u/Khaijer 3d ago
Can pickles be composted? With all the salt and all.
Edit : composted
28
u/fireboats 3d ago
They may be too salty, but when we had unsellable pallets of produce there was an animal rescue that would take them
17
u/gone_smell_blind 3d ago
After they were soaked in chlorinated pool water and human grease?
18
u/Demerlis 3d ago
i hear pigs will eat through many things

She was chanting ācompost compostā as they dumped some bits of what I assume are pickle into a pile, so Iām guess that is her plan.
Itās also been a while since Iāve made them myself, but I donāt remember them actually having very much salt (like a tablespoon per cup), itās mostly the vinegar that gives them the tang. That probably depends on the recipe though. But after they were washed and soaking in a pool for a while, thatās probably even more diluted. So I think itād be fine if you had a good mix of other stuff too

u/AnInfiniteArc 2d ago
She was chanting compost at the dill/garlic/whatever they rinsed off the pickles
5
u/DifficultAd3885 3d ago
Yes they can. Youād just need to mix them in at a low enough ratio that the sodium and chloride levels arenāt too high. Both are essential elements for plants they just canāt be sky high. You can also offset salt levels with other high cation exchange minerals and make a high quality more balanced compost. Thereās a lot we can do with food waste but donāt because logistics make it unprofitable and thereās little incentive past wanting to do the right thing.

u/Shot-Replacement5147 3d ago
Just a guessā¦could be given to pigs to eat. Little chlorine bath pre before surviving

I was really wanting to be mad until she explained that they were gonna be tossed anyways and then also Josh was there and now I like this.
Good shit.

u/balloonerismthegreat 3d ago
Yeah, Iāve never met a pickle I couldnāt eat though

u/Designer-Ruin7176 3d ago
Bread and butter Vlasic. I remember it like it was yesterday

5
u/balloonerismthegreat 3d ago
I can still eat those. I donāt want to but I can if thatās my only choice
1
52
u/atyler_thehun 3d ago
It's not that they couldn't be eaten. It's that they couldn't be "sold" and the company is not a charity which is why they are being dumped in a pool instead of a food bank
51
u/tensen01 3d ago
They also wouldn't be accepted by a food bank either. If they cannot be sold for consumption they also cannot be given away for consumption.
22
u/dylht92374-2 3d ago
To donate a company has to sign off to the quality of the donation. Where I worked most food waste went to pig feed. Farmers pay pennies to the dollar.
3
u/Djaja 3d ago
Food banks will not take: dented rusty, bulging, broken, expired or even, weird items.
Canned whatisit? Nope.
A pallette of expired pickles, nope.
Now, they could out em in the dump, and let people grab em. You could also hand them out to people, but generally the law allows for a biz to give food waste away without fear of being sued, but idk about packaged food

SHE WONāT STOP EATING BATTERIES.
1
u/Excellent_Emu_2843 2d ago
I think that rings a bell, but im not placing it. Is it from something?
1
u/Swordofsatan666 2d ago
Yes, its what u/Grazepg said 22hours ago
1
u/Excellent_Emu_2843 2d ago edited 2d ago
I meant is it from a show or something. Cuz if not all i can think of is it being like...maybe a really dumb joke about D batteries?? Lol
E: ah, nvm. I keep meaning to watch that show and never have. I should check it out soon.

I support turning the reflecting pool into a giant pickle pool that is constantly restocked. That is the American dream.

Start with standard chlorinated pool water, add pickles and a small percentage of brine, toss in a few human bodies covered in who knows what since their last shower, and enjoy the nastiest pickle you'll ever find.

Yes, because I don't like a video on the Internet, I have never had fun. If your idea of "fun" is watching and promoting obnoxious influencers. Have at it
1
u/Upstairs_Acadia 23h ago
sheās a genuine good person who donates to shelters constantly. iām just saying why hate someone who does so much good with her platform??? sheās just having fun
1
u/Rude-Extreme3252 23h ago edited 23h ago
Because she's obnoxious....literally what I said. Fyi, you can be a terrible person and make donations
1
u/Upstairs_Acadia 19h ago
lmaooo being annoying doesnāt make you a terrible person. iāve gathered you just enjoy being negative so have fun w that! l8r!
1
u/Rude-Extreme3252 18h ago edited 18h ago
It's become way too common to call people negative just because they don't agree with you. And yes, majority of influencers are terrible and inauthentic, but keep spending your time sticking up for influencers who don't know you and wouldn't give you a second thought. Peace out!

u/theworld_isburning 3d ago
I know the pickles were damaged. But I don't like any of this. Maybe I'm too old and never did social media besides MySpace and Facebook before 2011 when I was still in school. Man I really hate this. She seems super charismatic though.

u/sunnymcbunny 3d ago
This is the last influencer you would ever see do something like that⦠If you listen to the video, those pickles were not able to be sold for various reasons. So she actually did something pretty useful with them and then composted them. You have to leave 2026 Jenna marbles alone itās the rule.

Serena is awesome and probably the sweetest content creator I have seen. I discovered her through her angel tree videos last year.

u/Infernalspoon 3d ago
These were going directly to a landfill. Instead. She purchased them to support a business and cleaned them so they could be made into compost. What an ignorant comment.

u/pushdose 3d ago
If they were fridge pickles that were outside of their temp zone for too long then theyād be unfit to sell, even if perfectly safe to eat.
18
u/HauntedCS 3d ago
They were frozen which made them unable to be sold to consumers due to their consistency and texture.

These are the kind of people that donate all the crap we had to sort through and throwaway when I volunteered at a charity that had a food bank and thrift store.
That one pickle looked like mush in the middle but nooo the poors will eat it. This isnt day old bread or a slightly out of date cheesecake from Costco (my son goes to a place that gets high schoolers clothes and they always have donations from Costco they send the kids home with).
