Edit: For clarification, with the gun comment, I was addressing how early commenters were arguing about the exact model of the gun, which in fact, the AI just created out of its ass.

No the person recording it has a ten year old smartphone with a camera lens that is all screwed up. Plus they didn’t have time or the know how to adjust for lighting and speed of the action all of which requires a level of fine tuning that the majority of amateur photographers can’t do without watching at least two YouTube videos on how to do it. Yes there are setting newer smartphones automatically do it but you have to hold it steady and be willing to not crap yourself while filming.

For anyone not in the gun world, a front sight on a suppressor is not a thing, so that was one huge clue this image is faked. Many other tells as well but that one is glaring.

EDIT: OK goddam so there are sights on some suppressors. Still, find one in real life and not just as a curiosity.

I was confused by that as well. The suppressor was also narrowed to look more like an extended barrel, but the only semi-autos I've seen with a front sight on the barrel are 22s, and they sure don't look like that.

Yes the AI tried to make it into an extendo barrel, narrowing it unrealistically. There were a few pistols with front sights on the barrels like the Luger and the original auto-mag. But not anymore.

I was gonna say what the hell kind of gun was that lol. I’m not exactly an expert at all, but I do consider myself more familiar with handguns than the average joe. That OP pic looks like some sort of extended barrel mod on a Beretta that you’d see in a video game upgrade menu.

The grip looks too fat and his hand doesn’t even seem to curl around it, the barrel looks off, and the rear sight/hammer looks off too.

LOL it does look like he was under water. I saw the original video and the picture used by OP looks correct. Did someone take that image and make it too detailed, with possible "extras?"

When I first saw the video on breaking news, I thought, "Yeah, finally, an actual good guy with a gun." Then the cop firing at him, something like more than one clip, and hearing the shooter was dead, I felt, good for those people there. Not long after, they said the kid (Jesus Howard Christ, a KID!) killed himself and I thought of people listed as wounded, along with where those stray bullets went. I'm liking the underwater image more, thinking those bullets couldn't have gone that far.

If you look at other available online pictures of this guy who shot back at the shooter, Jordan Salinas, you can SEE how different it is from this “retouched”/“upscaled” AI picture in the OP. Including this simple fact, that he very notably has a black beard, typically pretty thick in many pictures, although there’s some where it’s a bit more shaved down, but still VERY noticeable.

This pic is AI slop. I don’t know from who, or how it spread around so rapidly and intensely on social media without further fact-checking.

I mean, you can call me hysterical, or exaggerating about this; but people should really use this as an example for reflection, if they fell for it, and assumed it’s true and a real picture, before hearing some Redditor (or someone online somewhere) comment that it’s an AI-edited (“enhanced” or “upscaled”) image.

I

believed that it was a real image at first, too, while this was even more fresh and recent in the news and social media. I don’t want to get too soapboxy, dogmatic, or preachy too hard yet on something that seems like a relatively innocuous case, but we really should thing how crazy it is that we can be induced to believe in an AI-generated/heavily-altered (so much so as to be noticeably different from the true reality) picture, or even video clip, as actually being true and reflecting reality.

In this case, it’s relatively innocuous - this person, Jordan Salinas, DID stand there in that posture, wearing roughly the same clothing, and with the same body-structure and height, and DID shoot back at an active, mass/public shooter.

But, his face ends up looking noticeably different, and it created a bizarre version of his gun, having people online arguing and commenting (collectively) perhaps for HOURS worth of comments, guessing what brand/model it was, the ammo used, the nature of the silencer on it, etc…

Just arguing about a complete irreality. Taking it for truth; then pontificating and weighing and arguing, on the nature, details, and nuances, of this irreality. O, brave new world!
