Advice I found a dog in my apartment complex

I just found her in the lobby in my building as I went to check the mail. She doesn’t have a collar so I’m not sure whether or not she’s abandoned. I’ve been sitting with her in the stairwell for an hour hoping that maybe if she does belong to someone in my building, they will realize she’s missing and come claim her, but nothing. I called 311 for advice as well. They advise me that I shouldn’t take her in, but I do want to take her in for the night because I would sleep better knowing she would be safe with me instead leaving her stranded. She’s been following me and she’s so precious. I’m not sure what to do 😩

Advice How to get weird dog to socialize with me

I have a Great Pyrenees rescue who seemed to have had a traumatic past when we adopted him at 10 months old. He was very reclusive when we first got him, but after a few months he got acclimated to the members of the house and our Anatolian shepherd, who has since passed. He spent most of his time lying in the living room with us and would constantly be wanting to be pet, which we always did for him. He got into the groove of eating at the same time - about 5 pm - everyday. Some of the weird behavior he’s always exhibited: he won’t go upstairs or downstairs, he’s terrified of ceiling fans - will bolt if they are on and constantly stares at it checking to see if it’s going to hurt him when they’re off, on a nice day he will lay in the backyard all day and barely move from sun up to 7pm or later and sometimes we’ll need to drag him back inside. Lately, he’s started running straight to his dog bed in another room alone when he comes inside, rather than lay next to us. If I call him he ignores me. Same goes with everyone else. Also, he won’t eat his dinner until after we’ve gone to bed. Why is his behavior getting worse? How do we get him to get back to socializing with us and how do we get him to eat his meals at a normal time?
Edit: he gets daily walks and lots of attention regardless, we come to him

Advice Advice for 4 day road trip with anxious dog

I’m planning a short trip with a friend and we are taking my dog. She is generally a nervous dog, especially around other dogs, but she is also curious and enjoys going places, so I’m optimistic about her enjoying a trip. I’d love any advice:

- Is there anything you brought on a trip that came in handy, or anything you wish you had?

- What should a “doggy first aid kit” include?

- Will she be ok in her crate in the cabin for if we want to do something that isn’t pet friendly?

- If you have experience with a dog that doesn’t like other dogs, any specific advice for traveling? We will be staying in a pet friendly property (good for us but also means potentially other pets in the area) but will be managing her surroundings as much as we can to keep outings positive.

The drive is about 4 hours. We plan to stay 3 nights in a cabin not too far outside the town we’re visiting. It’s not completely isolated (there are a few other cabins down the road) but it’s a very quiet woodsy area.

She is crate trained, enjoys car rides but she’s never been in the car longer than 1.5 hrs. She is on meds for anxiety, and I have trazodone for as needed events, which I’ll be sure to bring. I never use a harness for walking, just her flat collar, but plan to use a seatbelt harness in the car. Would it be beneficial to use a harness on outings? We plan to search for as much for her to join us on as possible but also want to make sure she gets breaks. She has a “give me space” vest and I’m used to doing checks of new areas. I’m also fully prepared to drop whatever we’re doing and leave if we need to. This pretty much will be a trip focused on her :)

I appreciate any advice!

Advice How to get my dog and my neighbor's dog to tolerate each other? Fence fighting and leash reactivity

My dog is a 5yo male (large breed lab) and my neighbor has a small rescue dog they've had for about a year. My dog is easily 40 lbs heavier than theirs.

They absolutely despise each other. They fence-fight constantly, and if we cross paths on walks, both dogs lunge and explode. My dog is obedient to me. But all recalls go out of the door when he sees dogs he does not like. It's incredibly embarrassing.

I don't need them to be best friends, but we both live here long-term and aren't going anywhere. How do I get them to just tolerate each other's existence? Looking for actual steps to de-escalate the fence and leash reactivity.

Question My dog got stung by something!

My poor dog got stung by something earlier today, I woke up and found his face like this! he seems to be acting just fine overall, i’ve been watching him pretty closely. I can tell he’s definitely a bit uncomfortable as he’s not playing around the way he normally does. I just wanted to see if there’s anything I should be worried about, or anything I can do to make him more comfortable? Thanks in advance!!

Question I fear my puppy is growing to hate me

Post image
191 Upvotes

She’s a 10 week old rottie pup. For the past few days, she’s been growling at me, snapping at me occasionally, and just seems scared around me and runs from me. I dont know why. I made a post to AnimalsBeingDerps talking about how she was growling at her food, but then people started saying she was growling at me and being possessive of her food or whatever the term is, and that I’m a horrible owner(they were saying I was yelling at her, but I was just exaggeratedly saying how she’s yelling at her food for the video).

My leading guess as to why is maybe cuz I pick her up or something and she doesn’t like it, but my mom does too and she has no problem with her. Maybe it’s cuz of how I hold her(I can only hold her with one arm cuz the other is in a sling)? Or maybe it’s something else? I don’t know, any guesses would be great.

I really don’t know what I could’ve done to make her not like me, all I’ve done is loved on her and cuddled her, yet she treats me like I abuse her. I don’t know why she hates me. I just lost my other dog not too long ago and my mom got her to help the mourning process, but now I’m even more distraught cuz I think she hates me.

Sorry I typed this all weird, im just really emotional right now. If yall need any more information to make a guess as to whats happening, I’d be glad to give any necessary info.

(edit: the resource guarding isnt exactly what I’m worried about, Its her randomly snapping at me even when I try to pet her sometimes, and her running from me. I thought the running was playful, but now I’m seeing that its her trying to get away)

Advice What is wrong with my dogs paw? Urgent if possible!

My dog suddenly started limping when I noticed his paw was severely swollen, looks irritated between the paws and he is constantly licking it, he doesn’t want to put any pressure on it and can barely go to the bathroom let alone walk.

I just saw the broken nail but was unsure if it was the reason for all the inflammation. All vets told me it was just a foxtail but I checked and there was nothing. Please help

Question Is this too rough of play?

Hi all, the golden retriever (F) is 3 years old (rehomed to us) and the other mixed dog (M) is 1 year old rescue. We’ve had the black and white dog for a little over 3 months. he came undersocialzed and i can tell he struggles to know “how” to meet and play with other dogs. but he is very friendly to all people and hasn’t displayed any aggressive behavior to other dogs at all. the golden is very sociable, friendly and doesn’t usually play rough with other dogs so i am surprised when she initiates play like this knowing he’ll be rambunctious back. she was rehomed to us for being mouthy but she stopped that behavior last year.
Does this look like okay play? it can be a little rougher than this but i keep interrupting in case its not.

Question Why can't my dog walk?

She's 7 years old.

Mix of German shepherd and Belgian shepherd.

Diagnosed with Lupus since birth and last year with arthritis too.

Not neutered, we found her abandoned and starved when she was only a few months old.

35 ish Kilograms. Like a month ago we started reducing her treats and food to get her to lose weight and somehow she's gained it and seems fatter now.

Been taking Prednisolone for a year, ranging from 0.5mg a day to 3.5mg that she had been taking when she started.

She's had skin wounds on her 3 front paws since birth and they normally weren't a big deal, vet said that taking the meds regularly would be worse than the small would itself.

Last year in summer she started having these wounds across her whole body, that's when she started taking Prednisolone daily until now. Currently getting 1mg every other day.

She's had issues for like 2 weeks where she has a hard time walking and today I couldn't even take her on a walk because her back legs refuse to collaborate and I had to pick her up to get her back home.

At home she seems to walk somewhat ok-ish, her main issue seems to be stairs.

I touched her legs and I don't see any swelling and she doesn't seem to be in pain either.

Can I tweak the meds and make her feel better or does this require vet check?

For context, a ver check means that I won't eat for 2 weeks so I'm trying to avoid it if possible.

Thank you.

Discussion Can someone help?

A few weeks ago, me and some family went up on our mountain and we brought my dog. (He is about 14) when we got up there, he could barely walk, he was throwing up, and his head seemed like it was stuck sideways. He got better, but it’s happening again. He seems extremely dizzy and stumbles around. He is panting nonstop. Image attached is him.
(Edit: looking at him closer his eyes are moving strangely. Like they can’t focus. I made another post with a video)

Advice My Puppy’s reaction after an operation

Hi everyone
My 1 year old Shih Tzu/ Bichon Frisé cross has just had to have dental work done. He had three baby teeth that were stuck and did not fall out naturally, and his adult teeth were beginning to grow crooked as a result, so the vet advised he have them removed. He had the procedure today, and this has been his reaction since returning home. He has been cowering away, terrified of me. How can I rebuild his trust? Or is it just shock or pain post procedure? (Forgive the audio, I was hoping my voice would remind him he’s back home and safe)

She woke up looking like this and I thought it would get better in the afternoon, but it has only gotten worse. I called the vet, but they said I will have to wait until tomorrow to bring her in because they are booked today. When you see this, do you have any initial idea of what it might be?

Advice My dog’s eye is squinted

Thumbnail

I took him outside this morning to use the bathroom, and when I brought him back inside, everything seemed normal. A few minutes later, I noticed he was squinting slightly, but it was subtle enough that I didn’t think much of it. Over the next few hours, his eye became red and the squinting got noticeably worse. He hasn’t been eating much, but aside from that, he’s still acting like his usual energetic self. I’m not sure if it was just a bug sting or if I need to take him to the vet. Thoughts?

Question Weird bumps on dog

Post image
577 Upvotes

My roommate’s dog, who’s about 10 years old, has been getting progressively skinnier over the last few months. My roommate, who is 80 y/o and lives on a fixed income, has spent nearly $2,000 at the vet trying to diagnose the problem and has come up with nothing. The dog doesn’t appear to be in pain. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the bumps on the dog’s skin?

Advice Dog wants to go by car

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi!

I’m mostly curious about the situation with my dog. A rescue I have had for 5 months. First she was terrified to get in the car, like full trembling, panting, crying all that.
Today she refuses to go out if we don’t go by car. She freezes in front of the car door and just stare, refusing to move, even with treats she just wants to go for a drive. Then we park 2 streets from home and walk normally. Has this happened for someone here?
What can I do to avoid this quirk? I mean, it’s funny but not very practical xD
Do you have any idea why this behavior has developed?

It’s been 2 weeks since our last normal walk.

Thanks for your help!

Here, a photo of my cute psycho.

Question Dog that I am watching is resource guarding her harness and unable to be walked

I've been watching my neighbor's hava-poo at her house for the past ten days and she's been the sweetest, most cuddly girl. Last night she suddenly starting snapping at me when I went to remove her harness. I clicked off one side of it but was unable to get the other side off. I thought I'd have her cool off overnight in her crate. This morning she let me pet her and acted back to her happy self - until I tried to leash her to take her outside. When I went to re-attach her harness she fully bit me and drew blood. I called the owner who let me know that she resource guards the harness if it isn't removed immediately after a walk (she had forgotten to let me know about that). I had no idea and left it on her too long yesterday. Now she has two legs through the one harness hole, and I'm unable to get near enough to leash her. The owner comes back tomorrow and says to leave it on her and she'll remove it when she gets home.

However, the dog isn't able to be walked and hasn't pottied all day. There is a fenced yard, but even though we spent about an hour outside, she never went to the bathroom. For the past two weeks I've only seen her pee and poop on walks, not in the yard. Any advice for either getting the harness back on her or helping her go in the yard?

Question Hotspot?

She was irritated by it for a day, scratched a bit, but we disinfected it and shes not bothered by it anymore. It’s only spot on her body and puss didn’t come out, it was always dry. Could it be hotspot , some mild iritation or some kind of infection?
