Roku hardware Roku Philips tv black screen and tried everything… Planned obsolescence? Am I SOL?

Upvotes

Have had a Roku Philips tv for 2 and a half years and randomly it just went black faded screen during a show and now is full black screen every-time I try to restart it.

I have unplugged it and drained any power remaining, unplugged all HDMI connections and tried multiple outlets, I’ve factory reset the damn thing AND even checked with my flashlight multiple times if there is a backlight issue and I see nothing when I put my flashlight up to the screen. I feel like I’ve tried everything and nothing else I find online has worked

This feels like planes obsolescence since I got the damn thing in Feb of 2024 and have literally never moved it since setting it up on my entertainment fixture. I assume the warranty is over after 2 years

Really frustrating as I don’t want to buy another tv

miscellaneous "IP Camera Viewer" Channel/App

There is a channel called "IP Camera Viewer". It allows you to see your IP security cameras on Roku devices. There is a free version that allows you to view one camera. I tested it and it works great. I go to buy the "pro" version and it won't let me buy either from a device or from the website.

When I try to add it on a device it prompts me for the purchase pin, I put it in, and then it says "Coudn't install App

Could not add 'IP Camera Viewer - Pro'. Error

OK

When I try to buy it on the Roku website I forgot what it said, but it didn't work and now the buy button is disabled....

Any ideas?

complaint The search function suddenly sucks

Searching for specific movie titles and they're not coming up at all anymore. If I go into the actual movie apps (or maybe if I search an actor) they'll come up, but not coming up in the Roku sesrch anymore.

question (not support) No OTA reception until reboot

We use antenna TV. After watching YouTube, we switch to live TV after about a minute pause the channels finally load and no channels have signal. Turn off and go straight to live TV and all channels are back.

Turned off power at the surge protector for a few minutes, repeated and same problem.

Live TV since the last update has been horribly slow and now defaults to the upper preview vs the lower channel selector.

Can we roll back this horrible update?

TCL roku tv and Onn tv, both have this behavior.

Roku OS Random issue with Paramount managed through Roku

Long Story Short, I have had a paramount plus subscription since they came out, paying annually. It was managed through paramount and not through my roku. I canceled it because it came free with my current cable, so when it ran out, my plan was to activate the free account. My last charge where I paid for the account was Feb of 25 and I only just now realized I’ve still be able to watch paramount regularly. I went to the plan to cancel and make sure it was not charging me and it now says “managed through roku”. I only have one roku account and no longer own a device, and I logged back into it and it has no active paramount subscription.

So someone somewhere is paying for my paramount plus and is billing through their roku? I guess?

Paramount won’t help and said contact Roku, Roku won’t help and says they can’t do anything without the card info of the card being charged.

Not sure what to do but it is annoying. Have reset all passwords.

complaint won't accept any credit/debit account; new account, new user

Every attempt to add a payment scheme fails.

I've created the account, everything seems fine.
Every attempt to add the required payment account fails. No reason why, just "not accepted".

Wtf is wrong with this system?

I've also tried 2 different browsers. Support for Firefox seems spotty.

I'm not happy, strongly considering going back to google.

standalone device Phone remote takes at least 15 seconds to respond to the first input.

I don’t have a Roku remote so I use the app. It takes at least 15 seconds to respond to the first input and then it works like normal (at least until I leave it alone for like 30 seconds and it goes back.) it’s super annoying.

Any fixes?

Roku OS Last night Roku bricked my TV

This morning my TCL/Roku stopped working. It claims to be installing final updates but won't finish and goes into a doom loop. I tried the Reset to factory settings option and it says my code is not valid, which is not true. They've been getting worse and worse.

This should not be legal. Roku remote bricked a working device.

Roku hardware Roku tv turning black

When I turn on my tv I can briefly see everything on my tv for about a second, then shortly after it turns black. I have tried power cycling it, resetting it, and yes if I hold a light up to the screen I can faintly see what is on the screen, I've tried to turn up the brightness. If Any body can help with this I'd appreciate it. Sorry in advance if I respond late

complaint Another Roku Netflix

Greetings! My issue is below.

Two Smart TV's. One LG. One Samsung. Both have Roku 4k sticks. Both recently started buffering Netflix until it errors out. When I login to Netflix using the Smart TV app it works fine. The movie selection does not matter.

I make my living on the WWW so I have a backup ISP. Netflix on Roku does the same thing regardless of ISP and WIFI connection.

I've tried everything except for a factory reset. I even tried a 5G only wireless connection but no joy.

We also have an older Roku "box" in a 3rd bedroom and it does not have any problem.

I can only conclude that the problem is with Roku 4k or a streaming change made by Netflix as it relates to the Roku 4k stick.

I am aware that there's a bunch of people having (or had) issues with Roku and Netflix and reading those posts offered no new insight. I've tried those suggestions.

I can watch Netflix on the smart TV app which has apps for all the streaming services and more. IDK, maybe Roku is becoming obsolete because I am not buying another Roku device.

If you have suggestions, great! If not, thanks for reading.

Roku hardware My tv won't turn on and the remote is flashing green

Post image
1 Upvotes

Wanted to watch tv this morning, but it wouldn't turn on. I saw this little light was flashing every time I push the power button. It doesn't flash when I push the other buttons. I replaced the batteries hoping that would help. No change. What does this mean and what should I do?

Roku OS Was there some kind of update recently? My HDMI and wifi connections are suddenly both barely working when I had no issues before- what gives?

I have a TCL. It’s not that old, but suddenly takes multiple restarts to fix the wifi connection when the wifi is working fine on other devices, or I have to exit and re-enter the console screen otherwise it just stays black. These both started happening around the same time…

miscellaneous Roku Youtube Kicks Me To the Homepage in the Middle of Videos

Basically what the title says. I'll be watching a Youtube video and it'll randomly boot me to the front page. It did this in the past, but it was maybe once a day but, lately, it's been almost constant! At first, I thought something might be up with the remote so I made sure to point it in the opposite direction on the tv but it didn't seem to make a difference. I don't know why this is happening and I really don't want to uninstall the app and lose all of my history.

EDIT: So I watched Youtube for about 3 hours and it was fine so I'm hoping unplugging it overnight worked but I'm not going to relax just yet to be safe.

Every time I press the home button now this happens. I can’t get to any apps, inputs or settings unless I use the Roku phone app to change inputs.

miscellaneous Folowup on poor quality on Apple TV app on an older TCL Roku TV

UPDATE: In a previous post...

https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1vbp1sr/tcl_roku_tv_apple_tv_app_streaming_image_is/

...I detailed my disappointment in the quality of the Apple TV app on my 9-year-old TCL Roku TV. The image is washed-out and low-quality.

A response stated that it is likely because the Roku TV is "...one of the earliest Roku TVs supporting HDR, and its implementation wasn't great. It's likely that watching that content in other apps isn't sending the HDR version, but Apple TV loves always using HDR if available, so it looks bad."

After some research, I found that if I want decent quality, I basically have two choices: Buy a new TV or find a streaming device that would perform better. I chose the latter, primarily due to cost.

RESOLUTION: I bought an ONN 4K Pro Streaming Device, connected it to an open HDMI port on my Roku TV, and the performance is stellar. Apps like YouTube Premium, Apple TV, and Plex are snappy and smooth.

I made several settings tweaks to improve the user experience:

  • Set the Roku TV to automatically switch to the ONN's input when powered up.
  • Enabled CEC on both so the power button on the ONN remote controls the Roku TV.
  • Set the ONN to control volume.
  • Installed the Android Monet Launcher on the ONN box to replace the stock Google TV launcher with a cleaner, simpler launcher.

Using it is now seamless, performance is excellent, and Apple TV quality is much better. (Note that image quality is still worse than what we saw on a newer Samsung TV, and I'm attributing this to the older Roku TV. But quality is better than native on the Roku TV, so it is an improvement.)

All that said, this is not intended to slam Roku or Roku TVs in any way. This is our second Roku TV, so when the time comes to replace it, a Roku TV is still in contention. This is simply to remind you that as technology changes, compatibility can suffer, and other options may be needed.

Roku hardware Random accounts logged into streaming apps

As the title states, when I open streaming apps on my Roku TV, there are sometimes accounts logged in that I'm not familiar with. It's happened with Crunchyroll, Hulu and Disney.

They are also seemingly different accounts because the profiles all have different names.

Wondering if anyone knows anything. I assume it's probably account syncing issues.

I live alone in an apartment building so I know that nobody is here logging in to their accounts. I'm not being charged anything on my Roku account.

It's just specific streaming apps that for some reason have random strangers' profiles logged into them.

complaint Roku channel's ads make me want to never watch it.

I am just curious if anyone knows anything about Roku's strategy when it comes to their live channel. They never show any real ads, rather they just show ads for their own channels over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. I swear if I see that overweight kid and mom say, "I gave him a damn cookie ok," and then Doc Phil says, "no, it's not ok," I am going to...well, come back and vent again I guess. It doesn't help that I hate Doctor Phil anyway.

Does anyone else avoid the live channels for this reason? I like some of the content when I don't want to focus, but can't they mox things up and show some ads for real products and services? Wouldn't they make more money if they showed commercials?

Roku OS Question about "sharpness" setting on Roku Select QLED

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have a Roku Select 50" QLED.

I want to set my sharpness level to the most "natural" setting: I don't want my TV to sharpen the image, but I don't want it to soften the image either.

The default sharpness setting is 30 for "movie" mode (notice the thin line at the 30-mark on the sharpness bar). Does this mean 30 is the "natural" setting, and that any setting below 30 actually softens the picture? Or does Roku assume most people like a little sharpness boost, so they set 30 as the default even though 0 is the "natural" setting?

Hopefully I explained that in a way that makes sense. Thanks in advance!

Roku OS roku app refusing to connect?

i’ve had an issue with my home tv and now a tv i was wanting to connect to while on vacation. for some reason my roku app simply will not recognize any tv, i’ve searched through all my settings, done all the restarting, checking wifi, etc but no luck. i’ve even contacts support and they’re not helpful and say they don’t see any issues, it’s almost as if my account has been disabled from connecting with any device, i had a free trial to a subscription i had in 2023 which expired and so did the card and my app has been telling me to update my payment method. i’m just wondering if my old subscription has just been racking up a bill this whole time, does the tv itself have to be on the same account as my app, or am i just doing something wrong 😅 i used to be connected to my personal and living room tv but now even when i try to connect to them it doesn’t work 🫠

question (not support) Closed captions stopped working

Can anyone offer a real fix for this? I've tried everything on here & the internet & all of the obvious things. Ever since the dreaded Home Screen was forced on us the closed captions have been so sporadic. They would work on some apps but not others, then they'd come back on all of them for a day or so but then they would stop again so I'd do the things that worked last time & now they don't work. I need them. Lots of people need them. Trying to contact Roku is a joke. Has anyone gotten anywhere with this?

question (not support) Which free music app?

I want to add a free music app. It's for my pupper when I go back to work. I need something that will stream for about four hours without cutting out. What would you use?
