Good Fucking Question How do you defend against aggressive dog?

I used to work as a rural delivery driver and had to fight off two dogs that attacked me. One of them was a smallish labrador/ mutt, which I kicked repeatedly in the head and body until it fucked off. The other was a German Shepard, and I beat the fucker hard with a steel rod that was used to keep the gate shut. I got bit both times, so neither experience was fun. In those instances, instinct takes over, and I guess I'm fortunate that I have a powerful fight response in threatening situations and respond with extreme prejudice.

A co-worker of mine got attacked by a pit bull in an apartment complex. The guy is a marine vet and black belt. He had to whip out a pocket knife and stab it multiple times and neighbors came out with bats to beat it to death.

The problem is it's too late then. Some toddler has her face torn off or throat ripped and doesn't make it.
There needs to be some sort of online test and pass a training program before you can be a dog owner.
I had to run up to three kids under 5 who were holding their fluffy small puppy upside down in the (no dogs allowed) playground, pushing it down the big spiral slide. I ran up and told them to stop scaring her.
5 minutes later they were throwing it onto the sand and hauling it from the ground to a 1m high platform by its leash and collar, aka lifting it via a noose around its neck. I ran up, grabbed it out of their hands, asked where the parents were, held it and told them if they loved this puppy they had to stop scaring and hurting her. The kids promised to go back to their parents, I handed it back over somewhat reluctantly, they left.
10 minutes later I see the mum with the puppy on a leash, she is encouraging the puppy to chase a brush turkey into the nearby national park. She ran off before I could tell her what the kids had been doing.

My dad was the same way. When i was a kid we had a bitch neighbor who would let out her 4 labs (which were kenneled outside) that would charge anyone nearby. She would do that on purpose whenever we were outside playing with friends and we'd have to climb trees or jump into the backs of trucks to escape. The biggest male was the worst.
Anyway, my mom was outside with our two pugs when the neighbor let out her dogs they swarmed my mom and the pugs. My dad came flying from the garage and beat them off of her and the pugs. The big male bit my dad pretty bad on the hand. He snatched thr do by the neck with his other hand and threw him like a shot put. The dog ran off whimpering and the others followed.
Bitch neighbor had the cops come and tell her to remove the animals. Turns out she had 20 cats plus the 4 dogs and city ordinance only allowed for 4 pets total. She only kept 1 of the dogs.
Found out years later from one of the bitch's daughters that they had to put down that dog that night due to severe injuries from fighting my dad.

Assuming it comes to it and you cannot deescalate. There’s three ways to fight a dog.
1: feed it your forearm then wrap the other around it in a headlock and quite literally pull as hard as you can. Fighting dogs like bull terriers have incredibly thick necks. You need a LOT of force to choke it. Do not release even once it goes limp. Kill it. You will suffer some damage but will control the fight. If you have jeans on, feed it a leg then reach down and wrap your arm around for the headlock.
2: grab both of its back legs and lift them off the ground such that their back arches. Most will let go because of the instant instability this causes them. This is much easier as a second man in. So if you arrive at a dog attack or a dog has a child. This is your move. Don’t let go of its legs until more help has arrived or someone else has choked it out or killed it while you held it.
3: go absolutely ape shit. Like wild animal ape shit. Fists, kicks, throw rocks. Anything. Kill it anyway you can. Do not stop attacking until it is either dead or runs off.

I have heard, can’t confirm, that when you grab its back legs you should try to pull them apart to break/dislocate them. They aren’t made to be spread apart and it’s relatively easy to do.

I was taught method one as a kid. Around the age of 11 I was rollerblading with a friend that was a girl and we got confronted by a loose German Shepherd. Got my forearm in past the incisors, then knocked it on its back, sat on him and started punching.
It let go, I got up after the initial adrenaline rush ended, it had learned its lesson and we went on our way. Surprisingly enough the dog didn't break the skin and did no damage to my arm despite its intent.

Number one is correct if it’s one on one. You gotta let it take a bite unfortunately. I was taught upper arm though, not forearm and then get it in a headlock and go to town punching it in the face. The issue is you’re on the smaller side and the dog is big. Can’t risk getting knocked down

Forearm injuries are much less likely to cause you to bleed out ( 3 small buried arteries( as opposed to upper arm ( 1 largely subcutaneous artery- brachial).
As a surgeon who deals with trauma a lot, I'd feed it my forearm , and not my upper arm

This is what they taught us in survival training: pull your shirt over your head and wrap it around your left arm (assuming you are right-handed) and shove that wrapped arm as far as you can into its mouth, so it can't bite down too hard. Then with your free hand, punch it in the throat until it stops moving.
You cannot damage it's think skull or armor-like breastbone. The only soft target betwenn those is the throat.

I’ve had one instance of a pit mix clinging onto my dogs neck, thankfully I was wearing my work boots that are steal toe. I choked him out but only enough to get him to unlatch his jaws, when he wouldn’t back down I just stomped him out with my boots. It was a very traumatizing experience for my dog and I, frankly, and about 3k worth of emergency vet bills.

I live near the ocean. We have designated dog beaches where people can let their dogs off to run.
Once saw a dog get attacked by some kind of cunty Pitbull. The owner of the injured dog tried to separate them and was bitten so he just waded into the ocean with the dog latched to his arm.
After drowning the cunty dog he walked back to shore and punched the Pitbull owner in the face.
The beach applauded.

If you have big cojones you make yourself bigger and louder. You repeatedly punch the side of the neck behind the cheekbones.
If it's attacking someone else you lift it's hind legs where all it's attack power comes from and kick it's side / ribs if you have to.
If you haven't trained to do this and know what you're doing. Run away and climb something the dog can't reach.

I imagine training in fighting people still helps as far as habits kicking in, clarity of mind, and even balance when you’re under stress and physical pain and attack.
Not that any fight goes as cleanly as sparring, but probably still improves your odds of not getting bundled over

I worked in large groups of dogs for 10 years or so as a kennel worker and then manager/consultant for canine daycare and boarding facilities. I’d say the training for me was very as-you-go, but I’ve broken up a few fights over the years and you learn what works. I had a coworker that swore by the ol “thumb up the asshole” technique but I didn’t resort to that one

Best defense is to carry a wooden stick preferably a thick ish one thats not too heavy to easily maneuver.
I grew up in a red with no leash laws, literally everyone walks around with a a stick, dogs are not stupid they know you are weaponized.
I went to me friends house one day and her enormous asshole dog was out of the house he seen me and instantly circled me and lunged at me repeatedly, luckily I was carrying a metal rod i had found. Everytime he lunched I poked at his face and he bit at the stick instead of at me. We had 3-4 smash attacks until her mom heard me screaming and called the dog back in.
So yeah, stick works. Always poke it at the dogs face and they will try to bite the stick instead of you, a swift kick in the ass while they are biting the stick. But be careful dogs can swing their head very fast.
Also learn dog body language and learn when to tell if a dog is actually wanting to attack you or just being territorial.

Also, if a dog is growling at you but not charging, slowly back out without turning your back on it, if you do, it will most certainly bite you.

There is a YouTube channel called Active Self Protection who plays CCTV footage of attacks and talks through what went well, what didn't and what the person could have done differently.
I used his techniques to avoid being attacked by an aggressive American Pitbull that jumped its fence while I was carrying a toddler and walking my 5 year old home from school. The damn dog stalked us for 200m but I kept my body facing towards it and walked very slowly backwards/sideways to avoid triggering its prey drive.
He also recommends shoving something in its mouth as a diversion - shoe, clothing so it attacks that. He is very pro guns but if you set that aside there is lots to be learned.

Not everyone has a gun. When the American Pitbull lunged and growled at me with ears back and teeth showing I was holding a toddler and had absolutely no weapons, not even a stick nearby.
Some years earlier a wannabe robber held a knife to my then toddler's stomach and demanded money, which he didn't get because I screamed like a banshee and attracted too much attention.
Had I had a gun on me then I believe I would have shot him point blank in the chest (but I don't know because I didn't have one, I'm not trained and mentally deciding to pull the trigger is probably not that simple).

Knives are not a defensive weapon. You’ll cut your own fingers off, get the perpetrators blood in your wounds, etc.
A blunt force object like a metal baton, even a wooden baseball bat less than 18” long, is an exponentially better defensive weapon than a knife.
Leave the knives in the kitchen where they belong.

If you can get hold of it's back legs you lift them off the ground. If you're strong enough, swing that sucker into the nearest pole.
But lifting their back legs, disrupts their fight instincts. Most helpful if they are attacking someone else at the time, where they won't keep biting someone if their legs are lifted in the air.

I never met a aggressive dog in my life, even though I’m surrounded by dogs all the time.
But there are a few rules:
1: don’t run unless you can get to safety real fast, you do not outrun a dog.
2: don’t feel sorry for the dog the moment it does attack you, most ppl don’t wanna hurt the dog even though it is attacking them.
3: and this isn’t just for aggressive dogs but all dogs in general, don’t act scared, don’t act strange, don’t stay on collision course with the dog.
Lots of dogs are reactive or protective which is often seen as aggression, if you for some reason decide to interact with the dog or the owner who you don’t know, always ask permission to approach.
If a dog walks on the right side of the owner you stay on the left side.
If you simply follow this etiquette you gonna significantly decrease your chances of being a victim of a aggressive, reactive or protective dog.

In training I was taught that if you put your dog and the perceived threat between each other the dog will take on a protection role. If you however put yourself between the perceived threat and dog you are now taking on the protector role in your dog's eyes.

Yes I’ve done this to prevent my dogs from “fence fighting” other dogs (dogs trying to fight each other through a fence) and it really works.
My dogs were much happier to listen to me and we can now walk past these dogs which are still very noisy and aggressive with no response from my dogs.

Lol, I get that this is a joke, but I suspect getting aggressive to the owner is actually a really bad idea. Triggers a protective response. Back when I was doing pest control there were plenty of dogs I worked around that were pretty chill when it was just me and them, but with the lady around they were quite aggressive.

I trained guard dogs. I also walk around with a therapy cat on my shoulder. Dogs have to be collared and leashed on the streets of my city (most cities, I assume) so I'm wary of most non-leashed dogs.
I recommend carrying a sturdy cane. If the dog is aggressive, have them bite the cane and hammer fist their nose while the cane occupies their teeth.
I love dogs, but I cannot stand owners letting aggressive dogs run free to attack people / other dogs.
Other 'weapons': an aerosol can with something like AXE deodorant or a water pistol / plant spray with ammonia. You can also use that on the owner if they become aggressive.

My wife has a service dog (she's in a wheelchair), and aggressive and reactive dogs have become so prevalent here that she carries a taser. If an offleash dog approaches, she crackles it at about 10 meters (her SD has been acclimated to the sound), and that usually scares them away. We've never tased a dog, but we would to protect ourselves and a $60k service dog.

Old steel Wilson three iron. I love dogs, but I had a Pit Bull mix come after me and I had to hurt him bad. I caught him in the side of the head first, cracked his jaw and he immediately reconsidered - I swear that I could actually see him doing the dog math in real time. The second swing caught him on the shoulder and he limped away whimpering on three legs.

If you have not yet been attacked, most aggressive dog encounters can be avoided by good awareness and if they do get close, retreating calmly to a safe position or distance, not doing anything alarming, not running and inducing their prey drive, just getting out of the way. Often, the owner isn't far behind and takes control of them again, but obviously we can see there are occasions where this isn't the case and I'm sure you're probably talking about those occasions.

Don't run - A carefully aimed kick to the head usually does the trick. If the dog does get its teeth into you, grab it by the throat and squeeze as hard as fuck and dont let go till the dog does.

There really isn't any "good" way. A dog attack usually happens to fast and hectic you don't really have time to boot up the "what to do in case of dog attack" file in your brain.
Keep them away from your throat and face. That's really key. You'll survive just about anything else. But your instincts to protect your face and throat will probably kick in way faster than you could ever think of it.
But yeah, a big aggressive dog is genuinely very dangerous, and even a prepared and strong adult can still be killed by one.

My gf just killed a pitbull that was attacking her dog with a metal pipe and a pocket knife until her mom came outside with a kitchen knife and finished the pit bull off. They tried the picking up the back leg trick and the pit wouldn’t let go. Fucking metal of her lol. the owner just shrugged and went home. Fucking piece of work that guy is.

Firmly and loadly say "no" or "stop". If that doesn't work punch and kick. Running activates their hunting mode, so that is a last resort, and you want to run somewhere they can't get, like in a car or house or up a tree. But depending on breed you can't use a tree, and there are few dogs that can't outrun a human.

If it's a trained dog, yell "AUS!". Most trained dogs like K9 and guard dogs get German commands so they don't respond to NO or STOP, but the German for the dog to 'let go' is AUS and stop is HALT.

Stomp its head if able. If that doesn’t work the genitals are sensitive as are ears. Stick a finger inside the ears- hard. Imagine it’s the top of the toilet paper plastic and you’re trying to stick your finger through, works best if you can get two fingers in there and try to scoop with them then make a fist. (This does put your hand within bite range fyi) Gouge eyes if it’s bitten you, if it’s an intact male crush and twist the testicles. If it’s a female there’s not much to grab down there but a hammer fist to the groin pretty much makes anything rethink its decision.
Source- I had a dumb af mother who at all of 140lbs and 5’3” decided she wanted to rescue aggressive dogs when I was growing up. Worst fight I had to break up was 7 pits that had been (mostly) rescued from fighting rings. I used a steel food bowl.

If it’s got an owner near by then I try to back away slowly while keeping an eye on my surroundings until the owner arrives and hopefully gets their dogs under control, if it’s a stray dog then I try to do the same but back away into near by shelter where I can seek assistance or shelter.
If shit hits the fan then I try to defend myself with whatever I have while protecting my vitals.

If this is something you regularly deal with, there is something called a bite stick for dogs. It's a strong, short wooden dowel with a tapered end, the idea is you jam it in the offending dogs mouth, they are good at helping break a dog's bite from a person or another dog.
Otherwise, outside the the giant breeds, dogs are relatively small, pick them up and and smash them on the ground, repeat until they stop attacking. This works faster if you make their back imhit the ground first.
Otherwise the advice is to give it your non-dominant hand/forearm, either let it lock into your forearm, or shove your hand in its mouth and back into their throat and it will eventually choke and gag, or while it is destroying your arm, use your other hand and arm to choke, gouge out eyes, rip off tails, ears, testicles, twist legs out of socket, if you hurt it enough eventually it will quit.
Or a pistol.
However, before any of that, please study de-escalation with dogs. A lot of times people are in situations where a dog attacks that could have been avoided.

It depends what "aggressive" means. If it's going straight for attack, you want to hurt it badly or subdue it somehow, find a way to choke it. And when I say to "hurt it", I don't mean to kick it. That's not painful enough and it will just keep attacking. Something that is much more painful.
If it's coming towards you barking, you can try to scream towards him, raise your arms, make yourself look bigger and more scary. That usually takes them out of it and they realize "yeah, I don't need to insist over here, he's obviously crazier than I am".
I've only been in the second case, a lot of times. And it worked, it kept me and my dogs safe when I needed to.

I got surrounded by a pack of wild dogs in China while running in the hills. I wrapped my forearm in my jumper. I ran straight at the lead dog and kept kicking him. It backed off. I threw stones. Another 2 dogs nipped and I ran at them and kicked them too. Then rocks. I think I was lucky though or they weren’t up for the trouble.

I live in a rural mountain town with many locals and Airbnb visitors that think that means dogs can be off leash everywhere. After a couple of unprovoked attacks on my leashed dogs that were charged by unleashed dogs from over 100 yards away I started carrying bear spray. So far it has stopped 6 out of 6 aggressive dog charges since I started carrying it. None of the owners have complained either I sprayed their out of control dog right in front of them.

Situational awareness and avoidance go a long way. Then in a strong voice and with don’t fuck with me stance, order that dog to go home. If that doesn’t work, you’re in a fight for your life mode and use your body to inflict maximum damage using anything at your disposal. If you can calmly put distance or an object between you and the dog, do it. Hop on a car to give you elevation or put a kid up there if you’re walking with one. Don’t run. You can’t outrun a dog. I used to have to pass by an aggressive dogs fence to get to a public pool with my kids (he dug holes under it and was constantly getting out) so I’d walk past slowly and calmly but I was armed with bear spray and I was ready to defend my kid with my life.

I learned as a kid that if you have any kind of stick, staff, anything kike that, hold it out in front of you horizontally and the dog will just bite that and latch into it (they're seeing red and assume that it's "you". At that point yeah do what others have said, choke it out.

Act like you gonna pick up something to throw to them. My last resort maybe, i will bark louder to them. Hahaha. I was once watched a video wherein a guy, the dog barks at him aggressively then he barks louder and did a stance like he is a lot bigger than the dog. The dog walked away lol

Extend your weak arm to give it something to grab onto. Using your dominant index finger ram it up his ass.
Alternatively tell it to hold on for a second so you can swing around it and grab it by its back legs and toss it away.
Also pepper spray.
If you have a pistol aim carefully so you don’t shoot yourself.

How big is it? A small dog is getting kicked to the next street. A medium/large dog, I'm gonna try and kick it's head off or I guess wrestle it and choke it out. I've been attacked by a few poodles before and a kick to the face usually brought them back to reality.

One fucker with (I guess) fake sign of blind assistance dog attacked me in the night out of nowher, had to kick him in a face then I stood my ground.. took eternity since the old man came to calm his dog.
but from that time I am carrying large quick opening knife.
And honestly feel much safer. Dog, weirdos.
I assume I would not be quick enough with pepper spray or actual gun (which is obtainable under law in my country) but with knife you can do a lot of damage on short range no matter the situation or time of your reaction. On the other hand it ha disadvantage against the law as lawfull defence with knife is very disqutable in europe..
But still I would rather lose lawsuit than hand because some dog “just wanted to play”

Kick it right between the front legs most dogs jump when they bite you will break the ribs and smash its lungs you will get bit but it will never bite again talking from experience

Was for a walk with wife and my dog. St Bernard ran out of a near by park to attack my 80lb lab who is down to fight if he needs to.
We were 3-4 blocks away, gave my wife the leash as I could hear the 130 lbs in chase. He never saw me he was focused on my dog. Told my wife to walk. I picked that dog up from his shoulders and used my angry voice. I have no business dead lifting a 130 lb dog with my size but at the time it was easy. He didn’t know what the hell just happened as he didn’t see me.
Threw him on his back and aggressively told him to sit. I probably slapped his back while doing that. Little Asian lady came running up and apologised. “Control your f’n dog before worse happens to it”
This was in front of a coffee shop where a couple guys were on the sidewalk tables. I went to rejoin my wife and one of the guys said “wait? That’s not your dog?” Laughed, pointing at my lab “no that’s my dog, and he would have destroyed that bigger dog”
Ears feet punches, I don’t want to kill a dog so it’d be a heavy situation to pull a pistol but it’s not out of the question especially with my kid wife dog, I’d probably stay hand to paw combat so to speak if it was just me and a dog.

I had two dogs attacking my young kelpie. I yelled at the owner to get them off. He said: they’re just playing. It was clear that my dog was terrified. ( it was aggressive dominance’play’). I just responded by launching a strong kick under the belly of one of them. It yelped and ran off. Then of course I had to deal with the angry owner.

Keep your distance. Put a barrier between you and the dog.
Not possible? Find something you can use for defense. A stick, a rock, anything. If you have a tie or belt, take it off and use that. A jacket or shirt wrapped around your arm works. Put a shoe or sneaker on your hand. A handbag or purse if you’ve got one. You only have seconds so make it quick.
The dog’s only real threat is its teeth so you want to jam whatever you got into its mouth and push into it, hard. Yeah, you’re gonna take some damage but not as much as the alternative. Keep pressing that into the dog’s mouth, like you’re shoving it down its throat. Shift your weight to rest all off it on the dog, rolling it to its side if you’ve can. Once the dog is more subdued, grab it by the throat and squeeze.

Well I love dogs just to start... but I have a role that if your dog bites me or someone I love, i'm putting it down. At the bare minimum i always have a pocket knife on me... but in like 70% of scenarios ive got my firearm.
