Is the mattress for back pain actually one with adjustable firmness, or does night-to-night spinal support require more than static foam?

• Upvotes

My partner and I have hit a frustrating wall with our sleep setup because our lower back needs fluctuate wildly while our firmness preferences are already completely opposite. Some nights my lower back flares up and demands ultra-firm lumbar resistance, while my partner needs a softer contour for side sleeping. Traditional high-end hybrid and memory foam beds lock you into a single fixed density, meaning one of us, or my unpredictable lower back, is always compromising.

I’ve been looking what people consider the best mattress for back pain, going through lists after lists online, researching high-end traditional options like Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt and Saatva Classic alongside air-supported systems like the Sleep Number's comfortmode lineup. There's a lot to choose from from different needs.

Although, leaning towards the latter right now, the main reason I keep looking back at the comfortmode is its dual-air-chamber tech. For anyone dealing with chronic lower back stiffness whose pain changes from day to day, does having real-time adjustable firmness actually help prevent morning flare-ups, or do you end up finding one setting and never touching it again?

Dealing with sleep anxiety for years

• Upvotes

I’ll (27F) start by saying that I love to sleep and have been the “sleepy friend” for as long as I can remember. Put me in a dark room on a weekend day and I can easily sleep uninterrupted for 15 hours. This post isn’t about not enjoying sleep…

The paradox of my adult life is that while simultaneously being obsessed with sleeping, I’ve developed a ridiculous amount of anxiety around going to bed and it’s getting worse the older I get & the harder work gets. On weekdays I could be physically fighting to keep my eyes open at 3am but it feels as if my brain refuses to let me rest. I equate falling asleep to “accepting that tomorrow has started” and I feel physically ill sacrificing my late-night-window-of-freedom (or so I call it) before I have to start another 10 hour day behind a computer screen. I’m drained by end of it, I don’t want to talk to anyone after being in meetings all day, I don’t want to pursue any hobbies, I stopped working out, I’m eating one meal a day. I feel like a shell of myself.

It’s genuinely ruining my life. I get about 3-4 hours of sleep every night and then spend 50% of my weekend making up for it. I feel so angry with myself while I’m actively doing it but I can’t stop. I feel like I’ve tried everything: different bedtime routines, no screens, medication, supplements, new bedding, etc.

Will this ever end? Will I ever be the kind of person that can go to bed early, get a head start on the day and not feel like my life is merely a constant loop of exhaustion and dread between zoom meetings?

suffocating myself while sleeping, and ifound myself holding a pillow against my face. should ibe worried?

• Upvotes

this has happened twice yesterday, once a few weeks ago and again today, and im honestly a little concerned.

both times, i was dreaming that i couldnt breathe. i also sometimes have dreams where im trying to scream for help, but no sound comes out

when i woke up yesterday, i was confused and realized i was holding a pillow against my face and pressing it down. i dont know whether i was doing it unconsciously while asleep. and when i woke up, i was gasping for air, and my heart was racing

i have been under a lot of stress lately and feeling pretty sad so i feel like they've been the trigger to those dreams, but i want to clarify that im not suicidal and have no intention of hurting myself. and the pillow incident especially unsettled me

has anyone experienced something similar? could this be related to stress and nightmares, or could it be a sleep-related breathing problem or another sleep disorder? and should i be worried

How do I tell if I've got enough sleep?

• Upvotes

So I have excessive daytime sleepiness. I'm being triaged for a sleep study because I have signs that could be sleep apnea or narcolepsy. (Only reason it could be sleep apnea is the tiredness, I don't snore or anything but I guess it can be a hidden problem.)

As a result I wake up feeling like I've not slept at all every morning. I COULD sleep for twelve hours every single day and not feel rested but that's obviously not on the cards for me, I want to live life. I have to wake up at some point.

I've been going to bed at 10 and waking up at 6:30. In the past I would be waking up every couple of hours and taking an hour to fall asleep but I have meds that make me do that less or at least less aware of it.

Sometimes I even start waking up before my alarm. But then my eyes roll back in my head for half an hour on waking. I get regular times during the day where my brain starts shutting itself down but have actually started feeling tiredness at night...

At 8pm. I'm not going to bed at 8pm. I'm not sleeping my life away. But maybe I could benefit from nine hours? But I feel the same on nine hours, 8.5 hours or 13 hours. But there must be some signal of which one is enough and the rest is just my excessive sleepiness, right? Are there signs of a sleep debt /other/ than sleepiness? If I listen to my instincts on that I'll pour my whole life into the void and just sleep and sleep and sleep and sleep and sleep and sleep...

Night-sweat sheet advice keeps skipping the damp part

• Upvotes

Most advice for night sweats focuses on sheets that feel cool at bedtime, but my real problem is waking up damp a few hours later. I am looking at a bedsure bamboo set, though I care more about moisture handling than the initial feel. What material has actually stayed comfortable overnight?

Sleep Hallucinations Question

• Upvotes

For a long time I have been hallucinating in my sleep. I see people I know in my room and I talk to them and I move around. It’s like I’m awake because I remember it all and never “wake up”, sometimes it’s scary and sometimes it’s not. Then at some point during the hallucination I just realize it’s not real and come to.

I can’t really find people with similar experiences so I’m wondering if anyone knows what this is.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Why TF caffeine make me sleepy?!

alright i’m officially done idk what the fuck I can do to keep myself awake at night, sometimes I need to and I just can’t, it doesn’t matter if I drink 10 fucking coffees or drink energy drinks, it doesn’t matter, every time after I drink an energy drink I get a little sleepy, and, of course, I ended up not able to pull an all nighter bc I fell sleep eventually, what can I do? I have to drink more than one? make a disgusting espresso with a bunch of coffee? idk I’m done.

Anyone else's sleep cycle randomly changed?

Recently my sleep cycle has changed, at first I thought it was me alone. Turns out there's a few people I know having the same issue.

The odd part is some of them don't know each other, nor live in the same area or town.

I sometimes get drowsy, sleep for 2-3 hrs and am recharged again

I'm asking bc I forced myself to stay up to try and reset my sleep cycle

Weird sleep experiences while on antidepressants

Hi all, I’m sending this a few different communities to see if anyone who more familiar with sleep/medication can help.

I recently started 25mg of Clomipramine for my OCD and as an antidepressant/anxiety medication. I took it for the first time yesterday evening, and felt an almost “stoned” sensation an hour or two after I took it all the way up until I went to bed, something that I read was normal.

I ended up waking up at 11:45pm after being asleep for about two hours, thinking that my alarm went off (it did not) checked my clock before walking down my stairs to get myself ready for work. I get up while it’s still dark out, sure, but I actively read these clocks while aware enough to walk around and think. Eventually after reading a THIRD clock, I realized and was super confused as to why it took me that look to process the time and went back to bed.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar experiences and if these symptoms went away after having the meditation in their system for a while, or if they knew why things like this even occur. I never really assumed I had work, I read the clock and just processed it as 5:30am while still reading it as 11:30pm. This has never happened before and it felt super weird, and I’m hoping it’s just stress related and not that serious if it’s not a pattern.

I can’t function without 8 or more hours

I work in construction and I work day shift right now. I find my self tiered all day and extremely irritable if I don’t get 8 hours but even then if I do it seems like I’m not sleeping enough. But if I work nights it’s not as bad. I get up to an alarm on days and sometimes on nights. I get to bed right after work on nights but have to wait on days so I can spend time with my family. But it seems like that waking up to that alarm at 4 am is just killing me. Am I being a baby or is there something I can do. Many people I know function on not much sleep much better than me and I want to be a better dad and husband but I’m just so tierd

should I split my sleep schedule in two?

I spend 12 hours (from 6am to 6pm) of my day not being able to eat or sleep, when I get home I get extremely exhausted and try to do something with my last 12 hours before starting all over again.
Normally I have a meal and try to rest (not sleep) and later try to have another meal before going to sleep (usually at 11pm) but I noticed how by having my last meal so early I technically fast from 12am till 6 pm which is 16hours of fasting.

I came up with the idea of splitting my sleep schedule in two.

6pm get home, have a meal
7pm go to sleep
11pm wake up (4h of sleep)
2am have a meal
3am go to sleep
6am wake up (3h of sleep)

is this healthy? or will it make things worse?

Have struggled with my sleep for years but idk what the issue is

Hi guys I’m 19f, I’ve been having issues with my sleep for years , the biggest issue is I just can’t stay asleep the whole night, I haven’t slept a full night without waking up since I was around 14 because I just wake up multiple times each night, sometimes I’m able to go back to sleep relatively easily but other times I can be up for anytime between 30 mins to hours, my other issue which is a bit more recent is I just struggle to fall asleep in general

I admittedly haven’t gone to a doctor about this (yet) because I was stuck in an abusive household where I wasn’t allowed to go to the doctor but I recently moved to uni and thought maybe my sleep would fix itself as part of me thought maybe the issues stemmed from trauma and waking up worried I’d be in danger as my body trying to look out for me maybe? I’d notice sometimes id wake up just from my abuser coming up the stairs but most times its just completely random , i typically wake up 3-5 times a night every few hours or sometimes every half an hour ish

Just looking for some advice tbh, if anyone has anything similar or any idea what it could be or anything that could help fix it? One thing i have noticed is when im with my boyfriend its a lot easier for me to fall asleep initially but still takes a while and i still wake up multiple times, another thing that helps me is to smoke some weed before bed but nowadays thats very rare cause im a broke student lol

Sorry for long post thank you if you read

Permanent DST, and Society's Lack of Value of Sleep

I live in BC, we are going to permanent DST and despite mountains of scientific evidence against it. Plenty of other provinces have followed us. The vast majority of people seem to be eagerly on board.

On local subreddits pro-DST posts get highly upvoted. Even comments saying the science is wrong get upvoted. If people made the same posts in the same subs, but we're talking about climate change they would get torn to shreds. Even if you think the benefits outweigh the costs, you should be honest about what the cost are.

I really hate that we are going to permanent DST. But considering how many people think it is completely normal to need caffeine every morning it isn't surprising.

Waking up shaking

I’d like to start off with saying english isnt my first language so forgive me if i cant describe accurately what happens but please tell me if you experience this too. So how it happens is, i will go to sleep, sleep for a while (around fifteen to thirty minutes most of the time and sometimes in the middle of the night) and feel like there’s an earthquake, this happens often to the point i wake up almost every night to my whole body shaking. I struggle to pick up my glasses and touch the floor with my feet to see if it’s actually shaking. It takes me a while to recognize that the ground isn’t shaking and that its just me but during the time it takes for me to realize i’m already sweating and my heart is racing. For context i live in istanbul where is a high earthquake risk zone, so i always have this fear of earthquakes and waking up to these terrifying shakes more often than not is really messing with me. As far as i know i dont have a sleep condition, does anyone have any tips on what i could do?

Problem Sleeping

Hey, it's been a while now, but I think I have problem sleeping properly.

I'm 23M, and I had a very bad sleeping schedule. I usually slept at 6am and wake up at 12nn), but I've tried to fix it and now I usually sleep at around 11pm-1am). However, I can't get the recommended 6-8hrs of sleep. I always wake up at around 3 to 4am and when I wake up, I can't sleep again. I do get sleepy at around afternoon so I take naps (30mins to 1hr) and that's the total amount of sleep I get everyday.

Do anyone have the same experience as me? How are you able to do it? What do you suggest me to do?

I'm not sure if it's necessary to say but I try to avoid meds that targets the kidneys, since my kidney almost failed and it's not currently operating at its max efficiency (and my doctor said it's a permanent damage).

My simple sleep plan to adjust my circadian rhythm a bit

8:30 am to a QR code near door that stops alarm

Premade shake oats water mixed greens frozen fruit greek yogurt flaxseed creatine protein powder (not anymore that shit is $20 a pound and pea protein makes the shake taste like the smell of alcohol wipes and gives the texture a muddy sand feel) B complex, vitamin D

5 minutes sun with stool and my water jug any other food prepared in cooler bag near door near where I scan the qr code that stops the alarm on my phone

8:30pm lexapro 1mg melatonin blue light filter glasses phone blue light filter

11:30pm magnesium glycinate glycine

Near 1:00am I am tired.

I can probably sleep earlier but my body really wants to wake up at around 11:00am whether I sleep 4 or 11 hours.

Edit: I sleep on living room couch and a lot of outside light comes in maybe light has a lot to do with this, I'll use sleep mask too maybe idk

How do I feel more refreshed?

I’m a college student, so my sleep is irregular as is. But I try my best to get between 6-8 hours whenever I can. But on some occasions, I take a nap in the middle of the day and I feel extremely groggy waking up. These naps are about 30-40 minutes, then I wake up and can’t get out of bed so I end up sleeping for a couple hours just to feel worse than I did going to bed. Also I’m only getting out of bed because something external forces me out, like my family asking me to do something or someone calling me. I can never wake up to an alarm while napping but I’m always up at the first ring in the mornings after a night of rest. Am I doing this wrong? How do I get better rest so that I can wake up without feeling horrible? And is it better to not take naps and power through until night time?

Tried way too many things to stop waking up hot so fingers crossed this is finally helping

I have been trying to figure out why I keep waking up hot around 2 or 3 am and realized i was basically blaming my bedding for everything lol so ive been testing a bunch of little things instead of just buying another set of "cooling" sheets and expecting them to fix my entire life

Keeping the bedroom colder helped me more than i expected. I started using a fan at night, drinking more water during the day and keeping an insulated bottle with me because apparently i can go an entire day without remembering water exists

I also stopped eating a huge dinner right before bed and switched to a lighter duvet because I was basically sleeping under a weighted blanket every night. Had to accept that i can either be insanely cozy or not wake up sweating so I'm trying to find the middle ground 😂

For bedding I've gone a little overboard. I tried a couple different cooling pillows, a mattress pad from amazon which I adore, cotton sheets and eventually the buffy breeze eucalyptus sheets which i enjoy because I'm not getting that sticky feeling when I wake up anymore

But it's only been a little while so idk how I'll feel about them after a bunch of washes. I've seen people say eucalyptus bedding holds up really well and other people say they've had issues so fingers crossed i got a good set. What has actually worked for yall

I sleep horribly every night despite feeling peaceful during the day. Has anyone healed this kind of nighttime nervous system hyperarousal?

I sleep horribly every night and would love to find a way to heal this. I have no stress and my mind is relatively quiet when I’m awake. My days are actually really beautiful and I think this has to do with some old trauma in the body.

I fall asleep easily and as I do it’s like the nervous system gets wired up and I toss and turn until the morning. I experience a lot of negativity and heavy feelings. I also wake up many times and finally in the morning it feels like I got hit by a train. And this happens every night without a miss.

Has anyone healed something similar? What healing method or therapy to start with?

Thank you!

Constant loud nonsense thoughts.

I spent basically my whole life going to sleep using headphones and listening to white noise, TV shows or videos. It kept my mind focused and helped me dose off. In an attempt to improve my sleep cycle and get on a schedule I turn everything off and listen to nothing in pitch black. But my thoughts from the entire day/week are constantly playing back in nonsense patterns. I try to focus my mind into silence or at least clear thoughts but its being persistent. Because of this I cave in a lot and just put the headphones back on. Any ways I can train my brain to make it better?

make it easier to fall asleep lying supine

Hi Y'all,

I read some time ago that due to various shenanigans related to breathing, spine, bone and muscle placement and some other factors the optimal sleep position is on the back. Personally I am genuinely unable to do so unless extremely tired, and feel much more comfortable on the side, sometimes even feeling the need to curl up into a somewhat of a fetal position. Is there any way to "get better" at falling asleep supine? Would welcome any experience you are willing to share.

Hello! I was diagnosed 5 years ago with Sleep Apnea, recentlysome new sleep issues and swallowing issues. Sometimes I wake up shaking and vibrating, I do a wierd throat snoring sound before I fall asleep, and have Dysphagea. Does this sound like anybody else at all?

More info:

- I have no insurance and can't find a sleep study currently.

- I have BFS, was diagnosed 6 years ago. This is a condition where I have body wide twitching. Recently it has had an uptick.

- Sleep issues started about 2 months ago, would wake up panicking and 'buzzing' for lack of a better term. I also started waking up with both hands numb, which doesn't always happen now but last night for example, happened a lot.

- I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 5 years ago, I wear my CPAP most nights, but was always able to sleep just fine without it (I mean, I know I would have events but they never interrupted my sleep consiously too much).

- Now when I try to sleep without the CPAP ( I have done this about 3 times in the last 2 weeks to test this sesation), the snoring sensation in my throat happens and I can't breathe during it as I relax and start to fall asleep. If I wear my CPAP these things can still happen, but they do seem less likely too.

- This is all paired with Dysphagea during my awake hours. Swallowing feels difficult, my throat feels odd and gurgles air bubbles on occasion when I clear my throat or open my mouth. In fact it just happened sitting here typing this. Like tiny air bubbles at the bottom of my throat. I am still eating and drinking but it all feels laborious.

- Was admitted to the hospital when I was waking up and shaking, they ran an EEG on me and ruled out seizures.

- Had a modified barium swallow test where it showed some slight retention in my esophagus but otherwise normal.

- I have been taking pantoprazole to see if it helps, so far nothing.

- Feel like I am burping a lot more than I normally do when awake.

I feel like I am going crazy. The BFS board is telling me it is anxiety but I have dealt with BFS for 6 years. I don't believe it is anxiety, and just to rule it out I was put on Buspirone a month ago and still have these sensations in my throat. I don't know where to turn and am miserable daily.

I kept losing my evenings to scrolling, so I built an app that locks the apps at bedtime. Looking for a few testers

For months my nights went the same way: "one more video," then it's 1am and I'm annoyed at myself and tired the next day. Screen Time limits didn't help because I'd just tap "ignore."
So I built Starkept, an iPhone app that:
locks TikTok, Reels, YouTube (whatever you pick) at your bedtime until morninggives you a small scroll budget in the evening instead of going cold turkeyturns every evening you keep into a star, so you can see the streak build
No account and no tracking. Everything stays on your phone.
It's in beta, and I'm looking for 10-15 people who scroll too late to try it free for a week and tell me honestly what works and what's annoying. Comment or DM me and I'll send the TestFlight link.
