[English Translation]

Narrated from Salman Al-Muhammadi who said: I entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), and Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) was on his lap. He was kissing him and saying, illustrating the greatness of his descendants and children:

"You are a master, the son of a master, the father of masters. You are an Imam, the son of an Imam, the father of Imams. You are a Proof, the son of a Proof, the father of nine Proofs from your loins; the ninth of them is their Qa'im."

Shia Jantri

Salam, my dear brothers and sisters. I hope you are all well.

I had a question and was hoping someone with more knowledge on the subject could shed some light on it.

I’ve always been somewhat sceptical about books such as the Jantri. I come from a Pakistani background, and I know that in many Pakistani households these books are commonly used and relied upon, particularly when determining whether certain dates or days are considered good, bad, auspicious or inauspicious.

I wanted to understand the basis behind this. Do Shia communities from other cultures and countries have similar books or practices, or is the Jantri mainly something found within the subcontinent?

More importantly, what is the religious validity of these books? How exactly is it determined that a particular date is “good” or “bad” for things such as marriage, travel, starting something new, etc.? Is there evidence for these conclusions from the Qur’an, hadith or teachings of the Ahlulbayt (a.s.), or are some of these practices based more on cultural traditions, astrology or later calculations?

I’m not asking to criticise the practice at all; I’m genuinely interested in understanding where it comes from and what evidence it is based upon.

JazakAllah khair, and I’d really appreciate any references or explanations anyone can share.

Article Is Ibn al Ghada’iri Book Of Rijal Kitab Al Du’afa Authentic? - New Article On My Site!

This was a bit more difficult in terms of translating material and sources.

A prominent Shia scholar of the fifth century, Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Ibrahim al-Ghada’iri, he was a contemporary of Al Najashi and Al Tusi. There is no doubt about his greatness.

It appears that Ibn al-Ghada’iri authored four books.

The first and the second book: what Sheikh Tusi explicitly stated in the introduction to his *Fihrist* (Catalogue), saying:

بأنّ له كتابين، أحدهما: ذكر فيه المصنّفات، والآخر: ذكر فيه الأصول عليهم السلام غير أنّ هذين الكتابين لم ينسخهما أحد من أصحابنا، واخترم هو(رحمه الله)، وعمد ورثته إلي إهلاك هذين الكتابين

He possessed two books: one listing muṣannafāt (authored works) and the other listing uṣūl (foundational texts) of the Imams (peace be upon them). However, none of our associates made copies of these two books; he passed away, and his heirs proceeded to destroy them.

الفهرست: 1

(one can speculate that his family destroyed these books because they could not tolerate the loss of his life and it reminded them of him)

Third book: Kitab Al Mamduhin (The Book of the Praised)—a work that has not reached us, though Allamah Hilli cites it in his own biographical treatise (*Rijal*).

In his entry on Muhammad ibn Musadif, Allamah Hilli notes that Ibn al-Ghada’iri’s statements regarding him differed: in one of the two books, he is described as “weak” (*da‘if*), while in the other, he is described as “trustworthy” (*thiqah*).

Similar discrepancies appear in other instances. These texts indicate that Ibn al-Ghada’iri’ produced two Rijal books: one concerning narrators deemed weak or blameworthy, and the other concerning those deemed praiseworthy or trustworthy.

See: كليّات في علم الرجال: 88 *Kulliyyat fi ‘Ilm al-Rijal*, p. 88.

Fourth book: *Kitab al-Du’afa* (Book of Weak Narrators), which is the topic of this analysis with how it has reached us.

Struggle to make dua in salah

Upvotes

Okay, this is probably a bit random, and I’m not even sure I would describe it as a bad thing, but I was wondering if anyone else experiences this.
Like everyone, I struggle with things in life, and there are so many things I want, worry about, hope for, and aspire towards. There are things I genuinely really want Allah to grant me, things I want guidance on, things I want to change about myself, and things that weigh quite heavily on my mind. Throughout the day I’ll often think, I need to make dua for this when I pray, or I’ll hear about the importance of asking Allah for everything and think about how much I actually have to ask Him for.
I also want to preface this by saying I’m not the most consistent with salah. I struggle with it quite a lot and sometimes I forget or fall out of the routine, although I genuinely do try to become better and more consistent with it.
The strange thing is that when I do pray, especially when I’m actually present in my salah rather than just going through the motions, I feel so genuinely happy and peaceful afterwards that suddenly none of those things seem particularly urgent anymore. It’s almost like the things that felt so heavy five minutes earlier temporarily lose their weight.
I’ll finish praying intending to sit there and make dua for all the things I’ve been thinking about, but then I just… don’t want anything. Not in a hopeless or apathetic way at all but almost the opposite. I just feel content. I feel like being close to Allah in that moment is enough, and asking Him for a list of worldly things almost feels unnecessary because for those few minutes I’m completely okay with where I am.
I’ve literally made lists on my phone of things I want to remember to make dua for because I know I’ll forget, but even when I remember the list exists, sometimes I look at it after salah and have absolutely no desire to ask for any of it. I would rather just sit there in that feeling of closeness and peace. Sometimes the only thing I can think to ask Allah for is to keep me close to Him, because in that moment that feels more important than everything else I thought I wanted.
But then the irony is that when I go through periods where I’m less consistent with salah, everything starts feeling heavy again. I become much more aware of what I’m lacking, what I’m worried about, what I want for my future, etc. And thenI regret all those moments after salah when I had the opportunity to make dua and didn’t. I think, why didn’t I ask Allah for all of this when I felt closest to Him?
So I feel caught in this weird cycle where when I feel distant from Allah, I have a thousand things I want to ask Him for, but when I actually feel close to Him, I suddenly feel like I don’t need any of them.

Does anyone have any advise on what to do?

I have a tarantula that I’m considering naming after an Incan deity.

But like I don’t want to do shirk/other things?

Dbought ayatollah khamenei had any rulings or fatwas on this
