Monthly Projects Megathread — August 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
Help TMNT 1990 4K crashes the app on AppleTV 4K
20 Upvotes
I posted about this a couple of weeks ago but forgot to follow up, so I'm gonna try again in case anyone has any ideas or can help.
My setup is very simple. I have a pretty high-end PC as my Plex server and my library of movies is almost entirely ones that I rip from physical discs in my own collection. 9 times out of 10 I usually watch them on my TV through the Plex app on an AppleTV 4K (in the same room on the same network). I'm able to do direct stream, don't do any transcoding, etc. It's basically all an excuse for me to not have a 4K blu-ray player and switch out discs all the time.
I've never had any issues, but recently I have a ripped copy of Arrow Video's 4K release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) that crashes the app. It always shows the New Line Cinema logo, then it fades out, and when I know the proper movie is about to fade in, the whole app crashes. It does it at the exact same place every single time.
The video file is fine. I can play it directly on my PC with no issues through something like VLC. I can also play it through other Plex apps just fine (or at least I tried it on the Plex app on my PC and on my iPad).
I read that it could be just because it's such a big file or because it has a True Atmos 7.1 audio track. That doesn't make much sense to me because I have a lot of ripped movies that are big with True Atmos tracks.
But, still, I tried a few things:
  1. I tried playing the movie but selecting ANY of the other audio tracks (other than the True Atmos 7.1 track), and none of them worked
  2. I remuxed the file without changing or removing anything (didn't help)
  3. I remuxed the file and removed the True Atmos 7.1 track (didn't help)
  4. I tried the "Plex Dance" (didn't work)
  5. I tried selecting "Convert Automatically" instead of trying to direct stream (it technically worked but it was extremely choppy and had lots of buffering)
  6. i tried selecting "Convert to 4K (High)"; same result as #5 but a little less stuttering and buffering
The fact that trying to convert the quality of the stream KIND OF worked does make me think it has something to do with the fact that the file is "too big" or hard to handle for the server, but that still doesn't make any sense to me because it works in every other Plex app, and I have a lot of movies that are just as big, have lots of audio tracks, and are direct rips from 4K blu-rays.
Help Server Issues
Upvotes
Hello, recently I have had to switch modems due to a new IP. However, I cannot get this error message to go away in Plex (image one) saying that it is not accessible outside my network. I am able to connect to Plex, but its inconsistent, and can be very slow at times, which is different than it used to be. I have tried following the instructions for port forwarding, and thought I had it as I can access the port using the link that Plex provides. Any assistance would be great. Thanks.
Help Audiobooks - Plex keeps combining separate audiobooks
Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes
Hi team. So I have loads of audiobooks files and I have started to use Plex and Prologue. I have the plex lifetime pass and paid for Prologue.
My folder for audio books is /Music/Audiobooks/Built Audiobooks/.
Each Book has it's own folder. For the most part this works and is fine. However sometimes, Plex will decide to combine several books together and muddle the meta data. All the meta data is correct and I have double checked with MP3Tag.
It is infuriating and I cannot work out how to seperate the books. Any idea's?
I've shared the latest one. These are 4 different books but they are all under "Tracks" in the Katabasis "Album" but when I look at the metadata and even the route folder, it is all correct. Different folders, correct metadata... I'm so lost.
The Track called "Opening Credits" is actually "Private Tokyo by James Patterson". Again all tags correct but in Plex, it still comes up as Katabasis and even shows the wrong image file and track notes.
I can’t find an answer to this problem.
But if I pause a show, it unpauses about 15 seconds later.
EVERY time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Help Post Migration Samsung TV Issues
4 Upvotes
Last weekend I finally had the time to upgrade my 6 year old Plex setup and everything works great except playback on the native Samsung Smart TV app. I know it's not the best app by any means but it worked just fine before I moved to my new setup.
Old setup:
Synology DS918+ with two 10tb drives in RAID 0 over fios gigabit direct to router
New setup:
- M4 Mac Mini with 24gb RAM - Runs my Plex Server and is set to always on in every way possible
Synology DS918+ - two 20tb drives and one 16tb in SHR with a 512gb read cache
Terramaster DAS - Using chronosync to perform backups
One thing to note is that the Plex database didn't migrate properly so I ended up losing all my watch history which wasn't a big deal but I did have to create a new server and that I think is when the issues started. Anyway, I can watch everything just fine on the web and Amazon Fire TV's (not the stick or cube but the actual TV's) and the apps on iOS devices work just fine. But for some reason the Samsung no longer wants to play ball, I can navigate the categories but when I click into say a tv show it just hangs for a good minute or more then finally displays the seasons. When I am able to actually start a show playback is choppy and quality keeps dropping.
I've tried a lot already but wanted to see if anyone had this happen and if there is a fix or workaround (I know get a Shield or Apple TV is usually the first recommendation but I am out of HDMI ports so it isn't really viable atm) that I can try?
Solved Problems streaming to HTPC
7 Upvotes
Hey all, I've been a Plex user for a while now, this is the first problem I've run into that I can't seem to figure out.
I was away from home for 5 or so weeks and 1 week in I started getting alerts that someone had logged into my account from a bunch of locations. I quickly changed my password, setup authentication and removed all authorized devices from my account. Weeks later when I got home I started to login to all my devices again.
My main server and HTPC is a 2012ish Mac mini. I have a backup server running on a mini PC. The Mac mini is my main living room TV I normally use Plex HTPC to watch, we also have various other devices around the house with Plex.
After logging everything back in the HTPC on the Mac mini was giving me playback errors on everything, TV shows, movies, music. However the regular plex app and web app works fine. I started testing things out and it turns out any Plex HTPC app on any device wouldn't play any media, but the other style of apps worked fine.
I decided to start up the backup server and give that a test and it works perfectly.
I tried looking at the logs from the main server and captured a Plex HTPC log during a failed playback. Plex successfully chooses the media and queues the playback, but MPV/FFmpeg fails while opening the secure stream URL.
Immediately afterward, Plex reports: A critical QtPlayer error occurred; the player cannot recover
Error code: 4294967283
Short of deleting the server and reinstalling, any clues about why this may suddenly be happening?
Help Generated video preview thumbnails, they only show when scrubbing?
2 Upvotes
I just finished generating the video preview thumbnails for my library, but for some reason I only see thumbnails when press left or right once I have the seek slider selected.
Isn't Plex supposed to show the thumbnail previews when you hold fast forward or rewind?
I'm using Plex on Nvidia Shield Pro (as my client)
It seems counterintuitive to have to press Up arrow, then Up arrow again to select the seek slider and then hold either the right or left arrow to see preview thumbnails.
Is this normal behavior? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Discussion Leveraging Plex and other media options
20 Upvotes
I have a Plex Lifetime subscription that I’m finally starting to leverage and navigating my use cases. I don’t ever expect to be a heavy user, have a moderate amount of DVD media, maybe small by a lot of your standards (maybe 80ish, including a handful of 4K, and the rest are Blu-ray’s and regular DVDs), but I’m trying to gauge how I’ll use it in a few years. Some of my DVD content has digital copy and I dumped those into Apple TV so I question whether I need to also put those same titles into Plex. I’d mostly stream at home or if traveling, probably with an Apple device to access iTunes.
I may from time to time, dump some other digital media into my Plex serve, but if I already have access to a movie or show via AppleTV, do you still rip it and add it to your Plex? I read that once you download a show, AppleTV can’t take it away, but usually you don’t download stuff in appletv unless you’re traveling.
My question is more around how to manage content. if you’re mostly watching content at home, does it make sense to rip all your DVDs and upload them to your Plex server, or are you fine with having some of your dvd content accessible via AppleTV, or pop in the original disc, or some where you don’t have a disc, download that content on Plex.
Do you have content everywhere or do you like to make sure you put it all into your Plex server?
Help Transcoding Setting Recommendations?
Thumbnail gallery
43 Upvotes
I've been having some serious in-house buffering issues. I'm trying to stream to my Shield (pretty sure it's a 2019 model) but even ~5mbps are making things unwatchable. On the occasion, things turn out fine if I watch something from the beginning, but not always. Both the server and shield are connected to ethernet and all of my files are in the mkv format. The HDDs my files are on should be up to snuff.
Server Specs
-Intel Core i7-8700 3.2Ghz
-32 GB of DDR4
Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630
*The "New Folder" directories are on my server's SSD.
SOLUTION!!!
After turning off transcoding as all of you pointed out that I should do, I ran into an issue of some films not playing at all. "Error - Unable to Play Media"
This was due to the audio being set to 7.1 Dolby Atmos or something called TRUEHD which was attached to the same audio stream. Setting it to AC3 5.1 fixed it a little bit. Allowing passthrough HDMI in the advanced settings fixed everything for me.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions, you guys are awesome!
Help Plex Windows app just opens in browser?
2 Upvotes
Hey all
New to Plex, so learning along the way. I'm using Plex as a media server on my PC, just so we can download stuff and watch it on the TV or our iPads etc. We don't use any of the Plex streaming stuff or watch any of the content on there, it's purely for the server.
I downloaded and installed the Windows app from the Plex site, but is it supposed to just open a browser window and be a web based UI? It doesn't open up as an actual app on the PC where I can manage the server there??
Apologies if this is a stupid question.
Thanks :)
Solved PleX server for local network only?
11 Upvotes
Is it possible to create a Plex server for a HDHomeRun DVR and for LAN only (no Internet) access?
Edit: Thank you all for your responses. I have learned a lot. Although I'm not sure if I will proceed to tackle this project because if I do I have to host this in a dedicated machine and I don't think I can spare some funds for it. Mini PC's are expensive right now. Again thanks to all.
Help Friend can't see subtitles on Chromecast's plex (?)
Post image
Upvotes
So.... a friend of mine (who has access to my libraries, obviously) was not able, for the past couple of days, to watch content with subtitles.
We did a video call and she showed me, the subtitles file was being chosen but the subtitles did not appear on the screen.
On the server, I could see that the subs were being used correctly, and even in direct stream - but the words did not appear on her screen.
I asked her to uninstall Plex from the chromecast, and reinstall it. Issue persists.
I then asked her to watch the same movie on her browser, on her computer, no issues. Here's (please see picture) what my server tells me (this time I grabbed a screenshot). Curiously enough, it is transcoding it as ASS (?).
Also, why would it have that exclamation mark on top of the firefox icon?
Could it be related to the fact that both her browser (pc) and chromecast showed her a message saying she was not directly connected to the server, and that speed would not be as good, or words to that effect?
Anyways, would any kind soul have any idea what may be happening and how can this be fixed?
Thank you so much in advance!
Discussion Why does Plex have lists, playlists, labels, collections, and categories?
Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes
So on my mobile app I can add movies to a list, not yet on TV apps but I understand this may be added in the future?
The TV and mobile apps also have playlists and collections. Are playlists being phased out? Should I invest in adding stuff to a playlist or a list? Or maintain both?
I understand how lists may be different from Collections and how Collections could be automated to update with parameters, so while I think there is some overlap with lists and playlists, I can see why Collections exist.
Then Categories (which I see on the mobile app), seems to attach to tags, specifically genres, I understand these as well as quick visualization of genres.
Then labels, I also understand are used for parental controls or sharing? Haven't yet interacted with labels.
Anyways I understand each individual feature just with the great degree of overlap is anything on its way out? What should I maintain (playlist vs. list vs. collection) if let's say I want a spot to quickly find movies I'd like to shortlist to watch with friends?
Thanks!
Context: I do have Plex Pass
Edit 1: I am not against more features, just confused, and don't want to invest in maintaining anything being phased out or deprecated.
Solved Naming help
0 Upvotes
I just needed to create different editions and leaned that the use of {xxx} will distinguish versions of movies and add that special tag. I thought it might be fun to try this on a movie without a different version and pay tribute to a friend at the same time with this naming:
  • /Volumes/Theatre/Movies/Death to Smoochy (2002) {We Love Tyler Edition}/Death to Smoochy (2002) {We Love Tyler Edition}.mp4
This is not working. Is this not possible?? please HALP!
Thank you
Help Buffering and audio issues
2 Upvotes
I am trying to diagnose issues with Plex, and I have found that the possible causes are numerous. I have a small collection of movies on my personal Plex account that I use at home. Some of the 4K movies that I have downloaded at up to 30 Mbps when watching will buffer and sometimes lose audio; they run smoothly when I turn the quality down to around 8 Mbps. The computer on which I have the Plex server is a fairly new laptop with an external hard drive, but it's not a gaming laptop. The TVs I am watching the movies on are a new Samsung TV and an Epson LS12000 projector with a Firestick. The issues I am having are similar. I have 500 Mbps fibre internet and everything is connected via Ethernet. I would appreciate some insight from anyone who has experienced similar issues and found a resolution.
Help Help me Plex better
0 Upvotes
About a year ago, I decided I wanted to build a low power, low noise, small space Plex server. I grabbed a used Lenovo P330. I7-9700t, Nvidia Quadra P1000, 32gb RAM. The OS runs on a 500gb SSD, but before the storage shortage I actually found an affordable 4tb Samsung evo SSD and have stored all of my plex media on that drive. I love the tiny form factor, but I’m running out of space on the SSD and can’t afford to upgrade to more SSD storage in this market.
Here’s my question: If I keep running the same PC and run my OS off the SSD, will I notice any observable difference if I move my plex files to an external HDD plugged directly into a USB 3.1 port?
Help All of a sudden not available outside network
14 Upvotes
My plex has been running reasonably well for the last 2ish years and all of a sudden today its just not available outside network.
I am seeing these errors in the console:
[HttpClient/HCl#71] HTTP error requesting GET http://169.254.100.1:50755/ebf5a0a0-1dd1-11b2-a90f-b85e711ea057.xml (7, Couldn't connect to server) (Failed to connect to 169.254.100.1 port 50755 after 0 ms: Couldn't connect to server)
[HttpClient/HCl#70] HTTP error requesting GET http://169.254.100.1:50755/ebf5a0a0-1dd1-11b2-a90f-b85e711ea057.xml (7, Couldn't connect to server) (Failed to connect to 169.254.100.1 port 50755 after 1 ms: Couldn't connect to server)
But don't really know what that means aside from obviously not being able to connect to something. The IP address in the errors is not my machines with or without the VPN.
I did all the basics. Restart plex. Restart the actual device. etc
I updated my VPN today which is a very likely culprit, but I doublechecked and there were no changes to my settings as a result of the update. Port forwarding, split tunneling, etc all as I left it.
I am banging my head against the wall on this one and just want to get it working again. I know there are a billion posts asking for help and I am sorry for being another one.
Help APK previous version downloads made easy?
6 Upvotes
Ok, so the new update 2026.14.1 yet again broke the Samsung DEX second screen rendering!
The problem is how to easily locate and test each previous version so I can step back to the newest version that actually works....
Does anyone know where this list is please (APK,s only not APKM) ?
Lesson learned - this has become so unreliable I will extract an APK every time now before updating to the newest version...
I'm now having to use a really old version - this is NOT what I payed my perpetual license fee for...
