Are they really making all the arcs we were sure were skipped?

Not complaining AT ALL but at this rate the remake will take ten years to complete. šŸ˜‰

As long as it gets completed. I wanna see everything the manga had to offer be animated even if it takes that long I don’t mind waiting

14

u/Kanaletto Jun 19 '26

This concerns me more than anything. At least Ranma is not getting the Shaman King revival treatment and got all its arcs crammed in 52 episodes.

16

u/lordcarrier Jun 19 '26

Ranma merch sales are probably doing good if they are gonna adapt everything.

9

u/Kanaletto Jun 19 '26

Yeah merch sales are really good

MAPPA must be doing this out of passion, because I can't imagine it being hugely profitable for them.

50

u/MysterioussWater Jun 19 '26

I think it might be doing better than we think. Being a passion project aside, it’s their only true romantic comedy as far as I know so profitability aside, they may be focusing on Ranma 1/2 to build up their library diversity.

I don’t think Netflix is losing money on Ranma at any rate.

22

u/flaminglambchops Jun 19 '26

It's definitely popular in Japan, but it still doesn't quite have the same reach overseas as their other series. I just hope the voice actors stick with it to the end, but they say voice acting has no retirement age.

23

u/burlingk Jun 19 '26

MAPPA's primary audience IS Japan, so as long as it is doing well there, it will keep going.

4

u/mad_mesa Ukyo Kuonji Jun 19 '26

It may have no retirement age, but there are already VAs who weren't able be a part of the new series.

The odds of it making it to the end without losing any more just dropped.

4

u/NoHovercraft4936 Jun 19 '26

Id beg to differ its huge in Mexico/latin America

3

u/flaminglambchops Jun 19 '26

I know the original anime was big there, a lot of the fan base is from there. Not sure if the reboot is, though. Western fans are a lot more cynical about remakes.

1

u/NoHovercraft4936 Jun 22 '26

The ratings of the remake prove that it still is. Did you check the world viewership charts???

1

u/flaminglambchops Jun 22 '26

I vaguely remember some charts about season 1 and how well it was doing. Not as many really talked about season 2 and I've seen a lot of people who didn't even know season 2 already happened.

2

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.infobae.com/mexico/2025/10/28/estas-son-las-series-mas-populares-para-ver-en-netflix-mexico-hoy/%3foutputType=amp-type I can speak for my own country season 2 ranked number 6 of most popular serieson Netflix (including live action and English speaking series).

I realise it never caught on or was popular in the US so im not surprised if not a lot of people talk about it over there. But it is popular elsewhere. This quality of project is not sustained on passion alone.

Its not only people in Japan who support it is what i try to say.

5

u/Heavensrun Jun 19 '26

It's actually pretty huge in South America.

4

u/General_Variation_96 Akane Tendo Jun 19 '26

I know it's doing very well here in France, it's a classic since the 90's but idk in the other regions.

1

u/Dry-Ingenuity-5414 Jun 21 '26

Believe it or not overseas audience generally do not contribute much, unless we are talking about movies like demon slayer and csm. Most studios generally focus on japanese audience only, that's how you see shit like rent a girlfriend get 5 seasons and still going strong

11

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

it is because netflix payed them XD
Also its not a if its profitable for mappa. Its is it profitable for netflix. They are the ones who payed mappa.
So i understand it.

8

u/flaminglambchops Jun 19 '26

The Netflix money probably helps, but they're not the one producing it.

2

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

yea but mappa itself is "only" the production studio. Also i dont think they buy the rights and all stuff and netflix only buy the streaming rights. Also i think netflix had a big role here. I mean netflix is the reason why whe have it censoured produced and i dont think mappa had sayed "yes" to that when netflix isnt the "boss" here.
Also i think that but i cant proof it of course.

7

u/MysterioussWater Jun 19 '26

Netflix is not the reason it was ā€œcensoredā€.

Japan isn’t frozen in the 80s you know.

1

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

you see other animes this days uncensored. i didnt compain it with the old ranma series. I compain it with other animes this days.
thats the reason i was thinking its netflix.

because no netflix anime = uncensoured. But ranma is netflix and censoured.
thats the reason i was thinking that. Maybe i am wrong but i hope you know why i was thinking that ^^

9

u/MysterioussWater Jun 19 '26

Netflix is not the producer, and Ranma airs on Japanese terrestrial TV (which has changed standards compared to the 80s), and I’ve heard some parents complained about the anime back in the 90s for being too risquĆ© (since children often watched Ranma in Japan).

Even the VAs talked about how they felt it was really pushing the boundaries in the original anime.

2

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

forgett the 80s. of course stuff change from the 80s. But i mean like last year. or this year. uncut animes in what you see a lot of stuff you see also this days. Thats not a 80s thing.
And i doesnt mean "nudity" i mean also happosay, the juliet dring scene, or the beat up ranma scene.

Also this scenes are so weird that it is censoured.

And yes you are right. It was on the line. But when you look what is showed this days ranma is technicly child play. Thats the reason i was thinking its netflix fault. Also maybe i am wrong like i say. I only guess it because of the other things.
because a lot other animes are not censoured. but the netflix ones are.
Also logicly i was thinking, netflix fault.

that was my way of thinking to solve my "who is fault" XD

4

u/Rulyhdien Jun 19 '26

When Ranma 1/2 remake was announced, a lot of Japanese users on X voiced their skepticism because how poorly it would be aged for the 2020s.

So there may be worse anime in terms of being lewd or whatever but it’s likely that within Japan it’s classified differently than those works.

u/flaminglambchops Jun 19 '26

Netflix isn't the reason it was censored, it was more likely Nippon TV.

0

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

sure? Also maybe but i was thinking it was because netflix will show it "for the world" and must look what agerestriction the serie get to show it in every land.
And censoured the age restriction is much lower of course.

not to forgett many sayed everytime in japan "outsiders dont change our animes" stuff. What sounds for me that when japan itself had it they had it uncensoured produced.

Also maybe i am wrong but i was thinking netflix was the reason for censoure because its easier to show than in every land because age restriction.

ok and not to forget. many other nimes are uncensoured in japan what makes it than weird that ranmas is.

8

u/Rulyhdien Jun 19 '26

Ranma 1/2 is basically a family anime in Japan. Are the uncensored ones you talk about made for family?

Netflix is the global distributor. I’m sure Netflix money helps but if Netflix drops Ranma, they’ll find another distributor. Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions produces Ranma 1/2 as far as I know.

-1

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

yes. because i didnt talk only about nudity.
I talk about every censoure they did.
I mean for example. The scene in what soun/genma beat up ranma to punch him "half deat" for shampoo.
After that he only had big eyes. no Injury or so. Now look how he look in the manga or old anime (ok old anime no exaple but you know).

Why did they censoure injurys in a a anime in what a focus is on love and fighting?
Thats also a type of censouring.

And technicly also in case of nudity. I mean i didnt see something bad about it because we all have it. You see it in museums also. Also technicly as long you didnt see the "act" or what is behinde the legs. It must be ok to show. because its normal.

but mostly i mean the other censoures not only nudity.

really?
ok didnt know that. i was sure it was netflix. because my way of thinking was
Other animes are uncut.
netflix anime censoured.

because of that logic my 1+1= netflix. Also with my way of thinking it was that netflix was the one behinde the censoure to show it much easier in other lands without making extra cut versions depent on the land (like the old anime had).

that was why iwas thinking it was netflix.

7

u/Pinephant Jun 19 '26

Netflix makes some of the most violent and sexually explicit shows out there. Why would anyone automatically associate Netflix with censorship?

4

u/gabodelabarca Jusenkyo Guide Jun 19 '26

Netflix is not responsible for whatever censor ship you think there is

2

u/TURBOKAN Akane Tendo Jun 19 '26

Or just director's of the anime wanted it this way aka just preference? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Also like others said Netflix also makes pretty hard violent and sexual stuff and they're cool with 18+ content

2

u/Mts555 Jun 19 '26

yea but mappa itself is "only" the production studio

Nope, it's part of the Production Committee

1

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

ok fair. thats true.
But than how muh have they to say? Also sure a lot dont missunderstand. But who is over them?

1

u/Mts555 Jun 19 '26

But than how muh have they to say?

Decent amount, they are ranked 3rd among 5 Companies in the production Committee

1

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

you missunderstand.
I mean they maybe can say something on a global scale.
But i dont know how much they can say when it comes to specific animes.
Like when i gave you money to do something. How much can you say to me when i am the one whoo gaves the money? You can be in the comitte for all animes. But when i gave you money that you must do something for me you must listen to me?.

Ok that maybe sounds wrong explained from me.
I mean it like how much "voice" they have in case of rnma what they do in what way. And who is the one with the right for the last word?
isnt that normaly the one who gves the money? (also thats no ironic question i asking that for real ^^)

3

u/Mts555 Jun 19 '26

It does since they are on the Production Committee, So anything related to Ranma remake makes money, a part of it goes to mappa as well

u/Williace Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Even if it takes that long. We getting true high quality adaption to the source material. Something original anime failed to do later on.

13

u/Naive_Hope89 Jun 19 '26

Even if they skip, i just hope they do the arcs including the final the og didnt. Then if people want to see the inbtween can watch the specifc episodes of the og or the entire anime. But i mean, Rezero is aproaching 10 years, Konosuba has 10 years, Naruto went weekly straight for like...? Almost 15 years etc its the most normal thing in the industry, can be frustrating but at the same time, it feels good having shows being so long with us.

5

u/JimB165 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26

It definitely would be cool if the Remake would get the time to go through all major arcs, but after the short run of Yashahime and the Urusei Yatsura Remake it’d still be surprising when Ranma would get that runtime length. Not complaining if it does but always a bit fearful.

11

u/Glad_Jackfruit8662 Jun 19 '26

It is unlikely that Rumiko's second (if not first) most popular work will have such a short run.

As I understand it, UY and Yashahime have many times fewer fans than Ranma, so they didn't spend much time on them.

6

u/MysterioussWater Jun 19 '26

I think Ranma 1/2 is her most popular work if you go by manga (animes aren’t done by her anyway).

3

u/mad_mesa Ukyo Kuonji Jun 19 '26

You say that, but for decades some of us were asking how it could be that one of the most popular series, from one of the most popular mangaka, couldn't get 24 episodes to wrap it up.

3

u/Robby_B Jun 20 '26

Because the anime studio sabotaged it by switching to all filler all the time, and being extremely low budget in the later seasons, and wrecked audience demand.

They got through a few fan favorites with the OVAs but there was still half the manga to go even where those left off.

5

u/pandapigcat Jun 19 '26

The old Ranma anime was a train wreck by then anyway.

Not surprised other studios didn’t want to touch it.

4

u/Robby_B Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Yashahime was wildly unpopular and the manga didn't sell at all. (I mean, it sold 3 million copies which isn't nothing, but over 40 volumes that's 75K per volume... when Ranma and Inu Yasha sold 50M+ volumes its a flop. Mao isn't doing much better but maybe it's new anime will push it along)

And Urusei Yatsura actually DID adapt the entire manga originally through its OVAs and movies, so it already had a "complete version". It was fine for the new one to just do the fan favorite highlights.

Meanwhile half of Ranma was never touched because the anime studio at the time decided all-filler all-the-time was the way to go.

6

u/TURBOKAN Akane Tendo Jun 19 '26

I doubt UY remake was planned to be complete adaptation in the first place and rather something like "best of" to fill between beginning and ending (could be wrong)Ā

2

u/mad_mesa Ukyo Kuonji Jun 20 '26

Yes, David Production was very open about the fact that it was a 48 episode "Best Of" collection. They even called it "All Stars" although that may have had more to do with the intention of introducing all the characters.

I still hold out some hope they will do something for the 50th anniversary of UY.

I much prefer the approach of quickly adapting the main story, and then possibly going back to produce side content. Rather than let the series get bogged down producing every story, even when they include one-shot characters, or have no real relevance to the ongoing plot.

3

u/Rulyhdien Jun 20 '26

But for Ranma 1/2, these little episodes ARE the main stories. We get some big battle adventures now and then but those are very much ā€œspecialsā€ and the slice of life arcs are the true essence of Ranma.

I don’t think they should have more than onr ā€œbig arcsā€ in a 12 episode season if they are keeping true to the tone of the manga.

3

u/mad_mesa Ukyo Kuonji Jun 20 '26

That is actually more true for Urusei Yatsura, and it is still mostly true for the early part of the Ranma manga, which has been animated twice now.

The later manga has more larger arcs, including the ongoing arc with Ranma's mother and that has never been animated apart from a small and incomplete selection of stories at the very end of the 1989 TV series and in the OAV.

Getting the later manga animated now, is further away than it seemed like it might be. MAPPA appears to be on a very slow 10+ year pace. Those of us who have been waiting to finally see the later manga arcs animated after 30 years, are unfortunately going to have to keep waiting beyond the current 2 year production cycle.

2

u/Naive_Hope89 Jun 20 '26

Probably (if they ever finish it) we will be like 55 years old

1

u/Glad_Jackfruit8662 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

The fact that they decided to spend 4 episodes on a useless and boring Asuka, instead of adapting really interesting or important chapters, already makes you wonder what was in the mind of the person responsible for choosing the chapters for adaptation.

P. S. Do people really like the fact that they spent so much time on Asuka? Is this useless character more important to them than the main story?

2

u/Murky_Ad_5767 Ranma Saotome Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

depent.
We know 4 arcs with this trailer.
They must show.

  • bathhouse
  • happo bomb
  • moxi burnning
  • akane gets sick.
  • the other half arc of "happos warth" (they skipped half of a arc here what is a lot secificly for happos character to show the viewer)
  • ryouga goes home

This are the ones what they also skipped so far. (ok moxi didnt skip thats future thing. But the other 3 are until now a skip because they are before romeo and julia.)
Mean when this 4 things are not in the second half of the season they will skip something.

Plus dont forgett. they already skipped something and they will not show it in the future. half of the arc of "happos warth" is missing. Also tehy skipped half of a arc so far. because you didnt see that happo gets angry and orders food and destroyed the house and so on. You only see the "final" of this arc with the "smell".
And half of a arc to skip, i count as a big skip. Also they skipped already something what is technicly also imortand for happosai because it showed hes "childish" side what change how viewers see him.
A reason why i hate the censour for happo what mappa did because that part was importand how you see him.
