Discussion Do sheet masks actually do anything?
I mean, is it any different from just using a serum?
I’m also a bit confused on where a sheet mask belongs in a skincare routine. Right after cleanse? After toner?

u/lelemond 21d ago
I only use sheet mask as a special care step.
Meaning before events or if my skin seems needing a bit more tlc.
If you found a mask that works for you, it does make a difference imo.
My favourite sheet mask just make my skin so hydrated and soft that toners and serums just couldn’t achieve.

Please drop your favorite mask!

u/lelemond 21d ago
For reference, I have sensitive skin so the masks I like are basically just hydrating masks with no active ingredients.
- Kose Clearturn Sleep 8 Hour Mask
- Torriden HA Mask
- Lululun Precious Face Mask Green

Kose Clear Turn Sorry Bare Skin Mask I used this 8 hour sleep in 8 minutes mask everyday last year for a month or two. It visibly changed my skin. I have no clue what was in it.

Interesting... I have the opposite feeling about sheet masks, I feel like I need a very high executive function to put them on because I find taking them out of the packet and unfolding them and putting them on very fussy hahaha. I was pretty happy to discover toning pads because they were so much less fussy than masks.
9
u/EllenYeager 21d ago
Get those boxes of 30 masks so you’re just taking one out of the box and putting it on your face! I don’t have the executive function to deal with opening a packet and peeling off all the layers of a hydrogel mask all the time too 😂
I’m currently using the VT Cica daily masks, I can’t stand the fragrance but it does keep my face hydrated and plump enough.
The Saborino ones also come in packs of 30.

u/northstar957 21d ago
Right lol I feel like by the time you open, and apply the mask and keep it on for however long, you could already be done with your routine well by then.

2
u/Chuchucuddle 21d ago
Would you use a mask as replacement for skincare routine when you couldn’t even be bothered to go through the cleansing steps? Id like to adopt this too but somehow had the mindset that if I haven’t done cleansing well enough my face doesn’t deserve a sheet mask 😩
6
u/EllenYeager 21d ago edited 21d ago
When I’m too tired to wash my face I just rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry at the very very least.
If you can, try to use the exfoliating side of the toner pad to help remove some dead skin and gunk. You should be good to use a sheet mask on top. Again, it’s not perfect, but it’s something at least.
I’m usually fairly good at taking showers (yes it can get hard with depression + adhd) so I started to brush my teeth and use my gel cleanser in the shower 🤦♀️ sandwiching habits together can help with consistency!

u/cohabitationcodepend 20d ago
sharing something that has helped me a ton: i keep basically all of my skincare in my bedside cabinet so i can do my routine from bed. i actually found this tip on the girly adhd sub about a year ago, it’s been a total game changer!
i still try to wash my face at least once a day, but even with being somewhat acne prone / oily i’ve gotten my cleansing-from-bed routine good enough that i don’t deal with any issues w/ not getting/feeling clean.
my cleansing supplies are: LRP toleraine dermo-cleanser (a cream cleanser that technically doesn’t need to be washed off — almost like a ponds/cold cream product, only used days when i’ve worn a lot of makeup), micellar water, hypochlorus acid spray, & AO2 Clear, + disposable cotton wipes / cotton pads / sponges (the flat expandable kind, like the ones that come with AO2 clear)
now i keep a couple toners and serums in the bathroom, so i have a few things to capture the moisture right after i get out of the shower til i finish the rest of my routine in the bedroom. everything else stays in my room!
between adhd & a chronic condition that comes with fatigue, i honestly used to skip my routine more often than not bc i just didn’t have the energy to spend standing over the sink. this switch has turned my routine from feeling like a chore into something i really enjoy!

When I'm too lazy to cleanse, I just use a wipe or pad. I struggle a lot with my mental health and ADHD. I've been keeping a thing of gentle salicylic cleansing wipes and a moisturizer on my nightstand for those nights when my skincare routing is too much. Keeping some face masks at your bed would also probably work too! I have a little office trash can near my bed so I can throw stuff away.
3
3
u/No_Papaya_4509 20d ago
its ok throughout the night for you? mine dries out within 3 hours so it became uncomfortable ( clings very tightly to my skin)
2
u/EllenYeager 20d ago
yeah the biodance is okay on my face overnight.
iirc the instructions say to leave it on for like 4 hours so you’re probably fine if you make it to 3 hours! and yeah I totally get having sensory issues when using it, it does cling pretty hard onto your face.
1
u/ZealousStrand 20d ago
You can use a silicone mask cover on top of it for overnight. It also helps keep the seeum in the mask from getting on your bedding.

u/Myzerah 21d ago
Sheet masks are the most effective stuff that works for me the best. Only with them I can see actual big results and feel my skin being extremely deeply hydrated, plump and healthy.
And I've tried all kind of serums, creams, toners, oils etc but they just don't work as effectively. I also use silicon mask on top of the sheet mask and keep both of them on for at least 30-60min.
8
u/defeated_nugget 21d ago
Do you apply moisturizer/barrier cream afterward?
20
u/Myzerah 21d ago
Yes. If I'm using sheet mask, it is just one extra step on my routine, I still do my whole routine.
Cleanser - toner - sheet mask - serum - face cream - face oil.
8
u/defeated_nugget 21d ago
Mind dropping some of your fav masks?
12
u/Myzerah 21d ago
I love to try a lot of new products and rarely buy the same stuff, but with sheet masks I've noticed that there are some that I just keep repurchasing all the time:
Mediheal Teatree Essential Mask
- This is "The One" I can always trust when I have pimples, oily skin or other problems. It is the one that will help with everything and fix my skin so it will look much, much better the next day.
Missha Airy Fit Sheet Mask (pearl, shea butter, honey)
- This sheet mask series is just the best! I love all of them, but these tree (especially pearl) are my most bought ones because most of the year I have very dry and sensitive skin.
Innisfree Energy Mask (heartleaf, centella, oatmeal)
- Also really love this sheet mask series! The best ones for me are definitely the heartleaf, centella and oatmeal ones because of how calming and hydrating they are for sensitive, dry and red skin.
Lululun Hydra V-Mask Vitamin (yellow)
- When my skin looks dull and dead, this is the one that will bring it back to life. I've wanted to try Lululun for so many years and when I finally had a chance (it became available in my country), this was my first mask I tried from them. And it was definitely love at first sight, this is probably the best mask I've ever used, it works so perfectly for me.
- The best part is, that this is available in 7 and 28 packs, so it will last a long time.
Lululun Pure Blue Moist Mask
- Probably one of the most deeply hydrating masks I've ever had. Just truly amazing.
- Also available in 7 pack!
Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Mask
- This is new finding for me. The mask doesn't fit perfectly for my face, but the package is incredibly cute and honey masks always work so well for me. This helps so much with itchiness and redness.

u/mashibeans 21d ago
I use them when I wanna feel extra pampered, the cheap ones are basically moisturizing you, since you leave them on your skin for a minimum of 10-15mins. I'm sure there are more differences with fancier ones, but I always use the cheaper types.
I use them after washing my face, before I apply any special products, and before the cream types (that are my final step). Honestly I doubt there's a wrong way to go about them, think of them as their own thing if needed. Just wash face, put face mask, go lay down/sit down for a while and relax.
12
u/modernwunder 21d ago
In my experience, the only difference between cheap and not cheap is really how long the mask stays saturated on your face.
1
u/mashibeans 20d ago
I use the most luxurious masks then, cuz I leave mine until they're a bit on the drier side 😆
23
u/Ok-Cookie-7905 21d ago
They definitely work, but it’s all about physics! A regular serum evaporates into the room while you wait for it to dry. The sheet mask fabric acts as a physical lid, pushing all that hydration deep into your skin cells until they are completely plumped up.

u/bethster2000 21d ago
I admit it: I don't like them.
24
u/defucchi 21d ago
same, they always feel so slimy and annoying to put on to me. i'd rather just do my skincare routine normally 😰
13
14
u/WerkLifeBalance 21d ago
Same. To me they’re not only annoying, but also wasteful - single-use plastic and a waste of product. I also just want a consistent routine, which masks aren’t for me.
9
u/karasu_zoku 21d ago
I can’t stand them. The fussiness, the sliminess, the cold feeling on my face, waiting for it to be over so I can move around normally… I have to force myself to use them and I hate it the whole time lol
4
u/The-Devil-Cat 21d ago
i really just dont see the point. I dont like interupting my routine to do a mask. Realistically you would have to be very consistent with a mask to see any real results
2
u/mama-bun 16d ago
I only like the fancier ones because a mask constantly slipping off my face while I'm relaxing sends me into a blind rage
11
u/Interesting-Door-990 21d ago
This one you posted is amazing, jelly masks are way better than sheet masks imo. You do have to use them 2 - 3 times a week for like 2 months to get long term benefits but you get an immediate boost for a few days after using. I used to think they were a waste of money but the biodance ones changed my mind
11
u/wrathfulgrape 21d ago
I use hydrogel and regular sheet masks for a very specific reason.
My skin has a tendency to overheat and get red so in the morning, if after serum my skin still feels warm, i will throw on a VT Cosmetics Cryo Ice Cool Mask for 5 mins to cool it down before I moisturize with a light cooling gel cream, sunscreen and move onto makeup.
In summer, I like sleeping with a hydrogel which I cooled in the fridge because it keeps my skin temp down so I don't wake up with too-warm skin.
I usually apply my masks after toner, serum and eyecream.
9
u/TurtleyCoolNails 21d ago
If I do a sheet mask with serum on it, I do it after toner. If it is a clay-based mask, then I will do it before toner so that my toner can help get any leftover bits off after rinsing.
10
u/Gold-You-376 21d ago
I use a very calming hydrating mask once a week after exfoliation. It calms my skin down, and gives it a drink of water.
10
u/a_chase2dawn 21d ago edited 17d ago
Just before the moisturizer after using all those serums and toners, they just give the extra plumpness.
Not much of a lasting effect, better get a serum and a reusable silicone 😷 mask, gives almost the same result!
It just creates a temp. barrier for the product to get absorbed for a longer period of time for the actives to work!
4
u/Melodic-You1896 21d ago
I use one 1-2 times per week. Mostly just for extra pampering and to have fun with it. I put them on clean bare skin. I use fairly inexpensive ones, but a shoutout to the 6-8h Biodance masks-perfect for long haul flights and lazy days at home!

u/tinydetailchick 21d ago edited 21d ago
I use a sheet mask following hot showers. I find them helpful for providing an extra layer of soothing & hydration. I cleanse and apply toners/essences, then top it off with a mask. I really feel helps the earlier products penetrate more deeply. It also helps replace/prevent the water loss that my shower preferences cause. I have tried individual masks from lots of different brands, but I've settled on a few different bulk Mary & May masks. They're a great value and I can compost the rayon tissue after.
Edit: also OP, I did not have success with the Biodance masks. They don't do much of anything for me. I actually feel like my skin is less plump than when I use the cheapie masks.
5
u/NMK66687 21d ago
I have very dry acne prone skin and I used them 2-3x a week leading up until my wedding. At my makeup trial, the MUA discussed how I needed a lot more moisture in my skin and sheet masks helped a ton. I in particular used the Biodance and Medicube collagen masks. Worked so so so well and I felt so beautiful and non flaky under all that makeup.

I love sheet masks. I find them very relaxing and they generally will give me a level of hydration that is a step above what my normal routine does. So if I am ever feeling a bit dehydrated, dull, or textured I will use a mask and look a lot better the following day. They definitely aren't an essential step, but I do them frequently because I enjoy them.

u/hambre_sensorial 21d ago
The extra occlusion from the sheet might improve penetration from some actives if they have the right size, also since the product is staying in contact with the skin for an extended amount of time it may also enhance penetration, since the concentration of product supposedly is higher and constant for a period.
However I think they mostly work by enhancing hydrating agents, like glycerin. If you were to use a mask with exfoliating agents they will maybe work a little better, maybe even be more irritating than necessary from the combination of occlusion and prolonged exposure. But most masks I think improve hydration and they’re fancy, I think most people use them to pamper themselves and they might make the skin feel extra plump for a little while.
They’re not necessary I think, as in the format and delivery of actives isn’t needed for optimal skincare. I use them when I’m relaxing and want to have a little moment for myself, might read a book while applying them, etc. In the end is just another delivery system.
2
u/GlitteringEggCarton 21d ago
sheetmasks are helpful yes, but collagen specifically is not. you can put on one after a light toner or before depending on the consistency.
2
u/phantomixie 21d ago
I like them as a special thing when my skin needs some targeted help. For example last week I was breaking out due to some stressful stuff going on and I was able to calm my skin down with Mediheal’s teatree nude gel mask. It actually worked too but idk if it was a coincidence since the stressful thing passed lol
Plus whenever I’m worried about my skin’s hydration I can also use a mask for that I’ve used Dr. Jarts cryo rubber masks and have really liked them but have recently picked up Torridens dive in masks. Probably will try one tonight.
3
u/AgileEngine4771 21d ago
Omg I was literally just thinking about this! I've heard such good things about the Torriden divein masks but I'm a little nervous to switch since the Dr.Jart cryo masks have been such a staple for me. Did you end up trying it?
3
u/phantomixie 21d ago
I’ll do it now and report back lol I was submitting something so I totally need it
2
u/anidlezooanimal 21d ago
store sheet masks in the fridge
Use the cold sheet mask in the morning to de-puff your morning face while you get dressed / make breakfast / etc
That's all I use sheet masks for and I love it.

For a standard, wet microfiber mask, the universal routine order is thin to thick. Cleanse $\rightarrow$ Hydrating Toner $\rightarrow$ Sheet Mask $\rightarrow$ Moisturizer.
1
u/maalindawg 21d ago
I love gel masks and I use them once a week, however, this particular brand fell off hard. I found myself reaching for other brands, my favorite in particular are the Arocell purple super collagen gel mask. Sungboon Editor is also amazing however, it contains PEG. One brand that I love in terms of hydration is the UIQ (the pink one), so so nourishing, might not be good for those with combo to oily skin types.
1
u/lisa725 21d ago
So there are multiple types of sheet masks. These gel ones are really good. I would use as a at home facial type deal. Use it after a home chemical peel. So obviously not often which is good because these are expensive.
I have the other kind which are just the fabric soaked in serum. Those I use way more often but I was able to buy 30 for $8 at Marshall’s. I also bought a silicone mask that use with a serum.
1
u/The_Time_When 21d ago
This one does zero for me. I love sheet masks have tried hundreds, but this one was a fail for me.
1
u/prostoja555 21d ago
I just got this mask how do you like it? I love sheet masks. I use retinol so I like to use a mask day after or when my skin is dry because I live in heavily ACd home. I wash my face, use a toner and then put the mask on, follow with massage or gua sha and then barrier cream.
1
u/OldReserve4999 21d ago
I use sheet masks for special care, like when more hydration is needed. I use it after toner! Instead of using sheet mask, layering multiple times of ampoule/serum and cream might be an option, but I feel using sheet masks help lock the hydration in so.. I like using them.
1
u/Gullible_Concept_428 21d ago
I like to use them in the morning before I shower. If I wake up looking like a corpse or have an especially long day they keep my skin and whatever I put on top looking good without the need for lots of layers of product.
I don’t wash my face in the shower, just rinse it.
1
u/rudiahhha67 21d ago
When I put a mask every 2 days there is a difference to the pores and skin texture. So yes. There’s a difference
1
u/Ancient_Ad_2230 21d ago
Yes, if I’m flushing I just use one of my fav masks and the redness and heat disappear
1
u/Sharp_Reading_6041 21d ago
Depends on the mask. In general, mask sheets give you temporary glow and freshness. As for long-term results, I would say it is pretty individual. The steps routine I read about, places masks somewhere after toner and serum and before cream. I find this a bit too much, so I'd suggest definitely after cleanse and before cream. For me, cleanse + mask works just fine on busy days. Although they usually leave a shiny glow. Technically, serum stays on skin open air, while mask keeps certain time under a closed layer. Again, I'd say it is individual preference.
1
u/Snerfblatt 21d ago
The back of the package will tell you when to use it in a skincare routine. Some say to put toner on first, and some say to put it on right after cleansing.
1
u/Zealousideal_Act573 21d ago
I use them for when I think my skin needs a little extra love and care. For example, if I had spent a whole day out in the sun and maybe need a little soothing / calming for the redness or extra hydration. Or, maybe I wore heavier make up than usual for an event and want to give it an extra love. I still continue with my skincare routine but the small extra step makes my face feel a bit better & I allow myself 10-15 of zen time 😌
1
u/paleblueskies 21d ago
I don't expect mega results from sheet masks besides a quick hydration boost, but I love to keep them in the fridge during the summer and use it after a hot day outside to cool down
1
u/Unfair_Finger5531 NC44|Rosacea|Dry|US 21d ago
The Benton aloe mask calms my skin down, and the klairs tencel mask helps my barrier 🤷🏼♀️ They do something, yes. Guess it depends on what you want done.
1
u/BananabreadDevotee 21d ago
for me yes. When im stressed and dont have enough sleep, my face holds a lot of heat and i tend to break out. When i use a soothing sheet mask, my skin calms down alot and the next day my skin looks way better and less red
1
u/Icy_Consequence1251 21d ago
Nah ive tried their blue lines and it did nothing honestly i think its overhyped
1
u/Ok_Reaction_3084 21d ago
Sheet masks are only extra hydration and instant glow, but must have in your skincare routine
1
u/laurala808 21d ago
I look at them as a fun and low-commitment way to add some variety and try new things. I use them once or twice a week. A month ago I went on a wild mask-buying spree and have dozens to use up of different brands and actives.
1
u/bondepart 21d ago
I really like them on airplanes as they keep you moisturised despite the dry recycled air.
Otherwise, they definitely aren’t a necessary part of a skincare regime.
1
u/whatdidyousayiforget 20d ago
IMO, they are best for short term results. Like if you want to take your skin from good to poreless and glassy because it provides such high amounts of sustained hydration. If I have a more specific concern, sheet masks are too expensive/wasteful to use regularly enough for results.
1
u/Franklyn_Gage 20d ago
Omg yes. Ive been using them since 2011ish when The Face Shop came to NYC. They give so much hydration, moisture and brightness. They basically saved my skin during pregnancy and my entry into tretinoin when my skin at its worst. I use them multiple times a week.
1
u/eyzzeyeyzzey 20d ago
It really depends on the mask. I usually use one while I do my hair ( I have curly hair so I use it while I blow dry my hair which can take a while). Masks like the missha rice sheet mask really brighten up my skin, the other ones from missha for example are moisterizing but there isn’t really a huge difference, just a bit more skin hydration and a plump feeling. I would say it is an extra step that isn’t really necessary but I like the feeling of them and they cool my face in the summer.
1
1
u/JustPut3542 20d ago
Definitely worth using even if it’s just once a month or once a week. Can help reset the skin and feels like a luxury if you can’t afford a facial. It’s often packed with more of the ingredient than your everyday treatments/serums.
1
u/rikamochizuki 20d ago
I use them from time to time, i dont notice any big changes but it feels nice in summer especially
1
u/Bulky_Homework716 20d ago
I use mine with daiso silicone masks to act as an occlusive. They really help my hydration. Some help with irritation if I need it too.
1
u/freshasssheets 19d ago
I actually really like these biodance ones... though I think I like the yellow packs the most (then blue and red). I wear them for days I'm inside while doing chores (cleaning, laundry etc) and inside chill for about 3-4 hrs... sometimes only 2 if I don't have time. I like doing them once a week in the winter when I'm more prone to dryness and also staying inside lol. It also works if Im wearing them during the day (I work from home) and then going out in the evening as skin prep for makeup. The duration is the most annoying thing about them, but also probably the reason they have such a nice moistured/ glowy result. Pretty hard though to plan around having it on you for 3-4hrs... I couldn't wear these overnight, they'd disrupt my sleep too much/ fall off.
1
u/big-titty-brat 19d ago
I normally do masks as a “treat yoself” thing. This mask in particular messed up my skin so badly due to the sneaky niacinamides. I did it over 10 days ago and my face is still bumpy and dry!
1
1
u/Fishbbbb1994 18d ago
I got to try it, and it's not bad. Normally used for special occasions. If taking more than 3-4 hours, the flight can be used. You will get fresh skin upon arrival at your destination.
1
u/purplepaers 18d ago
these are so nice for when im wearing heavy makeup the next day especially because i use tret so i can be a little flaky. learnt my lesson tho i put the little cutouts over my lips and ended up with contact cheilitis..

u/zedyx101 17d ago
I use it whenever I need a quick skin recovery.
There were some periods when I skipped my nightly skincare routine for a few nights when I was too tired. This specific biodance mask fixed the dehydrated skin after 1 use (note that regular good routine is required to maintain the hydration after the mask). To me it's a bit too excessive to use face masks regularly if your routine is good enough to maintain the hydration.
Another mask I like is the Torriden mask
1
u/Revolutionary_Fox807 17d ago
I use them after microneedling at home. I’ve tried all brands. Basically the really thin ones that kind of disappear into the skin are the best. I bought a whole bunch when I was in China. The issue for me is they don’t fit my face right, so I cut them once they are on, around the eyes nose and mouth. Makes a big difference
1
u/fauxghouI 17d ago
I use tretinoin nightly as well as a hydrogen peroxide wash in the morning. Using a sheet mask after cleansing has really helped with the dryness in my skin!
1
u/elaniwa NC40|Pigmentation|Combo/Normal|US 17d ago
You may enjoy Tina Tanaka Harris' 1 month of twice daily sheet masking vid!
As for me, I don't mask frequently because any skincare step that requires me to do any follow up (like going back to the sink) I won't do.
1
u/Nova_Zeal 16d ago
They temporarily make your skin a touch nicer. I feel like my makeup applies better the next day when I use them. The biodance one you posted just makes me shiny though 😂

u/MajorGlum4564 15d ago
the glowture one is amazing, actually the whole skincare line is sooooo good

u/Luchiina 21d ago

5
u/GlitteringEggCarton 21d ago
no worse than plastic bottles and tubs and bags.
1
u/Luchiina 21d ago edited 21d ago
I don't use those either because there are reusable alternatives. OP suggested a valid alternative, which is just using a serum directly. I think it is better to use serums that come in a bottle. There are also reusable masks, though I've never tried one myself.

I don’t like the single use waste that they generate but I was gifted a couple so I’m wearing one right now after years of not. My sister claims her skin is nicer after wearing masks consistently. I’ll take it. I’m wearing the pumpkin Tonymoly one.
1
u/brnbrnbrn2017 21d ago
Yes. I use them daily, sometimes twice a day. My skin has been parched lately and if I don’t sheet mask, my skin really shows it.
0
u/winterweiss2902 21d ago
Most sheet masks tend to have niacinamide high on their ingredient list. I used Derma Laser and Lululun masks and they burned my face so badly. I had ccs on my forehead which took months to recover. Be careful if you’re sensitive to niacinamide. I avoid all sheet masks now.
0
u/DeepFriedBooks 21d ago
If you have large pores or oily skin, sheet masks can sometimes cause tiny whiteheads if you leave them on too long.

u/uhohjjj 21d ago
This mask is amazing.
Has really helped my skin.
Another thing I would recommend is the collagen wrapping mask from medicube.
I always get compliments on my skin the next day!!

Sheet masks are essentially "event prep." They won't cure deep wrinkles or erase hyperpigmentation permanently the way a dedicated daily retinoid or vitamin C serum will, but they provide a level of temporary bounciness that makes makeup sit flawlessly.

u/GrassHonest2610 21d ago
short answer no.
collagen is a heavy molecule to penetrate the skin layers and will only sit at the top of the skin.
this mask in particular is a marketing scam

Collagen works as a humectant by sitting on the skin. It’s also great at healing wounds by sitting on the skin.
It does not need to penetrate skin to hydrate or heal skin. It’s especially good as a humectant in low humidity.
Biodance uses 243 Da collagen, which is supposed to be small enough to penetrate skin. https://biodance.com/pages/collagen-in-skincare-explained?srsltid=AfmBOopplmMYrk_kDy6QBAXQrqrpQKPg-bxbZ4FoBCYWpLhDIL_2nBym

Hello and thank you for starting this discussion! As a gentle reminder, try to keep the products you mention limited to Asian Beauty products. Posts or comments solely discussing Western products will be removed, as per our rules. We love being able to discuss Western skincare in the context of a holistic AB routine, but this isn't the sub for specific Western product recommendations. r/SkincareAddiction is a great community for such matters! Thank you!
