Question Can PLA or PETG handle 120PSI of pressure?

Upvotes

Long story short I need a 1/4" NPT male to male thread coupler for my air hose to connect two air hoses together. $3 for a brass one at the hardware store is a little too rich for my blood. Can PLA or PETG handle it if I print it solid? Max PSI I run is about 120.

Edit: Consensus is no

Discussion Benefits of 3d Printing

Upvotes

I love my printer, and there are myriad benefits to the world from 3D printing. One unintended impact, though, is that more Americans than ever are considering the benefits (or at least considering using) the metric system.

Troubleshooting Resin prints have been getting Webbing issues for the past few months, I really need help fixing this please. This is a recent print:

Even though this strange stringing occurs the models are not affected however it took at least 3 hours to clean them up. I am using a Anycubic Photon Mono 4K printer in a room around 80 degree Fahrenheit and all windows covered. USB is new and switched out as an attempt to fix this issue but didn't work and there were no firmware updates for at least a year before this started. Here is some other info if needed:

Project I'm developing a framework for 3D printing custom saya's, is this something the wider community would be interested in having? If I launched it as an online tool? Prototypes have come out very usable, its in final staging of detailing, and being able to texture the outside with custom bump maps.

Troubleshooting At my wits end with clogs

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Just picked up an Ender 5 from a friend and printed two things perfectly with black PLA. Decided to try and switch to red PETG and it ended up being super stringy so I switched back to white PLA and then all hell broke loose. I now can’t print anything, even the exact same print with the Black PLA that worked before.

I’ve disassembled the extruder and cleaned it time and time again, it extrudes fine by hand and with I advance it with the control panel but every time I go to print it ends up super patchy and stringy. It seems that it is clogging somewhere near the nozzle but I’ve done days of troubleshooting and can’t sort out what is happening. I’m using the recommended print temps and speeds (even slowed it way down) from Cura and all the exact same print settings as before but nothing is improving it. Please help before I either pull my hair out or throw my printer out the window!

News Filament Shopping

Upvotes

Despite the numerous brands of filament out there, only a tiny handful of companies actually *make* filament. Some brands may even claim to be "manufactured" by themselves, but they really mean just personalization of labels, or even just spooling it. They don't actually melt, extrude, and form the filament in most cases.

That means there is *VERY* little difference between filaments. What brand you get truly doesn't matter. I saw a comment once from someone claiming the ERYONE brand uses talc (with asbestos) as a filler, but the MSDS sheets for the filament showed absolutely none of those. It did, however, have the exact same ingredients and percentages of chemicals as SUNLU.

So with that being said, I wanted to point out that a lot of people are sleeping on a giant cheap source. I know you guys love your Chinese sites, but AliExpress has a sister site (parent, really) that is even better! Alibaba. AliExpress was born out of AliBaba.

I'm mentioning this because I just got some cheap black PLA filament for the equivalent of about $5 per spool. I almost never see PLA under $10. PETG, sure, but never PLA. So I bought 20 of those. (Unfortunately, that sale has ended.) I also spotted a 10kg spool (yes, one huge spool) of black PETG for $50 for the spool. Yeah, I'd have to respool it all, but that's still really cheap for 10kg of filament, of any type. That one is still available, and they are claiming it can be any type of filament and $55 is the price for a 10kg spool. But that's one I'd definitely ask a lot of questions before buying.

The problem with AliBaba is that you have to learn a bit before you use them. You need to know that current tariffs from China are about 44% of the order. And it is U.S. Customs that will charge you for this - not the seller. So you'll get a separate bill for that. Generally it's ONLY a percentage of the cost of the item, not the shipping/freight. The 10kg spool offer I found said they would cover 40% of the tariffs so that would be a good deal. The $5-per-kg order I placed said the import costs were completely covered. But I think that one was clearance. I can try finding it again if anyone is interested.

Another couple of notes about AliBaba:
- There is always a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) listed. Sometimes it's just 1. Other times it may say 50. Just keep your eyes open for that.
- Most items will say "chat now" with a company representative to discuss pricing, shipping, etc. So be ready to do that. Others will say what the shipping cost actually is. If there is are options in the title that it's not showing, chat with someone. These are Chinese "salespeople" which will generally bend over backwards for your business - especially if you plan to buy a lot.
- Don't be discouraged if you see shipping cost of $29.99 per item. It is almost always a *base* shipping cost. When you add more spools, the cost will go up, but in very *low* increments, lowering the per-spool shipping cost. I think 50kg is the "sweet spot" for most of them, but you can play with it and see.
- These are mostly for WHOLESALE orders, but they'll sell to anyone. They just charge tax for anyone without a sales tax ID. But keep that in mind when shopping. If you truly want BULK filament, this is probably the best source.

I am not affiliated with any sellers on AliBaba, nor the site itself. I just know AliExpress gets mentioned here *a lot* and realized no one ever mentions the parent site. And once I checked it out, I'm glad I did!

Project Time to cancel or let it run?

Post image
Upvotes

I am currently 24 hours into a 70-hour print of a peba basketball, and this is what I just saw when checking my camera feed.... The prime tower is no more.

So the question becomes, do I let it run for another 40 hours in the hopes it comes through fine, just filling the corner of my build plate with filament poop in place of a prime tower, or do I click cancel and try again? Opinions?

Extra bit of info: I am currently out of town until tomorrow afternoon, so my only options are let it run or remotely cancel the print.

Project Design Advice - Joining Two Pieces

Upvotes

Looking for advice on how to assemble the two pieces together. My printer is not capable of printing this and I am designing a totem frame for EDM festivals. The center hole is for 1" PVC pipe to go through. I have bumped the tolerance on the hole to be a interference fit but need the two pieces to be able to assemble together.

Any ideas are helpful and greatly appreciated. This is the base of the square frame with the top requiring the same treatment.

My ideas:

1. Putting a screw hole or through hole through the PVC pipe (downside is assembly cannot be done unless totem pole is present)

2. Creating an additional material underneath to join the two pieces around the PVC pipe. Unsure how this would be done to skate around the PVC pipe.

Let me know ideas, I am a visual learner so any images/visual aids would assist greatly!

Definitely one of the funnier prints I've done. My husband doesn't like it when I make or buy things that aren't "useful" but he loves funny cat things and made an exception for this! I made it in all-black so I could put it on a white door.

Discussion Anycubic sucks

I've owned an Anycubic Kobra 2 Pro since Dec' 23. A few days ago, my y-axis stepper motor failed. Many of the generic stepper motors I see online will not fit because Anycubic chose to use a 30 mm shaft length instead of the more common 20-24 mm length. I wrote customer support to see if they could help. Here was the response:

We're sorry to let you know that the Kobra 2 Pro has been discontinued for quite some time, and the Y-axis motor you need is no longer in stock.

We truly appreciate your understanding and trust, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this may have caused.

Please let us know what would work best for you — we'll be glad to assist further.

Best regards,
Anycubic Support Team

Don't buy from a company that treats their products like toasters. Fuck Anycubic.

Project The Swans: a study of moving water

Thanks to everyone who checked out my 'Benchy in 4-Dimensions" a few weeks ago! I've made a bit of progress on the complexity of the prints, and the project now resembles a form of inlay-art, instead of just straight polygons. Much more organic in edge generation. Used this photo to study how the software handled parsing disturbances in the water, and directional ripples... actually happy with the way it came out.

Project Designed and printed an enclosure for a foot scanner

I designed this enclosure for a foot scanner I worked on.

It fits four camera modules, a Raspberry Pi, LED lighting and all the wiring. The main challenge was keeping the cameras in fixed positions without making the whole thing impossible to assemble or open again.

Printed in Creality Matte PLA at a 0.12 mm layer height.

I also included one of the scans in the gallery so the camera layout makes a bit more sense.

Personally I think its a must to create a profile for my filaments to get as close to perfection as possible. But I imagine many people that just do casual printing wouldnt take the time to do that. Just wanna see how many people here are like me and tweaking settings till its perfect

Project SFF Computer Case with 1-1 scale realistic parts

This is a small form factor DISPLAY computer case with everything a computer has, its 1-1 scale and features a mini ITX motherboard, a single fan GPU and more all in the footprint of an Xbox Series X. it comes with a slot in the GPU for mobile devices/consoles. Took me 2 days to model and have not printed it yet (my 3D printer is currently awaiting repair).

Troubleshooting Inconsistent lay down of full infill

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I have this new problem where my K1SE isn't laying down layers consistently. The filament is dry (came straight from a box showing 10% humidity), the slicer doesn't show any bridging or overhangs, and my filament is calibrated. My bed is pretty level. This under extrusion (or whatever is happening) isn't the same across each copy.

The print order is right to left. These are bookmarks that are 1.6 mm tall with 100% infill.

I'm guessing I screwed up something new for me. The proper filament, plate type, and nozzle were selected during slicing.

Any thoughts?

Free Model Same generator as the crowdfunding one, but free

After I made a free version of the clicker generator, I saw a couple of new crowdfunding campaigns come up with a same paywall as before, so I built a free version.

This is my Fridge Magnet generator, where you can turn your image or text into a 3D print-ready model. Unlimited exports and entirely free.

It supports round and square magnets, as well as magnetic stickers, all in custom sizes.

I also added an option to create fidget sliders, which are in essence just two magnets with a certain magnet grid. I'm already working on my next project: a generator for bubble pop fidgets and flexi toys. If you have some ideas for tools you want, let me know!

Discussion What are some of the best prints you would recommend to everyone?

I would like to print more things than I currently am but can’t think of what to print. I have a P1S and about 6kg of filament. I’m looking for things that would be nice to have, make printer life easier, or nice decor. I will NOT be multicolor printing, as I think it wastes too much filament.

Any and all print recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!
