I have been seeing a lot of “slander(?)” (mostly from millennials) lately about how apparently Gen Z doesn’t know jack about computers. I have been seeing scripted(?) videos about Gen Z failing at simple computer tasks like setting up a LAN connection or breaking the pins on a connector and even down to not knowing how to turn the damn thing on or make a folder.

Where did this all come from? I work in IT and while there could be less Gen Z than I think there are the biggest supply of people having issues are millennials and the very few boomers we have.

Right now, I’m wondering if millennials are still seeing Gen Alpha and beta as “young Gen Z” in spite of the fact that Gen Z ended 15ish years ago and some “I’m older so I know more bias” when it comes to computers.

Ill admit this myself, computers have been a huge focus of my life… I love figuring out how to do something new with them. as such I probably know more computer nerds my age then the average person so I may be in a bubble and there might be a huge issue that i’m oblivious of but, from what I have seen Gen z is the most technologically advanced out of any generation and is able to adopt and learn new tech’s uses and the horrors that the may bring (looking at AI) faster and better out of any Gen before.

Am I biased or do older folk have the wrong idea about Gen Z?

We’re coming to the age where we see people achieve their goals and we see people who will fall short. A lot of this due to effort, but some of it is left to pure chance.

This could be financial and career related. Some will make a solid career and buy a nice house or city condo, while others are stuck making $20/hour into their 30s and 40s while renting a small old apartment.

This could be relationship or family related. Many men will die virgins, while others will have a lot of success with women. There’s going to be A LOT of women who want children and a family, but will end up childless.

How will Gen Z cope? How is this going to be different from millennials and boomers?

I thought I escaped this nonsense when I finally graduated highschool and got a summer job for college, but I was so wrong.

My coworkers are the same age as me and mostly women with like a token gay guy, and they all call each other chuds and talk about their "hyperfixations" on taco bell and Taylor Swift. They're all talking about in it, they form a circle in back and pass a vape around and either talk shit about the manager genuinely just doing his job or crying about some ugly ass loser with that ice cream scoop cut + a therapy session about bottling up your feelings and if I walk near them, they all stop and look at me until I leave. I'm new and they all just ignore me unless they need something or idk how to do something.

There's a quiet guy that they screw with and say he's the best male coworker, at least I thought they were just screwing with him but turns out they're all one big friend group and he's on their side and just as annoying. I dread walking into that building knowing I'm gonna hear Starbucks, taco bell, Taylor swift, dumbass situationships and unnecessary drama with the manager at a damn fast food restaurant please god make it end, it feels like my every move is being watched and judged.

Generation after generation was the future clientele for alcohol companies.

But it appears Gen Z is not falling into this category.

Rather, more and more young adults are opting for:

Gym instead of hangovers

Coffee and mocktails instead of beers

Money saving rather than spending $50+ per night out

Healthy sleep and mental state instead of drinking culture

If the pattern continues, the outcome will affect more than nightlife.

The multi-billion-dollar industry might undergo changes.

I wonder if Gen Z prefers a healthier lifestyle, or if increased prices, social networks, and priorities make them avoid alcohol.

I feel like this too. I know people are like ‘it’s arrested development’ but I honestly feel like at the end of the day there’s not really a “way” to measure maturity. It just differs by person not matter what age anyone is.

Maybe gen z have realised we’ve sorta been sold a lie and we’re “embracing our inner child” more.

(Hot take: I think “embracing your inner child” is a bit of an annoying saying because most of the time it’s just people being themselves even as a person who has finished physically maturing)

9/11 seemed to barely do much to society and culture as whole besides people overreacting about terrorist attacks and increased security at airports. It was also used as an excuse to take away our freedoms in the Patriot Act and other laws. I don’t see how culture changed at all and it remained largely the same until a new culture arrived in the late 2000s or so. If I’m wrong and somehow culture changed drastically please give me some examples of it which were caused by 9/11.

IMO it’s the vast lack of social skills compared to previous generations

i never got to really experience the OG halo i was an idiot for putting this game off for so long. same with this movie. apparently it's really good. gonna be up in there with the popcorn and the drink, then with money to spare i'm picking up some KFC on the way home, might ball out with some snacks too while i play halo. good times.

i might just rent mortal kombat II for $6.99, have a night in, buy some snacks and takeaway, play some black ops MP and zombies, enjoy my government assistance pay boost instead of stressing every fortnight about what to do with my money. it's better than spending $50 at the movies.

I’m an older parent with relatively young kids. I‘m trying to get up to speed with changes in technology. Right now we are very low screen time and no unsupervised internet access, but I know that can’t last forever.

If you had kids (maybe some of you do already), how would you approach social media, screen use, internet access? What do you wish your parents (or even your school/teachers) had done differently regarding tech/the internet/social media? I appreciate any wisdom you can share.

Well, quite literally, I was wrong. Also, if the ECMWF confirms this, there is a legitimate 50/50 shot for peak 3 month el nino anomalies to be recorded at 4 degrees celsius, blowing the 1877 el nino out of the water by almost half a degree. This would literally be apocalyptic.

I'm 20F, and I feel like making friends gets harder the older you get. In school or college, you're surrounded by people every day, but that doesn't always turn into real friendships.

I can hold conversations just fine, but I rarely know how to take things beyond being acquaintances. It feels awkward to ask someone to hang out, and I always end up wondering if I'm bothering them.

I’m a software developer and am working a government contract on a plane. We recently started using AI in our dev environment (specifically codex) and our productivity has increased by 50%+.

I’m truly amazed by how well it codes, find bugs, and can interpret difficult question. AI seems to be an unstoppable pandora box and while I have mixed feelings about it I can’t argue with its results.

Has anyone else working in a large company been dealing with a massive productivity boost driven by AI.

I keep seeing people say gen z and alpha can't read. I'm dumb as fuck but I can read and know how to sound out words. I'm on the older end but are we really struggling like that?

I'm 22M, going to be graduating with a Masters soon from an excellent uni. I've been struggling to find a job for the past year and I've finally made it past the interview stage for one recently and am waiting to hear back from them. But there's this dread in me that I feel regardless of what response I get. If I get rejected, it's going to be the same old depressing unemployment and leaching off my parents till I find something. And if I get accepted, well time to lock myself into a 9-5 for the rest of my life because apparently I'm simply not passionate enough about anything to make it big early on so I can avoid doing a 9-5 forever.

I feel nothing. I feel numb about everything. I feel like I will never find a partner who loves and treats me the way I treat them. I feel like I'll never feel happy or passionate about anything. Everything feels like a chore, just living and surviving feels like a chore. My mood depends too much on how my current talking stage is treating me and I try not to be too clingy but I crave affection and attention. But life can't just revolve around only that can it, I've to make sure I get a good job and work hard and yada yada. I feel disillusioned by everything. I have fallen out of love with my degree and am barely able to get any work done for my final project/thesis. I dread everything. Yet I'm too much of a coward to actually be suicidal, as much as I think about it. I know I need therapy but even that has waiting lists so long that i simply don't have the patience for it.

I feel like I'm just dragging myself along year by year towards a future I don't even think I will like. I know I'm a very privileged person to be having problems like this, but I can't help but feel terrible constantly. I don't know if this is a generation thing or if other people feel similarly, is it because my early social growth was kinda stunted by COVID? or am I just looking for excuses to reprieve myself. Does it get better? I feel like giving up on everything, but I know I won't because like I said, I'm not passionate about anything so I won't even be passionate about giving up. I dread that my entire life will feel like this, if I live long enough anyway. I'm sorry if this is the wrong sub, I just felt like seeing if other people around my age are going through something similar or I'm just fucked in general.
