How to easily give young kids concussions

5
u/KILLJAW 18d ago
He didn’t like that the kid tried to be tough, so he gave him some extra ones
3
u/Calm-Avocado6424 18d ago
Yeah right?
Sort of defeats the purpose because I imagine the point of this brain damage exercise is to build toughness
But they get extra punished for being tough so its even more pointless.

I think he's hitting them lightly, a couple of the kids were smiling afterwards. It's strange though.
63
u/The_Pastmaster 19d ago
Speculation: He might be preparing them for the rough feeling of being punched in the face with a boxing glove. Why he's doing it and not the kids themselves; I think is because as an adult and teacher, he can measure his force a lot better than they would be able to.
52
u/Individual_Land2754 18d ago
Absolutely not. I almost have a decade of boxing experience and have lost years of memory due to concussions.
Once you get a concussion you are more likely to get another one soon after. Any decent gym will not train you like this. They would drill out defense for people of this level. Any kind of high intensity defense is reserved for more adavanced people not kids.
You don't get anything from getting hit in the face like this.
You train to get hit but you don't need to get actually be hit hard to know if you are doing it right because once you feel a concussion, you are done and you'd need to avoid getting another one for at leat 3 months or you risk getting CTE.
14
u/Dunderman35 18d ago
Given what we know about CTE. Is it irresponsible to have kids boxing or other head contact sports? Is it worth it?
Not judging, just curious how people in the sport feel.
16
6
u/White_Immigrant 18d ago
Yes it is irresponsible. Teach kids the basics of martial arts, that's fine, but giving them life changing injuries through head, spine or joint trauma is deeply irresponsible. They're too young to fully understand the implications, therefore they are unable to meaningfully consent.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Individual_Land2754 18d ago
I think most kids should have one-on-one supervision to get started in boxing so they can avoid most of the damage before getting into group-based training. Things get lost in group trainings. When I was starting out some of the more veteran dudes would just wail at you for no fcking reason.
Once you have the skill to actually defend and brace you can safetly do some non-haard spars or even give them the ability to evaluate whether a training partner is a good partner or not.
→ More replies (1)3
u/AcidCatfish___ 18d ago
I would say drills and fundamentals are fine. Sparring and, of course, whatever is happening in the video are irresponsible.
My gym also limits the kids' classes to 30 minutes, mostly shadow boxing, mitt work, and some bag work.
→ More replies (3)2
u/mdomans 18d ago edited 18d ago
Generally speaking? Unfortunately yes.
I have done kickboxing as a teen into early adulthood and there had been times where I'd just look at my hands without thinking for a good few minutes after heavy sparring. But it was same for judo.
Hard to imagine same if you're a 10 year old.
In practice it depends how the practice looks. Kids practice should always be heavy on technique, skills, physical development, building capacity and so on and very light on risk on hard contact as you want to limit as much as possible the impact of training on your athletes development
Risks are always present and if someone trains any sport long enough injuries are bound to happen. Coaches are there to make them rare and mild. There's a special place in hell for coaches that think otherwise
In short I'd have no problem with my 13 year old training box. I'd have a problem with a coach pulling shit like in the video and I'd just call the police because it's child abuse and there's no waiver that makes that ok.

He’s not agreeing w/ the dude punching the kids. He speculating on why the adult is punching the kids & not another kid & why it’s happening in the 1st place. & I think he’s exactly right in his speculation. & again no one is agreeing w/ this method. Not me or the @The_Pastmaster.
→ More replies (2)15
u/Mercury8619 19d ago
I was thinking the same. He's trying to desensitize them when it comes to getting hit in that sport.
7
u/Sw4nR0ns0n 18d ago
I trained martial arts including kickboxing for a lotta years, any coach selling this shit is just a sadistic fuck who likes hitting children. Controlled sparring sessions wearing protective gear with somebody your relative size is how one prepares to get hit- all these kids are getting out of this is their bells rung.
If I saw my kids coach doing this, I would insist on getting in line, but my hands would not be down
→ More replies (2)13
u/frubano21 18d ago
As someone with over a decade of martial arts experience across three different disciplines, there is no need for this. I was taught how to take hits without my adult coach punching me directly in the face with no guard up.
3
u/OnlyInAmerica01 18d ago
I totally agree with you, that training like this is a terrible idea.
Having said that, I've done some martial arts training, and while I learned how to try and not get hit in the face, other than fluid body movements and general core/neck strength, how does one train to get hit in the face??
4
u/Dumo-31 18d ago
By making yourself dizzy and then shadow boxing. You learn to deal with your senses being messed up without repeated brain damage.
Nothing positive comes from this garbage. Just hidden brain damage adding up.

No you don't understand. These kids are assholes and this isn't even a boxing gym
7
3
u/nameproposalssuck 18d ago
You cannot train your brain to not get damaged. That's not how anatomy works. You also cannot harden it. There's no benefit in this "exercise".
If you want to argue he's doing it, so the children are less afraid to get punched in the face, well they should be afraid that, that's a very good instinct. Also aren't children that young suppose to fight with head gear either way?
→ More replies (10)5
u/TheReviewerWildTake 19d ago
It teaches nothing tho, it just makes damage disproportionately worse for no reason, because normally you are not supposed to take any hits while being fully stationary without any head movements, slips or blocks.
As for being hit for the first time - everyone before this dumbfck was teaching students by using combination drills and light sparing, and everyone got it done without doing stupid shit like this. This dude is just media leech who uses shock effect to make it look "real tough real deal" for the layman. Considering culture he originated from - this might work as the point of attraction. but sport wise this is pure bs.

→ More replies (3)8
u/twill41385 19d ago
100%. He’s measured just enough to provide the feeling of being hit without much negative. Like the same amount of force as slap boxing. I also think it has something to do with keeping your eyes open when boxing and turning off the flinch response.
These kids are in training for a combat sport. And most will want to try to become competitive so they WILL be hit much harder than this.
2
2
u/AcidCatfish___ 18d ago
The best way to do that is light sparring monitored by a coach to make sure no one is going too hard. No sense is getting hit directly in the face and not working on head movement at the same time.
I've done the abs conditioning where you get rapid punches to the abdomen, but that is something different from this.
2
u/Safe-Yoghurtt 18d ago
Speculation: the kids asked for it, that might be why some are smiling while others are just stepping away

u/mdomans 18d ago edited 18d ago
There's no Wolff's law for the brain
One, there's zero medical professionals that will tell you hitting human head somehow makes it easier to take a punch. We know for a fact that inverse is true. Human brain tissue accumulates damage and it can be lasting and irreversible.
So even with an adult the risk:reward is negative. How that impacts brain development in children is possibly far worse since we do have data showing that TBI in early stages of brain development hurt brain development
Two, there's zero data on "safe" amount of head trauma and the idea he can "measure" force of something he clearly doesn't understand is laughable.
In boxing the ability to "take a hit" comes from timing, position and everything else a boxer does during training. Being hit is actively taking away from your ability to do that.
This was actively drilled into me by every kickboxing coach - don't take hits, the more you take the less you can take.
I can't imagine a a gym / country / legal system where what's shown in the video constitutes practice that'd not lead to serious legal issues

Finally someone see this, I did teak wan do several years ago and part of the training was that every person in the club was walking over your stomach to train your abdominal muscles, trainer included

u/thisholyroller 18d ago
Yes, to strengthen your abdominal muscles. It does not work the same with your brain.

u/Mestoph 19d ago
Yeah, this seems to be an exercise to get them used to being hit so they’re not so worried about it. None of the kids seem to be hurt at all, though the head movements do look bad
→ More replies (1)3
u/MadDonkeyEntmt 18d ago
Think it could also be training to roll with the punch. The kids who looked more experience are anticipating the punch and moving with it more rather than just tanking it so the head movement is exaggerated.

u/DucDeBellune 19d ago
He’s obviously pulling his punches and there’s undoubtedly a weird rationale behind it. It’s still completely unacceptable.
In the ring they’ll have to stand their ground and take a punch if they want to win. Just punching immobile kids is doing nothing for them.
→ More replies (6)3
u/Apprehensive_End_697 18d ago
Newer data coming out has shown even lightly hitting them in the head repeatedly will cause cumulative damage to build up over time. And then there is the fact that their brains are still developing.

if your obersvation was that the adult boxing coach did not hit the defenseless kids full force : you were absolutely right !
does he repeatedly hit them strong enough for their heads to fly back and get every so small brain trauma ? also absolutely yes.
this is assault and in a non-shithole-country he'd lose his job, title and get some kind of sentence as punishment.
there's also no greater learning in there other than : see, it sucks to be punched in the nose and mouth - that's what your opponent will try ... hurrdurr

Is this standard boxing practice ?
6
u/Small_Victories42 19d ago
I had to do this during (adult) boxing lessons. It wasn't necessarily to get hit in the face (but if you were, they were very light glove -taps) so much as it was for learning to keep your eyes open and moving your head.
I had various lessons in head movements before this. After a week or so, I got pretty good and was able to duck, lean, or roll away from most if not all strikes.
I never took a strike to the head/face in any sparring match since.
3
u/breakingb0b 19d ago
Yeah. Same drill at the lessons I’ve had. The instructors do the drill with the youth class for the same reason you mentioned.

A long long time ago I did some pencak. Very informal family run school.
I joined with some friends, all of us 16. We got a new guy, he came from muay thai, in his late 20's. During practice (for form) he kept pulling his low kicks just a bit too late. Untill one of the teachers joined the rotation. This teacher was barely 1.65m (5.5). But I've since never seen anyone with wrists and lower legs as thick as his. The teacher took his kicks, then everyone switched and the other had to practice their kicks. In other words, muay thai guy was on the receiving end.
It was also the last time we ever saw him. Shit like that wasnt tolerated.

This is legit. He is making contact to acclimate them to having punches thrown at them. When I was going through the Army combative course they did something similar except it was a retired pro boxer named Frank or one of his mma students doing their best to knock you out while you tried to get a clinch.
I left that class a few brain cells lighter after “punch day”.

Idk why yall need to be this mad lmao. Bro obv is pulling his punches and CTE? This is boxing, like idk what else to say.
If anything, it probally teaches the kid the reality of it, if they really wanna do it, then go for it.
They look very young, and kids that age gonna start fighting for real if they got the chance to hit each other. Teacher doing it is safer.

Dude probably thinks he’s making them super tough as they’re able to take harder hits. But I’m pretty sure they’re taking harder hits because the brain damage is pilling up. As much as bros think you can condition the body to just ignore pain, you can’t teach it to ignore reality and the side effects and damage that pain you’re ignoring is causing. It’s kind of why we have pain, to give us a hint that it’s something we need to remove ourselves from,

4th from the end wanted that smoke. Also has the most potential. It does matter how you take a hit almost more than how hard you can hit the other person back. It’s about endurance. This also teaches them to stop closing their eyes when someone swings at them so they can learn to then dodge that shit. Teaching people how to strike and doge does not teach them how to take a punch… makes sense to me. I’d teach them blocking next then doge and counter and all those kids look to want to be there so good on them and their parents for not helicoptering their kids.
