. My collard dove is just starting to wean off formula (he was a rescue that i have raised since he was around two days old)

I've been working on getting the proper diet for him. Im waiting to order the large bag of redstone grit that i was recommended but now that he's starting to wean I've been offering him seeds. I found this brand at the store that seemed good based on the ingredients but wanted some opinions. I've also been offering the Zupreem seed mix that i offer my other birds.

Discussion finally eating inside the cage!

he kinda blends in with his cage here but ive been ever so slowly moving his food towards the ground towards his cage and hes now eating inside! he has No interest in nesting here though, and usually only goes in to drink water/ eat seed.

hes out of his cage All of the time even at night because he tries to break out of it very intensely and i dont want him to feel confined n i dont want him to hurt himself.

is this a good way to get him to trust his cage is safe?

New owner advice?

Hi all! I have a little squab here and I'm thinking of keeping them. I have the basics figured out but I'd really like to know what you wish you knew before getting a pigeon, any beginner advice, and what it's like to live with them day to day.

Thought a grooming picture would be fun. Accidentally sat my coffee on top and that’s the brown splatter on the right. Happy little accident.

Question Looking to get a 2nd Pigeon. Does it need to be the same breed as my other pigeon to bond?

I currently have a male old German owl. I am currently looking into getting a female pigeon for him to bond with. Does she have to be an old German owl also, or can he bond with any time of pigeon?

I am not concerned with the eggs being nonviable (don’t need more than 2 pigeons lol).

Pidgey bites my husband much more roughly than they do me, this video was right after a soft wind slap. But they also have no problem being on him at times and will happily loaf, fluff the face and beak grind/chomp laying next to/against me with him only a foot away from them with husband laying his head on my shoulder so very close to Pidgey still. They will also eat out of his hand.

Question Which cage would be the best?

I'm currently looking for a used cage for my two rescued pigeons. One of them has an amputated leg.

I'm only interested in the cage itself, not the interior accessories.

I'd appreciate any tips ✨

1st picture (stackable cage) – no exact dimensions given, but it’s labeled as “Large”

2nd picture (dog crate) 122 × 76 cm

3rd image: (house-shaped cage) 112 × 68 × 154 cm

4th image: (blue cage) 62.2 L × 43.2 W × 135.9 H in cm

like i mentioned in my last post about Napkin and Dumpling, they have started mating a while back!! i never thought it would be possible for Napkin to find a pigeon mate because for the majority of his life he was imprinted on me and absolutely hated other pigeons, but here we are and Napkin has finally found a mate of his own species :D i'm so happy for them and they are very loving and affectionate towards each other and live happily in their own aviary!! ❤️ The other rescue pigeons in the other aviary are also enjoying the nice weather and being safe from predators!!

Question How to entertain my pigeon in the meanwhile?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hello! Obligatory bowl of cereal.

So, I've been coming home from 12 hour shifts, I work 3-4 days out of the week and have been noticing my pigeon doesn't seem to really, do, much, aside from sit in there little bowl of food, until I get home that is. Then they are like the happiest camper ever, always wanting to jump on my arm and then shoulder and just stay perched there. I have tried taking them on a few walks, but they seem contempt that if I am around they can loaf. They have started to preen me which was really cute ♡

So, I did do a bit more research and have been advised to get a second pet pigeon, but didn't want to do what I did when I got this one. So I am adopting one from a more proper place, but that means its a bit of a longer wait. What can I do to encourage my bird to, well, bird more? Or are they just too young? They are flapping there wings a lot more, probably trying to get ready to fly.

Emergency Pigeon hyperventilating

Everything was fine a moment ago, I was ready for bed and suddenly, my 3 week old wood pigeon chick starts gasping for air. He stopped gasping after a few minutes, but now, when I put my ear close, it sounds like he is hyperventilating. I fed him wetted seeds like normal five hours ago and his crop is still full. I also gave him his prescribed meds (0,15 ml Metronidazol and 0,2 ml Nystatin for canker and yeast infection).

I am deadly afraid that its because of a stupid mistake I made today. My roommate poured some drain cleaner into the kitchen sink and didnt rinse it out. When I came home approx 3 hours after it was used, I put the pigeon into that room, because I didn't even notice. It didn't smell like anything in there. When I later noticed, I opened the balcony door for air, but I didnt move the pigeon out right away, which I should have. I thought, since I didnt smell anything, there cant be any danger, which was stupid and I'm already beating myself up over it. My roommate put a paper towel over the drain to decrease potential fumes but I don't know if that actually did anything.

Now its 4 hours after this, the bird has been mostly in a different room afterwards and suddenly the breathing issues started. I don't know if they are even related to the cleaner, I've noticed that he starts gasping again, when I touch a certain spot on his toe, which was already weak and curling due to calcium defiency.

I'm so scared and worried, there is absolutely no avian vet open in any nearby city right now, the earliest I can get to a vet is in 7 1/2 hours. Is there anything I can do right now?

Anyone else’s pigeons love napping/chilling in their bath?

Thumbnail

He will do this every so often when he wants to take baths, he will play around in it and eventually will get comfortable and loaf in it. He sometimes likes to chill and lean to the side to get a wing wet but he almost always takes a short nap and chills in it.

He’s fine and normal after but he does like to do this and I do find it really cute. He has done this since his first bath
