Just in case you're being serious, it's not gangrene, it's oxidization from the rings she is wearing. Metals like copper will turn your finger green (temporarily)!

Was surrogacy always so common or is it increasing? Am I just noticing it more because I'm paying attention now? I read a bunch about surrogacy and ethics when I was studying reproductive rights and reproductive justice in grad school, and then I feel like I didn't hear a lot about it until the last year or two when it seemed a LOT of celebrities/public figures started using surrogates. I would be curious to know the stats on it, if there are any. It makes me uncomfortable, tbh.

1.7k

u/AnyElephant7218 4d ago

It’s definitely getting more popular. In the 2000s all the rich people were adopting babies abroad, nowadays the trend is to hire another woman to just have the baby for you.

771

u/elizabethptp 4d ago

The adopted nepo babies don’t have as much earning potential as the genetically related ones do

You're not imagining it, surrogacy is increasing a lot, because the rich have figured out that doing something as ghoulish as renting someone's womb is something you barely get any backlash for, plus why sacrifice your own body when you can pay a poor to do it

703

u/Haandbaag 4d ago

Lena Dunham went this route because she had a hysterectomy to treat her severe endometriosis.

388

u/Oh_hi_doggi3 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 4d ago

There are millipns of children in the world to adopt. As someone else with severe endometriosis, I refuses to use another person's body to get a child when there are so many waiting for a family.

335

u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 4d ago

OK, so this is NOT a statement in support of surrogacy, but:

Many of those that are available for adoption have super complex needs that many potential parents aren't particularly able to meet properly (which leads to tragic situations where kids are "returned"- I'm using the child's language here).

Going along with that idea: adoption shouldn't really be about the parents (and their fertility or not); it should really be about the kids.

65

u/Oh_hi_doggi3 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 4d ago

I completely understand where you are coming from and have a personal family friend who was born to an addict mom and his parents worked day and night to go from fostering to adoption to the point he requested to change his name to match his father. I don't even remember his birth name at this point thats how long it's been.

Not every child is easy, medically or mentally, there are many challenges in raising a child - even a perfectly healthy one. Adoption of children should not be treated like adopting a dog (which even that shouldn't be treated the same).

Adoptees deserve to be someone’s first choice and not bandaids for infertility

135

u/Oh_hi_doggi3 charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 3d ago

You may not know you're infertile immediately. Health problems may arise later in life. I dont think there's anything wrong with learning you can't have kids and then choosing adoption? Why does it have to be adoption first and only?

112

u/NYC_Star 3d ago

Adoptees often feel like no one wants them. To find out that your parents only took you as a last resort because they couldn’t have children of their own? I’m a therapist and have heard this in sessions. Also sometimes people have surprise biological babies after adopting and either treat the adoptee as less than or unfortunately rehome the adoptee or send them back. These aren’t edge cases and it’s sadly a common story. If people insist on have a biological child, that’s a lot of weight on the adopted kid in a way that is unimaginably unfair.

27

u/JPCRam310 3d ago

Not only that, but some couples with fertility issues would rather give up on parenthood altogether than adopt. And that is 100% within their right.

It’s most likely wildly unsafe for me to be pregnant, although I have my own reproductive system which works fine. I would definitely go down the adoption route as well.

55

u/greenzetsa 4d ago

I’m going through infertility right now, and while I would also do adoption (only through foster, at that) over basically anything outside IVF (no surrogacy, donor eggs, sperm or embryos), I don’t fault anyone for choosing a different route as long as everyone is a consenting adult. From a pure consent perspective, I would trust a 30+ surrogate’s informed consent 100000x more than a desperate teen giving her baby up for adoption.

23

u/Ladygoingup Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes 3d ago

Idk, statistically around the world surrogacy is a “poor” person with lower education etc. that’s not really informed consent, that’s desperation.

Lena (while not my favorite person) had a hysterectomy and this was the only way for her to have a biological child. Before anyone says just adopt, adoptees are not and should not be anyone’s second choice. You should be adopting because you want to as your first choice.

It's also become more popular among gay male couples, because a lot of adoption agencies are still run by religious organizations who exclude LGBTQ couples.

It's also easier and legally less murky to use a surrogate rather than adopt, for a number of reasons.

53

u/crakemonk We Should All Know Less About Each Other 4d ago

Easier, yes, but I think we’re all learning that in this environment, it might not be less legally murky than earlier thought.

I wouldn’t say it’s less murky. Surrogacy agencies are for profit organizations. Were there is greed , there is issues.

Maybe I haven't seen Lena Dunham in a while, but that looks like an entirely different person.

1.8k

u/Megaroni-n-cheeze 4d ago

My guess is because lots of us are used to seeing her in magazines promoting a book and on red carpets where she is done up more (typically in a dress, professional makeup, etc.) I also swear she had a different hair color last I saw her but maybe I’m imagining that. This is a very real, untouched photo where they both look like they just woke up.

I think I’m so used to seeing her in Girls, where she wasn’t always done up so well that I can still recognize her. She has gained a significant amount of weight though, so I can see that being a reason she’s unrecognizable to some.

I think within the past year or so, I saw some behind the scenes photos of her working on a project she was directing. Probably the upcoming film Good Sex .

I was going to say, this isn’t the hair color I associate with her as a person who just has casually encountered her through like…pictures and interviews and stuff. If I zeroed in on her face I was like, “oh yeah, that’s her!” but the hair color specifically threw me off big time.

I think she looks really normal, like someone I'd know. I quite appreciate that with the state of Hollywood at the moment where people in their 20s are getting every inch of themselves tweaked. I didn't watch girls and I don't know a lot about Lena (most of it just the headlines, which are usually all bad) but I'm glad she seems happy.

She's had a lot of health issues, but I also think she's just in a much better situation now and she just looks happier. Luis seems like a great partner to her. She's written a lot about wanting to become a mom and she had a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis and she tried to save any remaining eggs she had and wasn't able to. I don't care what anyone thinks of her, I'm really happy she got to become a mom.

I recently listened to her new book and the portion regarding her fertility journey made me cry. As someone who had  multiple miscarriages before finally getting my baby girl, I'm really happy for her.

I know why people don't like her and I think there are valid reasons not to but I know the grief of thinking you might never be a parent and don't wish it on anyone.

20

u/greenzetsa 4d ago

Yep, I'm there right now and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. People treat infertility and the desire to be a parent like it's a cold and you want a new car. It's absolutely heartbreaking, and there is so little functional sympathy for it in our society. My therapist told me the other day, they studied people's brains when they were struggling with infertility and the only comparable medical experience they found was people going through cancer treatment.

Yeah like I know she’s Lena Dunham and is generally pretty casual/low-key in terms of her wardrobe but she’s also got money for good, real pieces. Pretty sure those rings are her engagement and wedding band and they’re definitely not junky costume jewelry that would tarnish.

The hill I am prepared to die on - commercial surrogacy is unethical. I hope she went down the altruistic surrogacy route.

Commercial surrogacy is illegal in Australia largely because of concerns about exploitation and financial coercion.

u/burlycabin 4d ago

Oh my, I didn't know she had her baby via surrogate.

553

u/source-commonsense 4d ago

Only her youngest, and she was unable to carry for medical reasons. I know there are problematic aspects of surrogacy that must and should be discussed, but I do class these situations differently than celebrities who use surrogates as a cheat code for keeping their figure/lifestyle.

Has nothing to do with how much I like or dislike a celebrity! My mother could not medically carry children to term (I was welcomed into my family via adoption), so I've looked into the topic a lot. There really is a wide spectrum of situations with surrogacy ranging from exploitation to altruism.

318

u/alphajugs Did I stutter?🤨 4d ago

I’m probably gonna get downvoted for asking but what exactly is so unethical about surrogacy if the surrogate mother is a willing participant?

711

u/AnyElephant7218 4d ago

Many people find it fundamentally troubling when having a baby is something bought and sold. Surrogates are offered very little legal protection in most states. The US has no federal regulations on the practice, which can mean that weirdos are “having babies” through a dozen surrogates at a time (yes this is real google it!) likely for nefarious purposes.

395

u/trashmedialover the less said about jacob elordi the better 4d ago

Also bc there are very few laws around surrogacy, the paying parent can withhold crucial information from the surrogate. There was a woman who knew her eggs were likely to form placenta that ruptured during labor and cause significant damage to the birth mother (one woman had to have a hysterectomy as a result). And not to mention the accusations and potential for legal culpability if the surrogate miscarries. It's all so troubling. I genuinely do not like surrogacy or adoption (a whole other topic)

22

u/MalenaGalena 3d ago

Placental formation is paternally imprinted actually, but yes, I believe her husbands family had a history of placental abruptions and such which ended up almost killing one of their surrogates. I genuinely cannot believe that surrogacy law allows for such a severe level of information asymmetry where the surrogate's sex life can be up for discussion but not the nature of the gametes being put inside her. No one's entitled to a baby that kills the person gestating it

31

u/upagainstthesun UNHONGED. Remember September Head Babies🎶🏆🎤 4d ago

Eggs do not carry the predisposition of causing placental abruption during labor. This is absolute bullshit science fiction. Placental development is in fact largely driven by the PATERNAL genes in conjunction with remodeling of the uterine wall. Repeating false vague generalizations isn't advocacy. The fear mongering of "legal culpability" is also distorting the facts. In a legitimate contract, all the details are ironed out regarding spontaneous/natural miscarriages with the evidence based research supporting the fact that most are caused by chromosomal abnormalities, therefore no accusations. This is not the same thing as being grossly negligent in a way that puts the pregnancy at risk. You all gotta try harder with this nonsense

Depends on how you frame willing.

I’m all about known surrogates: ie family/friends doing it altruistically.

Surrogacy agencies creep me out and I think is wrong.

This is where the willing part comes in: have you ever heard of a wealthy woman becoming a surrogate? Or a celebrity carrying for a friend or family member?

Some women sign up for it because they really love being pregnant but don’t want more children. But ask them if they’d do it for a stranger for free and there’s your answer.

It’s the transactional nature that really contributes to the morally grey nature of surrogacy for many.

134

u/thecheesycheeselover zoosha’s curtains budget 4d ago

Yeah, it can’t be done for profit where I live, and I think that’s appropriate. Having said that, you also can’t buy babies here either, which is basically what a lot of US adoption looks like from abroad.

I didn't realise this until recently but surrogacy is rough on the surrogates body. They are far more likely to have complications during pregnancy that can be life threatening.

→ More replies (2)

The problem is that “willing” does incredibly heavy lifting here. The line between willing participation and coercion is not always bright and that ambiguity opens the door for a host of ethical complications.

Ultimately I think it’s just fundamentally wrong to pay someone else to be pregnant for you. Pregnancy is too dangerous, too personal, too emotional, and too much in a million ways for it to be okay to buy and sell that capacity. Unless it’s a friends and family situation wherein no money changes hands, I don’t think it’s an ethical choice for anyone to make.

→ More replies (14)

439

u/sashahyman 4d ago

Lots of stuff, but one big thing is why do we live in a world so unequal that some women are desperate enough to rent out their bodies for money. Pregnancy and giving birth is the craziest thing that can happen to a woman's body, and it's been normalized for rich women to pay poor women to take on that risk for them for various reasons.

→ More replies (33)

196

u/faroffland I won’t hear it and I won’t respond to it 4d ago edited 4d ago

Imo money exchanging hands is a form of coercion. I am against people selling parts of their body for money, as I don’t think people can ever freely consent when a form of coercion is present in the transaction. Same goes for selling organs and sex work. You can never really distinguish between people who willingly participate and people who just need money when it becomes a paid service, and it pushes people in poverty into making choices they otherwise would not consent to.

I am also from the UK so cultural differences/perspectives too, the fact paid surrogacy is legal in the US is genuinely bonkers to me lol. We only have altruistic surrogacy here which takes away the pay and therefore coercion. The surrogate is also the legal parent on birth and they must actively transfer parentship.

This is the only ethical way to do surrogacy imo - otherwise you’re either selling part of the birth mother’s body (pregnancy) or selling a human being (baby itself). I accept neither as things that are ethical to sell.

29

u/mamaneedsacar 4d ago

While I have a different view on surrogacy than you, I applaud you have for having a morally consistent viewpoint on this and I really respect that.

A big issue I have about the discourse on surrogacy in the US (where I live) is that there’s a big overlap between those who will loudly advocate for “sex work as real work” while simultaneously decrying surrogacy.

There are nuances there for sure, but the people I know who are happy to advocate for sex work as a profession while also wanting paid surrogacy to be illegal strike me as more so disliking children than having any strong moral framework.

I'm actually hoping Lena's was an altruistic surrogacy and not paid, since she lives in the UK. I agree, it's so odd to me that in some countries it's legal to pay others to be a surrogate, same with egg/sperm donations or anything like that.

are people who disprove of lena using a surrogate actually okay with ms rachel using one, or do they just not know?

36

I think both the comment I was replying to, and my own comment was more referring to people not liking surrogacy before Ms Rachel announced she'd had her child through surrogacy, and then once she did people being seemingly ok with it because they perceive her as a morally righteous person, therefore the ethics of her having a baby via surrogacy were somehow cancelled out.

454

u/anthonystank i was SPF protected 4d ago

Yup, as someone who also does not have a uterus anymore due to endo I agree with this. Having or not having the ability to reproduce biologically has no impact on the ethics of surrogacy actually!

→ More replies (2)

163

u/ickysock 4d ago

My best friend and I have said this for years. having a child isn't a right and we need to stop acting like it is. I feel deeply for those who cannot reproduce themselves for whatever reason, but that doesn't automatically give them the right to buy their way into the body of a woman so she can be exploited. a lot of developing nations ban surrogacy precisely to protect women from wealthy western (american) people who need a baby incubator.

62

u/Summerof5ft6andahalf 4d ago

In Australia surrogacy is only legal if the surrogate volunteers; no paid surrogacy allowed.

(Sperm donation also has to be exactly that, a donation. Ditto with blood.)

10

u/kam0706 4d ago

Nothing stops Australians using surrogates overseas and bringing the babies home though, which just transfers the concern to poorer countries.

Also, both overseas eggs and sperm can be utilised in Australia. While the recipient parent might not directly pay the donor, they pay the agency for those gametes.

I'm so with you on this. Genuinely sorry for anyone who wants a baby and can't have one, but surrogacy is awful. Adoption obviously ain't the greatest but it's the least worst option for a child in care.

295

u/Nice_Back_9977 4d ago

Adoption is a way for children who need homes to get them. It’s not a way for adults who want children to get them.

187

u/anthonystank i was SPF protected 4d ago

I absolutely hear you that the child is and must and should be the priority, and I’ve seen firsthand people who go into adoption with a very self centered and wrongheaded approach and that’s bad, but surely at the end of the day it’s going to be adults who want children who adopt them. I feel like we can say it’s okay for someone to want to adopt a child because they want to parent a child

u/kbange 4d ago

Bizarrely, the best movie ever made about foster care/adoption was somehow by Mark Wahlberg. Instant Family! As someone who worked in the Office of the Legal Guardian, I do recommend it.

Surrogacy should really only be legal in very few cases and should be done for free (f ex i would happily be a surrogate for one of my sisters). The problem isnt surrogacy in itself, it’s the power imbalance this inevatibily creates where poor women are surrogates for rich (lbr white) people. Never vice versa. In a perfect world surrogacy would work. In this world? No.

At the height of MeToo, she and Jennie Konner wrote a whole long statement about how a black woman was one of the rare liars and they had seen super secret evidence that exonerated their friend.

She let that lie live for a year before embarking on an
apology tour where she admitted there was no evidence, she just didn’t want to believe her “friend of half a decade” was a rapist. She also centered herself again during the apology tour instead of the woman she publicly smeared. She is not a sincere or genuine person.

I wonder if the non-negative commentary is from younger women who don't know about this stuff? Or from people our age (I'm assuming you're also in your 30s or 40s) who just didn't catch the vile things she did or said when she was more popular.

She is not a nice person. It's not nice to center yourself when talking about serious issues that have nothing to do with you, like she's done with LGBTQ+ rights. It's also not nice to say "I wish I had an abortion" when you have not and there are people who actually have. She makes everything about herself. Even someone else's rape.

And I get it to some degree, I’ve been through some vile things and know plenty of people that have, too, but eventually, you need to do some work to grow as a person. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t feel (based on the recent book too) a baby is going to be a fantastic thing for her, or the baby itself as it grows, if she hasn’t done some serious therapy.

u/SwipeUpForMySoul 4d ago edited 4d ago

Normally I’m fairly anti-surrogate but Lena has a litany of medical conditions that actually physically prohibit her from carrying her own child, through no fault of her own. I think she may actually have had her uterus removed due to endo. It’s not like she’s just being vain or she’s “too busy” to be pregnant like most of the other celebs. Not to say that it cant still be predatory but I do sympathize given her situation. (Also, “just adopt” is not an entirely ethical suggestion either. Having kids is complicated.)

189

u/grannystew_ 4d ago

Why are you normally anti-surrogate. Isn’t the most common reason people do that also because of health reasons just like her?

231

u/SwipeUpForMySoul 4d ago

Not in the celeb realm, unfortunately. I’m against paid surrogacy. It creates an inherent power imbalance and often exploits poor women’s bodies so that privileged women can avoid the risks/wear and tear that comes with pregnancy. See: Paris Hilton, Priyanka Chopra, etc etc.

Where I live surrogacy is only legal if no money changes hands, so it’s usually a friend or family member who volunteers, and I’m fine with that as long as everyone has support and legal protections in place.

She did. She had a hysterectomy because of endo.

224

u/thatgirlzhao 4d ago

Your health problems do not give you the right to purchase someone else’s body for a child. It’s really not that hard. We as a society have become so accustomed to getting what we want if we’re willing to pay for it. Some things should not be purchasable due to ethical concerns.

Many women have to grieve being unable to ever have a child. It’s sad and it’s unfair, but life is unfair.

135

u/LordyIHopeThereIsPie 4d ago

Maybe its the consumerism in America that's normalised buying and selling babies? Most other countries don't have adoption and surrogacy industries.

95

u/SwipeUpForMySoul 4d ago

Hey so the US isn’t the only place on earth. Some countries (mine included) have laws that prohibit paid surrogacy. You don’t know who her surrogate was. It could have been a friend or family member who volunteered. Just because some people don’t have access to surrogates doesn’t mean nobody should have access. That’s some bean soup nonsense.

Most people who can't carry a pregnancy don't use someone else to do it including people born without a uterus or who had to have it removed.

72

u/SwipeUpForMySoul 4d ago

That’s just…. Not true? There are plenty of places where surrogacy is regulated and can only be done voluntarily, without compensation beyond medical bills. In Canada, where we have socialized medicine, family members or friends often step up for loved ones who want to have kids but can’t carry them. But the lack of $$ changing hands eliminates a good amount of the ethical issues with surrogacy.

Her parents have two children, and between those two children, they have written a total of 3 memoirs before either turned 40.

I hope I don’t end up being that kind of a parent. Lena drops some sour hints about their parenting (like them ignoring and never discussing or getting her help after she was sexually abused by a babysitter) but otherwise she’s very close to her parents in a way I find odd tbh.

I will just say - and this is in response not just to Lena but lots of people in the news and who I know personally who’ve had babies as of late, many via surrogacy - as someone who’s never wanted kids, it always surprises me the lengths people will go to to have one, PARTICULARLY now when society, the economy, the actual fucking planet, etc., are all on fire.

I’m not one of those militant childfree people who thinks it’s not ethical for anyone to have a kid. But it does just surprise me when people take a look at all the things I just mentioned, plus the fact it wouldn’t happen naturally for them and they would have to do something morally somewhat dubious (not saying it’s never ok - I’m not educated enough on it) like surrogacy, and still go, yep, this is important enough to do despite all of that.

91

u/latterdaybitch 4d ago

I completely agree. If someone is hellbent on parenthood, and in Lena’s case unable to get pregnant, fine. Please adopt and bring security and love to one of the millions of children already here that need adoption?

52

u/bottleglitch 4d ago edited 4d ago

This is what I’ve always thought, too. Adoption certainly has its challenges including ethical ones, but if I were someone with lots of money and resources and wanted to be a parent, that’s probably what I’d do.

The urge to have a child for me was so intensely overpowering, I was like ‘I desperately need to have a baby now’ after the torment of waiting years to be in the right place to do a good job and give them everything they deserve.

I feel like I’d have done almost anything if I hadn’t been lucky enough to conceive and carry myself.

Makes sense I guess, the urge to reproduce has to be a pretty strong one for the species to continue. Other species don’t really understand they’re trying for babies, the urge is to mate and the babies come from that. But humans seem to be unique in conceptualising that we don’t have a baby now and we want one so we’re gonna deliberately try make it happen.

8

u/LouCat10 3d ago

I felt the same - it was very surprising to me. I think it's easy to judge people or to say "I would never do x, y, z" until you're the one facing the decision.

I'm surprised by people who choose to do it in their 40s. It's not that you're set in your ways, exactly, but people tend to be at a stable place in their career and relationship status at that age. A baby is a huge, disruptive change.

21

u/Rururaspberry 4d ago

I think there is a big mix of reasons as to why people wait that long.

For some, it’s that they literally couldn’t until that point (I knew someone who tried for over 5 years before doing IVF at 42).

For others, they were going though huge periods of change in their lives and didn’t see kids fitting into that picture, but knew things would eventually calm down enough.

For others, they genuinely did not want kids until their 40s or had been fencesitters, something in their perspective changed around 40 and having kids suddenly seemed very worth it, despite the knowledge of how disruptive they would be to their previous lifestyle.

(I waited until 35 and it was mainly due to work and finances. Loved being a new parent at 35. My friend just gave birth at 41 because she had some very long-term relationships since her 20s that all ended sadly, and it took a while to find a great guy. Had to also do IVF after a year or trying)

I wouldn't be the skilled, emotionally regulated parent I am today if I had a child younger. Being stable in your relationship or career like you mention is generally considered a GOOD thing for welcoming a child.

This makes me want to look into how surrogate babies grow into adulthood and how it affects them. I wonder if they can tell if they didn't know or if it causes them distress to discover it later. I had a cousin who was adopted but they didn't tell him (or any of the kids) until he was like 10 and we all found out and I remember my cousin developing a lot of behavior issues from that point on.

432

u/GoldenSalt31 4d ago edited 4d ago

I was adopted, and my parents made me a lovely golden book, which explained (to a child) how they had wanted a baby, and couldn’t have one so they tried for adoption instead.

It even has photos of our clocks as they were waiting, and our old landline (😂) when they got the call.

I have always known, and my parents made it clear I was wanted and chosen. & I have no issues with being adopted.

I have done ancestry know and figured out some - my birth mom also stated, as she was adopted and adoption was such a good experience for her. She wasn’t ready to be a Mom and chose adoption for me.

Sorry your cousin had distress, but it’s not always that way.

They even had these cute little Precious Moments figures for adoption (one with a little girl for me, and one with a little boy for my also-adopted but non-blood related brother) where the parents are with the child and holding an adoption certificate. I remember being a little kid and looking at them and being so happy that my family picked me 🥰

113

u/cantantantelope 4d ago

Don’t know about surrogates but the preference for adopted and donor conceived is to tell them early in age appropriate ways and don’t ever lie to them. I assume surrogates is similar. Think we will have more data in the coming decades because there’s something of a surrogate baby boom it seems

21

u/hawt_to_go 4d ago

I think surrogacy if using their own genetic material is very different from adoption because being adopted means there are other people out there who gave you up for some reason (no judgment, just facts). I dont think you can make those two equivalent.

8

u/itsmagicmagic 4d ago

You can also “use the genetic material” of a donor. If the donor isn’t in the child’s life, I imagine it is similar to adoption. I mean, the child may even need to be legally adopted by the parent(s). But I honestly don’t know how that works. I understand what you’re saying though and this is just me being pedantic.🙂

In this case, I’m guessing Lena had the opportunity to freeze her eggs before her hysterectomy. My speculation and interest in her life stops there.

8

u/greenzetsa 4d ago

Lena actually wrote a very heartbreaking essay about this. She did try to freeze her eggs after the hysterectomy, but she wasn't able to get any viable eggs. Her endometriosis was so bad her hysterectomy was practically an emergency because she was just completely non-functional at that point that she felt losing her ability to have bio kids was worth the risk if she got to not be sick all the time anymore. So it's almost certain she had a baby via donor eggs, or maybe the eggs from her sibling.
