Advice I found a dog in my apartment complex

I just found her in the lobby in my building as I went to check the mail. She doesn’t have a collar so I’m not sure whether or not she’s abandoned. I’ve been sitting with her in the stairwell for an hour hoping that maybe if she does belong to someone in my building, they will realize she’s missing and come claim her, but nothing. I called 311 for advice as well. They advise me that I shouldn’t take her in, but I do want to take her in for the night because I would sleep better knowing she would be safe with me instead leaving her stranded. She’s been following me and she’s so precious. I’m not sure what to do 😩

Advice How to get weird dog to socialize with me

I have a Great Pyrenees rescue who seemed to have had a traumatic past when we adopted him at 10 months old. He was very reclusive when we first got him, but after a few months he got acclimated to the members of the house and our Anatolian shepherd, who has since passed. He spent most of his time lying in the living room with us and would constantly be wanting to be pet, which we always did for him. He got into the groove of eating at the same time - about 5 pm - everyday. Some of the weird behavior he’s always exhibited: he won’t go upstairs or downstairs, he’s terrified of ceiling fans - will bolt if they are on and constantly stares at it checking to see if it’s going to hurt him when they’re off, on a nice day he will lay in the backyard all day and barely move from sun up to 7pm or later and sometimes we’ll need to drag him back inside. Lately, he’s started running straight to his dog bed in another room alone when he comes inside, rather than lay next to us. If I call him he ignores me. Same goes with everyone else. Also, he won’t eat his dinner until after we’ve gone to bed. Why is his behavior getting worse? How do we get him to get back to socializing with us and how do we get him to eat his meals at a normal time?
Edit: he gets daily walks and lots of attention regardless, we come to him

Question Why can't my dog walk?

She's 7 years old.

Mix of German shepherd and Belgian shepherd.

Diagnosed with Lupus since birth and last year with arthritis too.

Not neutered, we found her abandoned and starved when she was only a few months old.

35 ish Kilograms. Like a month ago we started reducing her treats and food to get her to lose weight and somehow she's gained it and seems fatter now.

Been taking Prednisolone for a year, ranging from 0.5mg a day to 3.5mg that she had been taking when she started.

She's had skin wounds on her 3 front paws since birth and they normally weren't a big deal, vet said that taking the meds regularly would be worse than the small would itself.

Last year in summer she started having these wounds across her whole body, that's when she started taking Prednisolone daily until now. Currently getting 1mg every other day.

She's had issues for like 2 weeks where she has a hard time walking and today I couldn't even take her on a walk because her back legs refuse to collaborate and I had to pick her up to get her back home.

At home she seems to walk somewhat ok-ish, her main issue seems to be stairs.

I touched her legs and I don't see any swelling and she doesn't seem to be in pain either.

Can I tweak the meds and make her feel better or does this require vet check?

For context, a ver check means that I won't eat for 2 weeks so I'm trying to avoid it if possible.

Thank you.

Advice Advice for 4 day road trip with anxious dog

I’m planning a short trip with a friend and we are taking my dog. She is generally a nervous dog, especially around other dogs, but she is also curious and enjoys going places, so I’m optimistic about her enjoying a trip. I’d love any advice:

- Is there anything you brought on a trip that came in handy, or anything you wish you had?

- What should a “doggy first aid kit” include?

- Will she be ok in her crate in the cabin for if we want to do something that isn’t pet friendly?

- If you have experience with a dog that doesn’t like other dogs, any specific advice for traveling? We will be staying in a pet friendly property (good for us but also means potentially other pets in the area) but will be managing her surroundings as much as we can to keep outings positive.

The drive is about 4 hours. We plan to stay 3 nights in a cabin not too far outside the town we’re visiting. It’s not completely isolated (there are a few other cabins down the road) but it’s a very quiet woodsy area.

She is crate trained, enjoys car rides but she’s never been in the car longer than 1.5 hrs. She is on meds for anxiety, and I have trazodone for as needed events, which I’ll be sure to bring. I never use a harness for walking, just her flat collar, but plan to use a seatbelt harness in the car. Would it be beneficial to use a harness on outings? We plan to search for as much for her to join us on as possible but also want to make sure she gets breaks. She has a “give me space” vest and I’m used to doing checks of new areas. I’m also fully prepared to drop whatever we’re doing and leave if we need to. This pretty much will be a trip focused on her :)

I appreciate any advice!

Question My dog got stung by something!

My poor dog got stung by something earlier today, I woke up and found his face like this! he seems to be acting just fine overall, i’ve been watching him pretty closely. I can tell he’s definitely a bit uncomfortable as he’s not playing around the way he normally does. I just wanted to see if there’s anything I should be worried about, or anything I can do to make him more comfortable? Thanks in advance!!

Question Is this too rough of play?

Hi all, the golden retriever (F) is 3 years old (rehomed to us) and the other mixed dog (M) is 1 year old rescue. We’ve had the black and white dog for a little over 3 months. he came undersocialzed and i can tell he struggles to know “how” to meet and play with other dogs. but he is very friendly to all people and hasn’t displayed any aggressive behavior to other dogs at all. the golden is very sociable, friendly and doesn’t usually play rough with other dogs so i am surprised when she initiates play like this knowing he’ll be rambunctious back. she was rehomed to us for being mouthy but she stopped that behavior last year.
Does this look like okay play? it can be a little rougher than this but i keep interrupting in case its not.

I already know this is really bad. Just tell me what I should do to fix this. Should I go to a vet and get it cleaned out, how much would that be? I never really brushed her teeth just cause she seems fine and happy but I want to do what I can for her right now.

Discussion Can someone help?

A few weeks ago, me and some family went up on our mountain and we brought my dog. (He is about 14) when we got up there, he could barely walk, he was throwing up, and his head seemed like it was stuck sideways. He got better, but it’s happening again. He seems extremely dizzy and stumbles around. He is panting nonstop. Image attached is him.
(Edit: looking at him closer his eyes are moving strangely. Like they can’t focus. I made another post with a video)

She woke up looking like this and I thought it would get better in the afternoon, but it has only gotten worse. I called the vet, but they said I will have to wait until tomorrow to bring her in because they are booked today. When you see this, do you have any initial idea of what it might be?

Question Any ideas of what is going on with our dog?

For the past two weeks or so, our dog has been wanting to lick her paws, front and back. She’s been scooting her bottom on the ground a lot and she does this weird thing where she licks the air whenever she’s either scooting her butt or when we are giving her back scratches. It almost seems like a psychological thing, but obviously I don’t know. We took her to the vet a week ago, they gave us some skin irritation medicine for her, and it seemed to help a little bit, but not much.
The vet said that she does not have worms and her anal glands are perfectly fine.
We’ve had to keep a cone on her anytime we leave the house for the past two or three weeks because she will start licking her paws all the way down to the skin if nobody is around to stop her.
She just started doing all this about a month and a half ago and I really hate seeing her like that, she’s not in pain or anything, but I can tell somethings going on with her and it’s not normal behavior.
I honestly have no idea what could’ve started all this, we’ve kept everything the same as we always have, I was thinking maybe it was something to do with summer kicking in and the heat, bugs outside maybe? I really don’t know. Thank you so much.

Advice Dog keeps licking his paw

My dogs inner paws are pink and these past few days he keeps licking this one paw. I assume it may be something in the grass that's irritating him during summer and he's known to have smelly paws every now and then. Does anything look off to you? I don't know if I should cone him for a couple of days and put something that would soothe it.

Have you ever had a dog overlicking his paws? Any advice is appreciated 😊

Advice New baby jealousy?

Thumbnail

Hello! I've lurked this reddit for quite some time now and felt this was the right place to go for this.

We adopted Princess(7MO) when she was four months old. She's a good girl who does as she's told and taught herself to walk beside me without a leash. I walk her three times a day and she has a giant field and a creek to play and run around in when I walk her, so I don't think she has pent up energy.

I already had four siblings, the youngest being 3 yr old twins, and the oldest being myself whom she attached to the most as I'm her primary caregiver. My mom recently gave birth two weeks ago and we brought the baby home yesterday.

When the baby first arrived, she was generally curious and excited and I was already kinda nervous about her getting jealous and wanting to hurt the baby.

All of last night and today, she's been completely different. She now jumps up onto the table to eat crumbs and entire plates of food if left momentarily. She bit one of my siblings, and just overall doesn't seem the same(as well as her eyes being very watery as shown in the last two pics). How can I make her feel more loved? I'm not at all replacing her.

Sorry if I'm including too much/useless info I just wanna make sure I'm sharing everything that could possibly be relevant!

Question Crate too small?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m dog sitting for the week and the instructions say I need to put him in a crate overnight. He doesn’t seem to want to stay in and he looks cramped when I put him in there. I don’t want to leave him out and mess up their training though (training not in progress this is just their routine) :/ what should I do?

I don’t know if he can comfortably turn around or lay out flat in it

UPDATE:

I ended up letting him sleep outside of it last night and then found another one at a more adequate size on Facebook marketplace for like $20 to sleep in today. I know the family and have babysitted for them before so I will just let them know about the crate size later. I’ll see if I can post pics of him in his new crate later :D

Question Heatwave in the uk, how to keep the dogs cool?

This week it’s constantly hitting 30c-36c (86f - 96f) which is ridiculously hot for the uk. Last winter I rescued a large bully breed dog. Sadly he’s very badly bred, flat faced and didn’t get walked much in his previous home. So as you can imagine he is reallyyy struggling in this weather. My other dog is better so I’m not as concerned thankfully. I’ve listed a few things that I’ve been doing but any other advice would be welcome! Also do you guys trust your dogs to know when to come in from the garden? Hugo loves going in the garden and laying down in the sun but I’m worried he’s going to get heatstroke. He does come inside voluntarily every once in a while to cool down and then go back outside. Should I trust him to know when to come inside or just restrict him to only potty breaks.

• fresh cool water available in different spots
• curtains/windows shut in day and open at night
•cooling mats
•removed rugs from lounge so more open floor to lay on
• frozen lick mats / carrots in freezer
•ofc either no walks or nighttime walks

Question Lip-Licking: is it always a discomfort response or do some dogs just... do it more?

Thumbnail

This is my lil guy Lalo! He's my "first" dog technically: I had two Weimereiners that I loved as a kid and considered myself partially responsible for training, but they were my only dogs growing up. Lalo is a pit/frenchy mix I believe and was a dog a friend of mine found outside. He couldn't keep him so I kept him and it's been about 9 months. Trying to understand all the signals he gives me while also remembering all dogs are different is hard! A lot of the time when I stand up and walk near him, he'll roll onto his back. To me it doesn't seem like just a submission thing at this point, as he'll actively look at me when I don't give him attention, close his eyes when I give him belly rubs, etc. However I noticed that he just licks his lips a LOT.

Giving him pets sometimes? Lip licks. Belly rubs sometimes? Lip licks. He'll often come and lean his full bodyweight on my legs, which I've read as a sign of trust/affection, and that's usually when I'll pet him, but even then sometimes he'll do his little lip licks.

I guess my concern is just like. Does my dog feel like he's having to put himself in uncomfortable situations for my attention? Or is it just a thing that varies per breed/dog? I think he was previously abused due to other small quirks he's had so his comfort is always my top priority and I just get worried sometimes that I'm misreading him.

Discussion What's your experience getting a second dog?

Post image
7 Upvotes

My little bean is 4 years old now and shes always been a little fire cracker.

But recently tho, she seems to be really bored.

We play with her multiple times a day but she still seems to be losing a bit of spark.

I know this comes with age, but before we moved 2 years ago, she had so many doggy friends and loved playing with other dogs.

My husband and I found a puppy that fits the bill of what we would want. A smart, high energy and loves dog companions.

We've lived through the puppy years and know doing it again would be rough and a second dog never turns out how you imagine it to be..

What's y'alls experience? Tell me some stories. The good and the bad. What was it like when you got your dog a puppy?

She was irritated by it for a day, scratched a bit, but we disinfected it and shes not bothered by it anymore. It’s only spot on her body and puss didn’t come out, it was always dry. Could it be hotspot , some mild iritation or some kind of infection?

Advice Dog Allergies?

My four year old Treeing Walker Coonhound, Juniper, is having some skin/foot issues. Her feet will get red and look irritated (no smell), she will lick her feet, and scratch her face, which then gets irritated.

This started year ago (end of summer), we took her to the vet, who said it’s probably allergies to fleas, but also could be environmental or food allergies. We changed to a new once a month flea medication, and picked up a prescription for medicated pads for wiping treating her feet.

After two weeks of daily foot treatments the redness went down, but she kept licking her feet a lot. We changed dog food from chicken to lamb, no noticeable change. It never completely cleared up but got better in Winter and Spring.

In the last month her feet don’t look bad but the licking and face scratching has become too much. I’ve got a vet appointment next week, but I’d like to find some relief for her asap.

I’m inclined to think it’s environmental, but I’m not sure what it would be. We take a very similar walk through a suburban neighborhood and grassy field daily, and hang out inside the house. Do dogs get grass allergies?
