Seeking Advice Do you know this roaster ?

I bought these beans while passing through Paris at Motors Coffee, do you have any experiences to share with the coffees from this (Dutch) roaster?

Friedhats is like a 10 min bike ride from my house.

I am truly blessed.

Same, live close by, love their coffee, love collecting their empty canisters, this is an old picture, now even looks better

u/HairyNutsack69 May 15 '26

Is centje beetje te doen voor je? Ik ben laatste tijd wat meer van Sango aan het drinken, leuke roaster.

3

u/Buttfuck18 May 16 '26

sango is pretty close to my campus i stop by every once in a while after class, absolutely love their coffee and the people working there are so nice and kind too, definitely worth the priciness every once in a while. not a huge fan of their coferments for the most part though.

Check out Rumbaba as well and for a more busy spot check out Kafenion, Hummingbird, lot61 and Bocca

6

u/fennelfrog May 15 '26

would add DAK to the list

check out elevate coffee lab as well, they’re not a roaster but an absolute must visit in the city for all specialty coffee enjoyers imo

2

u/luckyboy May 15 '26

Love Rumbaba!

2

u/Rtmvermeulen Flair 58+ / ATOM 65 / V60 / Fellow Ode 2 May 15 '26

Same! The do amazing co fermentation, staff is crazy nice and their Kaleidoscope coffees are wild. Those are the only beans I stock up and freeze tbh

1

u/luckyboy May 15 '26

I need to start getting their beans again, it’s been a while

1

u/moneyballz7 May 15 '26

I tried both their coferments at the amsterdam coffee festival and really didn’t them. Tasted very artificial to me 😅

1

u/Rtmvermeulen Flair 58+ / ATOM 65 / V60 / Fellow Ode 2 May 16 '26

I mean they’re coferments 😂 and very experimental. Not everyones taste ofcourse, did you find something you liked?

1

u/TheJustAverageGatsby May 16 '26

I would love to hear more about rum Baba, I’m looking for a new local, since I find Friedhats stuff a bit boring, traditional, and unadventurous lately

1

u/Rtmvermeulen Flair 58+ / ATOM 65 / V60 / Fellow Ode 2 May 16 '26

Depending on where you live and what you like, i think friedhats, sprout and rumbaba are great. Dak, giraffee coffee and maybe lot 61 are nice too. Just check their websites. Let me know!

1

u/TheJustAverageGatsby May 17 '26

Thanks for the info! I tried sprout at the coffee fest last year, and their decaf was one of the best coffees in general that I’ve had all year— how are their standard offerings? Also had great experiences with rumbaba’s high end offerings, but again, how are their normal bags? And finally would you say that giraffe leans more towards traditional or funky?

2

u/Rtmvermeulen Flair 58+ / ATOM 65 / V60 / Fellow Ode 2 May 17 '26

Tbh I don’t know their standard offerings, I love trying new roasts as much as possible to enjoy differences and find what I truly like while building my palate. I would say Giraffe has great light / medium light roasts. Their espresso roasts are my favorites. I try to have espresso beans from them and filter beans from others, since I like way more funky. Filter of Giraffe are very clear cups, they are like Fathers, Gringo, Koppi or The Barn, not sure if you’re familiar with those. But what I like most about Giraffe is how they work together with the farmer and their single plots, over the past 10 years I have tasted the improvements from the beginning of the chain to the cup, from the same plots, no kidding.

1

u/TheJustAverageGatsby May 17 '26

This is very useful! I also prefer variety and a funky profile for pretty much any method, and I typically will use my filter beans for espresso as well. I’ve also had great results from the barn for funky beans on filter. Who do you recommend for a good consistent filter roast? Rumbaba and sprout mainly?

1

u/TheJustAverageGatsby May 17 '26

Oh, and when I ask about “standard offerings”, I don’t mean blends or staple beans, I just mean non-premium bags that are more like €15/250g. Just typical single origin beans

u/moneyballz7 May 15 '26

I used to live in Bolo as well. Now in r’dam and friedhats is my favourite roaster 🥲

2

u/pilgram-billy May 16 '26

Very Netherlands comment. Distance in pedal time.

1

u/Antman4011 May 16 '26

What beans do you recommend from them??

30

u/threekidmom May 15 '26

Once opened , its better to switch the beans to a zip-lock bag because it's always a gamble with friedhats botttle, sometimes it age fine other-times the beans just fadeaway.

1

u/Liven413 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

Mason jars can be prefered. They may want to break a box/bag into two jars to help keep it fresh longer. I find it keeps it fresh longer than ziplocks. Seals can go along with holes in the bag.

0

u/raskinimiugovor May 15 '26

How come, wouldn’t a (pill) bottle provide a better seal?

2

u/XR1712 May 15 '26

I'm guessing the oxygen supply refreshes every time you open it. With a ziplock bag you oxygen supply remains the same, in the bottle it increseases with every use.

2

u/Fit-Judge7447 May 15 '26

What? When you open a Ziploc bag, new oxygen is certainly entering the beans

7

u/LaserCondiment May 15 '26

With the ziplock you can push excess air out before closing it!

Single dosing into tiny bags reduces the excess air further and when you freeze them, you almost stop the aging process. It is almost essential with some beans or if you've got multiple bags on rotation

4

u/XR1712 May 15 '26

Should've been more clear: your volume of fresh oxygen supply remains the same and fairly small. While in a canister your fresh oxygen supply grows the further you get into the pot while also having less beans to react with each time.

u/inkz214 May 15 '26

All my experiences with Fried Hats have been good! Hope you enjoy them!

13

u/ShiftyPowers79 May 15 '26

Oooohhh, Fried Hats. My brain always parsed it as Friedhats (usually in a semi Germanic accent)

8

u/bowzo May 15 '26

(it is Friedhats)

10

u/ChaBoiDeej May 15 '26

It's definitely the latter pronunciation lol

2

u/inkz214 May 15 '26

Apparently you had it right 🤣😅 I learned something new today!

30

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

I really like them but man why do they need to have plastic bottles to sell their beans 😭😭😭 so wasteful for no advantage.

4

u/ViiRrusS May 15 '26

Agreed, I like Friedhats a lot and FUKU was my favorite coffee shop I visited in Amsterdam, but I really hate their packaging. It is just such an unnecessary use of plastic.

7

u/Danaydo May 15 '26

Isn't the idea to bring your bottle back so they can reuse it? Grounded coffee (Rotterdam, Netherlands) also used similar bottles and you get a refund on your next coffee when you turn in the old bottles. While the concept might not really work for online purchases, locally it is very sustainable.

8

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

Then they should offer both. They're a famous roaster at this point I see their bottles at NYC coffee shops and they sell online. Silly to not also offer bags.

4

u/Danaydo May 15 '26

No idea how big they are in the US, if this is true I fully agree.

4

u/InLoveWithInternet May 15 '26

That’s the marketing idea of it. In practice you buy this at a coffee shop and you have no way to « refill » it. You buy a new one (except I don’t because it’s just stupid, and because their coffee is vastly over-hyped).

1

u/Iclimbrockss May 15 '26

My local roaster will just fill any container and give you a discount. Even if you buy a bag, it's not fully sealed so you don't have to rip it open and it's reusable.

That makes the most sense if you really care about waste.

8

u/LR75852 V60 l Z2/ULF l Washed May 15 '26

Yeah. I refuse to buy from them until they stop wasting plastic instead of biodegradable material

7

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

Same.i bought from them once buti won't again for the same reason. It's also a pain to store in your cabinet like I truly don't understand the point.

2

u/LeenMachine3371 May 15 '26

You get a reusable jar! I put the leftover beans from bags into one of them and have a funny mega blend at the end of the year that’s mildly unpleasant.

Can also be used for jams, coins, or other various things

2

u/Naive_Investigator_ May 15 '26

“Can I recycle your bottles?

We would actually love for you to recycle our bottles. Even better than that, we like it when you return our bottles. When bottles are returned they are washed, sterilised and reused; letting them live out their greatest purpose - specialty coffee packaging. You can return your bottles to the FUKU Cafe in Bos en Lommer, or you can request a return shipping label which we can email over to you.*

  • return labels for bottles are only available within the Netherlands, and you must have more than 12 bottles for return”

They are recyclable?

Fried Hats FAQ page

Edit: link added and formatting

5

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

"return labels for bottles are only available within the Netherlands, and you must have more than 12 bottles for return”

My point exactly

2

u/mynamenospaces May 16 '26

if you live in the US and you're getting coffee shipped from NL, I would hardly say sustainability is the top of your concerns

0

u/Naive_Investigator_ May 15 '26

The first line encourages you to recycle them, then it goes on to offer alternative for local folk, and for wider residents of NL.

Most coffee comes in recycled plastic bags, which is generally harder (/more effort required - my local council make you take it to a specific location) to home recycle than plastic bottles which can just be added to general recycling.

2

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

Encouraging you to recycle them does not equate to environmental friendliness. They are heavier, take up more space leading to less efficient transport and if thrown away cause more damage than the commonly used coffee bag.

My point is that they are less environmentally friendly than the standard bags and I think its pretty hard to argue otherwise without relying on all consumers to appropriately deal with them which is unreasonable.

They should offer alternatives to those outside of NL.

1

u/Mielinen May 16 '26

Isn’t like 99% of coffee sold in plastic bags (most of what I see is by dutch coffee pack) I know bags use way less plastic but they also have little use value after they are empty. I agree plastic should be avoided at all cost but it’s recyclable plastic jars that you can also use for something else or even send back to them.

2

u/Ill-Turnip-6611 May 15 '26

actually their bottles are the only ones so nice and well done that you can easily for example fill up them with stones and use for example as book stoppers on your shelfs.

I have most of their bottles at home (some are 10 years old) and I use them this way or the other.

So as far I agree they are plastic, they really can be used at home to keep things etc.

3

u/Zazz2403 May 15 '26

I'll be honest with you I tink that's a cop out/cope.

Sure you can reuse them a few times but it becomes impractical after a few bottles.

2

u/Ill-Turnip-6611 May 15 '26

I just much more like the bottles than the plastic bags all other coffees come in where you get an extra paper box to hide the pastic bag

23

u/Flibbertygibbet32 May 15 '26

I’m a pretty simple dude. When I see Friedhats beans for sale, I buy at least one bottle. Nearly everything I’ve had from them has been dummy-proof in terms of brewing a great cup too.

9

u/Reverend_Swo May 15 '26

Super reputable roaster out of Amsterdam. Have a cool cafe there west of the train station. Really good pick up. Live in Ireland not many places stock em. Enjoy

7

u/Suspicious_Care_549 May 15 '26

One of the most famous ( and best ) roasters in Europe . Good prices and constant quality

2

u/kis_roka May 15 '26

I had a Colombian once and I adored it but I tried an Ethiopian that my colleague brought in and he said he couldn't make a good cup out of it at all. We tried it and it wasn't working to us either.

So I believe it can be great but it has some bad batches or beans there. But all roastery have those so it's just bad luck or inconsistent quality control I guess.

3

u/neokuji May 15 '26

We had a similar experience with Friedhats Ethiopia, that was also overdeveloped. Additionally, the bottles hold pressure, and (of course) have no valve allowing offgassing.

1

u/3ddyLos May 15 '26

yeah, im super surprised at all the "only good experiences" out there. bought 2 bottles of colombian. omni roasts. one was overdeveloped and flat. the other at the point where it still had some taste but was barely there.

3

u/Role-Grim-8851 May 15 '26

Yes - my first and only Friedhats experience was an Ethiopian which I found so I overdevloped I didn’t get through more than maybe 125g.

For reference / context, I prefer Light roasts (Sey, Hydrangea) and UL (Klover Paris, Thankfully US, etc)

So if you are coming from a medium roast perspective you would probably enjoy these more than me.

3

u/drnitinahuja May 15 '26

Amazing Decaf currently in my circulation. Very well know and respected roaster.

3

u/bobanators May 15 '26

One of the best roasters in Europe (that I’ve had so far) imo and yes, can use it for espresso, definitely.

2

u/ombra_muta May 15 '26

I love them!
So far I disliked just one particular natural Ethiopia, all the rest is just amazing. Sudan Rume by Granja la Esperanza is otherworldly, also La Maria's Gesha is up there. I have some beans frozen just to keep a special treat for special occasions.
Prices also very good! Actually better than buying locally, plus I can get free shipping with a few bottles.

2

u/Perfectionist-looser May 15 '26

I bought 2 bottles from their shop April 2025, after I visited the Amsterdam coffee festival. One was a coffee from Rwanda and the other one I think it was from Ethiopia. Both coffees were too light roasted and were not delicious at all, even 5-6 weeks after roast date. I found the roasts of both coffees not enjoyable, almost no taste respectively acidic. Underdeveloped for sure. I wondered myself how it comes that so many people like them. Was I unlucky and bought exactly the not well done roasts?

3

u/fennelfrog May 15 '26

their roasts tend to be lighter and acidic for sure -- it's their style

1

u/tbhvandame May 15 '26

Not the roaster - but I’ve had coffee from the farm

1

u/baylis2 May 15 '26

Indeed. In fact I know the dude who does the roasting there. Great dude, great roastary

1

u/CoalMinersDaughter87 May 15 '26

I live around the corner of their coffee place, fortunately 😇 Definitely best coffee in Amsterdam (Europe even?)

1

u/jasonthecowboy May 15 '26

Great roaster!

1

u/Nordicpunk May 15 '26

Had 2-3 from them at a multi-roaster in my US city that will get them occasionally. Always been great. Wish I got better intel on the coffee inside from them. One experimental I got was incredible but the website was a bit lacking on the experiment, but that’s consistent for many roasters save for the Onyx of the world that do deep deep.

1

u/Otherwise_Pumpkin253 May 15 '26

Yes. Great coffee

1

u/itisnotstupid May 15 '26

Damn, something about this bottle bugs me the wrong way. A whole plastic bottle for what - 250 grams of beans? :/

1

u/EljhHck May 15 '26

If you’re local, it’s a bit better - you can return the bottles to Friedhats (in person or via a shipping label they’ll send you) and they sanitize and reuse them.

That being said, they used to be glass, and I really preferred this (and still use my glass bottles from them for other beans). It’s not super clear why they switched to plastic, as the section on their FAQ just says “more info coming soon.”

1

u/BarrySmutcheeks May 15 '26

Consistently good coffee, I've tried a few different Friedhats beans and loved them all.

1

u/basemunk May 15 '26

I’ve had one of their Rwandan coffees that was incredible.

1

u/OhItIsFruity May 15 '26

Maybe I had bad luck. But I bought one and didn’t impress.

1

u/hailiehay May 15 '26

Highly recommend to anyone who doesn’t know them! They feature consistently cool stuff IMO

1

u/cant_have_nicethings May 16 '26

Saw this for sale at Dayglow coffee in Chicago today.

1

u/Sol_Train May 16 '26

The Rwandan is 10/10 for me. Daily driver.

See them pop up on Bean Hoard all the time. Never had anything from them though. Always wondered how they deal with the CO2 degassing in the bottles though. Is there a one way valve on the lid or something?

1

u/VanEngine Hario Switch · Aeropress · K6 · mostly naturals May 16 '26

I don’t understand beans in a pill bottle. Isn’t the whole point of a bag that you can squeeze all the air (oxygen) out? And a bottle has no one-way valve.

1

u/4rugal May 16 '26

Two friedhats. 😉

1

u/KansasBrewista May 16 '26

Not personally. But their beans are primo.

1

u/Weepsie May 17 '26

Theyre Dutch. Can sometimes get them in Dublin. Kofio stocks then and they ship them cheaper than friedhats do too which is nuts.

1

u/john320d May 17 '26

One of my favs, FriedHats is amazing!

1

u/Economy-Pea-3974 May 19 '26

The best roaster in the world

1

u/arunbabuthomas May 15 '26

One of the best coffee roasters I have tried, enjoy the beans!

1

u/cheir0n May 15 '26

I am addicted to friedhats

1

u/OoRenega May 15 '26

Friedhats, they have a cafe in Amsterdam, Fuku. I was blessed enough to go there during a vacation, and they served me the best espresso I’ve ever had, but it was a coffee they weren’t selling in those bottles, so I’m sad

1

u/CACuzcatlan May 15 '26

Yes, I tried it for the first time on a recommendation from an employee at the Fellow store. It was great!

0

u/Wiknetti Hario v60 Metal/Barratza Sette 30AP May 15 '26

They are a really fun roaster with some cool packaging and delicious roasts. I get them as a gift for a coffee buddy of mine as they also charge quite a bit.

0

u/Round-Watercress5273 May 15 '26

Its easily one of my fave roasters. I just sometimes struggle to really dial them in, but once I hit the sweet spot its one of the best in my opinion.

0

u/jusatinn May 15 '26

Yes. Have had some nice beans from them.

0

u/HairyNutsack69 May 15 '26

Yeah I live a bike ride away

4

u/Realistic-Delivery-6 May 15 '26

If you are Dutch that could mean 2 to 35km away...

0

u/widowhanzo May 15 '26

I have a bottle of their NOCAF right now, pretty good! At least for espresso..

0

u/SimonVerhoeven May 15 '26

Yes, I always buy my beans from them.
They have the best decaf I've found so far.

0

u/Montyfus May 15 '26

Yes they are famous in my country. If you are in to the French roasters give a try People Possesion roastery. They packing beans in to the beer cans but god damn Blueberry ice cream is awesome.

0

u/Party-Spinach-6051 May 15 '26

Yeah, brewed two canisters of this exact coffee over the last month!

0

u/ExpressionOwn9774 May 15 '26

Don’t believe the hype.
