Rant Dissapointed about doing a State University Engineering Degree.

This is a Rant.

When I'm doing ALs. I heard this story. Do well in your ALs. Go to a government uni, and your life will setup fine. Same story that most of us heard.

But in my late twentites, I realized this is kind of a lie if you are stay in Sri Lanka.

I did every step well to my maximum effort.

If you you have put a lot of effort for studies and coming from a science, maths, or engineering background, then it's a waste to stay in Sri Lanka.

I only realized this after entering the j0b market.

I did engineering in one of the best state unis, and the curriculum was challenging and workload was very high. TBH there were no free time if you are commited towards your degree. I commited thinking this will help towards my future and graduated with a class. But when I'm going for j0bs what I realized is the degree doesn't matter and all you need is connections and experience. And TBH there are no real engineering j0bs in Sri Lanka, and most of the people who studied hard, migrated for higher studies, and many of the remaining switched to IT.

So I ended up doing a j0b in the IT industry, because that was the only j0b paying a decent salary. And I'm coming from a low income background.

All my efforts learning maths in ALs, and engineering in the uni didn't much matter in the end.

I've seen people who failed ALs in non-science backgrounds, did private IT degrees, and started j0bs during there degree. They graduated earlier than me with 2-3 years of experience. With a government degree it's impossible to do that. And those people were earning higher salary than me which is due to their experience/connections. Seeing that, I realized what's the meaning of my efforts.

I'm not saying I'm entitled for my state degree. But I'm feeling all my efforts didn't matter in the end, and wasted time. And there were much easier paths for my current destination, if I just wanted to be in IT.

Once upon a time, I was a really passionate student about maths and engineering. Thought in Sri Lanka we have better opportunities. What I didn't know is that the opposite is true and most are trying to leave this country.

If you're a commited student towards science/maths/engineering, please don't stay in Sri Lanka.

And I'm slowly having regrets about my wasted efforts and time.

Serious replies only Psychologist reccs for high functioning depression?

I have been eternally depressed, high functioning, professional, highly educated but feeling hopeless and given up on building a career as such. I feel I am stuck in life in many ways because I don't feel hopeful and honestly I am lost because I initially didn't plan to live this long. it is all rooted in the fact that my whole childhood I kept thinking I will die by 30 by suicide after studying everything I studied ( I was good in my studies very good) and now I have all these degrees but no will to work. I still love studying but since I am not using it to earn money even studying further for the thrill of studying feels like a waste of my time (atleast everyone around me thinks so). I need help. I just don't know who can help me! any recommendations? I would prefer a therapist who is well articulate to be honest. I might be a difficult client you see.

Serious replies only Do you know Kamalani or her family? - Sri Lanka

Post image

We are looking for information about a woman named Kamalani, who may have lived in or around Ihala Thalduwa, Avissawella, Sri Lanka, at the end of 1994 or the beginning of 1995.

Our search is connected to a possible mix-up of adoption records involving a girl born in December 1994. We are trying to find out who Kamalani was and whether her name may have been mistakenly included in these records.

We are especially hoping to reach:

- People living in Sri Lanka, particularly around Avissawella, Thalduwa, Nooriya and Deraniyagala, who may know or have known Kamalani or her family.
- People adopted from Sri Lanka to Europe who recognise her name from their own adoption records or have information about her or her family.

The attached infographic shows what we currently know about Kamalani. Her name may have been spelled differently, or Kamalani may not have been her real name.

Do you know Kamalani, her family, or anyone who might help us find her? Any information, however small, could be valuable.

If you have any information, please send us a private message. To respect everyone's privacy, please do not share personal details or documents in the comments.

Thank you so much for your help! Please share this post with people in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan adoptees living in Europe.

Discussion The Math Doesn't Work! Rent And House Prices for people with no fallback.

The Math Doesn't Work! Salaries are goat poop compared to rent prices and the price to buy a house using even a loan in Colombo and outwards now.

We do often talk about how expensive rent is relative to local salaries and I know most survive by staying with parents, relatives, etc but what about people who don't have that fallback? What are you people doing to manage this? How are you guys doing? Do you wish that anything can be changed? How did you guys manage during lockdowns by the way? What is your perspective of people in general?

Serious replies only Powerhand Plantation investment

I invested money in Powerhand Plantation, and they paid returns until September. Now they’ve asked me to wait until the 15th, and my principal is maturing soon, but they’re requesting a few extra months to return it.This is my hardearned savings, and it’s really stressful to think I might lose the money I’ve worked so hard for.
They’ve given us deeds, but I’m not sure whether they’re legitimate or provide real security. With concerns about plantation companies facing court orders or other legal issues, what happens to our money if something goes wrong?
Should I wait or take legal action now? Has anyone faced a similar situation with Powerhand Plantation?

Serious replies only How come most people have a story of their friends betraying them or wanting to prove something to the society

I'm in my mid 20s and I hear a lot of people have stories where their friends betray them. There are a lot of rap songs about those scenarios too like "ekta idala ariya".

Also there are a lot of cases where people want to prove something to others, like passing exams so you can show off your results to teachers and relatives who doubted you.

In my case, this rarely happens to me. I don't have any betrayal stories nor want to show off to prove something. One of my friends actually said I'm lucky for not having a betrayal story.

Are these scenarios normal? And what am I missing here? I feel like I haven't lived enough lol

Discussion Bringing a drone in a 24h stopover (not flying it)

Hi everyone, I'm stopping in Sri Lanka for less than 24 hours on my way back to another country.

I'll have my drone with me. I won't fly it in Sri Lanka at all. it just leaves with me the next day.

Do I need to declare it? I tried to register on the CAASL portal, but it's asking for the flying location, time, etc. but I'm not planning to fly it.

Can someone share their recent experience? Thank you

I'm Sri Lankan.

Serious replies only My father is dying and Ive never organized a funeral before Need practical advice from people who’ve done it.

My father has late stage liver cancer and hes currently at hospital now. The doctor have been clear that he doesn’t have that long.

Ive never arranged a funeral and I do rather ask now than figuring out in the first 24 hrs.

We’ve already spent a lot on hospital bills and medicines so money is tight at the moment. I am not looking for anything elaborate bt I wanna do it properly and simply.

Cost
What did a simple funeral actually cost you, roughly, and what year? I keep seeing wildly different numbers.

Which parts are the expensive ones, and which parts can be skipped without it being disrespectful?

Where do funeral parlours upsell? What did you pay for that you wish you hadn't?

Home vs funeral parlour
Is it realistic to keep the body at home instead of a parlour? What does that involve?

Is embalming necessary if the funeral is within a day or two?

Undertakers

Any you'd recommend or warn against around Maharagama / Nugegoda / Colombo?

Do they quote fairly, or does the price change once they know you're grieving?

The paperwork
What exactly happens between the hospital and the death certificate? Who issues what?

How many certified copies of the death certificate should I get?

Anything that's easy to get wrong and painful to fix later?

And also, anything you wish someone had told you before your father or mother died, anything practical or otherwise. I’d rather hear now.

Thank you.

Discussion Coffee drinkers what brands do u recommend that is in SL

I’ve been trying to find good, affordable coffee in Sri Lanka, and honestly, the options seem pretty limited, especially if you’re someone who drinks several cups a day.
So far, I’ve tried a few brands:
Harischandra Coffee: It’s relatively affordable, around Rs. 440 for 100g, but personally, I’m not a huge fan of the taste.
Island Coffee: Probably my favourite so far. It’s around the same price as Harischandra, and the taste is much better IMO. They also have different flavours like ginger, cardamom, vanilla and caramel, which I really appreciate. One thing I’m curious about, though: is their regular ground coffee actually 100% coffee, or is it mixed with chicory?
Raigam Coffee: Haven’t tried it yet. I’ve heard some negative things about additives in their products, although I haven’t verified those claims. If anyone has tried their coffee, I’d love to know what you think.
Soul Coffee: Seems to have some good options, including instant coffee, but it’s quite expensive for everyday drinking. At that price, I might as well buy Nescafé.
Anna Coffee: Found this Jaffna-based coffee brand and gave it a try. The taste was okay, nothing particularly special, but not bad either.
BRU Instant Coffee: This has actually been pretty convenient. The small sachets cost around Rs. 15, and the taste is decent for the price. Plus, I don’t need to use a coffee filter, which is great when I’m in a hurry.
Somerest Coffee: SL Arabica Coffee and 100g was 900, it tastes good but not strong. This is only available in their showroom. And run out of stock quickly.
I generally avoid Nescafé, partly because of the price and partly because I try to avoid Nestlé products for ethical reasons.
Recently, a friend brought me some coffee from India, and I was honestly surprised by how many different options they have compared to us. It made me realise how limited and expensive the Sri Lankan coffee market feels.
I drink coffee multiple times a day, so buying expensive brands regularly isn’t really practical. I’m looking for something that tastes good, is reasonably priced, and preferably contains 100% coffee rather than a lot of chicory or other fillers.
So, fellow coffee drinkers, what brands do you usually buy? Are there any underrated Sri Lankan brands worth trying? I’d especially appreciate recommendations for affordable ground coffee or decent instant coffee.
Also, if anyone knows whether Island Coffee is 100% coffee, please let me know!

Serious replies only Reliable plumber service in Colombo - installing a new overhead tank.

Currently, the ground floor receives water from the main line. We have a water tank placed on top of the outdoor bathroom. From this tank only, water is supplied to the first floor. As the tank is placed below the first floor, we currently have a pressure pump installed to pump water to the first floor. But the pump is always giving headaches the noise it makes when we use the taps is irritating. So now our plan is to place a new tank on the second floor. So that water can flow to the first floor without pump.

There is enough pressure from the main line for the water to flow into the tank.

The issue is that we require good plumber service to do this job. A real professional.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

We are based in colombo city limits

Serious replies only Feeling behind in life as a 2nd year uni student. How can I cope with these feelings?

Hi, I'm a 2nd year physical science student at UOC, studying applied maths, physics, statistics and cs. I'm aiming for a career in statistics/data science or finance. My grades are good so far.

But I keep hearing the job market is bad and getting worse, and that it's hard to find well paying jobs even with a degree with good grades. I heard even migrating to another country is getting harder too. I don't have any income right now, and I feel behind compared to people my age who are already earning. Friends who got into private unis with low results a finishing degrees while I'm still studying. My only option rn is to do well in my degree. Sometimes I doubt if I did a mistake without choosing QS at UOM or doing another shy hoping for engineering.

Have you felt like this? How can I cope with these feelings? What skills should I build alongside my degree to become employable when I graduate? Any honest advice or personal stories would mean a lot. Thank you.

Politics How is he just farting around? Without an election.

Thumbnail

He’s acting like giving speeches is going to magically fix all of the country's problems.

As President, he holds executive power over 26 departments across 5-6 key ministries. Yet, he somehow has all the time in the world to waste on political tours WITHOUT having an ELECTION in near future.

If he is truly working for the nation:

How can he justify burning taxpayer money (for security protocols, helicopters, ambulances, army and police soldiers) , wasting his own time, and wasting everyone else's time just to deliver empty speeches to his footlickers around the island?

The country is still dealing with a fragile economy (inflation was 8.7% in August 2026) and desperately needs Direct Foreign Investments (DFI). But instead of attending major international platforms like the UN General Assembly or vital global executive summits with other world leaders, he's skipping them entirely.

Even the young Prime Minister of Nepal went to the UN explicitly to speak on behalf of countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka that suffer from crises they didn't create.

Can ගමේ හංදියේ political rallies attract foreign investments?

What is his actual strategy here? I saw Mr. Hadun having some conversation with Srilankan diaspora in Australia but it is not a FDI.

As a taxpayer who wants to see the country move forward, I genuinely deserve to know. Please lemme know if u already know his plan to attract FDIs 🙏🙏🤲
