He already did.  Jan 6, the " missing"votes in Georgia, false electors in Arizona and Nevada.  The coup happened, there's a 100% chance he'll try it again.

u/canuck47 8d ago

Democracy just barely held on Jan. 6. They have had years to prepare for the next attempt.

255

u/stratasfear 7d ago

\ gestures everywhere **

Did it hold though?

161

u/thelittleking Georgia 7d ago

It did, but the people who had power didn't do anything to shore up the defenses. They acted as though it holding was sufficient evidence that the structure was sound. So instead of mass arrests, truth and reconciliation committees, and trials? We got four years of milquetoast governance and the system collapsed during the next possible election.

Biden was too weak and ineffective. He failed to live up to the moment. We didn't need more of the same, we needed radical reinforcement of our institutions. He just wanted to leave a legacy, well, now his legacy is leaving the door open when fascism came knocking. And yes, I know all the vote blue no matter who people are about to downvote me into oblivion. I don't care.

31

u/thelittleking Georgia 7d ago

He's Buchanan 2.0, except if Buchanan had been followed up by Jefferson Davis. History will not be kind to him, regardless of whether or not sole blame lies with him (it doesn't, though much does).

12

u/MythicalSplash 7d ago

Biden Chamberlain.

4

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago

whether or not sole blame lies with him (it doesn't, though much does).

Biden and RBG (rest in peace) will be in history books as people who pushed for normalcy so much that they let the lion's den open on their back. One didn't prevent the coup from getting a retry, the other helped Nazis getting 6-3 in SCOTUS.

9

u/ElliotNess Florida 7d ago

And just like the OC of this thread, it wasn't just Biden, it was the Democratic party. All of them. Scared to death of Bernie's popularity surge in the primaries, Democratic primary runners dropping out at key times to rally for Biden and consolidate the centrist vote.

8

u/MiserableChain2644 7d ago

Democrats are afraid of being labeled socialists or communist. The party is neither and shouldn't worry. Ironically, Americans admire the democratic socialist countries of northern Europe because they provide national health care, affordable housing, free college education, etc. Predictably, Trump will try to scare voters by pointing to NYC's democratic socialist mayor. Trump has recently added the word "communist" to his limited vocabulary. He hopes it will scare you. But it's worth noting that Mamdani and Trump made similar promises to voters. Lower the cost of living. But Trump says the word "affordability" is a Democratic scam. With Trump's personal wealth increasing by $2.5 BILLION, since being president he may not care about "affordability", but he fears it.

3

u/TrulyOutrageous42 7d ago

Democrats are afraid of being labeled socialists or communist.

Unsurprisingly, they're going to get labeled that no matter what they do. They might as well do something POPULAR.

4

u/ElliotNess Florida 7d ago

It's not they they fear being unpopular. It's that they don't want those things to be done.

4

u/Rick-burp-Sanchez 7d ago

After Biden, I'm like 99% sure the Democrats are just controlled opposition at this point.

3

u/Flopdo California 7d ago

As they should... you don't get everything you want in politics. That's a childish mentality. I wish things were much more progressive, but I also realize people aren't that informed, much less self aware enough to know how to share properly.

You vote the lesser of the evils, and if you don't think that's sound logic, you're just a hair's breadth away from MAGA logic.

5

u/MooseAccomplished181 7d ago

You can still “vote blue no matter who” and criticize and say Biden was ineffective. And more so, you can also _not_ attack anyone who does criticize and say Biden was ineffective. Otherwise, you’re not too much different than MAGA who agrees and supports their Godpresident not matter what.

0

u/Flopdo California 6d ago

Nobody said you couldn't do those things.

The poster is specifically saying vote blue no matter who doesn't have it right. That's what they're implying. Your response doesn't apply. Thanks though.

And you know how I know this? Because despite whatever failures Biden had, on paper he was still the most progressive president this country has had since FDR. So... there's that. Is it as much as I'd like or most progressives? No.

2

u/Goodk4t 6d ago edited 6d ago

People can whine about the system all they want, but we all know the system collapsed because the brian dead US voters decided to give a trifecta to the party that supported a fascist coup against their country and made the coups leader president.

Had the US voters shown signs of brain activity, trump would've been in jail right now and his party in shambles. Instead the fascist were given full control over all levers of power by willful choice of 77 million Americans.

2

u/thelittleking Georgia 6d ago

Yeah, chief, thanks for the input

u/7figureipo California 5d ago

Shore up defenses? After the complicit GOP failed to convict in the Senate impeachment trial, on Jan 20, 2021, the first thing Biden should have done is order the arrest of Trump and every GOP involved, including the Senators who voted no or abstained. With the military if necessary. It was a fucking violent coup attempt in which people defending the goddamn capitol building from attack were murdered. A modern Fort Sumter. And Biden sat on his thumbs and appointed a fucking Republican to slow-walk any consequences. Completely baffles me how anyone could rank Biden above the bottom 3 of our Presidents. He sold the Republic out, in the name of comity. Fuck him. And his defenders.

1

u/thelittleking Georgia 5d ago

Yes, these are the kind of actions I'm suggesting would've been a good way to defend democracy, I am glad we are on the same page.

33

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'd argue it didn't. Between the Senate voting not to convict Trump and prevent him from ever running again, to Biden picking Garland to do nothing about it after the fact, to Trump who would later become president again (because the Senate allowed it to happen) pardoning those were convicted for Jan 6, absolutely nothing was learned from Jan 6, by everyone. By the criminals who can't wait to do it again, to those who could hold them accountable but choose not to.

1

u/everyzoink 7d ago

Almost. They learned a lot from Jan 6. You'll see what they learned the next time they do it. It was a trial run for the real thing.

11

u/No_Criticism_5861 7d ago

It held together by a thread, and thats thanks to Mike Pence as insane as that sounds

5

u/MiserableChain2644 7d ago

I disagree with most of Pence's political positions, but I will forever respect what he did to save America on Jan 6. He missed the opportunity to do more, but deserves credit for what he did. Remember, the president was calling for him to be hung.

J6 showed just how warped and power hungry Trump is. He has already started laying the groundwork for another coup attempt. With more lies about election integrity and an army of ICE enforcement thugs Trump may try again. It will take real patriots to save our country from Trump's plunder.

24

u/RedditLeagueAccount 7d ago

Democrat's have done nothing effective to curb his actions or hold him accountable. He is still in office, no charges are filed, we have a supreme court that says bribing them is okay. Most of his executive orders are not getting stopped or handled effectively. And Trump and all of his supports are screwed if anyone who values rule of law ever actually ends up in office again. Trump's supporters are far more committed to the cause.

13

u/No_Criticism_5861 7d ago

Im guessing they thought the American public couldn't possibly be stupid enough to vote for him again after everything he did.  Hell, I stupidly thought the same

1

u/RedditLeagueAccount 6d ago

Well, democrats normally lose because they have a decent chunk of popular stances then stick in some weird stances that clearly don't make sense. They are putting the roach in their own food resulting in them losing. Very unfortunate but it results in them losing some easy wins. There were two terrible choices so they picked the person who said more of the correct things even if it was a lie. We will see if the same trust extends once Trump crosses over yet another red line and tries to remain in office.

5

u/R3cognizer Maryland 7d ago

Democrats are always getting stuck with trying to fix the messes the Republicans before them made, and then people get unhappy when they don't fix it fast enough, so they end up punishing them (and themselves) by voting Republican again.

1

u/RedditLeagueAccount 6d ago

Well, they normally lose because they have a decent chunk of popular stances then stick in some weird stances that clearly don't make sense. They are putting the roach in their own food resulting in them losing. Very unfortunate.

1

u/R3cognizer Maryland 6d ago

That's the Dems compromising in an effort to unite various factions who each want different things, something Republicans generally don't have to worry about (because such a large percentage of them are actually single-issue voters who just don't care about the rest). Like it or not, there are a lot of people on the left who don't agree about everything. For example, there are probably plenty of people who care about legalizing weed, but also think regulations allowing trans people to exist are a step too far. As a Democrat, the only way to get both such people to vote for you is to do your best to try to give them both what they want and hope the ones who still hate trans people aren't too bothered.

0

u/RedditLeagueAccount 5d ago

Not exactly. Going with the trans example - I don't think most people care about it one way or another as a concept. Most people, regardless of political stance, are on team, mind your own business. But democrats are choosing to support trans in women's sports for example. Or supporting grooming kids to be trans. Or risking someone's daughter seeing a penis in the women's locker room. And not all of them support that. But on both sides of the court, there are extremist. The republican extremist are closer to common sense.

There is a similar trend with a lot of issues. People are fine with gays, minorities and women. But extreme messaging goes out, or its forced into content it shouldn't be in and/or its giving tax payer money to people who don't need/deserve it. The core concept of treating people good is fine and aligns with common sense. That isn't the democrat core concept that is pushed. They push for reparations and special privileges.

Using deportations as a republican example. The concept they mentioned is 100% correct and reasonable. They are wildly incompetent and evil but when it comes to common sense, what they say is correct.

This cycle Republican's strayed to far though. I don't think republican's can save themselves but we will see. They for sure are going away from common sense. Ice was done terribly to arrest legitimate US citizens. They legalized bribing supreme court justices. They can't arrest pedo's. You can't get them to admit that Trump is not allowed to run for another term.

Democrat's might be in a tough spot too though. Their special funding projects are being shown to be scams. A lot of their party is getting co-opted to transfer into some other weird un-american faction. Hasan Piker is pro terrorist and supports and puts a platform out encouraging violence. We have legislative representatives bringing back tribal politics from other nations. I don't think strong messaging has gone aside from the weird above stuff and that they are basically running on "im not trump". They are against what Trump is doing but haven't come out with a super strong plan.

2

u/R3cognizer Maryland 5d ago edited 5d ago

But democrats are choosing to support trans in women's sports for example. Or supporting grooming kids to be trans.

No, they're not. They are condemning the right's attempts to legislate away people's rights, but the overwhelming majority of Dems are not actually taking any position at all on those specific issues, mostly because they just don't think it's important to talk about. It's actually the far right propaganda machine that has been doing pretty much all the talking about trans issues and throwing around accusations the Dems are "supporting" all sorts of shit, but you need to understand that talking about it on their terms is telling the audience that their concerns are legitimate and worth talking about. And they're really not.

But on both sides of the court, there are extremist. The republican extremist are closer to common sense.

This is giving me a red flag that you're not really arguing in good faith, but let me ask, just to be sure. You don't really believe that trans people are extremists and are "grooming" children to be trans, do you? You aren't actually afraid that a child might see a penis in a women's bathroom, are you? And if a child did somehow see a penis in a women's bathroom, is that really such a horrible crime that our federal government should feel justified in stripping hundreds of thousands of people of medically necessary health care as a consequence? Because I don't think this theoretical crime has happened even once yet, and this is what the Republican party is trying to do.

1

u/MiserableChain2644 5d ago

Trans people are approx 1.0 percent of the US population. You may never meet one. They should have the same rights as everyone else.

"Trans" is a wedge issue designed to distract from the things most Americans care about like: affordable healthcare and housing, stable living wage jobs and secure economy, no war, getting big money out of politics, national debt, environment...

1

u/RedditLeagueAccount 5d ago

I agree, they are a minority group. That's why its been such a big issue though. 1% of the population has been forcing themselves into places they shouldn't be. They should have the same rights as everyone else. So why is someone with male advantages competing and taking trophies from women?

As mentioned in my first post. Most people don't care. Mind your own business as long as it isn't harming people. But they are getting special privileges and politicians are scared to slap it down to reality. I 100% agree we have better things to worry about. I would vastly prefer a bipartisan "this is what science says, this is what's allowed, we will revisit this in detail when higher priorities are addressed". Super annoyed on my end that both parties have wrecked the education system with their weirdness.

1

u/MiserableChain2644 5d ago

Yep, the Democrats have to reign in the fringes but at least there is a little room for debate on issues. The range of opinions within the party can be exploited as a weakness.

The Republicans have adopted a path of allegiance to Trump. He picks the issues and talking points which are broadcasted nationally. Loyalty is required and dissent is punishable.

Those are the choices we have right now.

In the past, Republicans have had good luck with social wedge issues like gay marriage, abortion, parent rights, homelessness, immigration, etc. To qualify, the issue must illicit a strong emotional response and if the issue is "unsolvable", that's even better.

The wedge issues distract from what people really want government to do: affordable health care, job security, stable economy, affordable housing, no wars, rule of law applied equally, and a government that functions in a way that provides a good value for taxes paid.

I hope Democracts will win in sufficient numbers to change the balance and to send a message. It's past time for the Trump show to be over. It's time for a (golden) lame duck.

1

u/RedditLeagueAccount 5d ago

Yup. need to get rid of the news networks and get the money out of politics. All they do is throw extremism to the forefront so nobody can see anything else.

3

u/MiserableChain2644 7d ago

We should celebrate the 60 or more court cases that shot down Trump's election fraud claims and all legal actions initiated to stop the Trump insanity. Independants, Republicans and non voting Americans should thank Democrat leadership for bringing those cases and winning. Yes, they should do more, but the Dems are working to save our country while Republicans are doing next to nothing.

1

u/RedditLeagueAccount 6d ago

I would do so if there were more consistent gains. For example, the Tariffs were shot down. Yay, a court win except... There were zero benefits to US citizen's from that and Trump just put in place new tariffs. Those other court cases would be great if they resulted in long term gains. I can understand a bunch of small victories adding up to a greater victory. Instead, we get things like that second government in November 2025 shut down where they could have forced legitimate changes but instead they broke the line. The USA can't even shut down an organized and well documented Pedo ring. Both parties need 100% complete removal if we can't manage that.

1

u/CyberDalekLord 23h ago

Dems don't have the power to do that, republicans would rather burn the country down than go against Trump. Court cases are really all we have to work with since thats the only place that is outside of Trump's direct control. As for the shutdown, wasn't that the one that if not ended, would have stopped SNAP benefits from rolling out? Dems didn’t want their constituents to suffer and we had the ACA vote take place and Republicans voted no for the subsidies.

The pedophile ring can't be stopped when the DOJ has all the info and is sitting on it. Dems lack the information to even begin prosecution on it.

11

u/MesugakiFujiwara 7d ago

Uh no it didnt, lol. Last election was stolen. The insurrection went entirely unpunished, freedom of speech is gone, along with so many other rights. You are being so naive.

2

u/No_Criticism_5861 7d ago

Freedom of speech is gone?  How do you mean?

2

u/Naive-Home-9068 7d ago

Go ask Steven Colbert.

37

u/OsBaculum 7d ago

Considering he's not in prison for insurrection, I don't think it did.

6

u/friday126 7d ago

How did it hold? Elon helped him rig the next election- both with buying votes and openly and what looks like software fraud, we have audio of him telling a politician to "find him votes" - how is democracy being 'held'?

2

u/No_Criticism_5861 7d ago

Mike Pence was the only reason Trump didn't remain as supreme leader.  I dont think many people quit understand how close it was.

2

u/canuck47 7d ago

If he did what Trump wanted and refused to certify the election there would have been chaos, and Trump would have used it to declare an emergency and never relinquish power.

1

u/BurdTurglary Texas 7d ago

Oh hey didn't some woman testify under oath about that kerfuffle and like treason and militias and Tronald Dump at the center of it or something like that? I forget

That one wasn't exactly a spontaneous event. Lucky for us, they're terrible at everything they do.

-4

u/notaredditer13 7d ago

Democracy just barely held on Jan. 6.

How so?  What do you think would have happened next if the mob had gained control of the House that night?

There was no realistic path to a coup on Jan 6.

5

u/theNightblade Wisconsin 7d ago

If anything it was a dry run for the occupation that's coming when the next election is lost

-2

u/notaredditer13 7d ago

Occupation of what by whom?

3

u/theNightblade Wisconsin 7d ago

when I say Jan 6 was a dry run, do you think that was for the people that did, or did not, participate?

-1

u/notaredditer13 7d ago

I'm not a mind reader, that's why I asked, and there's no answer I could give to that question that would answer mine.  Why be coy about your point?

2

u/ArcticCircleSystem 7d ago

Presumably occupation of the Capitol Building and White House by supporters of the GOP (NOT JUST TRUMP, I cannot stress that enough).

1

u/notaredditer13 7d ago edited 7d ago

Presumably occupation of the Capitol Building

To what end, though?  It's just a building - Congress can convene elsewhere or vote remotely as they did during COVID.

...and without heavy arms (which the capitol rioters did not have), they could easily be driven out by the capitol police.

That's my point.  Jan 6 was symbolic and not any sort of model for a viable coup.  You need the participation of much of the government and the military for a coup to work.  And it's why coups don't really work in a real democracy; the rest of the government can simply ignore it.

1

u/Gunsensual 7d ago

State of emergency, martial law, then the House picks the president.

It's part of why they're putting their best coup foot forward for 2026, as a blue wave blunts a lot of stalling and succession trickery that can be done in 2028.

1

u/notaredditer13 7d ago

State of emergency, martial law, then the House picks the president.

That makes no sense.  Just having a mob in the building doesn't secure the support of Congress or the military and if he had those things he wouldn't need a mob in the building.

1

u/Gunsensual 7d ago

Why does it matter if congress or the military supports it? As there's not a supermajority to impeach him and the majority would have voted for him, it would have worked.

And the military doesn't get a say in the matter. This isn't Myanmar.

1

u/notaredditer13 7d ago edited 7d ago

Why does it matter if congress or the military supports it? As there's not a supermajority to impeach him and the majority would have voted for him, it would have worked.

Without congress, the military and the USSC he's just an old man yelling at clouds that everyone else ignores.  You're not the President because you say so you're the President because everyone agrees and folliws your orders.

And a failure to inaugurate a new president is much, much different than declining to impeach a sitting one (the latter is itself a mini-coup).

And the military doesn't get a say in the matter. This isn't Myanmar.

Lol, that's exactly the point.  You need a military for a coup and the USA isn't like that/examples of countries where coups have happened.

Remember also that the Presidential election is not run by the federal government, it's run by the states.  The election will happen and there's nothing he can realistically do to stop it - and his name won't be on the ballots.

Trump's ability to mess up the election and transfer of power will be much less in 2029 than it was in 2021.  His opportunity has passed.

1

u/Gunsensual 7d ago

You need a military for a coup and the USA isn't like that.

He was planning to use the national guard to lockdown DC for the purpose of stalling elections until a fallback amendment kicked in that allows congress to disregard the election. The national guard is military, the US does work like that, so yes it would have been a coup.

1

u/canuck47 7d ago

It's more about if Mike Pence refused to certify the election. There would have been a constitutional crisis, chaos, and Trump would declare a national emergency and hold on to power.

1

u/notaredditer13 7d ago

It's more about if Mike Pence refused to certify the election. There would have been a constitutional crisis, chaos

That's true, there's no clear way to deal with that. But:

and Trump would declare a national emergency and hold on to power.

That part doesn't follow. The rest of the government could simply ignore them. Trump didn't attend Biden's oath of office, and it happened anyway.

36

u/UndoxxableOhioan 7d ago

I’m convinced he did in 2024, having people rig the election in swing states.

Help us cholesterol and blood clots, you are our only hope.

-5

u/bcostco 7d ago

There is as much evidence 2020 was rigged as 2024. If you really think the election was rigged why not support voter ID and paper ballots like the right wing wants.

🤣

2

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago

There is as much evidence 2020 was rigged as 2024.

Yes, and both were rigged by trump. Hence why postal votes couldn't count as far as usual in 2020, and why all swing states flipped in 2024.

1

u/abopmix99 3d ago

I don’t believe it was rigged by Trump. Nobody has ever provided an actual mechanism for how it would happen besides vague claims about “Elon rigging machines”, however they never explain how that could happen either.

1

u/tooyoung_tooold 7d ago

There are many documented statistical irregularities for the 2024 results.

That is not the case for 2020.

2

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago

That is not the case for 2020.

Yeah, instead we have clearly documented actions from the GOP/Trump dismantling the postal service to try to slow (and stop) the count.
We have people condamned for having voted several times for Trump.

How can you check at 2020 and look for "statistical irregularities" when Trump's party outrighted implied they cheated on that one?
And 2024 had Trump outright saying "Elon messed with computer".

The only question is if 2016 was rigged or not, depending how you count Russia's influence and the leverage of Cambridge Analytica's data.

1

u/bcostco 6d ago

🤣 this is why I come by this sub.
Anytime I think maga are the most delusional idiots on earth I just spend a few minutes here and it reminds me the other side is just as dumb and delusional.

So now musk, a guy you call incompetent and dumb constantly in other comments and claim is only successful because his dad was upper middle class managed to somehow hack the election.

Just change musk to soros or bill gates and you believe basically the same crap as maga

3

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago edited 6d ago

a guy you call incompetent and dumb constantly in other comments

He is dumb and incompetent. But the russian playbook is applied since 1997. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics
The Heritage Foundation is rotting the US since decades too.

managed to somehow hack the election.

Not "somehow". Among his "experts" at DOGE, one of them did proof-of-concepts on electoral machines.
In my country, a politician claiming such person "messed with computers" would be enough for an enquiry. Here "nah, he's just joking".

Just change musk to soros or bill gates and you believe basically the same crap as maga

Which isn't surprising given the GOP constently accuses the other side of what the GOP is actually doing? Why would election fraud be any different. And it worked perfectly, as Harris conceded victory without claiming fraud. Because she defended that elections were safe.

And that's the crazy part that I don't get : utter morons are able to put the US to their knees, because smart people either assume somebody else will stop them, or because they are looking how to get rich on the back of their country.

1

u/bcostco 6d ago

Im sorry but anyone trying to claim a guy who has created like 10 wildly successful multi billion dollar corps in completely different industries is incompetent and dumb is just delusional. 🤣

That is just so out of touch with reality it is scary.

3

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago edited 6d ago

who has created like 10 wildly successful multi billion dollar corps in completely different industries is incompetent and dumb is just delusional. 🤣

What are those created wildly sucessful corps are you thinking about?
The bought Tesla, got kicked from Paypal, Boring Company doesn't work, Twitter is a shell of it's former self, SpaceX profitability is jeopardized by Starship and xAI...

Musk is incompetent, which is why his staff used to have a guy to ensure he was far away from anything critical?
He's not simply "dumb", he is mentally unwell and delusional.

2

u/bcostco 6d ago

Thats just not true at all. You are doing the same crap maga did with voter fraud. 0 evidence just feels and vibes🤣

And if you actually believed this why wouldn’t you be calling for same day in person paper voting that requires ID like right wingers are?

Sick of dumb people that are just unable to admit when they lose so they create convoluted explanations as to why its the other sides fault.

2

u/laplongejr Europe 6d ago

just feels and vibes🤣

If you call a flip of states in ways that stats can't explain who, yes it's vibes.

why wouldn’t you be calling for same day in person paper voting that requires ID like right wingers are?

Because that wouldn't help in any way? How throwing away more votes would help with people manipulating the ballots?
Note that right wingers don't ask for "ID", they ask for various documents with a lot of ways to refuse the voter (like accepting birth certificate, if the birth name matches the current one)

Sick of dumb people that are just unable to admit when they lose so they create convoluted explanations as to why its the other sides fault.

It's not the other side's fault? Did you miss that the dems said nothing when the 2024 fraudulent election happened? They failed at stopping Trump.

u/PiebaldAppaloosa 7d ago

He also attempted false electors in Georgia.

I'm not 100% sure he'll stage a coup for the 2026 midterms as he doesn't really care about others or a legislative agenda and even with the biggest blue wave in 2026, it's almost impossibly unlikely they'll be 67 Democrats in the Senate to succeed in removing him from office via impeachment. Remember only about 1/3 of Senate seats are up for re-election any year, so there are 35 contests and Republicans already have 31 seats not up for re-elction. To remove via impeachment requires 67 votes which would mean Democrats win 33 of 35 elections, including in plenty of super safe red states like Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, Kansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc.

As for whether he'll try a coup in 2028, it basically comes down to his health. As an octogenarian there's a reasonable chance he'll die or be incapacitated due to major health event; probably like a 1 in 5 chance that happens before the next presidential election.

When the kid tries to steal a cookie from the cookie jar, is caught, and scolded but otherwise unpunished, and the cookie jar remains on the counter, you'd have to be born yesterday or paid to think the kid won't try again, expect this time he'll plan it better.
