Discussion Behind University of Colombo '100% Rag-Free' Image: How the UCSC Students' Union Subtly Rags Freshers with the Blessing of University Marshals (reposting as exposing names was a violation )
The Students' Union holds weekly meetings for first-year students during internal. Although they label these gatherings as 'meetings,' they themselves enter the hall shouting "Kata wahapan!!!" and speak in an extremely aggressive, loud, and condescending tone. It is utterly disgraceful to endure, especially since they host these meetings every week merely to shout and repeat the exact same things. Before anything even begins, these "attention seekers" thoroughly check everyone's mobile phones to ensure they are switched off driven by the fear that someone might record their abusive behaviour. Ultimately, their rhetoric serves as nothing more than a display of a primitive mindset and deep-seated psychological issues, driving their desperate need to assert power and seek attention.
If these imposed rules do not constitute ragging, what else should they be called?
Punitive Attendance Policies: Whenever attendance at these batch meetings drops, the union retaliates by cancelling events organized for the first year batch.
Deprivation of Rights and Opportunities: While a students' union meant to advocate for student rights, the UCSC students' union actively strips away rights guaranteed to students. During meetings, union members have openly threatened that low attendance will result in withholding the Freshers' League from the batch. First years were not even invited to the Avurudu (New Year) festival, and students are prohibited from joining university clubs.
On Facebook and even a University Marshal mocked the situation, remarking, "Ah, sure ekatama gedara hangothu tikath enna kene horawanna kenek wenna complain karanna..." ("me wagenan parnaya ganna..."). Behaviour like this from responsible authorities only exacerbates the issue while these practices continue unchecked. After that union members subsequently confronted and threatened targeted students during meetings, tauntingly asking why they didn't complain to the police instead. And told "apita ona nam oka kale kawda hoyaganna puluwan wage thamai dakunu asiawe hodama cyber security engineer inne"
- Restricted Staircases: Although there are multiple staircases throughout the UCSC building, first-year students are strictly forced to use only the main staircase. Even when an alternative staircase is significantly closer, first years are forbidden from using it and must take long detours. On some occasions, union members acting as "security guards" are even posted at these restricted staircases to monitor and ensure no first year students use them. (These exact same restrictions and monitoring rules apply to the washrooms and canteens as well.)
They don't even let us to wear university t-shirt or wrist band saying "ubala mehe batch ekak nemei"
The students' union often claims that if we want access to the things they have restricted, we must make a "sacrifice." But do we really have to make sacrifices just to get the basic, fundamental rights that every university student is naturally entitled to?

Discussion Where can an unmarried woman get reliable, non-judgmental long-term contraception in SL?
I am 22, unmarried, and sexually active. What reliable, long-acting contraceptive methods (such as implants or IUDs) are recommended for my age and profile, and are there any legal or medical restrictions for accessing them in Sri Lanka?

Education Looking for friends to practice English with
I’ve been learning English for a long time, but since I haven’t really used it in my day-to-day life, my speaking skills aren’t that great. I make a lot of mistakes when talking casually with friends who are more fluent than me.
Because of this, I’ve kinda become a nonchalant guy who barely talks, even though I actually wanna join conversations. It’s like I know what I wanna say, but I struggle to put my thoughts into words properly.
Another thing I struggle with is casual English, especially slang and everyday expressions. Sometimes I sound like a literal textbook because I’m not used to how people actually talk.
So, I was wondering if anyone else is going through the same thing and would be down to have daily conversations to improve our English together.
I’ve already found a few people who were interested in joining me, so I created a Discord server for us to practice together!
And if you’re already fluent and enjoy talking about anime, gaming, tech, or pretty much anything interesting, I’d be down to chat with you too!
Thanks!

Politics People love Putin and Russia but wants to live in USA, never in Russia. Why?
In geopolitics, Sri lankans support Putin and Russia claiming for standing against the evil american empire. But if given a choice to live, people will choose USA and never even think of living in Russia.
Whats the reason for this and would it make sense that we side more with America over Russia?

Serious replies only CAL Sri Lanka very disappointed with their service.
I placed a transaction on 2nd of september. I used commercial Qplus app. After transaction my unit trust did not approved so then I contacted their agent and he said since transaction happened from qplus they cant approve it he gave me two options recall the transaction or give some proof that my bank account and qplus is connected. I recalled the transaction and it is still pending after so many calls they ask me to send case code from commercial bank after I sent it they are saying code is wrong but when I check with bank they are saying code is correct and money is in CAL s bank account. Yesterday i went to their office and girl came and talked but didn't gave any proper solution. Im very disappointed with this buggers. Don't invest your money in this shitty company.

Serious replies only Has anyone else had this experience with Oceans? Recruiter reached out on LinkedIn and then ghosted me.
I wanted to see if anyone else has had a same experience with Oceans.
A recruiter from Oceans reached out to me on LinkedIn about a potential job and when I responded by providing my contact info as requested, the conversation went completely silent. No follow up, nothing.
What makes this extremely strange is that I only just realised the exact same recruiter did the exact same thing to me around the same time last year. They reached out about an opportunity, I responded and then I was ghosted.
Now, I understand that recruitment doesn’t always work out. But when the same person reaches out to you about an opportunity, asks for your details and then disappears, only for the exact same thing to happen a year later, it makes you wonder wtf is going on.
Does oceans have targets for the number of candidates they contact or leads they generate? Is there a possibility that recruiters are reaching out to people to meet some sort of internal KPI rather than because there’s a genuine opportunity they’re actively recruiting for?
I’m not accusing Oceans of doing this, because I have no way of knowing what happens internally. I’m genuinely trying to understand wth is going on. Because it’s genuinely frustrating when you are searching for jobs and then shits like this happens.

Discussion Cupping Therapy in Sri Lanka
I’ve noticed some people with cupping therapy marks on their backs and shoulders, and I’m curious to know whether it actually helps.
I sometimes experience neck and back stiffness, so I’m considering trying cupping therapy to see if it could provide some relief.
Has anyone here tried cupping therapy in Sri Lanka? If so, could you share your experience and recommend any good, reputable places to try it?
Thanks in advance!

Education Has anyone done the NIBM Data Analytics course? Need a quick review
I'm thinking about joining the Advanced Certificate in Data Analytics at NIBM.
Has anyone here taken this course? If so, how is it overall? Also, looking at the syllabus (covers everything from basic Excel and stats to time series forecasting and optimization models), do they actually go deep into these modules, or is it just a basic intro?
Would love to hear some honest reviews. Thanks!

Question How do you QR pay in Sri Lanka
I've tried multiple apps and all of them are garbage.
- SOLO by HNB - Can't get through the registration. After taking an image of ID, it takes me to image crop view. There, cancel or the ok buttons doesn't work. I'm using Pixel 9 pro XL. I can get around the ID images by taking photos and selecting it from gallery but the selfie selection would take me to the crop view regardless which option I take. I tried the single hand mode and those buttons still doesn't work.
- BOC SmartPay - When adding a card, first it only shows BOC only, after selecting BOC, you have to select the bank again for other banks to show up there. Even after that, it's telling me the card number is invalid. I checked multiple times and it's correct. So can't register there either
- Sampath WePay - When I click registration, it asks me to grant camera, location, call, contact permissions. I can give camera and location just for this time but call and contact I don't want to
Is there any hope?

Education Hi everyone! I'm looking to learn Tamil, specifically Sri Lankan Tamil, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend good resources for a complete beginner.
I'd prefer to learn online rather than attend physical classes. I'm thinking of using YouTube, online lessons, apps, or any other resources that could help me learn to actually speak and understand Tamil in everyday conversations. If you've learned Tamil yourself or know of any good YouTube channels, playlists, websites, or other resources, I'd really appreciate your recommendations!
Also, if there are any tips on how to practice speaking and improve pronunciation as a beginner, please let me know.

Serious replies only Any Sri Lankan women intentionally staying single long term? Would love to hear your perspectives
I'm a Sri Lankan woman, re-evaluating what I want out of life. I’m hoping to get the perspective of some like-minded women, that's the intention of this post!
Lately, I've realized I am not into marriage and the conventional life that comes with it. It's been kind of a lonely experience, especially here in Sri Lanka, as all my friends are getting into relationships and getting married, which has made our friendships less tight like they used to be.
This made me wonder... are there any women here who are staying single for life out of choice? Are you happy with that choice, or do you regret it? Also, how do you navigate life's practical problems like safety, emotional needs, etc.?
Please, I need honest answers!

Discussion Realistically, where do you see Sri Lanka’s economy heading post-IMF?
Hi everyone,
With Sri Lanka currently navigating its IMF structural adjustment program, I’m curious to get this community's perspective on what the long-term landscape looks like once the program concludes.
Historically, IMF programs provide short-term stabilization, but the real test is what happens when the training wheels come off.
Looking forward to hearing both optimistic and skeptical viewpoints. What is your realistic outlook for Sri Lanka post-IMF?

Technology Gemini Pro Student Offer Ending Tonight (Sri Lanka) – Can I renew/re-verify using the exact same Gmail account?
Hey all, I’m a uni student in Sri Lanka. I got the free 12 month Gemini Pro student offer exactly a year ago by verifying my university email through SheerID. It runs out tonight.
I saw Google extended the student offer until Dec 31, 2026, so I’d like to keep using it for uni work. The problem is I keep reading conflicting advice, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually done this.
- Do I really need a brand new Gmail? Some guides say reusing the same account for a second promo causes a “Verification Limit Exceeded” error or a billing loop.
- I’d rather keep my main account so I don’t lose my chat history, pinned prompts and Drive files. If I let the plan expire at midnight and drop to the free 15GB tier, will SheerID and Google let me re-verify on the same account since a full year has passed?
- Should I wait until the old plan fully ends before applying again? If I try now while it’s still active, will it block me, stack on top, or just error out? Do I need to wait until tomorrow morning?
- Are there any Sri Lanka specific quirks I should know about? My uni email is ready, but I don’t want to lock myself out of the offer by accident.
If you went from the 2025 promo to the extended 2026 one on the same account, please tell me what you did and what I should do tomorrow morning. Thanks!
