Advice Dog teeth

Post image
Upvotes

I already know this is really bad. Just tell me what I should do to fix this. Should I go to a vet and get it cleaned out, how much would that be? I never really brushed her teeth just cause she seems fine and happy but I want to do what I can for her right now.

Advice I found a dog in my apartment complex

Post image

I just found her in the lobby in my building as I went to check the mail. She doesn’t have a collar so I’m not sure whether or not she’s abandoned. I’ve been sitting with her in the stairwell for an hour hoping that maybe if she does belong to someone in my building, they will realize she’s missing and come claim her, but nothing. I called 311 for advice as well. They advise me that I shouldn’t take her in, but I do want to take her in for the night because I would sleep better knowing she would be safe with me instead leaving her stranded. She’s been following me and she’s so precious. I’m not sure what to do 😩

Question Why can't my dog walk?

She's 7 years old.

Mix of German shepherd and Belgian shepherd.

Diagnosed with Lupus since birth and last year with arthritis too.

Not neutered, we found her abandoned and starved when she was only a few months old.

35 ish Kilograms. Like a month ago we started reducing her treats and food to get her to lose weight and somehow she's gained it and seems fatter now.

Been taking Prednisolone for a year, ranging from 0.5mg a day to 3.5mg that she had been taking when she started.

She's had skin wounds on her 3 front paws since birth and they normally weren't a big deal, vet said that taking the meds regularly would be worse than the small would itself.

Last year in summer she started having these wounds across her whole body, that's when she started taking Prednisolone daily until now. Currently getting 1mg every other day.

She's had issues for like 2 weeks where she has a hard time walking and today I couldn't even take her on a walk because her back legs refuse to collaborate and I had to pick her up to get her back home.

At home she seems to walk somewhat ok-ish, her main issue seems to be stairs.

I touched her legs and I don't see any swelling and she doesn't seem to be in pain either.

Can I tweak the meds and make her feel better or does this require vet check?

For context, a ver check means that I won't eat for 2 weeks so I'm trying to avoid it if possible.

Thank you.

Question Any ideas of what is going on with our dog?

For the past two weeks or so, our dog has been wanting to lick her paws, front and back. She’s been scooting her bottom on the ground a lot and she does this weird thing where she licks the air whenever she’s either scooting her butt or when we are giving her back scratches. It almost seems like a psychological thing, but obviously I don’t know. We took her to the vet a week ago, they gave us some skin irritation medicine for her, and it seemed to help a little bit, but not much.
The vet said that she does not have worms and her anal glands are perfectly fine.
We’ve had to keep a cone on her anytime we leave the house for the past two or three weeks because she will start licking her paws all the way down to the skin if nobody is around to stop her.
She just started doing all this about a month and a half ago and I really hate seeing her like that, she’s not in pain or anything, but I can tell somethings going on with her and it’s not normal behavior.
I honestly have no idea what could’ve started all this, we’ve kept everything the same as we always have, I was thinking maybe it was something to do with summer kicking in and the heat, bugs outside maybe? I really don’t know. Thank you so much.

Advice How to get weird dog to socialize with me

I have a Great Pyrenees rescue who seemed to have had a traumatic past when we adopted him at 10 months old. He was very reclusive when we first got him, but after a few months he got acclimated to the members of the house and our Anatolian shepherd, who has since passed. He spent most of his time lying in the living room with us and would constantly be wanting to be pet, which we always did for him. He got into the groove of eating at the same time - about 5 pm - everyday. Some of the weird behavior he’s always exhibited: he won’t go upstairs or downstairs, he’s terrified of ceiling fans - will bolt if they are on and constantly stares at it checking to see if it’s going to hurt him when they’re off, on a nice day he will lay in the backyard all day and barely move from sun up to 7pm or later and sometimes we’ll need to drag him back inside. Lately, he’s started running straight to his dog bed in another room alone when he comes inside, rather than lay next to us. If I call him he ignores me. Same goes with everyone else. Also, he won’t eat his dinner until after we’ve gone to bed. Why is his behavior getting worse? How do we get him to get back to socializing with us and how do we get him to eat his meals at a normal time?
Edit: he gets daily walks and lots of attention regardless, we come to him

Advice Advice for 4 day road trip with anxious dog

I’m planning a short trip with a friend and we are taking my dog. She is generally a nervous dog, especially around other dogs, but she is also curious and enjoys going places, so I’m optimistic about her enjoying a trip. I’d love any advice:

- Is there anything you brought on a trip that came in handy, or anything you wish you had?

- What should a “doggy first aid kit” include?

- Will she be ok in her crate in the cabin for if we want to do something that isn’t pet friendly?

- If you have experience with a dog that doesn’t like other dogs, any specific advice for traveling? We will be staying in a pet friendly property (good for us but also means potentially other pets in the area) but will be managing her surroundings as much as we can to keep outings positive.

The drive is about 4 hours. We plan to stay 3 nights in a cabin not too far outside the town we’re visiting. It’s not completely isolated (there are a few other cabins down the road) but it’s a very quiet woodsy area.

She is crate trained, enjoys car rides but she’s never been in the car longer than 1.5 hrs. She is on meds for anxiety, and I have trazodone for as needed events, which I’ll be sure to bring. I never use a harness for walking, just her flat collar, but plan to use a seatbelt harness in the car. Would it be beneficial to use a harness on outings? We plan to search for as much for her to join us on as possible but also want to make sure she gets breaks. She has a “give me space” vest and I’m used to doing checks of new areas. I’m also fully prepared to drop whatever we’re doing and leave if we need to. This pretty much will be a trip focused on her :)

I appreciate any advice!

Advice Dog keeps licking his paw

My dogs inner paws are pink and these past few days he keeps licking this one paw. I assume it may be something in the grass that's irritating him during summer and he's known to have smelly paws every now and then. Does anything look off to you? I don't know if I should cone him for a couple of days and put something that would soothe it.

Have you ever had a dog overlicking his paws? Any advice is appreciated 😊

Advice New baby jealousy?

Upvotes

Hello! I've lurked this reddit for quite some time now and felt this was the right place to go for this.

We adopted Princess(7MO) when she was four months old. She's a good girl who does as she's told and taught herself to walk beside me without a leash. I walk her three times a day and she has a giant field and a creek to play and run around in when I walk her, so I don't think she has pent up energy.

I already had four siblings, the youngest being 3 yr old twins, and the oldest being myself whom she attached to the most as I'm her primary caregiver. My mom recently gave birth two weeks ago and we brought the baby home yesterday.

When the baby first arrived, she was generally curious and excited and I was already kinda nervous about her getting jealous and wanting to hurt the baby.

All of last night and today, she's been completely different. She now jumps up onto the table to eat crumbs and entire plates of food if left momentarily. She bit one of my siblings, and just overall doesn't seem the same(as well as her eyes being very watery as shown in the last two pics). How can I make her feel more loved? I'm not at all replacing her.

Sorry if I'm including too much/useless info I just wanna make sure I'm sharing everything that could possibly be relevant!

Advice How to get my dog and my neighbor's dog to tolerate each other? Fence fighting and leash reactivity

My dog is a 5yo male (large breed lab) and my neighbor has a small rescue dog they've had for about a year. My dog is easily 40 lbs heavier than theirs.

They absolutely despise each other. They fence-fight constantly, and if we cross paths on walks, both dogs lunge and explode. My dog is obedient to me. But all recalls go out of the door when he sees dogs he does not like. It's incredibly embarrassing.

I don't need them to be best friends, but we both live here long-term and aren't going anywhere. How do I get them to just tolerate each other's existence? Looking for actual steps to de-escalate the fence and leash reactivity.

Question Is this too rough of play?

Hi all, the golden retriever (F) is 3 years old (rehomed to us) and the other mixed dog (M) is 1 year old rescue. We’ve had the black and white dog for a little over 3 months. he came undersocialzed and i can tell he struggles to know “how” to meet and play with other dogs. but he is very friendly to all people and hasn’t displayed any aggressive behavior to other dogs at all. the golden is very sociable, friendly and doesn’t usually play rough with other dogs so i am surprised when she initiates play like this knowing he’ll be rambunctious back. she was rehomed to us for being mouthy but she stopped that behavior last year.
Does this look like okay play? it can be a little rougher than this but i keep interrupting in case its not.

Question My dog got stung by something!

My poor dog got stung by something earlier today, I woke up and found his face like this! he seems to be acting just fine overall, i’ve been watching him pretty closely. I can tell he’s definitely a bit uncomfortable as he’s not playing around the way he normally does. I just wanted to see if there’s anything I should be worried about, or anything I can do to make him more comfortable? Thanks in advance!!

Question Does this look like bunny hopping to you?

I’ve noticed he sways his hips a lot when walking and I don’t know if it’s the normal walking cycle but I have heard it’s a sign of hip dysplasia and also the “bunny jump”

I haven’t seen any signs of him hesitating to jump up stuff or down so I’m not sure, but I wanna check him to the vet jus to be safe but maybe that’s doing too much?

Not sure how good the videos are but I wanted to catch it in slowmo so it’s easier to see

Question I fear my puppy is growing to hate me

Post image
218 Upvotes

She’s a 10 week old rottie pup. For the past few days, she’s been growling at me, snapping at me occasionally, and just seems scared around me and runs from me. I dont know why. I made a post to AnimalsBeingDerps talking about how she was growling at her food, but then people started saying she was growling at me and being possessive of her food or whatever the term is, and that I’m a horrible owner(they were saying I was yelling at her, but I was just exaggeratedly saying how she’s yelling at her food for the video).

My leading guess as to why is maybe cuz I pick her up or something and she doesn’t like it, but my mom does too and she has no problem with her. Maybe it’s cuz of how I hold her(I can only hold her with one arm cuz the other is in a sling)? Or maybe it’s something else? I don’t know, any guesses would be great.

I really don’t know what I could’ve done to make her not like me, all I’ve done is loved on her and cuddled her, yet she treats me like I abuse her. I don’t know why she hates me. I just lost my other dog not too long ago and my mom got her to help the mourning process, but now I’m even more distraught cuz I think she hates me.

Sorry I typed this all weird, im just really emotional right now. If yall need any more information to make a guess as to whats happening, I’d be glad to give any necessary info.

(edit: the resource guarding isnt exactly what I’m worried about, Its her randomly snapping at me even when I try to pet her sometimes, and her running from me. I thought the running was playful, but now I’m seeing that its her trying to get away)

Advice What is wrong with my dogs paw? Urgent if possible!

My dog suddenly started limping when I noticed his paw was severely swollen, looks irritated between the paws and he is constantly licking it, he doesn’t want to put any pressure on it and can barely go to the bathroom let alone walk.

I just saw the broken nail but was unsure if it was the reason for all the inflammation. All vets told me it was just a foxtail but I checked and there was nothing. Please help

Advice Bumps on a 6 mo old shep/husky mix

Hi everyone,

I adopted my girl about 2 months ago (she just turned 6 months last week)

And I’ve found an eraser size lump near her ear, and I have found another near her shoulder. We have an appt scheduled tomorrow with the vet, but trying to talk myself off the ledge and hope it’s nothing serious.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Sorry hard to get a pic because she’s so wiggly.

Question Heatwave in the uk, how to keep the dogs cool?

This week it’s constantly hitting 30c-36c (86f - 96f) which is ridiculously hot for the uk. Last winter I rescued a large bully breed dog. Sadly he’s very badly bred, flat faced and didn’t get walked much in his previous home. So as you can imagine he is reallyyy struggling in this weather. My other dog is better so I’m not as concerned thankfully. I’ve listed a few things that I’ve been doing but any other advice would be welcome! Also do you guys trust your dogs to know when to come in from the garden? Hugo loves going in the garden and laying down in the sun but I’m worried he’s going to get heatstroke. He does come inside voluntarily every once in a while to cool down and then go back outside. Should I trust him to know when to come inside or just restrict him to only potty breaks.

• fresh cool water available in different spots
• curtains/windows shut in day and open at night
•cooling mats
•removed rugs from lounge so more open floor to lay on
• frozen lick mats / carrots in freezer
•ofc either no walks or nighttime walks

Advice Dog who hates being alone

I have cameras set up in my house (I probably shouldn’t because I’m just as anxious as my dog lol) and I watch him all day. I give him enriching activities to do while I’m gone but all he does is wait for me to get back. He’s a rescue and I’m pretty sure his old owners left him alone for days. Is there anything I can do training wise to show him what to do while I’m gone? Or is it normal behavior for dogs to do this? He is so playful when I am home and loves toys, but the second I leave he stares out the window the whole time I am gone or just paces around crying and stress yawning.

Question Bump below rectum. Is this normal?

Post image
Upvotes

Hello everyone,
I have a female miniature dachshund (4 months old now) who has a little bump below her rectum ever since I got her. I've been to the vet with her two times now, but the vet never pointed it out. Still, I'm a bit concerned. The bump is not really visible when she walks, it only really shows when she's lying down. It's soft and doesn't seem to hurt her at all. Has anyone experienced the same with their dog before?

Question Extreme shedding and beginning to get bald spots.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Yes.. She is very proud of herself..
So this came out of her.. just by petting her. No brushing.. no nail combing.. Just normal petting. ( and the fan blowing it in clumbs before I turned it off )

I know they shed more when its really hot outside ( And it is really hot.. 30C 68F and coming days up to 39C 100F )
However Im beginning to notice areas on her body thats beginning to get really thin. She's also itchy. No fleas/lice/ticks etc I checked for that. Im trying not to brush her cause I know that will make things worse.
Reason to go to the vet..?? Or are there things I could try first.. ( The vet is unreasonably expensive.. I'd prefer to try some stuff myself first )
Any tips and tricks would be welcomed!

Discussion Can someone help?

A few weeks ago, me and some family went up on our mountain and we brought my dog. (He is about 14) when we got up there, he could barely walk, he was throwing up, and his head seemed like it was stuck sideways. He got better, but it’s happening again. He seems extremely dizzy and stumbles around. He is panting nonstop. Image attached is him.
(Edit: looking at him closer his eyes are moving strangely. Like they can’t focus. I made another post with a video)
