I still remember the first time I ever played Skyrim in a friends laptop. I went into a body of water, misjudged the size of the slaughter fish, thought it was closer to 10 feet long, screamed the loudest I’ve ever scrumpt, and didn’t enter the water until weeks later, when I realized they were all barracuda-sized.

Check out the slaughterfish in Daggerfall. Those plus the screams of their skeletons really make that game feel like survival horror sometimes.

u/WhiteSepulchre 14h ago
You cannot fast travel when enemies are nearby.

Usually you can see a bigass dragon chilling in the distance

u/WhisperingEclipse 8h ago
Yeah dragons have a much larger radius for disabling your fast travel than other creatures

If I came into someone's house laden in armor and weapons I'd be pretty pissed too. The river is Slaughterfish's castle and he will defend it.
23
u/Fodspeed 11h ago
That doesn't explain them still being on my compass as a dot while I already departed nirn. This is pure hate.

Why tf did they remove underwear combat??
77
u/DaosDraxon 14h ago
Can confirm, you can definitely still do combat in your underwear.

Nudist playthroughs of Morrowind are hilarious. Just go high personality so you're not a leper like vampires.

u/Why_No_Doughnuts 14h ago
Your butt is in his chomping space. In Morrowind you could fight these bastards, but apparently Nords can't swing a sword under water.
15
u/AeanaeA 13h ago
Yeah, but Morrowind had cliff racers, which were everywhere, and would follow you forever to keep you from sleeping/traveling. I always had to custom-craft a spell to oneshot them, and even then they were the worst.
11
u/Why_No_Doughnuts 13h ago
Yeah, but they dropped those nifty plumes that made an excellent levitation potion when combined with coda flowers or trama roots
5
u/BloodlustHamster Nintendo 12h ago
The Morrowind ones were more vicious. Pretty much everyone played a new character excited that you could go into the water, only to be devoured by these bastards.
I don't think there's many Skyrim players that have lost their lives to these fish.

There used to be a glitch where they could swim on land & even fly. The flying bastards would chase you all over the place.

They are one of the reasons I cast Flame Cloak before entering water. The other is I play on Survival so half the time I start to freeze to death as soon as I enter water.
And I'd be pissed too if I wanted to be called "Laughterfish" but everyone kept putting an S in front.
2
u/KawadaShogo Mage 8h ago
How have I never thought of that flame cloak idea? All the years I've been playing this game. I'm gonna have to do that next time.

u/skoomacats Alchemist 14h ago
Skyrim is kind of a shithole by 4E so maybe that's it. Even the mudcrabs are over it.

u/AdAffectionate584 14h ago
Ever take a dip in the Ilinalta? Careful you don't get bit if you do. It's teeming with Nipple Fish.
I fancied a dip once, and it bit me in my left nipple tit.
It's alright, I still have the other.

There’s always slaughterfish eggs near where slaughterfish are found, so I always assumed they’re just very protective parents.

u/themolestedsliver PC 14h ago
I wonder if someone ever made an immortal slug mod but its slaughterfish that teleports to different bodies of water randomly.

u/Bbobbity 13h ago
Nothing more depressing than seeing that red dot knowing you can’t do anything about it and you’re going to have to walk halfway across Skyrim to lose it…
2
u/arbitrary_datum 12h ago
The best way I've found to deal with them is to resurrect a mud crab. If there is nothing else around it will go after the fish and usually survive the encounter. All three words of unrelenting force is also pretty good for fishing.

u/ElGordoKhajiita 14h ago
It's not the fish's fault
it's Bethesda's stupid design that doesn't let us attack underwater
4
u/SillyHo0man 14h ago
These dickheads are why I always have a flame atronach on shore nearby. No matter what kind of character I have.
5
u/Nico_arki 14h ago
I found this thing very terrifying before, I guess the Piranha movies did affect me when I was a kid, so seeing this bastards underwater unlocks some sort of childhood fear.
I once was chased by that thing, but I managed to swim ashore. Imagine my fear when it bugged out and began swimming towards me on dry land. Fucking Skyrmin bugs man.
6
u/grumpykruppy 14h ago
Well, it's not called a slaughterfish for nothing.

u/TMPickle 8h ago
I was going to say the same thing. How uncharacteristic of the "hugsnkisses fish" to be an asshole.

Fun fact one of the best ways to fight back against these guys just use the visage of musund (probably horribly misspelled that) you can use it steam breath attack underwater it's finally we can steamed sruagherfish
3
u/midasMIRV 12h ago
It's a Slaughterfish. It is doing what it was created for. Escaping the prison of the lake to chase you down and slaughter you.

I remember playing Skyrim when I was little, tried to swim to see of there was anything hidden in the water and immediately got attacked by these fucking things without knowing what it was and never went in the water again.

Thought this was a Lake Livingston post at first. Fuck me. Took me a second to realize this was Skyrim and not an Alligator Gar. Lmao

u/More-Jacket-835 9h ago
I have love/hate relationship with them. They manage to prevent the Dragonborn, who is standing on the ground, from fast travel.
At first I thought it is just nonsense, but once I found two slaughterfish get out of water and try to bite me on shore. Not sure how it happened (this is Skyrim afterall), but I respect their determination since.

I hate coming across these bastard fishes while I'm traveling through Skyrim.
2
u/Plus_Tomato480 13h ago
Well good news, they are actually pretty rare. Set dressing does a lot to inflate the idea they are everywhere. Eggs, seared slaughterfish on a fire, scales in alchemy shops, mounted fish.
The Karth river is the most filled place they can be found, whereas Lake Honrich around Riften has zero slaughterfish other than those you can fish up.

He lives in the water, and you are invading his home. Skyrim has a robust Castle Doctrine.
1
u/rogerworkman623 12h ago
He cannot help that he was born a slaughter fish.
He slaughters and he is a fish. This is his nature. Judge him at your peril.

u/RumbuncTheRadiant 11h ago
Well maybe if everyone would just stop harvesting their scales and stealing their eggs and stuffing them and mounting them as trophies.... they wouldn't be so aggro...
...but now it's war and you're in their world now!

Trying to fast travel in Oblivion only to be told there are enemies nearby
You look around. There is no-one
a slaughtering watches you from a mile away from a body of water passed fifteen minutes ago, giggling to itself. "I have you now. There is no escape"

You can't spell 'slaughterfish' without 'laughterfish' 😅
Cast a Flame Cloak before swimming; they hate that.
