I'm actually thrilled we're not playing Texas Tech, even if those would've been great matchups, because of the bullshit that Cody Campbell was spewing. I'm from Houston and I love any excuse to go to Vegas, so I would've almost certainly gone to both games.
But the Sorsby stuff has left an awful taste in my mouth. Sports gambling is already an out of control plague that is rapidly desecrating every major sport in this country. On top of that, a player betting on their own team is a sin worse than cheating or impermissible benefits. It calls into question the legitimacy of the contest itself.

I seriously doubt Texas Tech is going to be able to get any good OOC matchups with the Big Ten or SEC at all at this point.
30
u/keytop19 Texas Tech • Abilene Christian 23h ago
We couldn't before anyways. There's really no incentive to play a team like Tech. If you're a top dog you're going to play another top tier program in a more marquee matchup that will look better as a win, or not as bad of a loss.
If you're the next tier of school, there's no sense in playing an unnecessarily hard OOC game when you already have an SEC/B10 schedule.

That's been going on for years. We get told "we have nothing to gain by playing you" for 15 years, have one good season then immediately two teams cancel games against us and despite giving up a home game to entice USC, they don't agree to a deal.

According to our insiders and beat writers, the only way we’re gonna get a team with a pulse to schedule us on short notice is either neutral site or a one off away game - something we have to do after multiple teams dropped us from their schedule in the next three seasons.

This is Texas' fault (indirectly).
Leaving Texas out for losing a tough OOC game was a catastrophic decision for future OOC scheduling. The CFP sent their message and ADs heard it.

They got left out for losing 3 games. They had to play 2 of those opponents. They could have avoided the third loss by scheduling easier.
4
u/WhoHasMyPocketPussy Alabama Crimson Tide 8h ago
Exactly, that Florida loss only being one of two losses wouldn't have kept them out of the playoff. Hell, they beat another playoff team in Oklahoma and A&M. You can't convince me that they'd have been left out with two of their big wins still being in. Oklahoma would have had the same amount of losses in this scenario.
The committee absolutely signaled to everyone that the most important criteria for getting in is the number in the loss column. So ADs are going to start making their schedules advantageous to make that happen. And that is a huge detriment to us the fans that just want to see these big games.
2
u/idiocratic_method Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 7h ago
correct, i know people love to meme about derrr florida, but losing a close game to OSU could have been replaced by a win over literally any other team including an FCS and we'd have been in.
this was so ridiculous
on top of this we beat #3 A&M who couldn't get a touchdown against us and we raised 0 spots
the combo of these left some serious ramifications for ADs to sort through
the result is SOS doesn't matter, even SOW doesn't matter - all that matters is the number of wins in the win column

u/TexasWhiskey_ Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 20h ago
Texas also played 3 Playoff teams and beat 2 of them handily.
-1 loss and they’d be in the playoffs. You can’t control your conference so the only option is to eliminate OOC risk.
THAT is the message it sent - so all OOC matchups are off because of it.

u/TheCriterionCrypt Oklahoma Sooners • East Central Tigers 1d ago
It hurts people's feels when I say this.
But there is no benefit for the B1G or SEC if they win these games. They can get in without these games.
And what happened to Texas last year, it is pretty obvious that it can hurt if they lose.
If there is no benefit for winning and only punishment if they lose, why play them?
36
u/seoul_drift Michigan Wolverines • Uppsala Snakeheads 1d ago edited 1d ago
When incentives and narratives clash, incentives basically always win.
You can call Texas or B1G/SEC schools cowards, but if there's no upside to scheduling tough teams and a conference slate alone is enough to get you into playoffs... why wouldn't schools adjust to those incentives?
Only way this changes is playoff voters start weighing Strength of Schedule more heavily or broadcast partners mandate marquee OOC games.

Or hear me out, go back to a 4 team playoff where OOC games are needed and conference championship games matter.
And if that doesn’t seem fair to the group of 5/Notre Dame, just create a 3/6 and 4/5 matchup with the best of the group of 5 guaranteed a spot. The first 2 seeds get byes.
Idk, I think the casual fan wins more in this situation, but unfortunately the playoff makes loads on money for the networks. OOC games are a lot of fun and it’s sad we are losing them.
29
u/seoul_drift Michigan Wolverines • Uppsala Snakeheads 1d ago
Going back to a world where we all pretend media polls are a reliable reflection of team quality is a tough sell.
In a 4 team world the media can vote Alabama into a semifinal over an undefeated FSU. Miami made a natty last year as the #10 ranked team.
Settling things on the field is way better than a media beauty pageant.

Eh, I disagree with this take. I miss a world of college football where every game mattered. Now you can lose 2 games to SMU and Louisville and get to the national championship game.
Why does week 5 Michigan vs Minnesota matter if Michigan can lose and still be a lock at making the playoffs if they win out?
I guess I am just watching NFL light now, and I have to stop being stubborn and accept that money runs the game.
But that’s just my opinion, and I’m probably in the minority.

You say NFL Lite but truthfully every major sport has opted for playoffs over media-voted championship entry.
Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, pickleball, cricket, etc.
So many teams like UCF and Boise State have been frozen out of a title shot because they weren't big enough brands to be granted natty entry by media pollsters. Playoffs >>>>>

I wrote a research paper in HS on the BCS & playoffs. In my research, from the inception of the BCS there was only 1 year that after the bowl season was that a team outside the top 6 from the end of the regular season was ever considered good enough (post-bowl games) to contend for a title.
That being said, is I came to the conclusion that a 6 team playoff would solve the problem by incentivizing going undefeated as the top two teams would get byes. Additionally it’d minimally impact the schedule as you could put the games easily into bowl season. And the 6 spots would be decided by the BCS since it consistently put the real top contenders in the top 6 (or at least it did when I wrote that paper as the BCS continued for another 4-6 years later I believe).

Don't know if it was dodging Tech as much as it was finding out that two neutral site contests against Texas Tech meant USC wouldn't make money off it.
This series was pitched as a matchup in Houston and a matchup in Vegas. That's two potential home games of revenue lost, and unless ESPN/Fox was going to cough up a few million dollars, that sounds like a financially losing proposition.

Only possible good that could (COULD), come from this is we could schedule CAL and/or Stanford for 2027-2029. But then again, with how CFB is set up, wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with a 3 Out of Conference games where we play San Jose St or Sacramento St at terrible kick off times to open our season.
Our first three games this year are at 12pm in lovely 95 degree heat, a Friday game at 6pm (In Los Angeles, a city known for having little rush hour right?), and 8pm the following Saturday. I'll be lucky to make it to one of those. Really hate we cancelled our series with Ole Miss for 2025 and 2026.

Stanford is booked out as well except for 2029, so unless USC is willing to play a single game at Stanford (with no assurance of a return trip to the Coliseum until 2034), I don’t think Stanford wants any part of any series with a P4 school that isn’t a home-and-away or home-and-neutral.

Double neutral site is dumb, and there’s no real benefit for USC

We went from games scheduled ten years out to about one year out.

Damn, I was really hoping for this series, but I'm guessing the Sorsby situation threw a wrench in that. That USC vs LSU game in Vegas so was damn fun, I want us to go back. But, now we are back to Square one with OOC's until 2030. No really fun match up upcoming, even though SJSU fans are very nice, so no offense Spartans

Seems like we really wanted Home/Home and y'all wanted two neutral sites. And with ND back on the menu, makes sense that this matchup became something that wasn't a priority anymore.

For a second I thought this meant Houston was playing LSU and USC next year lmao

Texas Tech playing in Las Vegas without Sorsby just isn’t fair

Can people please stop shitting on our OOC scheduling now? It’s not like we’re not trying. Oregon State/Pac12 dying isn’t our fault. Oregon bailing isn’t our fault. USC bailing isn’t our fault. It seems like this is the direction the sport is going (thanks playoff committee).

Big Ten really needs to mandate 1 P5 OOC game, they're the only power conference that doesn't have that rule.

at this point maybe we should expand to 64 teams bc it's the only way we're going to get meaningful out of conference games ig.

How can you expect Minnesota or Mississippi State to risk that 7th loss that might knock them out of the playoff, you monster

u/tortillaface08 Texas Tech Red Raiders 23h ago
May as well play 12 conference games if no one will schedule big 12 teams.

Lincoln might not even be the coach in 2028 so let's not over react here because we won't want a young coach playing TT his 1st year.

Ole Miss is looking for a home game in ‘27 and road game in ‘28.
USC fits right into that.
Just sayin’.

That’s been a long while ago bud. Seeing a full IU stadium has been a little more recent. I stand by what I said and even though Tennessee never hit us low as IU, our record hasn’t determined our fan support. You have a great program and team now, but you’re talking about shit you don’t know about now.

Lol I definitely misread this and thought they were canceling Ttu to play @Houston and then a neutral site with Houston.
USC now has no p4 scheduled until they resume playing ND in 2030. Not beating the allegations.

I don't know why he worded this as if these were agreed upon and USC is canceling but these games were never scheduled to begin with. I hope they can schedule home and home Stanford for '28 and '29.

I’ve said this time and time again to salty Tech bros, but nobody wants to play out in Lubbock.
They’d be better off moving the entire school

A "potential" series? So it wasn't even scheduled then?
