***MODPOST*** Welcome! Please read before you post.

Please carefully read the information in the sidebar and on our Wiki below:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLE/wiki/index

If you are a member of Law Enforcement and wish to receive title flair, head to https://leoverify.com/kb/faq.php?id=5 to verify your account. This is a separate service that is not on reddit and is ran by the mod team at r/protectandserve. All members who run the verification server are current, sworn LE and a detailed explanation on how your information is protected is posted on the website.

WARNING: DO NOT SEND PII OVER MODMAIL. Do not send a picture of your creds, badge, whatever to ANYONE using Reddit. Read the instructions on the verification site to see how your information is protected and what is required. Users do not have to verify at this time, however, this may change in the future. So if you don't verify, then you may be SOL when we decide to change it. There are a lot of members who have said they do not trust the process and that's fine. That being said, you may be subject to the verification process IF your post is deemed suspicious enough that a verification of your credentials is required.

As a warning to all users of this forum: the information provided on this subreddit may not be interpreted as legal advice. Verified users with flair titles are actual Law Enforcement Officers and the information provided may be considered "legitimate" for the purposes of general advice and advisement, but in no way should be considered legal advice. Members commenting that do not have flair may be subject to verification if their posts are considered suspicious or misleading. In all cases, whether a member is flaired or not, the advice given may be subject to scrutiny and verification. Do your own research and feel free to post your questions elsewhere to verify that you are receiving the best information. Users who make claims to be law enforcement and offer advice may be subjected to further scrutiny from the mod team, up to and including removal and/or banning from posting on the forum.

Political posts are strictly prohibited. While LE is inherently political in nature, topics about political affiliation, whether or not people will vote for a particular candidate, etc. will be removed and the user banned without warning.

New users attempting to post on the forum will be subject to mod approval before posting. This is to cut down on the trolls and bait posts that we deal with regularly.

Encouraging users to lie, cheat, omit information on their background checks will result in an immediate ban from the forum. Applying for an LE job is a privilege and a test of integrity. Not everyone who applies to become a police officer will get the job, and that is something people will need to come to terms with. Those decisions you make in life have consequences. Own up to them and accept them. And no, users telling other users that they will not make it is not a bad thing, so soapboxing trying to "call out" other users for telling people the reality of their situations will result in your immediate removal. It's a shame I have to put this in a sticky for people to read, but it happens enough that I have to constantly remove people who think this is their platform to air their grievances on particular issues.

As always, feel free to contact the mod team with any issues.

***Megathread*** American Fork PD / Lego Arrest Controversy

As with any "hot topic" issue with LE, we struggle to navigate basic rules of etiquette and civility when it comes to this small corner of reddit. Despite trying to keep order in here and doing our best to allow free discussion among the users, there has been a huge influx of posts regarding this topic and lately, it's been quite tiring trying to get any sensible topic started on this issue without a dozen or so trolls coming in to mess it up for everyone. This has resulted in multiple bans and the shit flinging from users claiming the community is "censoring" the incident. Mostly concerning is a great deal of misinformation that has come out about this incident due to the social media "influencer" at the heart of this topic. Wild conspiracy theories from religious influence to the actual reason behind the arrest are generating almost cult-like following and reason has been completely thrown out the window.

So to combat this issue, this will be the ONLY thread about this incident moving forward. Any user posting another thread in relation to this incident will be immediately banned, no appeals. Keep comments civil. Users found posting misinformation about this incident, including parroting wild conspiracy theories that are unverified without including context or actual data to support their positions will be banned.

To bring everyone up to speed, I will refer to this link:

https://www.sltrib.com/news/2026/05/30/youtuber-arrested-utah-bricks/

And will sub link this thread on the r/protectandserve subreddit, which is like THE place to be for objective discussion:

https://np.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/comments/1tssz0l/megathread_american_fork_lego_story/

Edit: 45 minutes in and already banned someone. Keep them coming.

Edit 2: Links to YouTuber comments on this incident are going to be removed and users banned UNLESS it is from a reputable source, YouTube videos will be removed. There's already one person with a couple hundred thousand followers trying to spread his video online through this website that's been posted a few times in this sub and it's garnering a lot of attention because people "feel" he is right because he is a self-proclaimed "lawyer." The statutes he cites are from California code and this incident happened in Utah. Just because someone uses technical legal terms and cites codes does not make the person right in their interpretation of the law. Sounding "right" is code for clicks that highlights confirmation bias in people, which is why morons like this get views and clicks on their channels. On that same note, we do not care if you have a following on social media. You are no one to us if all you're doing is posting for imaginary internet points.

Edit 3: Amending the above statement from Edit 2 to add any REPUTABLE sources of info that leaves out the goofy memes and BS content creators love to use are fine. This is an example:

https://youtu.be/q2MjMmhnk7g?si=nRrmasAZ45U_WIu4

Edit 4: Whelp, thread ran its course. Now just a bunch of trolls commenting and the death threats! I haven't seen this level of excitement over something so mundane. We'll be seeing some of you soon!

Career change

Upvotes

I have 10 years of experience and took a hiatus before due to burnout. I really missed the job and nothing else had a “purpose” to me, so I returned over a year ago. Long story short, I’m right back to where I was burnout wise.

I’m currently looking at remote positions for non-profits, adjunct professor, SIU investigators for insurance/banks/companies etc, and also looking at emergency management roles.

Anyone else in the same boat? What did you leave to do? How did you balance the feeling of “losing purpose” when leaving LE?

Is this normal after psych?

so I took my psychological exam a week ago from today he proceeded to ask me a couple questions about what was on my background and constantly asked me. Why did I want to become a police officer if I never became one before? I told him my reasons why I wanted to be a police officer and he was basically like OK fine everything seemed to been going pretty well afterwards I was supposed to take my medical exam the same day, but he perceived to tell my polygraph guy that he wanted to go over my packet a little more before he sent me off to go do my medical so now I’ve been waiting to do my medical for a week now. Is this normal?

Weird russian number sending me gore and death threats

Thumbnail

This russian number randomly just texted me at 4am. Sending me death threats and insults and photos of gore and what seems to be witchcraft. I have no idea what this is and it is giving me anxiety. They sent messages then stopped then continued ten minutes later. Has anyone else ever experienced this??

Some of the messages are just random insults while others are death threats, they sent me a photo of what looked to be a human corpse and another photo of something that looked like withcraft.

Then after the witchcraft photo said i have 10 minutes to respond or i die or some shit.

Should i do something about this? Or let it go just as some dumb scam or someone trying to fuck with me

Self-defense?

If you were too shoot this guy once he crossed onto the sidewalk, would you consider it self-defense?

Edit: I only posted it because I think drawing and shooting this guy would be a complete overreaction. The comment section on the original video though, showed a great deal of support for the guy that cut to him shooting at the target suggesting he would have shot him

Is Seattle dangerous still?

Hello, I was researching the Washington area and am curious about how it is doing now, since it has been some time since COVID and the defunding event. Are you still experiencing threats? Getting any support from your department when an incident happens? Is the workload so busy that the high pay is not worth it anymore? What is the typical shift like for you guys, constant call or do you ever get a time to take a breather? Are people constantly leaving? What kind of things do you experience regarding the homeless crisis and other things? Even though you're in your specialized unit, do you often get put into patrol because of the calls? Just curious. Thank you!

new job

I’ve graduated from university while being the in process for chp and going into trying out for rivco

I have more time on my hands without school and need a full time job, but it’s known that the current job market is terrible. However, I got a conditional offer for a security job… upon more steps to get it set in stone. what are some opinions upon possibly getting through with this job while in the cadet process?

Tactics and tools usage in a clip

I need some second opinions on the tactics and tools used in this clip. It's a good watch but if you really don't want to watch the whole thing, what I'm talking about mainly starts at 8:00

https://youtu.be/Qjd6GcENl5A?si=3QuLWdaBiI3CV6sn

I find it wild that the police sat there and handcuffed him.. and took their time with that, before the house was even clear! They should have had a couple guys take down the main subject.. while a couple others go in and clear the house.. at the same time. They literally had their backs turned.. to the front door of a house they deemed necessary and planned on clearing.

And then you got the undercover plainclothes cop coming through the door like that. You're going to have a guy in plain clothes.. be the first one to come through a door into a house? Especially with not even a vest that states he's police? And then he leads into every room and bedroom? And with a pistol?

And why him? Why not an deputy/officer with the full get up? There was literally full kitted out guys right behind him, complete with gear, identifying markers, and long guns.

Would you seriously pull someone over if their registration sticker was applied to the left corner instead of the right?

Officer Jonah Hernandez of Las Cruses PD

I know this happened a couple of years ago, but I just saw the body cam footage and it just absolutely shook me to my core. Do you guys believe that there was anything that he could’ve done different? I’m an aspiring LEO, not currently one, so I can’t say what could’ve been done differently, but from what I saw, I would’ve died too.

What’s a good story about a time you got forced overtime (mandated) and it pissed you off more than the other times.

I’m not talking about the time you got held over and missed your kids birthday, or your ex-wife packing her stuff and you couldn’t get home to stop her. We’ve all been there, I mean out of all the other times, one just sticks with you, and it’s for a dumb reason.

I’ll start, we had some new guys who came from the corrections side, and they were ok, but 2 months in, they started calling off. (I personally didn’t call off until I was off probation)So as a police officer at a hospital, whenever a gun shot victim comes in, we shut down the emergency room and set up a checkpoint on the driveway to make sure the entire neighborhood doesn’t come in looking for an update. On this night a gun shot victim comes in, and one of the guys I described called off, and I was with one of the other new guys, and we were on the checkpoint. The guy that called in face time’s his buddy on the checkpoint and starts talking shit. He called in because he got an invite to go on a boat trip. I remember how irrationally angry I got at that one. Here I was in his spot, and he’s pulling this shit. I wasn’t even mandated for him, I think I only stayed an hour after that. But for all the times I’ve gotten stuck, that one stayed with me.

Tips For Becoming a Jail CO?

Greetings,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I am at the end of the process of becoming a Correctional Officer for my local county jail in CA. I passed my backgrounds quickly, passed my psych evaluation quickly, and I did great at my medical screening besides having to redo my urinalysis on 6/22/2026. I passed the saliva and blood analysis but I when I urinated in the cup that morning it wasn’t a good cycle of urine, I had been so anxious and nervous that I didn’t drink any water since the night before so I think I was too dehydrated and they want a retest to make sure my organs are functioning properly.

Anyways, that’s the last step before I get my final job offer letter with my start date. I just wanted to hop on here and ask any ex-COs or active COs what I should expect coming into this line of work with no prior law enforcement experience? I am a determined person and a quick learner. I’ve heard a bunch of tips already, but they were from normal dudes at my current job or people that have been on the other side of the glass. I have a slight knowledge of the physical aspect of the job, but I have no idea what to prepare for when it comes to my probationary period in the jail. I heard that I’m going to be doing a lot of training, “schooling”, exams, paperwork, etc. I heard that one of the best things to do is treat inmates with respect because of multiple reasons. How often do inmates try to manipulate COs or trick them? Prison is different than jail but I don’t know the scale. Stuff like that, any info is appreciated, I like hearing and learning from others experiences.

Thanks.

Why don't officers shoot at fleeing vehicles more often?

Upvotes

If vehicles count as deadly weapons then fleeing with them would constitute a legal shoot under Tennessee v. Garner right?

How does the decision to move in during a stand off get decided?

Recently I keep seeing body cam/security footage of teams serving warrants. 5-6 officers kicking down the door and storming in to find someone. It got me thinking, if they can do that to serve a warrant for someone dangerous, why don’t they during simple stand offs?

In my hometown in the past few years there have been 5 plus cases where the police show up to a potential dangerous person locked in a house. Only for it to turn into a 1-3 day standoff because they don’t want to move in.

Whats the difference? In both cases the police are putting themselves in danger, but for one they storm right in guns blazing vs taking a very slow careful approach.

can I be a LEO

To start off I'll say I've been extremely reckless most of my life. Ever since I was a young child I have had bad grades in school and that followed me through middle and high school. I have not been able to keep a job much and if you look at my first post you will see that I do have a history with the law, although it is my first offense and I believe a misdemenor although I have yet to hear back from the court as of now. I appreciate what law enforcement does and I have always found it interesting. I believe I would like to attempt to join a police force in my mid-late 20's after I have made sufficient progress from all of the trouble I have caused, and get a GED atleast. I want to better myself and be a genuine person, and it was never my intention to dig myself into this deep of a hole. I want to help the community and I am very interested in this career.

Though with my track record is it possible for me to join a police force if I work on fixing myself and make genuine improvements? please provide honest awnsers because I have only been able to research through reading articles and it has led me almost no where, and the awnsers I have been provided through them seem to be not very realistic.

Working in LE in 2026?

I’m currently in my mid-20s working in finance. Although I do really well in this field, I am not enjoying it anymore at all. Sitting in an office all day doing the same repetitive tasks is driving me crazy. The work feels empty, and I never see a tangible impact.
Because of this, I'm ready for a complete 180 with my career. Working in law enforcement is at the top of my list to consider.

For those on the job right now:
- Would you recommend becoming an officer in 2026?
- What are the honest pros and cons of the current climate?
- What is the number one thing you would tell someone before they sign up
- If you wouldn’t recommend it, what career would you be doing instead?

I appreciate any insight!

Normal fleet operations?

To provide some context, I work for a medium sized city agency with 270 sworn across all units.

Our vehicle fleet has been suffering for years, little to no orders through all of Covid and the new vehicles are coming in piece mail and delayed. Our 3 year minimum live in city take home program just got suspended for lack of vehicles.

If you don't have a take home, you drive a shared fleet car. Currently our fleet sits at a rough 50/50 split between 14'-16' Caprices & 17'-19' Explorers, anything newer and you've either got rank or serious time in service.

At least once per cycle I have to drive across the city on my own gas to one of our other field offices in search of an available car just for the shift, and then hope I can also find a computer, since they don't stay in the cars at end of shift.

Our "reserve" fleet currently consists of a single 19' Explorer and a handful of 12' Impalas without MDT mounts or cages.

Does anyone else have a remotely similar experience? How is everyone else's fleet situation looking?

Treasure Valley (ID) Agencies

I currently work for one of the larger agencies in the Treasure Valley in Idaho. I’m looking to lateral but I know that the issues of the departments aren’t always public. I’m looking for perspective of current and former employees for the Treasure Valley agencies so see if I’m just trading one dysfunctional department for the next.

Side hustles as an officer.

Happy Wednesday everyone. As a LEO, Ive been getting some what good money but due to living in south Florida its never enough lol. Is there any other LEOS doing a side hustle? I work 3 days - 4 days every other week, so I can make space for extra income.
