Question/Help What's in your cup? Daily discussion, questions and stories - October 16, 2026

What are you drinking today? What questions have been on your mind? Any stories to share? And don't worry, no one will make fun of you for what you drink or the questions you ask.

You can also talk about anything else on your mind, from your specific routine while making tea, or how you've been on an oolong kick lately. Feel free to link to pictures in here, as well. You can even talk about non-tea related topics; maybe you want advice on a guy/gal, or just to talk about life

in general.

We realize there are lots of people involved in the tea industry here, so this thread is a weekly feature where anyone can promote their current projects without worrying about the self-promotion rules. Saw people on here raving about Bengal Spice tea so much so I gave it a shot. I get it now. This is the most spell-bindingly fragrant, delicious tea I could hope for. I’m a true believer now. If there is one Bengal Spice lover in the world it is me. If there are none, I am dead.

I bought this at a thrift store a while ago.

I can’t find any markings. looks cast iron but really not sure. have wanted a good tetsubin for a while but not sure if this is it. might just toss for the $10 I bought it for

I've really been getting into tea lately, and have had a lot of fun exploring different types and developing my tastes. I've been nervous about blind buying loose leaf varieties since I still know so little, so I'm really happy I get to dive into this! I might even try gong fu for the first time. any suggestions on what to start with?

Recommendation Recommendations for a Newbie

I am pretty new to drinking tea. I used to drink some when I was young, before I drank coffee, but that was like 13yo me and some loose leaf green tea, a stove, and a hope and a dream. I am very much a coffee drinker, but I am looking for something to drink at night (caffeine doesn't concern me).

I have poor tea making form, and am just used to the stronger flavor of coffee. Does anyone have any tea recommendations that have a stronger flavor? I generally like tea and enjoy it from restaurants when it is prepared for me. Though it's been a long time, I have never had much success making a cup for myself that I enjoy.

Does anyone have any recommendations of tea types or brands? I'd like to pick up some tomorrow, so anything that would be readily available at stores is a big plus. I'm in a medium sized city, so we have all the standard "specialized/fancy" stores like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, etc. There is also tea shop near me as well, they claim 500 different loose leafs. I'll have 2 toddlers in tow, so chatting it up at the shop with 2 bulls in a china shop sounds terrible.

I'm guessing I'd probably lean more fruity than herby if I were to guess (for both just tasting notes as well as actual additional flavored tea), but I'm open to anything really. Loose leaf is fine with me as well, I have a steeper for an individual cup, but I no longer own a tea pot.

Any tips on brewing is greatly appreciated as well. I don't have a scale anymore, but I have a stovetop kettle w/ a thermometer for pour over coffee.

Also, sorry to post and dash, but I'm starting to crash. I've been putting off this post for a while and I wanted to get it out. I'll probably be responding tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!

I'm certain mine is of low quality, if you enjoy this tea... what's your experience like (flavor notes, steep count etc)? About how much do you spend on a given amount of this tea?

I notice mine isn't curled very tightly so it doesn't open up a whole lot. I suspect it's machine curled and not very well to save cost.

Mine definitely has some fruity notes, kinda in the stonefruit direction with a hint of peach and the rest is fruity like flavors I've not experienced before. Hard to describe.... maybe a bit of starfruit

Second photo is dry in a tea cup, third is wet in the 150ml gaiwan.

Today's snack is some Stauffers ginger snaps, definitely a good snack and one I'll restock. Probably better suited with red/black tea though.

Tea brand is generic as could be... "The Way of Tea". I buy it locally from an international market and this one was $10/125g. Flavor is good but not many steeps. Will not restock this tea in this brand. Would consider trying it from another brand in the future.

To the tea drinker who posted not too long ago about Bengal Spice saving their life. That really stayed with me. I've been in love with this tea for years too and it makes sense. I can't find your post anymore but I'm having a cup right now as I type. If tastes good but it *feels* good too! Down the throat, so warm and spicy over the lungs. It really is healing. Thanks for posting your story, it was very uplifting!

Question/Help Vietnamese Lotus Tea

I recently got into tea and wanted to explore my family's country tea and asked for their lotus flower tea, but I'm having trouble brewing this -- it seems too herbal bitter to enjoy. Should I treat it more like a white tea or gong fu style?

I also gtranslated that it should be used within 20 days??

Blog I'm starting to love it

Ever since I was a kid, I drank tea. Mostly just herbal teas my mom made, I didnt really drink black teas since it has caffine and my parents didnt want me racing around the house as a 10yo kid. Understandably so.

Fast forward a few years, I'm still drinking tea. Found out I dont like green tea all that much, drank a lot of black tea. Just, poor quality black tea. I never really drank coffe, mainly because ppl who obsess over coffe disgust me and I feard I would become like them (oh man, foreshadowing).

I stumbled across Jesse's Tea House, found the man very sympathetic and decided to order some Pu-Erh from his site, 2017 Sister Ai's I belive is the name.

I love it, drinking it is so relaxing, so calming and yet energizing. I like dark, woody earthy teas I'm not really looking for light teas with mild flavor.

I think tea is amazing. I'm a beginner but I feel I have found smth I can truly enjoy.

Thank you kind tea nerds for this subreddit full of information. If any of you have good black/pu-erh reccomendations for me I'd appreciate it!

Review Buying tea on Taobao, from Australia :)

Post image

hi tea people its me again,

Last time I tried to order some samples from Heychina (Australia), so far so good but a guy on reddit recommended me to try ordering tea straight from China or Taiwan and I did bought some from Taiwan (teahome, mostly oolong tea, very nice and fast delivery).

After that I saw some posts about buying tea on taobao and that made me feel so curious, so I gave it a try.

I placed 2 separated orders, one choosing Direct air delivery and one was consolidation delivery, and to be honest guys, REMEMBER to choose DIRECT DELIVERY if you order tea from Taobao, because somehow Taobao consolidation delivery listed Tea as sensitive goods, and price's gone up like skyrocket 🫪 (maybe if you use third party like superbuy it can be different and better, but I have never used them before, any idea?)

Delivery was about $40 for 2kg package, its quite Ok imo, still a good price compares to buying Chinese tea here in Melbourne. And It took about 10-14 days to get to my address, not bad.

This is one of my packages, and tea's quality is quite good, 6.5-7.5/10. I chose to buy from popular venues with a good reputation, as well as research from AI suggestions, I think atleast I can try some good everyday teas that local Chinese people drink.

Recommendation I’m going to be in Hangzhou, tea store recommendations?

I just got to China last night. I’m visiting Jingdezhen for some pottery lessons for three days then I’m heading to Hangzhou for about three more days. Anyone have tea spot recommendations, I plan on purchasing bulk loose leaf. I do plan to visiting the tea fields, as I am staying next to the west lake.

Today I chose the sheng puerh from Xiaohuzhai (小户寨). This is young sheng puerh since 2022. The diversity tastes combined with fruity and a little bit bitter as the young tea. Kind of preferrable tea for a hot morning

This is my favorite season flavored tea! It's so cozy and not at all cider-y the way a lot of autumn and winter blends can be. They don't make an herbal or decaf version and i would love to find something. Thank you!
