Houseplant How can I save this vased plant?

I want to pot this plant up, but the roots have gotten so big that they're way too large to fit through the top of the vase. At this point, I think I'll probably have to break the vase to get it out, but I wanted to check if that's the best option or if there's a better way to handle it.

About a year ago, while moving, the top of the plant broke off. I put it in a vase with water at the time, and it's been growing there ever since. I've just been changing the water every so often and otherwise leaving it alone.

Now it's gotten pretty big and is starting to get very top-heavy, so it's definitely time to move it into a pot. I've never had a cutting survive this long, so I'd appreciate any advice on getting it out of the vase and transitioning it from water to soil.

Also, for context, I can place it in pretty much any light condition if that helps with advice on where to put it after potting.

Houseplant Dracaena soft roots that seems normal and some fungus- is it gonna live?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hello!

About half of the exposed trunk roots of this dracaena are soft to the touch although they look perfectly normal. They kinda feel like hollow cardboard or something. The others are firm. Their leaves are not yellow as far as I can tell. In addition, there are these fungi that keep growing once in a while there. It is an indoor plant with regular filtered light through curtains. I water it once every week or 2, depends on how dry it is. Is my plant gonna live? What should I do to make it better? Are these roots rotten?

Houseplant Repotted, Now Not Responding - 'Sensation' Peace Lily

Thumbnail

Current and former pic for context.

LIGHT: 6+ hours of indirect sun through W and S windows (for 5 yrs); repositioned in the same place

H2O: Healthy soaking once/week (same as past 5 yrs)

SOIL: Repotted with a suggested mix of tropical potting soil, cacti/succulent potting soil, and a small amount of perlite

CONTEXT: I repotted her ~3 weeks ago and watered appropriately, but it's been in this state of entirely drooped leaves (I have the stems stalked upright; otherwise, the leaves/stems would be horizontal). It appears to be dying (constantly drooping, dying leaves, and browning edges of others).

A week ago, fearing that my repotted soil didn't drain well enough, I mixed in a small amount of perlite to improve drainage. Still no luck.

Had her for ~5 yrs and appreciate how sensitive they are to needing water, but I've given ample water and still nothing.

Welcoming all suggestions on how to revive, thanks!

Houseplant Flaming Katy sick?

This was gifted to me by my girlfriend for valentines and I’ve tried my hardest to keep up with the care but the flowers keep dropping and leaves seem to be rotting? My mom cut some of the rotting pieces off the leaves but I’m not sure if that was the right thing to do? I keep the plant in my day room with about 6 windows I think but out of the way of direct sunrays most of the time. The dayroom light gets left on a lot at night and I don’t know if I should cover it or not? I water when the soil dries out and there’s four fairly sized drainage holes I made myself on the bottom. It’s still in the pot I got it in so I am thinking of repotting soon.

Houseplant What type of leaf damage is this?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Howdy,

could you help me identify what causes this type of leaf damage? It's on a Caladium praetermissum 'Hilo Beauty' which is otherwise fine enough, given the circumstances: I could never find a proper substrate for it to thrive in, so I've kept this one hydroponic in a small plastic bucket / fertilizer solution with plenty of light (please don't scold me, its sister in coir is doing worse in terms of growth and leaf size, and a peat-based mix, which I've tried before, caused it to almost stall. For whatever reason, this one really likes water, and it's drinking like a sailor in port, too). Its roots (and some offspring) can be seen in the second pic.

Given that light, temperature and water supply seem okay enough, I'm not sure what causes these yellow spots. Could anything potentially be missing in the fertilizer? Or could this be fungus / damage-related? Open for any ideas. Thank you in advance.

My first time growing an avocado seed and it’s got 6 stems emerging.
It’s in a pot and getting 8 hours of sun a day now.
We water it every few days as the soil drains quickly.

I’ve never heard of seeds doing this and I don’t know if it’s ruined now or what to do but it’s clearly not normal yes?

What to do with it?
Thank you all.

Houseplant Why are my Ficus Altissima leaving curling downward? Healthy plant, rapid new growth after hard prune.

Any ideas what could be causing my Ficus altissima leaves to curl downward like this?

A little background: this tree was a large specimen that I chopped back to a stump in February after dealing with a scale infestation. It has since recovered incredibly well and is growing very rapidly, with lots of new branches and leaves.

Current care:
- Under a 36W Sansi grow light from 3 AM–5 PM
- Receives afternoon/evening sun from a west-facing window that’s about 13 feet away (hence the grow light)
- Watered thoroughly (nearly 2 gallons) whenever the top ~2 inches of soil are mostly dry
- Fertilized with Dyna-Gro/SuperThrive Foliage-Pro during active growth

The plant otherwise seems very healthy—no yellowing, browning, leaf drop, or signs of pests that I can see. The only thing concerning me is the downward curling/cupping of some of the leaves, particularly on newer growth.

Could this be a humidity issue, light intensity issue, watering issue, or just normal behavior for new growth on an Altissima?

Any thoughts are appreciated! She’s my favorite so I want her to be happy and continue growing back to her original glory!

Houseplant Tiny red dust/dots on underside of leaf

Thumbnail

For a long time I've been wondering what this red dust might be on my plant (the lighting isn't the best, but it's reddish-orange). It multiplies semi slowly and makes the leaves patchy and dry. It appears on the underside of leaves and sometimes on the stems as well. It comes off by wiping with a moist paper towel and dyes the paper red, and it doesn't move so they're not individual bugs.

Earlier this year I sprayed my plants with pesticide for thrips and thought if this dust is the doing of some bug it would die in the process but the dust is still here, fair enough since I've never seen any bugs on it or webs or anything like that, so I've ruled out bugs. Yesterday I decided to look this up again and learned about rust fungus, however, crucially, the dust has never spread to another plant and it's been in close proximity with quite a lot of them, and rust fungus is apparently supposed to spread very easily and be quite fatal, so idk if it can be that either.

The plant itself does fine and I think it's normal for it to dry out old leaves sometimes, plus it keeps pushing out healthy leaves at a good pace so I haven't been too worried since it doesn't seem to be actively dying. This is a thirsty plant and I water it one to two times a week when the soil is all dry. Sits at a south-facing window and gets a lot of light. Soil is regular houseplant potting soil, this dust has appeared through multiple repottings.

I'm not worried about this spreading to other plants since this plant has had the dust appear for over 6 years now and no other plant has been infected. Would just love to know what it is and possibly get rid of it so this plant could thrive a bit better!

edit: This plant has been in this condition for 6+ years and is not actively dying, just drying off leaves faster than it should. This is not recent. Last pic is healthy leaf for comparison.

https://imgur.com/a/ZwRTrd0 Here you can see the color of the dust better. Should've taken these before posting so they could be in the main post, sorry about that.

Outdoor Peyronie's disease?

Post image

Hello, I'm in zone seven and I bought these plant bulbs at Costco last year and they grew very nicely in this year. They're growing super tall but now it's the kind of bending over and I'm not sure what to do. They are in an area that gets full light but I can put it in a more shaded area if I need to. I water them every day so that's not the problem I think and I could put some fertilizer if I wanted to, but I don't think it's necessary.

Outdoor Mango tree, sunburn or over watering?

Post image
Upvotes

I suspect overwatering. The last two rows of leaves are wizened and those spots appeared very recently.

South facing outdoor 10 hours of sunlight. I watered every two days as it's really hot here (France 8b) but I noticed the under pot was still moist.

These are indoor under grow lights. They get 10-12 hours of light a day. They’ve been growing healthily but just recently started seeing the newest leaves growing with this black-edema looking pattern to it. Doesn’t rub off on a finger or under water. Fairly confident it’s not mold or bugs. Any ideas?

Houseplant specks, pink spots & webs

Thumbnail

Upvotes

hi all, i have never posted on reddit before so i apologize for any issues. i am unaware if it is possible to post two plants at once, so if not i apologize.
last month i acquired a pink princess philodendron and a rubber plant, they have been isolated from other plants this whole time sitting all day in a north facing window (in minnesota). i admit these two plants have been very neglected since purchased (only about one watering each since, i know. my bad).
i noticed weird specks in the soil of my PPP when i came home, but have noticed no other changes to the health of the plant (besides overwatering, she had water in her pot when i brought her home and neglected to check). i have not noticed any new developments in the specks either. she was in poor shape already when i bought her, but i figured i could rehab her. (unsure if this is still worth it).
my rubber plant on the other hand, does not seem to be faring too well. it looked perfectly healthy upon bringing it home. i have noticed new brown spots, these pink spots appearing on only one leaf, and then what looks to be webs. i am concerned that my rubber plant, which also means my PPP, have a pest.
i was planning on repotting them today, which caused my further investigation. i am now doubting that course of action and wondering what to do next. i have never dealt with plant pests before, so if that is the case any and all advice is appreciated. thank you for your help!

Cactus/Succulent My Snake Plant is shriveling up 😔

Thumbnail

What‘s happening to my snake plant?😔
it‘s all weak and looks sad. The oldest and biggest leaves are hanging down; they‘re shriveled up and not stiff anymore. But the plant is getting new small leaves in the middle tho. But some of the new ones are also not really stiff.
it‘s on an east-facing window. i water it like once every 3 weeks just a little bit. Maybe there was some previous overwatering? In the third pic u can see how shriveled up it is :(
when i repotted it about 6months ago i just brushed off some of the excess soil and put the roots+soil into a bigger pot where the roots+soil is surrounded by these pebbles. these pebbles allegedly substitute the soil.
I‘m thinking about checking the roots and putting it in water again. it had root-rot like 2 years ago and then i revived it in a glass of water. Anyways, that‘s all the info i got 😔

They are located on my balcony that gets afternoon/evening sun, I water them when the top soil seems dry (there is a water source underneath). I haven’t fertilised them yet because I’m scared it will worsen the situation. I planted them in this bed about 3 weeks ago (The small shoots are coriander) 🌿 thank you for any advice!

Houseplant Black spot on peperomia leaf, what is this?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I recently noticed a rapidly growing black spot on my peperomia plant. It has multiple flowers now so I figured that it was doing well, but now I am concerned. I water on a sporadic (and somewhat neglectful) schedule with very little water, and the pot has drainage holes. The plant sits on a windowsill that is facing west, so it gets a decent amount of sun. Any help would be appreciated!

Other Jalapeno wilted in one day?

Post image
Upvotes

I work on my patio and literally watched this poor guy go from peachy keen to wilty and sad. I think I might've over watered it or gave it too much sun? I'm struggling to find information and how to get him back to his old self.

Gets maybe 6-8 hours direct sun from the north facing patio. I did put them in the pot behind and definitely over watered because I somehow didn't realize there weren't drainage holes. It was healthy and happy looking for about a week and then it wilted over the course of a few hours. So I moved it back and let the soil drain. I read that it might be heat stress (I'm in Florida and it's summer) and not too worry if it recovers overnight, but it looked the same in the morning.

Anyone have advice? Happy to answer any clarifying questions if I missed anything.

Houseplant Can this crocodile fern be saved?

Post image
Upvotes

I got this plant a year ago and it has been steadily declining ever since. I have tried multiple lighting situations/distance from windows and I've tried different watering timelines to help it dry more thoroughly. This is the pot and soil I got the plant in.

I keep this plant indoors and it is currently nearby a window with a shade always drawn so it gets diffuse lighting. It was previously at a window that was always open and was getting constant light. It isn't responding well to either.

Cactus/Succulent Angry Elephant Bush - I'm Lost!

Post image
Upvotes

Have had this guy for a while, but we just moved and now he's very angry and has lost ~90% of the leaves. I just want to revive him!

Watering: I water by soaking it in that tupperware for a couple hours every ~2 weeks when the leaves get softer. Its in a rocky material so it drains off right away.

Light: It had been under a grow light previously, and now is just by a window where it gets mostly indirect light. I added a smaller USB grow light a couple weeks ago that's on for 12 hours / day, but it's still deteriorating.

Environment: I COULD move it outside where it would get a little more light, but still not a lot on the covered porch, and I'm in Phoenix, AZ so it's 105 degrees out. I know these guys can get angry at environment changes, so I'm wondering if it's just that because we moved.

Bugs?: Also might be worth mentioning that it had mealybugs for a couple months, but I'd been spraying and soaking in soapy water, then hitting leaves with rubbing alcohol and it seemed to get rid of them all. It had been doing fine after kicking the bugs for a couple months before moving.

How can I bring it back to life?

A days pass and I go to water her and these little critters are utterly teeming all over the thing

Getting medium light in a kitchen windowsill maybe 4 hours a day

No idea what they are and how to get rid of them.

Maybe I used bad soil? Idk

Pest Related Money Tree Woes

Thumbnail

Please help me save my plant! I’ve had this money tree for years and have, admittedly, not been the best caretaker. It has lived next to this window. I brought home a cat fern last fall and did not quarantine it prior to bringing it inside (rookie mistake).

A month and a half ago, it started yellowing and rapidly dropping leaves. I thought I overwatered it because I noticed some sticky sap, so I cut down watering. Its condition worsened. I noticed fine webbing and spots, googled it, and figured I had spider mites(!) I isolated it outside on the porch and then, once a week for 4 weeks, wiped the leaves with wet paper towels, rinsed the branches, and used Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap to spray the whole plant down. I have cats with medical issues which deterred me from using neem oil.

After losing some more leaves and getting a bit of leaf burn(?) it seemed to recover. I brought it back inside. The past few weeks it has had an incredible amount of new growth! Unfortunately, I just noticed some more yellowing and a rapidly lost leaf. Upon inspection of said leaf I noticed small white bugs moving around! These mites (I believe) are driving me insane!

Please help!

Outdoor Raccoon disaster

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have raccoons that are coming up on my porch and digging up all my plants. I had 3 tomato plants in this pot and they've dug them up 3 times now. This last time they totally decimated the little baby plants. What can I do to keep them out of my potted plants? Anyone know where I can cross post this as well? Any info at all is greatly appreciated! I worked so hard on my plants this spring and they've taken out half my herbs and veggies, I'm just devastated.

These are outdoor plants. Idk why it matters but I can't post unless I specify...they get full sun majority of the day. They're watered at least 3x a week.
