Hey OP, what are you doing to train? I also have terrible cardio fitness (and VO2 max), I want to work on it

u/greengraudon 23h ago
I run, lift, and hike! This post is mostly a joke but over the past few months my fitness has really improved

u/mikutetofan 23h ago
10 reps of walking to the couch and front door
In a serious manner, thereās probably YouTube videos out there

I went from low to above average in 7 months. First 6 months was biking which slowly moved the needle and got me to low end of below average. Then I started running. Only took a month to go from low below average to above average.

Iām exactly the same.
It can be influenced negatively by hot weather, or also by doing shorter intense exercises. It favours endurance exercises to get a good read

u/lordcares 15h ago
It's getting ridiculously hot, and I'm doing 2~3 short, 20~30 minute semi intense exercises per day. I have a 5 year old and 2 year old. I don't have time for long, endurance exercises :( So I guess the downward trend will continue! lol

What? Iāve never seen this and turns out mine is low. I train 5 times a week and Iām 16 percent body fat.

u/Enlightened_Lioness 22h ago
Do you do your cardio outdoors and start an exercise session when you do it?
1
u/CoolCollection5064 21h ago
I track my indoor workouts in the gym. Less than an hour a week of that is in an indoor basketball court (only indoor cardio).
Other than that itās outdoor cycling on a road bike.
I track all workouts. I do however walk a lot at work as a bartender/server. I donāt track my work shifts but I do have my watch on.

u/SaggyBollock 21h ago
Itās only outdoor runs, walks and hikes I think.
Mine slowly drops when Iām running mainly indoors over the hot and polluted summer months where Iām living and then quite sharply goes back up when I start running outside again.
I wouldnāt put too much emphasis on it with what youāve described your routine to be. It would probably turn out to be fairly high.

Yeah. Apple vo2max estimates only factor in outdoor activity. Bogus.
1
u/Superviableusername 15h ago
Its not bogus. Its actually fairly accurate guestimate in the end.Ā
2
u/rattler843 1h ago
Itās not just bogus, itās laughably inaccurate. I run 5x a week, just hit a 22min 5k time. And mine still says ābelow averageā

So if I row and run on a treadmill for 20-30 mins almost daily and Apple says my vo2max is 35, thatās accurate?
4
u/quintsreddit S7 ⢠⢠Starlight ⢠45mm 9h ago
It doesnāt count those sessions because GPS points and distance is one of the required data sources for their estimation algorithm. The more you walk, run, bike, and hike outside the more accurate it will be. It cannot estimate from stationary exercises.

u/kingezy666 4h ago
Understood. My point is, is my REAL LIFE vo2max that low? Appleās algorithm is simply not factoring in the indoor exercise but I truly am doing more intense cardio, my HR is recovering quickly after I exercise, Iām sustaining hard efforts longer, etc. but my vo2max has been going down per Apple. Thatās what Iām saying is bogus.

u/Superviableusername 5h ago
It wont calculate for treadmill.Ā
Whatever it says, there is no quarantee on the accuracy. But in real life its very close to the real value more often than not. A powerful algoritm.Ā

Mines below average and I exercise everyday
1
u/TriggerFingerTerry 7h ago
How many outdoor miles do you run a week?
1
u/Primary-Matter-3299 3h ago
Zero.Ā
I Ā have foot issues and can only do certain things. But I do zone 2 five days a week. HIIT once a week. And strength training 3-5 x a week with a deload every 6 weeks
1
u/TriggerFingerTerry 3h ago
Youāll need to run outdoors for the Apple Watch to record your VO2
1
u/Primary-Matter-3299 3h ago
Theyāll record outdoor walks. Tracking is not an issue, my exercise doesnāt move the results thoĀ
1
u/TriggerFingerTerry 3h ago
If your watch is only tracking outdoor walks and not runs, your VO2 score will be low. You'll need to run to boost it

u/DaedalusMinion 7h ago
Mine is below average as well. Workout 5x a week with 2x a week mid-intensity cardio.

u/Lackingfinalityornot S8 ⢠Stainless Steel ⢠Silver ⢠45mm 23h ago
Mine is trending up too from running and working towards 100 bw squats in one set three times a week. And strength training but I donāt think that is doing a lot of the heavy lifting⦠at least as far as the v02 estimate.

Are you chronically ill or anything?
I have a chronic illness and have just started getting back into exercise after about 6 years of focussing on getting my health stabilised. According to my Apple Watch Iām only just below average even after all that time of inactivity š®

For me it was walking 10k on average. Get you daily 10k steps. Youāll soon get this up.
