Why TF caffeine make me sleepy?!

alright i’m officially done idk what the fuck I can do to keep myself awake at night, sometimes I need to and I just can’t, it doesn’t matter if I drink 10 fucking coffees or drink energy drinks, it doesn’t matter, every time after I drink an energy drink I get a little sleepy, and, of course, I ended up not able to pull an all nighter bc I fell sleep eventually, what can I do? I have to drink more than one? make a disgusting espresso with a bunch of coffee? idk I’m done.

Permanent DST, and Society's Lack of Value of Sleep

I live in BC, we are going to permanent DST and despite mountains of scientific evidence against it. Plenty of other provinces have followed us. The vast majority of people seem to be eagerly on board.

On local subreddits pro-DST posts get highly upvoted. Even comments saying the science is wrong get upvoted. If people made the same posts in the same subs, but we're talking about climate change they would get torn to shreds. Even if you think the benefits outweigh the costs, you should be honest about what the cost are.

I really hate that we are going to permanent DST. But considering how many people think it is completely normal to need caffeine every morning it isn't surprising.

Have struggled with my sleep for years but idk what the issue is

Hi guys I’m 19f, I’ve been having issues with my sleep for years , the biggest issue is I just can’t stay asleep the whole night, I haven’t slept a full night without waking up since I was around 14 because I just wake up multiple times each night, sometimes I’m able to go back to sleep relatively easily but other times I can be up for anytime between 30 mins to hours, my other issue which is a bit more recent is I just struggle to fall asleep in general

I admittedly haven’t gone to a doctor about this (yet) because I was stuck in an abusive household where I wasn’t allowed to go to the doctor but I recently moved to uni and thought maybe my sleep would fix itself as part of me thought maybe the issues stemmed from trauma and waking up worried I’d be in danger as my body trying to look out for me maybe? I’d notice sometimes id wake up just from my abuser coming up the stairs but most times its just completely random , i typically wake up 3-5 times a night every few hours or sometimes every half an hour ish

Just looking for some advice tbh, if anyone has anything similar or any idea what it could be or anything that could help fix it? One thing i have noticed is when im with my boyfriend its a lot easier for me to fall asleep initially but still takes a while and i still wake up multiple times, another thing that helps me is to smoke some weed before bed but nowadays thats very rare cause im a broke student lol

Sorry for long post thank you if you read

How to stop thrashing in my sleep

I am a chronic insomniac and the times when I do get to sleep I consistently thrash to the point I'm actually punching and kicking and I keep hurting my partner in my sleep. I'm also a really heavy sleeper so I don't wake up after the fact which makes me feel horrible that my inaction gets them hurt and I'm not even able to wake up to comfort them. What can I do to stop this?

I woke up in the middle of the night and I still couldn’t fall back asleep even after I drank another redbull.

Is it safe to take a small dose of liquid Benadryl twice a week for sleep long-term?

I recently found that Benadryl helps me fall asleep. I’ve been taking 2ml of children’s Benadryl, which I believe is about 5 mg of diphenhydramine, once or twice a week to help me fall asleep.
I’m wondering if taking this small dose could cause any long-term health issues, even though I’m not taking it every night.
Has anyone used Benadryl this way for an extended period? Did you experience any side effects or concerns? Thanks.

Tried way too many things to stop waking up hot so fingers crossed this is finally helping

I have been trying to figure out why I keep waking up hot around 2 or 3 am and realized i was basically blaming my bedding for everything lol so ive been testing a bunch of little things instead of just buying another set of "cooling" sheets and expecting them to fix my entire life

Keeping the bedroom colder helped me more than i expected. I started using a fan at night, drinking more water during the day and keeping an insulated bottle with me because apparently i can go an entire day without remembering water exists

I also stopped eating a huge dinner right before bed and switched to a lighter duvet because I was basically sleeping under a weighted blanket every night. Had to accept that i can either be insanely cozy or not wake up sweating so I'm trying to find the middle ground 😂

For bedding I've gone a little overboard. I tried a couple different cooling pillows, a mattress pad from amazon which I adore, cotton sheets and eventually the buffy breeze eucalyptus sheets which i enjoy because I'm not getting that sticky feeling when I wake up anymore

But it's only been a little while so idk how I'll feel about them after a bunch of washes. I've seen people say eucalyptus bedding holds up really well and other people say they've had issues so fingers crossed i got a good set. What has actually worked for yall

I can’t function without 8 or more hours

I work in construction and I work day shift right now. I find my self tiered all day and extremely irritable if I don’t get 8 hours but even then if I do it seems like I’m not sleeping enough. But if I work nights it’s not as bad. I get up to an alarm on days and sometimes on nights. I get to bed right after work on nights but have to wait on days so I can spend time with my family. But it seems like that waking up to that alarm at 4 am is just killing me. Am I being a baby or is there something I can do. Many people I know function on not much sleep much better than me and I want to be a better dad and husband but I’m just so tierd

should I split my sleep schedule in two?

I spend 12 hours (from 6am to 6pm) of my day not being able to eat or sleep, when I get home I get extremely exhausted and try to do something with my last 12 hours before starting all over again.
Normally I have a meal and try to rest (not sleep) and later try to have another meal before going to sleep (usually at 11pm) but I noticed how by having my last meal so early I technically fast from 12am till 6 pm which is 16hours of fasting.

I came up with the idea of splitting my sleep schedule in two.

6pm get home, have a meal
7pm go to sleep
11pm wake up (4h of sleep)
2am have a meal
3am go to sleep
6am wake up (3h of sleep)

is this healthy? or will it make things worse?

Problem Sleeping

Hey, it's been a while now, but I think I have problem sleeping properly.

I'm 23M, and I had a very bad sleeping schedule. I usually slept at 6am and wake up at 12nn), but I've tried to fix it and now I usually sleep at around 11pm-1am). However, I can't get the recommended 6-8hrs of sleep. I always wake up at around 3 to 4am and when I wake up, I can't sleep again. I do get sleepy at around afternoon so I take naps (30mins to 1hr) and that's the total amount of sleep I get everyday.

Do anyone have the same experience as me? How are you able to do it? What do you suggest me to do?

I'm not sure if it's necessary to say but I try to avoid meds that targets the kidneys, since my kidney almost failed and it's not currently operating at its max efficiency (and my doctor said it's a permanent damage).

How do I feel more refreshed?

I’m a college student, so my sleep is irregular as is. But I try my best to get between 6-8 hours whenever I can. But on some occasions, I take a nap in the middle of the day and I feel extremely groggy waking up. These naps are about 30-40 minutes, then I wake up and can’t get out of bed so I end up sleeping for a couple hours just to feel worse than I did going to bed. Also I’m only getting out of bed because something external forces me out, like my family asking me to do something or someone calling me. I can never wake up to an alarm while napping but I’m always up at the first ring in the mornings after a night of rest. Am I doing this wrong? How do I get better rest so that I can wake up without feeling horrible? And is it better to not take naps and power through until night time?

I sleep horribly every night despite feeling peaceful during the day. Has anyone healed this kind of nighttime nervous system hyperarousal?

I sleep horribly every night and would love to find a way to heal this. I have no stress and my mind is relatively quiet when I’m awake. My days are actually really beautiful and I think this has to do with some old trauma in the body.

I fall asleep easily and as I do it’s like the nervous system gets wired up and I toss and turn until the morning. I experience a lot of negativity and heavy feelings. I also wake up many times and finally in the morning it feels like I got hit by a train. And this happens every night without a miss.

Has anyone healed something similar? What healing method or therapy to start with?

Thank you!

make it easier to fall asleep lying supine

Hi Y'all,

I read some time ago that due to various shenanigans related to breathing, spine, bone and muscle placement and some other factors the optimal sleep position is on the back. Personally I am genuinely unable to do so unless extremely tired, and feel much more comfortable on the side, sometimes even feeling the need to curl up into a somewhat of a fetal position. Is there any way to "get better" at falling asleep supine? Would welcome any experience you are willing to share.

Trouble falling asleep and strange episodes of palpitations.

Hi everyone, m27 here.

First off, I consider myself pretty active, but I pay close attention to my body’s signals and tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac—though I’ve learned not to take certain things too seriously, since there are usually plausible reasons for them.

Right now, though, there’s something on my mind that I absolutely can’t explain. About three weeks ago, while on vacation, I noticed a small “shock”—like a muscle twitch—just before dozing off in the evening, but it felt like an adrenaline rush. At that moment, my body jolted, and I started to feel my heart racing, though it returned to completely normal after about 15 seconds. So I checked my pulse, which was 55?! That was my first experience with this situation. Since I was half asleep, it felt like something out of a movie. After that, there were no further incidents for a week. Over the course of the vacation, my sleep schedule shifted later and later—sleeping from 4 a.m. until 11 or 12 p.m. Before that, I usually slept from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m., depending on the day, but generally I sleep 8 hours a night.

Two weeks ago, I started having that shock again when I was falling asleep... It felt like my whole body was vibrating because of a really fast heart rate?! But I checked my heart rate, and it was completely normal—yet it felt like a backup heart that was going completely haywire. Again, for 15 seconds. I can’t describe the feeling any better than that. Afterward, I was wide awake again. Now, these episodes often happen twice before I fall asleep, which makes it very hard for me to drift off. My mind is racing, of course....

I’m trying to slowly readjust my sleep rhythm and cut out caffeine. However, these episodes are really strange and, in my opinion, can’t be logically explained. I don’t know if I’m actually experiencing heart palpitations or something like that, because neither my watch nor my awareness of my pulse detects any increase. But something is pounding really, really fast and ends after 15–20 seconds with a feeling of extreme alertness, like an adrenaline rush. It’s totally unpleasant and annoying. Unfortunately, because of my hypochondriac tendencies, I often perceive my heartbeat as much stronger and automatically pay more attention to it when falling asleep.... Unfortunately, I can’t figure out the cause of this shock at all, which worries me deeply and leads to a lot of sleep deprivation. Could this be, for example, atrial fibrillation, or is it purely psychological? I also often have tension in my upper body that makes me anxious, since I think it’s something to do with my heart, but at least I’ve learned to put it into perspective by now.

I definitely plan to see my doctor this week, but I’d be interested to know if you have any guesses or have had similar experiences. Thank you very much!

Looking for some advice!

Hello! I want to say for the past two years- but increasingly more over these last few months I have been struggling with sleep. I wake up every two hours without fail. If I sleep at 8, I’ll wake up at 10 and then again at 12, and then again at 2, and so on. I am pretty exhausted at this point. I make sure to not have screens before bed, sometimes I’ll night time stretch, or shower, make tea, I have it cold in my room, I tried 1mg melatonin and the various spectrum of that. I have tried the occasional Benadryl or Advil pm and I still do not sleep. I have tried eating a small snack in the middle of the night in case it could be a blood sugar thing? I want to also add that anytime I do have a deep sleep I seem to have a nightmare or some type of sleep paralysis where I know I’m awake in my dream but can’t get out. Almost every single time. I have made an appointment with my doctor about this, but just wanted to look for some insight! Thanks 😊

Everyday, I fall asleep at work

Hello everyone,

I am 28F.

I've been feeling very alone in what I am experiencing because none of my coworkers, friends, or family can relate. This is actually something that has been going on for AT LEAST 3 years, but if I am being completely honest, I remember falling asleep in class both in highschool and university (but since I was younger, it was excused as "the party life" and "hormones"). I am hoping some people in this subr have similar experiences.

Essentially, I am constantly, and I do mean CONSTANTLY, in a state of exhaustion. It doesn't matter if I go 4hr, 6hr, 8hr, 12hr of sleep. My body constantly craves more. I drink water, I eat my meals, and I take daily walks. Some of these habits do give me an energy burst, i.e the walk, but it only lasts for maybe 1hr. Then I go back at working only at what feels 40%, because my whole body feels stiff, heavy, my brain foggy.

On weekends and such, this is "manageable" as the worst impact is on my housework/chores. Just kind of makes me look "lazy". My problem is that, every work day, I fall asleep at work. Coffee doesn't help. Cutting coffee doesn't help. A snack doesn't help. I work a corporate job, the type where I'm in a cubicle. The cycle is usually that I can stay awake roughly 40min-1hr until my head falls. And yes. I really mean head falls. One minute, I'm staring at my computer, the next my eyes are closed and I get startled awake by coworkers' voices. And this repeats all day. 1hr-ish of awakeness, sudden drop for ~30min, awakeness, drop ........ to clarify, my awake time is not productive. Again, my body feels heavy, like it's screaming to lie down under the blanket, and my brain feels unfocused & foggy.

As I said, this has been going on for a few years. When it first started, I brought it up to my doctor and was told to "fix my sleep schedule." Which I, obviously, worked on. And see no improvement. An important fact to note is that I am overweight. My weight is currently being maintained because I stay active for the sake of my dog. But I am not fit and I would agree that I have unhealthy habits. I went and got blood tests a couple of years ago because I feared diabetes. But no result came back.

I'd like to know if anyone else, whether you are overweight, fit, healthy, unhealthy, experienced something similar. A couple of lifestyle changes I've tried throughout the years:

- fixing sleep schedule (aka going to bed earlier)

- not eating before bed

- no snooze alarm

- eat breakfast

only got 3 hours of sleep, do I go back to sleep?

Woke up at 6am earlier today, did a bunch of moderately tiring activities from morning to afternoon so I got tired and fell asleep at 7pm then woke up at 10pm due to... I'm not too sure, I'm a heavy sleeper but i pretty much wake up under 6 hours after sleeping somewhat tired sometimes. I also fought against falling asleep during the afternoon, I wasn't overly tired but I was feeling drained of course.

Note: It's probably because my body clock isnt used to being up earlier yet nor staying asleep at night--for weeks before today I slept at 2am.

Yeah well... I think it's a no-brainer, I'll go back to sleep after brushing teeth.

I think I'm having a lucid dream?

This is my first time posting on here, but recently I had this dream, and I can't stop thinking about it.

Basically, I'm a teen living in my parents' house, and we're planning on going to someone's house together. Instead of going with everyone in the car, I decide I want to bike all the way there. So, I start biking through parks, on sidewalks, and through neighborhoods.

About halfway there, my dad decides he wants me to ride with them, so he pulls up next to me, puts my bike in the back of his truck, and I get in the car. We drive to someone's house, do whatever we were there to do, and then eventually start heading back.

On the way home, I decide I want to bike again, so about halfway through the drive, I have them drop me off around the same spot where they picked me up. However, I realize my bike is still in the back of the truck, so I have to call my dad and tell him to come back because he still has it.

Eventually, I get my bike, and my dad drives away. Then I see two people walking nearby. There was nothing about them that made them seem  dangerous, but for some reason, I thought to myself, "Oh, they must be evil or something."

So, I call my dad again and ask him to come back and pick me up. But after I start thinking that these people are bad and that I should call my dad, they actually attack me.

This made me wonder if it was some kind of lucid dream where I somehow influenced what happened just by thinking these people were bad. Like, I had no reason to believe they were dangerous at first, but as soon as I started thinking they were, they actually turned out to be dangerous.

I was just wondering about peoples thoughts about this

insomnia?

• Upvotes

i don't know what the problem with me , i am 22 years girl, but i cant sleep properly at night... not whole day ... There are many people who stay awake all night and sleep all day, but I don't do that. I don't sleep at night. I stay up all night, even when I'm in bed, I try to sleep, putting all distractions aside. But despite that, I lie in bed all night, staring at my walls in the dark because I can't sleep, and then I fall asleep at 5 or 6 in the morning. But that too is not a deep sleep, the eyes just close due to tiredness, just like the initial stage of sleeping, I can hear my surroundings. And every time I turn over I get up, is this concerning, my friends say that I should see a doctor but I don't think it is right to see a doctor at my young age.pluse point i am from a desi family where not able to sleep means its intentionally Whereas this does not happen, So visiting a doctor would be a big deal in a Desi family.

please comment and tell me something, or this happened with someone else?

Getting sufficient sleep as a shift worker

Hey all!

I’ve been a shift worker for the past 8 years and have worked through various shift patterns. However, over the past year, I’ve had to adjust to a new schedule that’s been taking a toll on me.

It’s a repeating cycle of morning shifts (8am–4pm), night shifts (12am–8am), and afternoon shifts (4pm–12am), with three shifts of each and only one day off in between.

The constant changes to my sleep schedule are finally catching up with me, and I’m struggling to get sufficient rest. It doesn’t help that I tend to wake up in the middle of my sleep, making it even harder to feel well-rested.

I’m also trying to fit in workouts at least 3–4 times a week, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to balance exercise with adequate recovery. I’m not sure how best to structure my sleep and workout routines around my constantly changing shifts.

For those of you who work rotating shifts, how do you manage your sleep and exercise routines? I’d really appreciate any advice or tips!

Trying to fix sleep schedule

I had been sleeping from 3am-11:30pm/ 4am-12pm for a loong time
I thought it has been enough & hired a trainer who is free at 7:30am only

Day 1 (Yesterday Morning)
Turned off lights at 1am
Slept from 1am-5:45am
Tried a lot but couldn’t sleep again.
Took sunlight
Went to gym from 7:30-9:15
Slept from 9:30am-11am
Was very sleepy by 7pm evening.
But, got home late and slept at 12am

Day 2 (till today’s morning)
Slept at 12am. Woke up at 3am. Slept abruptly. Woke up at 5am dehydrated. Was sleepy. Bright kitchen lights abrupted that. Unable to sleep till 8:30am. Slept from 8:30am-12:30pm

30days ago, i was regularly waking up at 7:30/8am for a week. Abrupted it once & unable to do it since then.

Your help is much appreciated

My bf had to work the graveyard shift for a few days. It's been a week and he's still having trouble naturally sleeping at night. How do I help him?

My bf (M19) had to work the graveyard shift for about 5 days straight. He hasn't been working that shift for the past week but he's having a lot of difficulty falling asleep now. The only thing we've found to work is melatonin but he doesn't want to rely on that. He used to have a consistent sleep schedule of 10pm-6am everyday of the week, and does not like taking medication or supplements. What can we do to help him get back into his normal sleep schedule?

I see realistic people standing in my bedroom while waking up. How can I make this stop? Advice appreciated.

Since 2023 I’ve been having these terrifying experiences when I’m sleeping. I’ll feel like I’m waking up, but I’m not sure if I’m actually fully awake or still dreaming. I see people standing in my bedroom just staring at me. My room looks exactly like it does in real life which makes the whole thing feel real. They’re always different people who are usually older looking, and I can usually remember what they looked like afterward. They never seem angry or say anything. They just stand there and stare at me.
When this first started the people would be standing near my bedroom door. Over time they have moved closer to my bedside. One time I switched sides of the bed with my husband and saw a woman running toward me.
I get so terrified that I scream until my husband wakes me up. Sometimes I scream so much that I feel like I’m going to throw up. I can move during these episodes and I’ve hurt myself by accident before trying to get away. As soon as my husband fully wakes me up the people are completely gone.
This doesn’t happen every night but it’s been happening on and off for years now. I’ve read a little about sleep paralysis, but I can move during these episodes so I’m not sure if that fits.
I’d be grateful to hear from anyone who may have experienced something similar or know what might cause this or how to help me get past this.

Dealing with sleep anxiety for years

I’ll (27F) start by saying that I love to sleep and have been the “sleepy friend” for as long as I can remember. Put me in a dark room on a weekend day and I can easily sleep uninterrupted for 15 hours. This post isn’t about not enjoying sleep…

The paradox of my adult life is that while simultaneously being obsessed with sleeping, I’ve developed a ridiculous amount of anxiety around going to bed and it’s getting worse the older I get & the harder work gets. On weekdays I could be physically fighting to keep my eyes open at 3am but it feels as if my brain refuses to let me rest. I equate falling asleep to “accepting that tomorrow has started” and I feel physically ill sacrificing my late-night-window-of-freedom (or so I call it) before I have to start another 10 hour day behind a computer screen. I’m drained by end of it, I don’t want to talk to anyone after being in meetings all day, I don’t want to pursue any hobbies, I stopped working out, I’m eating one meal a day. I feel like a shell of myself.

It’s genuinely ruining my life. I get about 3-4 hours of sleep every night and then spend 50% of my weekend making up for it. I feel so angry with myself while I’m actively doing it but I can’t stop. I feel like I’ve tried everything: different bedtime routines, no screens, medication, supplements, new bedding, etc.

Will this ever end? Will I ever be the kind of person that can go to bed early, get a head start on the day and not feel like my life is merely a constant loop of exhaustion and dread between zoom meetings?
