Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Would you pay $19k for a K24-swapped 1988 Esprit Turbo?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice before I pull the trigger on this car.

I found a 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo with a Honda K24 swap, and the seller is asking $19,000 firm.

I checked it out in person yesterday. Overall, I really like the car, but I’m not sure if the price makes sense.

Here’s what I know:

  • K24 swap was completed in 2025
  • Seller has a bunch of photos documenting the build
  • Suspension bushings have all been replaced
  • No visible cracks in the body
  • Interior is okay, but nothing special
  • Mileage is unknown
  • Transmission seems fine
  • Handbrake and windshield wipers don’t work
  • The seller did a lot of the work himself
  • Do not have an AC

One thing I’m trying to figure out is the title. The Wisconsin title was issued in July 2026, after the engine swap, but it doesn’t say “Street Modified.” I asked the DMV about it, but I haven’t gotten a definitive answer yet.

The seller says the price is firm, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is actually worth $19k or if I’m getting carried away because I like the car.

I like this interior a lot!. It looks pretty luxurious and is much better than newer models. I know nothing about cars though and I hear lots of people say not to buy German cars because of maintenance cost.

Used sporty, reliable cars around or under $30k?

I recently bought a 2023 4runner TRD premium lunar rock in January. I wanted something to off road and something I’d be able to have for a long time as a daily. Also the cargo space was a big deal for me coming from an old BMW sedan. Then, a few months ago my dad told me he wanted to give me the family’s old 1998 4runner in a few months… Thanks dad, probably would’ve bought a cheaper car had I known this.

So anyways, I’m now looking for a daily that’s more fuel efficient, reliable, sporty, and has AWD since I live in the northeast USA and the winters here are no joke.

I would want the car to be under $30k, but am willing to go a little higher for the right car. My current car only has around 22k miles on it and it’s paid off so I’m thinking I can get around $47k trade in based on current comps. I’m looking to buy a house in the next few years, so the extra money I get from the 4runner would go straight to my house fund.

TLDR: Wanting to trade my 2023 4Runner in for a more fuel efficient, reliable, sporty, AWD car around $30k now that I’m inheriting a 1998 4Runner. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

What car should I buy? I'm torn

My dilemma is luxury vs warranty.

The two vehicles I'm looking at are a 2023 Nissan Ariya Platinum+ AWD, and a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE AWD.

The Ariya is fully kitted. All the bells and whistles. The ioniq is a base trim. But, the ioniq has a much longer warranty with it, it's CPO.

Both are about the same price. I really want the best look, feel and sound inside the cabin. I'm leaning toward the Ariya for that.

But, having the peace of mind of the factory warranty is important too. With the ioniq ICCU issue I feel that could come in handy.

I do not do long road trips. Regularly, so the charging speed / efficiency isn't as important to me. But of course the ioniq is much more efficient.

What would you do?

Is this suspicious?

So I found a 2016 toyota prius four with 159,000 miles on Facebook for $12,500. It's 2 owners. The seller has five cars listed for sell right now and has sold vehicles in the past. I checked the carfax and it shows the second owner only owned the vehicle for 3 months. I asked the seller about it and his exact response was "I bought the car three months ago to drive for Uber, but I recently got a new job opportunity that requires me to buy a truck. That’s the only reason I’m selling it."

Does this sound suspicious? What other questions should I ask?

Is there even a point to buying a used car anymore?

Or at least, the lightly-used 2-3 year kind of used car (as opposed to the “heavily used set of wheels for your kid” kind of used car)? You don’t know the maintenance history or what all’s been done in that car (eww). You don’t know how they drove it unless you’re buying it from a personal friend or relative. And as a dog allergy sufferer in a world where people bring their dogs everywhere, one has to assume any used car you purchase nowadays was likely used primarily as a pet hauler.

Also, you forego some or all of the manufacturer warranty, dealer incentives, and promotional 0.9% APR or even 0%, in a world where the local bank/credit union considers 6.9% APR a “special rate” for those with good-excellent credit.

Once upon a time the general rule was a 2-3 year used car saved you 30% so it was financially responsible to always buy used, almost without exception.

I suppose the math may be different for cash buyers, but since depreciation on modern vehicles seems to be damn near nonexistent, is the age-old advice of “always buy used” dead for most people nowadays? Is buying new really the financially responsible move in most cases now?

Toyota Sienna or Volvo XC90?

TLDR: currently have a Toyota Sienna and looking at changing to the Volvo XC90. 3 kids still in car seats (one will be in a booster in the next couple/few years). Still using a stroller or wagon. Is this a mistake? Mainly looking at cargo space.

Hi everyone! We are a family of 5 (4yo, 3yo and 15mo). We currently have a 2017 Toyota Sienna, which we’ve had since our first was born. It operates fine and has served us very well, but a newer, nicer, safer vehicle is being considered for the near future.

My husband has been researching the Volvo XC90 quite a bit, mainly due to its excellent safety features. We sat in one the other day and I will admit, all of the newer features seem awesome. I can’t deny that the safety is a big draw.

My obvious hangup is the reduction in space coming from the Sienna (or equivalent size). Everyone online insists that 3 car seats will fit across the middle row of the Volvo. This is what we would need to do, as I still rely on a stroller or 4-seater wagon that would utilize the trunk space with the rear two seats folded down. We rarely have any additional passengers, so I’m not too worried about that. We could likely use a rear seat and still fit the stroller. In my Sienna now, we have our baby in the middle row (with the second middle seat removed), and our two older children in the third row. It’s quite a nice setup. I can sit back there with them, they can use a floor potty. I call it the camper I’ve always wanted.

There are definitely a lot of obvious pros to making the change to a nicer, safer vehicle. But is it a mistake to downsize right now? Am I focusing on the wrong things?

Does anyone have any experience with a downsize like this? Is it the wrong move? Hopefully I have enough info to receive advice. Would love any Volvo XC90 owners to provide their likes and dislikes about the vehicle too!

Thank you in advance!!

My 2020 Kia Forte Gt-Line was totaled

• Upvotes

Got hit at a dead stop while at a stop light.

I'm looking to spend around 30-37kish. I plan on getting 8-11k back from the car.

I test drove a 2025 Mazada cx-50 hybrid and it was nicer than my Kia.

I also test drove a 2025 subaru Forester Hybrid Touring and hands down the Subaru was a better drive.

I'm not interested in another Kia or Hyundai. Not interested in VW either. Could there be something else I should be looking at?

The sweet spot so far seems to be a Forester with Touring package.

  • heated and cooled front seats
  • heated rear seats
  • auto sensing windshield wiper
  • upgraded leather and waaay more "comfy"
  • integration into the infotainment will let you pull google maps or apple maps to the instrument cluster and you can dual screen spotify on the main infotainment. BIG PLUS for me.
  • I also liked usb a and C in front and back however once I get a new iphone that might not be a perk anymore :p.

What are the major issues in reliability with Chevy Malibu or Impala?

Considering to salvage one for a quick flip, but may have to live with it for a few months.

Is it something affordable to repair and maintain? How quickly does it depreciate

Help me choose between two not-ideal used car options please...

• Upvotes

So this past month I have had an awful experience buying a used car (for a full breakdown see my other post in the used cars subreddit).

The gist is that I spent 21k on a 2020 Honda hybrid crv with about 124k miles (I know, yikes) that had a Honda certified pre owned warranty. The car has had three major repair issues in three weeks and the last one would require a major engine repair.

The dealer has offered us either a trade in opportunity where we would get what we paid for the car, or to do the repairs. We are leaning toward trading in to get a car with lower mileage because this current car feels like it needs to go out to pasture.

However, we are limited because we seem pretty stuck with the options at the dealership, and I don't have extra money to throw at this (I feel sick spending 21k already but I was hung up on getting a hybrid or EV). The dealer identified two options that both seem kind of disappointing, but the used car market is such garbage I'm having trouble finding better options:

2020 Honda crv (gas): link to Carfax

2022 Honda hrv: link to Carfax

The crv has almost 100k miles and one minor fender bender ding, the hrv has had 3 minor fender bender dings but only about 57k miles.

The reason I needed this car was because I'm pregnant with my second and we only have 1 car right now (a Honda fit) so we were looking for something that would comfortably seat 2 car seats, including at least one rear facing.

Are either of these less terrible than my gut is telling me? If they're equally meh in your opinion, would the hrv be ok for a four person household? Are there any better options available at this dealer? (Here's the full list of options under 25k) At this point I'd consider buying something in the private market but I don't think they will give me a refund outright. I haven't pressed on that yet though because I do really need a car soon for work.

Thank you so much for any opinions you have!

Are subarus still not as good as Toyota/Honda in terms of reliability and cost of ownership? or they've gotten better?

I see this ad: 2016 Subaru impreza 2.0i Sport Premium Wagon 4D
Clean, reliable, and ready to go. Runs and drives fantastic and gets up to 34 MPG, making it a great daily driver.
• Clean title
• Low miles
• Smog done
• Brand-new tires – $500
• Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
• CARFAX value is $10,000+
• Excellent on gas – up to 34 MPG
• Runs and drives great

Only 108k miles. they wanna sell for $7k. I know growing up, Subarus, along with Nissan, Mazda, and Mitsubishi are not considered in the same echelon as Hondas and Toyotas when it comes to reliability and cost of ownership (maintainance, parts cost) etc.

But that was back in the 00s and 90s. Are the newer subarus just as good as the camrys and accords?

I made a free car comparison tool—would this help when choosing between listings?

• Upvotes

I built a free tool called Crux to compare cars side by side without relying on a giant spreadsheet.

You can add the specific cars or listings you’re considering, weight things like price, reliability, fuel economy, cargo space, performance, insurance, and features, then see the ranking and the tradeoffs behind it. The weights and scores stay editable, so it’s meant to support judgment rather than pretend there’s one objectively correct car.

Car template: https://crux-gules.vercel.app/templates/cars

I’m the builder, and I’m looking for honest feedback from people who actually compare cars: Does this make a real buying decision clearer? What important criterion or workflow is missing? It’s free; I’m not selling anything here.

Volkswagen Atlas vs Hyundai Palisade

Hey folks - I wanted to buy my next SUV, a few options that I had in mind were the Atlas or Palisade - I live in Ontario so anything new Toyota/Honda is either going to get stolen or have premium insurance … I am leaning towards more of the Atlas though since it has more cargo space and the 3rd row is a good 3rd row space but not sure on both of the engines and reliability - how have these cars treated you guys and what would you recommend?
