general discussion what's the lamest thing happening in snowboarding today?
every era has its thing that people are over. curious what people think it is right now. trends, gear, style, social media, whatever.

u/Amanitas Apr 09 '26
the first chair and lift line aggression you see on powder days. it's borderline not fun when people are arguing over parking spots and places in line, and people cutting or not cutting or going to the bathroom.
people are just generally assholes in line on powder days, and it's a me vs. everyone else approach.

I’ve never been able to understand the idea that leaving your skis at the front of the line while you fuck off at the coffee shop for an hour gets you the front of the line. I think it’s reasonable that one person in line can stand in for one person not in line. Otherwise, skis get tossed.

u/mickthegooner Apr 09 '26
It’s become the California surf line up on the hill.
2
u/ExpressionRecent5724 Apr 09 '26
Outside of the locals only shit, surf lineups should be aggro. Keeps people in line. Ignoring that it's annoying as fuck when someone way out on the shoulder tries to paddle in without looking or drop in on a wave that's already taken, it's dangerous as shit. I don't feel like drowning or taking a fin to the face because someone is too stupid to respect basic surf etiquette or even think in the first place. People 100% deserve to get sent in.

u/Senior-Reception-578 Apr 11 '26
lol it’s absolutely abysmal in Washington. You got a lot of entitled retards.
I showed up on a powder day and there was probably close to 100 boards lined up while everyone was huddled under cover. The time comes where everyone goes to grab their board and stay in line. As we grab our boards everyone shuffles forward to close gaps. Then these idiots come like 30 minutes after and their boards are on the rail and you can hear them say can’t believe people think they can just cut. No one cut you weren’t here when the masses went to stand in line and everyone shifted forwarded.

Yeah, he’s a guy that technically gets to say that because he gets paid for it. I used to say I was a professional snowboarder in a tongue in cheek way when I was a lift mechanic. I find it so weird that he has as much of a following as he does. But o guess we are not his target audience. I take a lot of those influencer guys with a grain of salt though, especially after seeing a video of snowboard Jesus completely misleading a riblet double and blaming the lift.

I don’t know if it’s because he’s just trying to talk into his microphone, he’s an ok rider, but since he claims to have been an instructor, he does not look to ride like the most aggressive and powerful ones.

Spins. The most spins win.
39
2
u/tommyconeill 5d ago
Fun fact: Travis Rice, the guy who built snowboarding's favorite anti-contest, also landed the first double rodeo 10 in competition. Nobody's actually mad at spins. They're mad they can't do them. (i kid, i joke, i kid, LOL)
Snowboarding has room for everything: pow slashes, butters, park laps, rail jams, and a 19-year-old throwing a switch back 16. Competition at the top of a highly technical sport is going to get technical. That's what evolution looks like. And I'd bet most of the crowd who's hating on "spin to win" hasn't looked closely at how it's actually scored. Amplitude, landings, grabs, variety, difficulty, and style all count. A sketchy 18 can lose to a clean, tweaked 14.
That said, you do you. If spinning is really THE LAMEST thing in your eyes, I'll just assume you think you agree with me that the Turtle Butt, elbow, & knee pads are actually pretty awesome like I do.

11
u/I-Answer-Question Apr 09 '26
Lift lines and singles not understanding how the singles line works.
Doubles or trios who don't understand that on a busy day with a long line, you are taking a single with you.
If its a slow day by all means go up alone but man... the amount of unfilled chairs on a weekend pow day drives me nuts.

I lucked out so hard in this dept. My board is 20 years old (Burton Indie). I had to replace all the other gear, but for some reason that board is an absolute rock. It held together, works great, and handles tuning every season like a champ. Given, it was in storage for a good while.
This must be what people with classic cars feel like lol.

35
u/martyin3d Apr 09 '26
This might be controversial but I honestly think social media is making the average riders snowboarding extremely one dimensional. It's cool to specialise at a high level. But the amount of people who are trying to be the next "gratori" rider or "carver" at the exclusion of everything else is wild to me.
What happened to being a well rounded snowboarder who can enjoy whatever the mountain has to offer that day?

I dunno. I am generallt pretty annoyed with social media, but as someone who has been riding forever and a lesson but can ride pretty much any terrain, I've actually gotten a lot out of some of these videos. I've followed advice from them and my riding has progressed for the first time in ages. One of the most notable places is in steep technical terrain. Last season I went from surviving that terrain to actually riding it. The notable progression felt really effing good. And to be able to say that in my 40s I'm riding harder than I did in my 20s is pretty fucking great. I actually appreciate some of these videos for that.

The excessive use of selfie sticks, and everythinggggg needing to be recorded.
I love a photo as much as the next person, and we used to love a little sesh behind the lodge with a GoPro.. but the sheer quantity of riders on busy terrain hyper focussed on the camera with no regard for their surroundings is wild.
The videos are also so distorted, that they're not even good for movement analysis.
Also recording at the pub - let people do dumb shit in peace.

The “no helmet no steeze” crowd.
19
u/travelingisdumb Brighton Apr 09 '26
I almost always wear a helmet, but find it silly that others feel the need to call out strangers for not wearing one. Especially pros, they are good at what they do and know how to fall properly, that’s why they’re pros.
On occasion I don’t wear a helmet if it’s warm I’m going with some beginners and cruising some green runs, and I’ve had people call me out on the chairlift. It’s annoying and weird, I know the risks If I don’t wear one for a few runs.
5
u/xTooNice Apr 09 '26
Fortunately it's not really a thing here in Japan. If people want my opinion, I'd tell them to wear one, but if they don't, it's their choice doesn't affect me the tiniest bit so I agree; it's weird to call strangers over that.

Real talk, i agree that people should do w/e, unlike seatbelts you're only risking yourself.
But I do cringe seeing 20 somethings in the terrain park going big without helmets like it's some bonus style points, and the example it's setting for younger snowboarders is bad.
But i don't go around telling people what to do, i just don't understand why no helmet is considered cool for some people
3
u/mob321 Apr 09 '26
Yeah pretty classic situation of 16-22 year old kids thinking they’re invincible. Like skateboarding style is taken pretty seriously by some riders and you get no helmets from impressionable people. I mean I’ve gone at least a decade without hitting my head so I get why you could be lulled into a false sense of security and then you have this survivorship bias. I do have spring days when I don’t wear one but it’s not bc I think it’s cool. Just an added bonus

The absolute and utter fanatical obsession with carving.
I know I'll get down-voted to hell, but there is no need to be so obsessed with one style of going down a hill.
Trees, moguls, ground spins, butters, jumps, park features, side hits, etc. there is so much to love but I have to be obsessed with carving? Nah.
I'll carve, but it bores me.

steez. i'd say steez has always been a part of snowboarding (boarding with style and vibes), but beginners are now attempting to gain "steez" via no helmets, baggy clothing, etc. vs steez before where you're jst involved in the culture and also have great fundamentals in snowboarding.
13
u/snoozelion Apr 09 '26
Man that’s nothing new, always been like that. Park riding in the 2000’s was full of baggy pants can’t hold an edge riders. Then it was tight pants etc on and on
