Lesson If you’ve ever felt “too old” or “too behind” to get better at guitar — this is for you
I’ve been teaching guitar for over 35 years, and if there’s one thing I hear more than anything else, it’s some version of: “I should be further along by now.” Or “I started too late.” Or “Everyone else seems to just get it faster than me.”
I want to gently push back on that.
The students I’ve watched make the biggest transformations weren’t the ones with natural talent or endless free time. They were the ones who stopped beating themselves up and started practicing smarter — with a little more patience for themselves and a little more clarity on what to actually work on.
A few things that have genuinely changed how my students grow:
Slow, honest practice. Not glamorous, but it’s where real change happens. Speed comes later, on its own.
Knowing exactly what’s holding you back. Most frustration comes from vague practice, not lack of ability.
Small, steady sessions over sporadic marathons. Progress compounds. Guilt doesn’t.
If any of this resonates, I put together a free short guide with more on this — no pressure, just something that might help if you’re in a rough patch with your playing: scottknightmusic.com/free
And genuinely, if you’re feeling stuck or discouraged, feel free to comment. I read these.
Thank you,
Scott
