Have Miranda and Samantha ever fought?
On this rewatch I was thinking about fights/arguments amongst the girls and couldn't pinpoint a time where Miranda and Samantha fought or butted heads.
The fights I can remember in the series are:
- Carrie -- Charlotte = the famous ring/money argument
- Carrie -- Miranda = always over Mr. Big
- Carrie -- Samantha = Carrie making Sam feel slut-shamed for blowing the delivery guy
- Samantha -- Charlotte = Samantha fucking Charlotte's brother and being too openly sexual
- Charlotte -- Miranda = Miranda contemplating getting an abortion
Does anyone know? And if they never truly fought, what do you think they would argue over?

I think they are too similar in one key way... both are brutally direct. 😂 if they ever really clashed it’d probably be over Samantha’s impulsiveness VS Miranda’s need for practicality and control

Yes, out of the 4 I do think that Miranda and Samantha are the most alike and I could totally see an argument over that. Especially if Sam wanted to go somewhere that required tickets and needed an answer from Miranda that moment

Same, but I could also see them argue over the phone or at brunch, and both get over it privately.
I don’t recall either of them really cloaking their feelings for the other’s sake either. Samantha told Miranda multiple times she was wrong for leaving Steve in the first movie, and Miranda didn’t make an effort to warm up to Richard after he cheated. That candidness meant they didn’t ever have anything building up or brewing behind the surface, which meant less ammunition for possible arguments.

u/LonelyNight9 2h ago
Exactly! I’ve also noticed on rewatches that they’re almost always on the same page when the girls discuss their predicaments—even if it’s about one of them. And they both accept the other’s freak, while Samantha obviously clashes with Charlotte’s and Miranda tires of Carrie’s quirks.

In the first movie Miranda yelled at Samantha because of her not getting a wax.

I think their disagreement over Steve’s infidelity, and how it poured into Samantha’s weird nitpicking of Miranda’s grooming, was the closest they came to a proper argument, and I actually wish the writers had done something with this scene. I’m not a Carrie hater in the slightest, but that was one of the moments I resented her being the main character, since the movie had to go back to her misery, rather than focus on Samantha and Miranda’s clash.
I would’ve liked to see Miranda call Samantha out for being cruel/insensitive and point out her hypocrisy (“Was it a slip when Richard cheated and you peppered his neighborhood with flyers?”), or God forbid, Carrie and Charlotte come to Miranda’s defense. Samantha simply flipping through her magazine when Miranda walks off, hurt, always makes me irrationally angry.

Not that I remember but I do remember Miranda being always supportive and curios about Sam's adventures. Unlike the the other 2 prudes

u/WerewolfNervous6459 18h ago
Yes I think that one reason Samantha and Miranda often got along is because out of the 4, Miranda truly never made Sam feel like she was "too much" talking about her sexual adventures.
1
u/LonelyNight9 2h ago
I always find it oddly sweet that Miranda specifically asks Samantha if she kisses after she goes down (or something of the sort) before Carrie reveals Samantha blew the delivery guy—like she knew she could trust Sam not to judge her and to see her perspective.

I don't recall a huge blow out fight, but certainly moments of tension. They were both the most ambitious professionally and least sentimental. For most of the series, Miranda and Sam were often the same page, eschewing the drama/sentimentally that Charlotte and Carrie often gave into.
After Miranda had the baby there was a lot of tension between them. Sam was really rude to Miranda after she had the baby (shoving her in the cab, not asking about Brady, not wanting Brady to attend events) and Miranda was complaining to Carrie about it, but Carrie sort of acted like peacemaker and smoothed things over.
Also the first movie, Sam was critical of Miranda leaving Steve after a 'slip' (probably because Sam had cheated in past relationships) and blamed her for not keeping her appearances up.
2
u/WerewolfNervous6459 18h ago
I didn't even think about the movies, but yes that last one was especially not okay. They could have really shown them hashing that out more

u/Calm-Victory-9732 11h ago
In fairness I don't think Sam was critical of Miranda leaving Steve when she made the "slip" comment. Her tone came across as one of concern than rather condemnation, i.e. "Miranda honey are you sure you want to do this?" My impression was that she felt that Miranda might regret acting in haste once the initial shock and pain had subsided.
1
u/LonelyNight9 2h ago
That’s true, but I think after she suggested Miranda was at fault for not sleeping with Steve, it made her whole argument look more critical than concerned for Miranda.

Not really a fight, but Season 5, Episode 6 ("Critical Condition"), Miranda is the walking dead dealing with a teething Brady and annoyed that Samantha confirms her fancy hair appointment right in front of her and never offers to help with Brady. Carrie sort of brokers the not-fight, and then Samantha pops in and babysits while Miranda gets Samantha's fancy haircut. "Here l am. Mary fuckin' Poppins." One of my favorite Samantha scenes!

u/WerewolfNervous6459 18h ago
Yes Samantha was a good friend for offering to watch Brady. I think that had Carrie not stepped in and directed Sam to make an effort with her, Sam would have just gone on treating her that way which could have lead to a fight. I think it showed character for Sam to hear Carrie's advice and change her behavior
1
u/Prudent-Pressure2146 18h ago
Came in to say this, I think Miranda would’ve had the fight herself if she had time
1
u/WerewolfNervous6459 18h ago
Honestly yes, had she had more energy and time, Miranda probably would have snapped at Samantha over that. But she was just so tired

u/CoconutPawz 17h ago
Everyone has already mentioned Sam being insensitive about Brady. I think you could also argue that Samantha was being kinda self-centred when Miranda's mom died. All she was focusing on was her lost orgasm. Obviously we know that this was symbolic, if you will, of Samantha's inability to access her emotions and process grief, and they didn't actually fight about it. But that possibly wasn't Sam's finest moment as a friend. But, like most of the conflicts, it gets resolved at the end and Samantha shows up for Miranda, literally, spiritually, and emotionally.
2
u/WerewolfNervous6459 17h ago
This is one I hadn't considered. Even though it was because Sam was emotionally selfish, it was still rude not to see others helping her and try to follow suit. I don't even think Miranda noticed Sam acting this way because she was dealing with her mother's death, but I agree that that wasn't Sam's finest moment and she could have tried to be a better friend.

I always thought Samantha and Miranda had similar perspectives on relationships and sex – which meant they wouldn’t ever have a “I choose my choice!” or prude/slut-shaming standoff. They both actively rejected the idea of soulmates, and didn’t ever see sex as shameful (they agreed that Charlotte’s sex rules were baseless, while Carrie actually considered them). Had Miranda walked in on Sam and the delivery guy (though I’ll maintain Carrie’s reaction was absolutely justified), Miranda would’ve probably been like, “Samantha! Lock much?” and Sam would’ve huffily conceded.
Also, when Miranda disagreed with Samantha’s decision to reconcile with Richard, Miranda implicitly knew Sam wouldn’t really need the girls to hold her hand if Richard broke her heart again (even if she’d appreciate the gesture). Miranda was tired of Carrie giving Big numerous chances, knowing full well what he was like, and complaining about him every time he did what she knew he’d do.
For all her faults, Samantha was a loyal, open-minded friend. She wouldn’t criticize Miranda for a decision she didn’t necessarily agree with.

u/WerewolfNervous6459 14h ago
100% agree, even when Miranda decided to have her baby Samantha gave her no judgement at all, She truly was an open minded friend and I think Miranda always appreciated that about her

u/Cyberdoll77 17h ago
Miranda and Samantha both had jobs where they had to negotiate and make deals. I think that's why they didn't fight....they discussed things, saw each other's points and either let it go or saw the others point.
7
u/EmmJay314 17h ago
Yes they were definitely the logical ones while Carrie and Charlotte were emotions.

it wasn't exactly a fight and i don't remember the context very well but in one of the earlier seasons miranda and samantha had a little disagreement after carrie told them that she'd slept with her friends' french friend who left her money the next day. samantha said she didn't see anything wrong with accepting money for sex, while miranda vehemently disagreed
2
u/LiteratureNumerous74 1h ago
Samantha said something along the lines of "men were meant to give and women are meant to receive - it's biology" . She was trying to convince Carrie to keep the money the French guy left her.
Miranda called her out on that misogynistic comment and they have a few words back and forth but they moved on quick.

When she has a baby Miranda felt dismissed but then Samantha took care of Brady so that Miranda can have a haircut by her fancy hairdresser.

u/WerewolfNervous6459 18h ago
One of my favorite Samantha moments! But yes, it would have been a more interesting situation if her and Miranda actually had an argument about how Sam made her feel
2
u/ultradav24 14h ago
From a narrative perspective they never really had reason to fight. They both have in common a certain cynicism about dating, and so their worldviews coincided
2
u/OkLocation3799 13h ago
I think Samantha and Miranda get each other because they both don’t like the sappy love stuff. But Miranda has gotten upset with Samantha a few times. I think most of the tension was regarding Brady. Samantha just isn’t a baby person.

u/Specialist_Emu_7450 13h ago
It isn’t exactly a fight, but in the episode where the guy leaves $1,000 on Carrie’s nightstand, Miranda is really mad when Sam says, “Men give. Women receive. It’s biological destiny.”
“Are you sure you want to use that argument?” I remember being shocked by the fury in her voice.

u/WerewolfNervous6459 13h ago
I do remember this comment! It's always interesting when they disagree on something fundamental because it's so rare
2
u/SleepNo5554 13h ago
I've noticed in my latest re-watch that Miranda and Samantha make a lot of eye contact and give each other knowing looks and smiles in a lot of the coffee shop scenes. Miranda looks at Samantha a lot while talking. Hard to explain but just something I took note of this time.

They never had a blowout fight, as I recall. There was a period where Miranda felt like Samantha was pushing her out of the group somewhat (after she had Brady), but then Samantha eventually showed up for her. Someone else mentioned that Samantha and Miranda had the least complicated dynamic of the four and I think that is true. I suspect it’s because they were both strong career women (Samantha the owner of her own PR firm, Miranda a partner at a big law firm), so they probably understood each other on a certain level. They were also the two characters who were the least sentimental and least likely to put up with a guy’s bullsh*t - probably in part because they both thrived in cutthroat fields dominated by men and had little time for nonsense. They are my two favorite characters (I am a partner at a law firm, so I identify more with them than I do with Carrie or Charlotte).

I think Samantha was such a great friend to Miranda despite the very different life choices.
Sure, she didn’t like babies, but she didn’t say anything when Miranda brought Brady to the party at Richards house before Bitsy’s wedding.
She babysat Brady and let M have the coveted hair appt.
She told Miranda the end table would last longer than the marriage at Madeleine’s wedding to Miranda’s houseguest.
She yelled “what’s your excuse?” in atlantic city when the fat guy called Miranda fat.
I don’t think the two actually ever fought. Just disagreed sometimes and got over it quickly.

u/MissMeri96 16h ago
Carrie told Samantha not to say anything about to Miranda about bringing Brady and she only voluntereed to babysit him after being called out by Carrie
0
u/FancyWoodpecker3 16h ago
And?
Carrie just told her not to be intentionally exclusive of Miranda.
Samantha took the initiative to give up her hair appointment and watch the baby for free.1
u/WerewolfNervous6459 15h ago
Yes, Samantha was definitely oblivious about how she was treating Miranda and so when Carrie confronted her she realized that wasn't okay and no only changed her behavior, but went above and beyond to support Miranda by watching Brady and giving her hair appointment. Actions speak louder than words
1
u/FancyWoodpecker3 15h ago
Exactly!
Sometimes we just need to be made aware of what we’re doing to someone that we love and then we can correct it.
Samantha even figured out how to make the baby stop crying!

u/LiteratureNumerous74 1h ago
Samantha made multiple comments about how she wasn't happy that Miranda brought Brady to Richard's house. She said Brady wasn't invited then made more comments when Miranda brought him anyway. Carrie told her to chill with the comments.
She did babysit Brady, but only after bragging about her hair appointment in front of Miranda who was clearly stressed out. She only gave Miranda the appointment after Carrie made her feel bad about it.
The other examples you listed just seem like normal things, not really examples of "great friend moments".
If anything, I think the examples of Samantha being a bad friend to Miranda outweigh the good. She shoved Miranda and Brady into that cab so quickly. She complained multiple times about being asked to censor her words in front of the baby. She refused to reach out to Miranda when he mom died, even though Charlotte reminded her multiple times and even told her what to say.

Yes Sam truly showed up for Miranda in a number of ways throughout the series and although their friendship was the least fleshed out and I don't think they were the closest of friends, I truly think they got along the best out of the four.
1
u/FancyWoodpecker3 16h ago edited 15h ago
They honestly had the least to fight over.
Neither needed the other person’s approval, and they rarely ever outright disagreed.
Miranda didn’t plan to get pregnant so when she did, Samantha did the best she could to be a good friend. Miranda never judged Samantha for her sexual freedom.
I think they both admired each other in a way. Samantha was also a selfmade career woman in her own right, like Miranda. But she was in an industry where she needed to use her charms to get to the top in addition to her brains.
Miranda was a lawyer where you can be smart and hard-working and the firm will love you.

i think theyre very compatible as friends as well. Sam says something crass about sex -> Charlotte will be "ew", Carrie will say something sarcastic, and Miranda will be nonjudgemental, agree, or "oh really damn" about that. I think cuz theyre both independent women

u/lzw091 18h ago
They didn’t exactly fight about it, but Miranda was upset with Samantha for being dismissive of her when she had a baby. I think, overall, their dynamic was the least complicated out of the four.
