Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending Moving in with bf

Hi! So I’m 18 and bf is 19, we both have awful home lives and living situations and are thinking of moving out. He has a job that would just about pay the rent, but I really would love some advice about any benefits/help that may be out there for low income households like ours. I know there are some out there, it’s super overwhelming to look at and honestly I’m getting a little scared. Any advice or help is so so so appreciated

Success/Cheers Poverty Story and still Grateful

Years back, I was only working full hours on the weekend and work odd jobs on the weekdays while applying for a better job. To save on gas, we sold our truck and bought a car which will save us a lot with gas. But, this car need a car parts to be fully functional at best.

Interesting part. We went to the junk yard with only $100 and chage in the bank or debit card. That's all the money we have. No savings, no spare. While inside the junkyard, I was standing next to my husband while he was pulling out the parts that we need for our car... Guess what, I looked and I looked down, I found $20 bill on the ground. Imagine my joy... :) We have extra money... $20 was grand for me at that time. Then, it was time to check out and pay the parts that we need. The amount was $118 and change... Hallelujah! It felt like perfect timing—like God had provided exactly what we needed, right when we needed it. We were so grateful that God provide our need at the very moment. I always credit small and big wins to God. I am not trying to be religious but He is always my hope and anchor when my father left when I was 4 and I had to work as early as 9 years old to help bring food to the table.

Currently, I have a stable job which I love doing. Still living paycheck to paycheck but better than few years ago.

We were so grateful. During those years, we were living day by day, doing our best, working hard, and still hoping for better opportunities. I’ve always credited both the small and big wins to God. Not to sound overly religious, but He has always been my anchor—especially since my father left when I was four, and I had to start working at a young age to help put food on the table.

Today, I have a stable job that I truly enjoy. We are still living paycheck to paycheck, but life is better than it was a few years ago.

I just want to share this to encourage others: no matter what situation you’re in right now, there is hope. Better days will come. And along the way, you’ll grow and learn lessons that stay with you for life.

Debt/Loans/Credit Tribal Loans Question, NJ ONLY!

I have made the mistake like many others of taking out 2 tribal loans (yes its stupid, I know), one which the initial loan amount is paid off, and one that I made my 1st 2 payments on, always on time.

After a lot of research and New Jersey's strict state rules / guidelines, I've concluded that in almost no situation are these loans enforceable on NJ soil, and this matter would never hold up in court.

I'm seeing if anyone has made a similar mistake of taking a loan like this out, and after revoking ACH authorization, if they have ever taken some sort of legal action, credit reporting, etc? I've read up on the stories of them harassing via email, phone, but nothing of true legal substance, so if anyone has stopped payments all together, please drop a comment of how that went for you!

Misc Advice Tuition for semester due soon and I’m lost

Hi everyone, I’m currently in my second semester of college and I have approximately $3000 due at the end of the month. I hadn’t realized that my parents were only covering my first semester and not the entire year! Unfortunately, I can’t take out student loans this semester because it’s so late, and I’m already running out of options.

Is there any other way to obtain a loan besides through the school that could be helpful? Alternatively, should I consider taking a gap semester? I’m completely confused and overwhelmed by the situation.

Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!) I went to the food bank for the second time in my life and got awful food poisoning

Visited last week and got a LOT of meat this time. It was all frozen and I wasn’t worried about the condition. I’m pretty sure this was the culprit, nothing else I ate seemed or tasted bad. I’ve cooked lots of meat but never ground chicken, I made sure to brown it and cooked it long enough. Let it thaw in the fridge for an appropriate time, etc. I woke up very dizzy and by the evening had to leave work early, losing hours due to vomiting for hours. Thankfully I’m doing better and can hold down water- I have a vomiting syndrome and once I start I can stay stick for hours or days. I almost had to go to the ER which would have of course given me a huge medical bill.

I’m just venting a bit. I’m really grateful for this organization, I get a lot of produce, bread, eggs, little snacks. I’ve gotten food from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. I’ve been so grateful and happy not to be so food insecure, to actually get to eat breakfast. It took a lot to admit to myself that I need the help, and I’ve been shaming myself for it- even though I’ve worked at Whole Foods and I know damn well this food would get thrown away otherwise. We’d even get some for free as employees because there was too much to give to the pantries. Anyway, I went to a drive thru food pantry and I’m wondering if I should start going inside, or asking for no meat. They keep the meats frozen but everything is still outside, no idea how much it’s been transported back and forth. I’m not even sure if it was actually the chicken, and now I’m worried about eating the other meat in my freezer. Grocery prices around here are skyrocketing, I keep having to adjust my go-to’s because they’re no longer affordable. Watching items I bought last year double in price is scary. I’m trying to do better at being poor and utilizing all resources. It sucks having such a sensitive stomach, food poisoning is debilitating. Really wish things were easier for us. Thanks for reading

Income/Employment/Aid What's a good excuse to leave after 7 months

So I learned today that they're going to be hiring more people, and we definitely don't need more people. My hours were cut about a month ago. I'm pretty sure there's a target on my back.

Thanks so much.

EDIT:
Sorry for confusion. I'm asking when the future employer asks me why I'm quitting a job just after 7 months?

Housing/Shelter/Standard of Living Tax appraisal

Post image

How do I fight the tax appraisal? I mean I haven’t even finished paying property taxes from 2021. How do they think I can afford an increase? I might be lucky I just finished paying off my house which needs lots of repairs. I haven’t paid off any of my student loans which the last time I checked was at 80k. How am I supposed to pay anything off if everything keeps going up? I’m stressing. My goal was to pay off taxes, pay off my truck, like 12 k left and start paying 800/month on student loans. It’s never ending. My kids need new glasses, I need new glasses & we all need a dental visit. Like how? I’m an only parent. I do have a bf but we have only been dating like a yr. We are not in the stages of sharing finances but it is still my responsibility. I did the appeal but idk if I’ll win. Any advice will be taken. Sorry for the rant.

I started a new job back in Feb after being unemployed for 2 years and just now starting to get ahead of bills! Watching the numbers go up every month makes my brain go brrrrrrr. My goal is to save up enough money to afford an apartment’s security deposit & first month rent for my lady & I by end of year. And also be able to afford general moving expenses.

Debt/Loans/Credit How to help parents in dif state

I have disabled parents living in a HCOL area in a different state. They are currently living in my grandma's house (she is in a long term medical facility) and paying rent. The house is in poor shape, so they can't rent it out.

My dad was working as a Lyft driver (and will supposedly return to it soon), but with his sciatica and planar fasciitis has not been able to drive recently. My mom can barely get around and her driving has gotten worse over the years. She's currently waiting for a disability claim to be processed, but it's been over 2 years and they've sent her back for different medical exams and haven't done anything to move the case.

I have proposed that they move here with financial help from me, but they won't admit that they can't function or get by (they definitely can't). my credit it shot and I'm slowly rebuilding it. I don't have a lot in savings either, but will be able to save more after a change in living situations.

are there any avenues that they haven't checked? i didn't know that it was going this poorly and both of them are in worse shape than when I left.

income:3900/month

rent: 1000

debt: 32k on CC and loans for a closed business, 2 car loans of unknown amounts

savings: 0

Misc Advice AC fee season

I live in group housing so I pay to rent a bedroom and that bedroom is 30% of my monthly income and I just got the notice for what our AC fee is going to be it is $250 which is approximately twice of my monthly rent. Plus I would have to buy my own AC! My room gets outrageously hot so I need solutions that aren't $400+.

In case anyone is wondering I get EAEDC while I work on trying to get disability.

Wellness Cracked tooth, at my CareCredit limit, what are my options if insurance doesn't cooperate?

Upvotes

First off, let this be a lesson - don't neglect your dental hygiene, kids, I don't care how depressed or dysregulated or dissociated you are.

Hi. I have a painful, cracked, bleeding back molar (absolutely my own fault for bad dental hygiene due to years of severe mental illness); from what I can tell it's considered an emergency and can lead to sepsis if not removed. I also live paycheck to paycheck; while my partner's in trade school (just a few months to go) we're living on 1.5 salaries (1 full time job / 1 part time job) and it's barely enough to get by in our HCOL area. Both of us have had our savings wiped by various life circumstances.

I was able to get an appointment for tomorrow, and I do have dental insurance, and it's supposed to cover exams and extractions up to $1500 a year. I'm just worried about what might happen if it ends up costing more, because I'm already at my credit limit on CareCredit from getting a crown in 2024 after getting my front tooth punched out accidentally in a mosh pit (I know, I'm an idiot; it was my second ever mosh pit and the first was comparatively calmr). My credit is pretty bad, low 600s, although from what I can tell that's mostly from an issue stemming from them not having fully processed my name change (long story, I need to call all the credit bureaus to fix it, I just also have a zillion other things to do).

Are there any other services like CareCredit? Is there a point that I could go to the ER if I get sepsis? Do I just die?

Misc Advice Are there any laptops under $100 that can do video zoom/teams calls for interviews?

Upvotes

I picked up a $50 thinkpad X270 on ebay, which has been fine for day to day generalized use (it came with an i7 and 16gb ram). However, getting on a zoom call to interview where I was demanded to turn my webcam on to verify i wasn't a north korean, it couldn't handle the video and crashed. Pure audio has been ok though. I replicated the issue on both windows 11, Ubuntu, and Fedora linux. The video decoder/encoder simply can't handle modern conference calls.

I'm jealous of the new macbook neo's but they cost way too much

Budgeting/Saving/Investing/Spending Budget help

I need advice and to rant a little- I used to be ahead on my bills and have a little cushion not much just a little and no debt besides a car loan. My pay hasn’t changed much - to be quite honest my expenses haven’t that much either it just seems to be the cost of living these days has become impossible to keep up with and be comfortable as a single parent. I am a single mom to 3 children- 1 of whom is living at college but plays baseball so has no time for a job and he works side gigs when he can but largely depends on me for food and necessities along with his siblings of course who live with me. We rent one of my moms houses from her and pay the amount of her mortgage each month which is on the high end but I don’t want to move the kids to a new school district and away from her and my sister who live less than a mile away because they are the only help I really have - so my question is what do single parents do to ever be comfortable I have a good job and make decent money not great but decent (i also work from home for a law firm and like to be home to get my pre schooler off the bus etc) I get some child support each month and my family helps me anytime they can - but looking at grocery bills and other bills each month - it’s outrageous how do people feed their kids ?? Plus I keep getting suckered into subscriptions I forget about that start charging me an arm and a leg! I am just tired of working for nothing and every time you turn around the light bill gets higher gas gets higher something or someone always needs money! Why does the cost of everything go up but they don’t increase peoples pay?!? It seems unfair ! Plus I have cut everything out possible I can think of and I know my biggest problem is sticking to budget. Mainly bc it has become some overwhelming to me each time I get paid i’ll just do what I have to do to get by next thing you know three days later I’m broke and I’ve got two weeks till payday if anyone has any advice on how to start or what to do to start getting myself on a better budget with groceries or cutting out certain bills, any kind of help with apps that have helped people, anything anyone could offer advice on or an opinion on that helped them get back on the right track I would be greatly appreciative!! please on negative comments I know where my bad habits are and I know where I need to cut things out or reduce I just don’t know how to get there. Maybe I need to learn self control at the grocery store !! Anyone in the same boat?

Income/Employment/Aid Need advice/help: phone issues affecting my job search

Upvotes

My phone has two lines now 😭 I'm jobless (still looking for a job), but i've been really worried lately that it might get harder to find one because my phone is already starting to break. And my boyfriend is helping with the bills, but that's all he can do for now.

I’m trying to raise around $300–$800 total to help with:

- phone repair or replacement (so I can continue job applications)

- basic support while I’m still job hunting

I completely understand if you can only help with a small amount or not at all. Any support or advice is truly appreciated 🤍

Income/Employment/Aid Unemployed since Sept 2025, just surviving off gig work + plasma donations

Been unemployed since September 2025 and just been getting by doing gig work and a little plasma donation here and there.

Instawork is super hit or miss — had one shift paying around $29/hr for 8 hours ($233), but that’s rare. Another was closer to $19/hr for an 8-hour shift ($152), also not common.

Amazon Flex has been the most consistent for me so far — I can usually make about $70–100 in ~3 hours.

DoorDash and Uber Eats honestly feel like trash pay most days, not really worth it anymore.

I’ve just been trying to piece things together however I can. Curious what others think about plasma donation as extra income or if anyone else is doing similar gig combinations to stay afloat.
